This is the one thing that I hate about being a PS fan. I really hope that they're working on a solution but I just don't believe they are anymore.

People paid money for years to STREAM old games on PS Now. The idea that PS fans don't to play PS3 games (not that different from PS4 games) is obviously bullshit.

Pulling the PS3 PS Store without getting backwards compatibility sorted first is a big mistake. If enough fans complain (bad PR) and stop making excuses for them, then I think we can get them to finally take this seriously if they're not already.

They ARE able to provide PS3 backwards compatibility, they won't lose any money doing it, and it's important for game preservation (especially for digital-only games).

Rachel_Alucard1884d ago

Usually when someone shuts down something without having prior made the solution, it means it's not coming back. People made up claims when PS home was shut down that it would come back on PS4, despite nobody ever even hinting at that. The only thing to hope for is re-releases, but that just makes them do the Nintendo tactic of selling the same games over and over again at markup prices.

Honestly, I think you are screaming into void unfortunately. They've more or less had the same stance during ps4 gen when there was an uproar about BC because of X1 investment into it. It didn't make any impact against the ps4.

You hit it on the head about their stance on BC. They likely don't want to invest on into BC going that far back because the people utilizing are such a minority that it is laughable.

But possibly my largest peeve with game preservation argument is that none of the suggested alternatives are 100% game preservation aside from owning the previous hardware. You can buy the previous hardware on second hand. Digital only titles will be an issue, I agree with that, but you have access to the Entire physical library. Not a portion, the entire thing.

Now I agree to an extent what he said about ps now. I say to an extent, because despite the ps3 games being old, a lot are high ranked ps3 gen titles. If they let you download them, that would be dope because the streaming only is rubbish. Their ps4 games they have on the service is solid but old.

Army_of_Darkness1883d ago

I still have 2 ps3's along with all my games "persevered" so I don't want Sony wasting resources on BC like Microsoft (they got no games so I can understand), I like how they are moving to next gen quality games, VR2 and new ips!

bouzebbal1883d ago (Edited 1883d ago )

No and they shouldn't.. Want back catalogue get a cheap ps3 or ps2..
They can remake some of their best games, but I like they invest in the future everytime and aren't stuck in the past

Through their collected data over the years, their consumers are more interested in new games... not the past.

Saying that... Sony has their entire history of gaming. It is theirs.
They could possibly unleash it in a way...

But Sony is Sony because the keep innovating into the future.

While Microsoft has nothing and keeps pushing this back catalog thing as if it is something new.
Every console has had reverse compatibility in some shape or form.
They have collected data that informs them of what the players do/want.

Their consumer are more apt to spend money on new games

Droppedez1884d ago

I bought a fat ps3 for super cheap after purchasing my ps4 and saw all the games from PS2 and PS1 available on the store and just waited for them to be purchased on the PS4 and it never happened, hoping on my PS5 everything will be.

Rude-ro1883d ago

I do not understand your point?
You bought a ps3 to buy the games?
But did not because you waited for the PS4?

I’m not following your point.

Anywho, to the disagrees, market positioning tells you what you need to know.
Who made new games and who did not?

JackBNimble1883d ago

There are many people who have invested in digital content on the ps3.
To say that Sony should invest in the future and forget about anyone who has invested in a ps3 digital library is a farce.

Sony should have a full team working on a solution for BC on all previous generations . To abandon their customers is a breach of trust.

MS has shown that BC on all their
platforms is important, and if the way of the future is digital, then how can you expect people to just be ok with losing part of their digital library?

myfathersbastard1884d ago

It really doesn’t seem like it. They have so many old IP’s with potential and some form of a following they could use

Kaii1884d ago

"Late last year, Sony filed a patent that hints at emulation and backwards compatibility. A section of the patent suggests that the PlayStation 5 will reward players trophies for completing specific tasks in emulated games."
Atleast we're seeing some progress >.>

Ratchet751883d ago (Edited 1883d ago )

This patent was first filed in 2012 and was first used for the Jak hd collection which also came out in 2012.
Sony just filed it back last year for copyright protection. Nothing more

Father__Merrin1884d ago

They could set up some type of emulation for all Ps1 ps2 ps3 and psp vita titles to play on ps5

Fist4achin1883d ago

It would be cool, but if Sony doesn't make any money from it, they are not going to do it.

IanTH1883d ago (Edited 1883d ago )

The fact is, they'd at least put themselves in the position to make more money than not. Better than just sitting on their old catalog and doing nothing with it.

Nostalgia is powerful - Nintendo is proof enough of that. People would buy games from their childhood just to have access to them. Aside from that, though, people who never owned one of the older PS platforms could buy & play its games, especially people who either just got into gaming or previously only owned Nintendo/Xbox hardware. And with Vita/PSP, even those who owned physical copies would have to buy digital copies, as there won't be a way to play discs/carts via PS5.

And plenty of people don't hold on to their old games, or sell them on so they can buy other new games. I am a somewhat niche player in that I hold on to just about every game I have ever bought, so for PS1/2/3 they wouldn't make AS much from me, but I'd still buy stuff I never got to play, want easier access to, or PSP/PSV titles I want to play on the big screen. And they might even find renewed player interest in an IP they believed no longer viable, allowing them to create a new title with less risk given its an established IP they already own the rights for. Plenty of opportunities for money to be made.

TreMillz1883d ago

Nooo YOU think they'd make more money, you're not considering the time, resources, and funds it would take to create its own emulation system that can play 3 generations of titles. Also you have to understand BC is not as big as these blogs make it seem. Yes Sony learned from last Gen so that its customers have SOMETHING to play on their newest console even if it's their old games for Ps4. Trust should MS ever shows its rate or purchase history for 360 and Xbox titles, I guarantee its laughable at best

IanTH1883d ago (Edited 1883d ago )

@TreMillz - Here's the bottom line. The amount of money it would cost them to implement this would be a barely noticeable line item in their yearly financials. PS1 and PS2 games are laughably easy to emulate. Sony already has an emulator for both of them - PS1 software emulation was on PS3 and we're getting PS2 games on PS3/4 that are done via emulation as well. They could easily tweak that for PS5 hardware and recompile. So the only thing they need to do is get PS3 up and running.

And for PS3, the fact is amateur coders have already put together a PS3 emulator on PC that works quite well even on moderate hardware. It isn't perfect, but it gets better all the time. And to get to that point, they didn't even have unrestricted access to system hardware and software like Sony would if they persued it. If a crew of people can do it in their spare time, Sony - with schematics, source code, tons of money, and talent - can do it as well. PS4 was not powerful enough, but PS5 certainly is.

And furthermore, who cares how great it is or isn't for business, even if I'm wrong about it bringing them in more money? It is a low cost to Sony, it engenders goodwill, and is a benefit for players. I care about it as a gamer, not a Sony stockholder. PC has it, Xbox has it, Sony should have it. There's no good excuse for them not to.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle26d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.
