To be honest, I'm one of the very lucky European people who has both a PS3 and an Xbox 360. I play both on a 40" Sony Bravia KDLW2000 LCD TV. PS3 is through HDMI and the Xbox is still through the inferior Component cable.

To be honest... I was suprised, the Xbox version (Even through it's component cable) had slightly more detail to the images than it's PS3 counterpart on COD3.

But upon examination I noticed that the lighting on the xbox360 was GLARING and often produced paradoxial results (For instance light shining through walls, overused lighting in dark areas) It was basically....just horrible.

Annoyed at this I did some research and found out that the PS3 infact has 128bit HDR, which is far higher than the Xbox 360 thus causing the xbox 360 to Bloom it's lighting.

I certainly do not think the Xbox 360 is capable of producing better graphics with it's yesterdays technology, but I do think that developers should exploit the Cell and RSX to get more out of it.

This brings me to the conclusion that when I play games on the PS3 I'm seeing them as the developers wanted me to see them, when you play games on the 360 you see them in a distored sense.

Just compare GOD OF WAR on ps2 to it's original titles - now that's almost a generation leap and it runs perfectly well on my 5year old ps2. All games will improve in graphics, and that means the xbox360 as well. As far as I know we're not even threading games yet, so the xbox has those other two cores to play with.

But then the ps3 has a lot to play with, and the improvements will come. As the thing says, when you're working to the strengths of a certain machine then the graphics will be much better - of course ports dont look as good, because they were working to the strengths of the 360.

Of course it's about time...when have 1st generation games ever looked good?

Thanks for your feedback. It's funny someone should mention the M$ Biased site: Gamespot because thats where I think this whole lighting issue started. I cannot comment on their comparisons because I question their authenticity... I havn't got my systems mixed up "Hardwood" I have a firm belief in my own eyes and they do not decieve me when I look at the PS3 and Xbox 360 side by sides in a graphics comparison - the result being the PS3 games have better lighting.

Notice how I said the Xbox360 had better detail. That is still the case and I'm not really sure why they do? Perhaps these games were made on the Xbox360 first then PORTED to PS3 or emulated or what ever. I'm not sure.

As for RFOM. I don't see why I should doll out £50 on a game that looks only slightly better than PS2's Killzone that is full of idiots in an online community. No thanks. I skipped that game - I will get it once my clan gets their own PS3s so we can play it together.

In conclusion and to reply to "gnothe1" comment, I'm not really too sure about the way these games on the PS3 will turn out in terms of graphical quality on their first party titles. I hope that they look as fantastic as what we have all been promised, but it's going to take developers time as it did with alot of PS2 titles.

I'm quite happy with Both my Xbox 360 and my PS3. The Xbox may reek of unstability over the next couple of years but at least I can play Deadrising over and over again. (That is my fav game on Xbox360, worth buying the console for)

I'm going to say the typical fanboy statement here "Just give it time" because that's what it needs. Time. We should see a dramatic improvement in already great graphics on the PS3 and Xbox360 over the next couple of years. both systems will graphically look great, but it comes down to the games. if the games are horrible, the system will be viewed as horrible. let's hope this time around we don't have a plethora of games where majority are crap (ref ps2 library).

some 360 games will look better, some ps3 games will look better. it depends on the style the devs choose, and what type of effect they are going for. the xbox was stronger graphically than the ps2, but there are still some ps2 games that look better than some xbox games. even every game on the same system doesn't look as good as each other, so why would it be any different on multiple systems?

Sony is telling everyone the PS3 is the most advanced system, that's why the price tag is what it is. What i don't understand is If we as gamers have to break our necks to tell the diff between 360 and Ps3 what's so mighty about this $700 system. Gears of War has looked the same since E3 05. R:FOM has looked the same since it was called I8. F-waiting. If I pay $600 it should be that good now. God of War is not even on par with Halo1 on xbox1. At the current moment yes Xbox 360 games look better than ps3 i will say that , but the 360 has been for over a yr now the developers have had more than enough time to make the games look better and to understand the system. It not even been 6 months for the ps3 which is pushing way better specs, they need time to get use to it and understand it. You people forget that when the xbox just came out it wasnt blowing the ps2 away until a few yrs most the games that came out look the same, so all i am saying is lets ask this same question in a yr or 2.

The reason this "European" owns a PS3 is because he imported one. Why did this "European" go through all this effort to get a US PS3 so quickly? Because he wanted to see what it was like for himself and how it compared to the older xbox360 system.

As for the "Wait and see" issue. It's annoying Sony can't have any really decent titles out there at the start. I remember excitidly getting an Xbox360 at launch aswell.....and being very dissapointed by the awful launch line up. I was then faced with numerous claims for M$ fanboys saying "You just wait till GOW or Halo3".... I'm sorry can us Playstation people not stay the same for our console that HAS ONLY JUST BEEN RELEASED.

Obviously not because Gears of War is the greatest game ever made, even though it's a direct copy of a concept done on a PS2 game called "Killswitch" I have Gears of War. It's a stunning game. I think it shold set the bench mark of how all next-gen games should look. It's far from perfect though, it's a boring game and it's 3rd person. (My oppinion)

To be honest, I think Motorstorm looks alot better than GOW. It's difficult for a M$ supporting Xbox owner to look past a game that isn't a shooter but I think that game deserves credit. GT4HD is something spectacular aswell.

So stop giving the PS3 a massive bashing about it's graphics here because there are some fantastic things on it. Half of the people here probably don't even own the right kind of TVs to support 1080p resolutions anyway.

Well, that's what people have been doing. When Xbox came out with Halo we saw graphical differences between PlayStation 2 and Xbox. As a PlayStation 2 owner back in those days, I admitted that Xbox was better "in terms of graphics", and it was "day one" not "year two". When I expect to see a true difference between two systems, I need an example like Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory comparison between Xbox and PS2.

Now Sony has been stating that "true next-gen" will start with PlayStation 3, and I expected the same scenario in the past, just sides switching. I expected PlayStation 3 to deliver something different, so that I'd accept the fact that PS3 is a better system than 360, just like I did back when Xbox came out.

What happened though? Now that two system's games are comparable through tiny-miny differences, the exclusive games not representing any major difference either (I still think GOW is the best, but since UT3 will be on PlayStation 3 too, I'll keep thinking that U3E is representing what's best for both systems for now).

All I know is that developers had more time for PlayStation 3 before rushing their games for sale, when compared to Xbox 360, and I dont think we should wait for such a long time, or pay a higher price when there is not a big gap, hence the title of my comment.

God Of War 2 has better graphics and better gameplay than 98% of your games on the 360. This is from a Sony 1st party dev, for a 6 year old console. ALl you guys can tlak about is Gears Of War, when infact, PS2 is beating the hell outta the 360 with God Of War 2. Imagine God Of War 3 on the PS3. Its voer zombies, just get over with it, and go play your Gears Of War. The ONLY GAME thats any good, which came out a full year after the launch.

One console was launched a year eairly and one delayed a year, we all can say is RFOM and GoW were both in development for about the same amount of time on new hardware don't let the fans twist the realalities of this matter. How many reviewers need to grade multi platform games on PS3 and 360 for people to get it. Xbox was on top of the PS2 and was so from the start. Flatout vs MotoStorm the hole way baby RFOM vs GoW the hole generation. All the Techies and truthful dev's know the PS3 will be left behind graphiclly, MS is sure of it because they know more about it than any of us do.

Based on what actual developers are saying, a lot of the PS3 information being spread by anti-Sony individuals across the web is hilariously wrong. A programmer from Ninja Theory freaked out when they found out what some people were saying, such as the "PS3 only has 6 SPEs available, with one SPE blocked off for redundancy(which is true) and one blocked off strictly for the Operation System (completely false).

Their response was "You're f-ing kidding me..." The truth is that the OS has 5% of one SPE's execution time dedicated towards it. Devs actually have all 7 SPEs for them to use, not 6, not 5. Quote that fake document pasted by QJ all you want; doesn't change the facts.

I could go on and on, but I'll just let you guys know that first-party devs are figuring out some crazy things for Cell+RSX. They've got everything from Cell-based rendering to SPE programs that dictate tasks dynamically, without programmer assistance. While Guerrila Games isn't talking, a few devs on the Beyond3D forums figure that those insane amount of polygons we saw in the Killzone 'CG Trailer' might actually be possible. If you want me to elaborate, just let me know.

I will just buy the games I want for the system they come out on. If it is multi-format, then I look at the experience I would have playing on one over the other.

This is an entirely subjective article and the term "graphics" is very ambiguous. You can look at a Rembrant painting and still complain at its lack of detail! And even then, you'd have to justify what you mean by "lack". I like realism a lot, but I have freeware games that have retro graphics that are still cool in my opinion. In short, it's all a matter of taste.

Show me an equation or some sort of definitive proof that a console's graphics are "better" and I'll show you games on that console that suck in that department.

You make some very good points when it comes to your own experiences between the 360 and the PS3. Post #12 really drives home the idea i think. I've been telling my comrades on this site that from a graphical standpoint the PS3 games look absolutely spectacular - alot of people yell gaqmeplay, and yes it's a huge factor for me, but graphics are what makes me tick. Even Genji (which I think is a very ambitious game and can't wait for 2) looks stunning in parts for a game that got slaughtered by the early reviews of the press. The colors, trees, water, buildings, fire and character details are nothing less than outstanding in that game and let's not even begin to talk about Motorstorm. Hell yeah I love RFOM and Gears, but I'm not going to get in a p*ssng contest here over which is better blah, best, longer, blah, multiplayer, blah.... Each game is kick ass in it's own right and deserves the accolades. I will say however, (get ready for MAJOR flameage) that RFOM on my TV (Bravia) played through the good 'ol component cables is maybe (maybe) a hair better in some spots when compared to RFOM, but then again there's areas in RFOM (played through Rocketfish HDMI cable) that aren't replicated on GOW and just outshine it hands down. I think people (critics) for the most part were just astounded with GOW from the jump because no one had ever seen that type of gameplay nor character modelling coming from a home-based console before. It was easy to crown MS an early victor and I think people were proud to give it to them and let's face it - there was no other competition & people expected MS to get out games like GOW a lot sooner - that's what MS jumped into the race early to do - to beat SNE to the punch, but ironically a year latger these PS# games don't look bad, as a matter of fact they look damn good. I know there are those out there who say that HDMI doesn't really matter, but after playing MS games like Lost Planet and then kicking on RFOM, NHL2K7, Motorstorm, or GTHD, with and HDMI connection there's no question as to which picture looks better. I have nothing against MS. They are good at what they do. MS has SNE beat right now hands down with XBOX Live, but the graphical department for the PS3 is turning heads and coming on strong out of the box -- and that "CELL" word can't help but come to mind. KZII will be time to put up or shut up and I can't wait.

In three years maybe, but comparing now is stupid. Another thing I find that is funny is how the Xbox 360 developers are so quick to to try to place GoW as a First Gen Game. Its not. I believe it goes by years. Anything released within the first year of the machine is a first Gen Title. GOW was released right on the eve of second generation so one could argue that it is first but because the quality leaps above the rest of the Xbox 360 games I place it second gen (so do others).

I have an Xbox 360 and I find others that have xbox 360s to consider GoW second gen. Now, when I saw my buddy ps3 and Resistance - I was impressed. If GoW and Resistance were in a Track Meet Resistance is in a very, very, close Second. You can't even put Launch Titles from the Xbox 360 anywhere close to these games.

Despite the graphics not quite up to par with GoW, (and that's expected) it is still a fun game to play and try to stop by my buddy's house every now and then to get some Resistance game time in. I plan on buying a PS3(when I get the money, damn expensive). My friend, also download the Gran Turismo HD and I was impressed by the demo and is better than any option I have right now for the Xbox 360 as far as racing.

Exclusives is the only way to go when comparing technology. Assassin's Creed was mentioned in the video but it's cross-platform and I doubt they are going to favor one platform over the other and will try to make the game look as close to the same as possible regardless if the either machine had more power to give or not. As always, if there is a game that looks better and plays better (better frame rates, etc) than Assassin's Creed then whose fault is it? The Hardware's fault or the Programmers?

This goes for Xbox 360 as well. GoW is awesome and why did we have to wait for one year to get such a game. I remember MS and their loyal subjects (Xbox favored developers) praising how easy it was to program for the Xbox 360 compared to the PS3 which would supposedly allow developers to better make games. Well were is this advantage? I have Gears of War to show for it after a year. In the next 6 months, the PS3 will have games release for it that may surpass GOW - exclusive or non-exclusive.

This is my rant! I believe that the Xbox 360 is a great machine but I have started to see the big picture. Microsoft is/has started to fall for their own 'We are better than Sony' advertising. They, and developers, for the Xbox 360 have let a Year advantage slip by while Sony Camp preps for battle.

Both machines are Powerful enough to satisfy the Next Gen Console Generation but its not the Hardware that will kill the machine it will be who is the most Prideful. Right now MS is swimming in it and if they don't pull their heads out of their you-know-what then Sony will slip right buy them!

That said, I still love playing games on my Xbox 360 and when I finally get my PS3 I'll probably enjoy playing games on that too. I won't need to worry about HD Movies for the xbox 360 because when I buy my PS3 this year it will come with it. I'm a gamer not a movie watcher. If it isn't included I don't go out to get it. I never have owned a DVD player and I doubt I'll own a stand-alone HD player as well. I have a PC and consoles that fill that spot. If the consoles didn't come with it I would have bought a PC that included HD movie playing.

I have always owned at least two consoles and that isn't going to change. Why limit your choices.? Just because some kid or poor person can't purchase a $500-$600 console doesn't make the console less powerful - just makes it more expensive. There are enough hardware features to justify PS3 cost and from what I see the PS3 will have no problem competing graphically with the Xbox 360. Combined the Xbox 360 and PS3 are a thousand dollars and that's still cheaper than my PC which, at $1200, is no game machine.

Just be happy that we can game at 720p for $400 and possibly game at 1080p or at least provide more options for exclusive games for another $600.

Value HD gaming has never been better. Can't wait to see the Next Generation Console/maybe even PC Wars. (Once DX10 gets the kinks worked out should be better). Lets hope MS, Sony, and Nintendo stay around the same price range.

Im a PS3 owner and I don't want a 360 because I like Jap rpg's and such. But I admit that the 360 screen image is very nice, I'm not sure but I think the anti aliasing seems to be always on on the 360 and I like that allot. Ala' old Nintendo gamecube, Dreamcast. But having said that, it really doesn't make that much of a difference when playing the games in front of you. Oh, and one more thing, gamespot $ucks Microsofts ass so much, you cant believe anything they say about comparisons. If you look at the COD3 shots, they have the gamma way up on they ps3 shots. Actual gfx show no difference at all.
P.s. We don't care how 'great' xbox live is. I will NEVER pay for online gaming. That is the definition of bull$hit.

see it is the opposite for me, i only play games online, i HATE japanese rpgs and animie games with little boys and girls. the only single player games i enjoy are GTA type games which is no longer on the PS. so the ps3 holds nothing to interest me since assassins creed is now on the 360 also.
i guess when people compare the two they feel like they are getting more bang for the buck with the 360.
but even at the demo stations i have noticed more frame rate drops in the ps3 games they have in there. i am sure that will get better with time, but the games i enjoy just are not on the PS this time around.

and i happily pay for xbox live, there is so much in there to watch and play and do, well worth the few bucks a month.

ps. the few times i have seen the same game on the 360 and ps3 side by side the 360 is ever so slightly better but seems to run much smoother, with a MUCH better controller.

I have played the 360, but I have not played the PS3. I have also played the Wii and the graphics are no where as near as good as the 360 but yet I had a better time playing the Wii. That right there proves that graphics are not everything. But TheMART, I will have to disagree with you dude. In the photos you have shown here there is barely any differences in the pictures. Xbox360= Darker, PS3= Lighter. That is all. You prove no Valid point at all. And you claim that FNR3 looks better with 360? How come you can see the veins and sweat better on the PS3? Now you did have a valid point between GOW and RFOM. GOW does win hands down but RFOM is a launch title, and still has almost as good graphics as GOW. The PS3 will have a good future ahead of it. It took the 360 a whole year to get where it is now and the PS3 is already at the point where the 360 is now. The GPU's of both machines are very very good but on the 360 you have a superior GPU but not by very much at all. The processor is inferior however. But when you look at the RSX with the Cell processor it makes up the difference and then adds some.

GOW2 has nothing on 360 games but does look good for a PS2 title and yes I said PS2 title! I cant find any good news on PS3 and think it's to funny that you guys resort to trying to paint a pretty picture when you know damn well that the grass isnt greener on the PS3 side right now and may never be! Now one thing I will do myself is wait for a year or two to see just how much the games improve for PS3 to make a decision on if it's worth the purchase or not! 360 is an excellent machine pushing some really impressive games out and visuals that unfortunatley surpass anything else out there at the current moment! The whole 1st gen vs. 2nd gen games thing is based on developers not having the dev kits early enough. How can you ignore that? Right now, Gears outdoes everything else...but I'm pretty sure Unreal will look better on PS3 because it's being ported from PC directly TO PS3...same with PC to 360. The PS3 has the advantage graphics-wise...and anyone saying otherwise is a complete fanboy. We've known for awhile what the PS3 is capable of. You're ignoring the truth...and it's kind of sad.

Dude, I don't know who you are, but I loved the post. It pretty much sums the gaming industry up right now. The wii is fun...but I think it will die out because the parents that bought them...and played them...no longer play them. Only the kids play it now. If you want quality games...either wait for Metroid 3 or get a PS3... The only good games on the 360 are multiplatform...except Gears. But even that's not 300-400 dollars worth of game. From what I'm seen, the PS3 will have better titles in the future...especially this year. (Halo 3 <don't even go there. It's gonna be terrible)

I don't see how so many people can be such suck ups to the Microsoft Corporation and their evil (dic)tator Bill Gates. First off lets look back at the games that were originally released on the XBOX 360. None of these games was a MUST BUY, except for maybe COD 2. Tony Hawk's game was lame, PGR3 sucked more exhaust than a suicidal person with a hose and a garage. Dead or Alive 4 was decent, but nothing harnessed the power of the 360's GPU until gears of war. Sure FNR 3 was entertaining but it felt a little cartoony. I do say that the developers are finally getting a hang of it, but it still needs work. As for the PS3, yeah it had a lackluster launch, with only one true must buy title, Resistance Fall of Man. Put up against the onslaught of Gears, it held its own, and has a vast online community and followers eager to do deathmatches and other team related battles. I own both systems I own both games and enjoy both. I love the fast pace of Gears 4 on 4 style but at the same time I love the 40 person blitzkreig of Resistance. Now for all the Sony nay-sayers who say that Sony is done, or that the PS3 sucks, let me point out somethings you may have forgotten...
Heavenly Sword, Killzone 2, Final Fantasy XIII & XIII(versus), Haze, Unreal tournament 3, Eight Days. Sure none of these titles are out yet, but it took time for the 360 to achieve its library. And for all the sony fans out there (myself included), just be glad that we don't have Viva Pinata on our system, talk about G*y.

One more thing, I agree that both systems have a strength and a weakness to their online functionality, but at least with PS3 we get a web browser as well as a online service, and a 60 GIG hard drive that doesn't contain a whole bunch of worthless microsoft crap.

The winner of the console wars is still undecided, but when the dust does settle, wouldn't you want to be on the winning side....the Sony side.

The title of this article asks a VERY simple question....and the answer is a VERY simple NO. Now for those of you who may say its not that simple, well yeah, "IF" the question was "Why do PS3 games not look as good as 360 games,*currently?" then that would be a different question, and of course all the "theories"/excuses would be debatable. They asked a simple question, they looked at various games, and the simple answer is NO....-Really if this is the wrong conclusion...then why are so many PS3 fans, saying "yeah but", or "RFOM looks almost..." or "look at PDZ" or the classic "wait until..." -I personally love that one, it says everything you need to know in one statement, because the PS3 launch has come and gone and "NOW", nobody's blown away...Is that so terrible? Is the PS3 doomed? -No, only in a Xboxfanboys dreams....but it does show the WORLD what I have been telling the "extreme" Sonyfanboys/M$ haters for a long time, which is; "The 360 is one hell of a gaming console and the PS3 is great in its own right....but it won't ever, ever blow the 360 games away." IMO 360 games over the life cycle will always have a "slight" graphical edge over PS3(GPU), but as always it will come down to the type of games your prefer. okay so i get that the ps3 did just come out and all and it isnt fair to some people that it is being compared to 2nd generation xbox360 games but i disagree. for one thing if you recall the xbox was compared to the ps2 right? the ps2 had a library of games that the xbox couldnt even compete with but on the other hand, the games that did come out for the xbox were awesome. 2nd reason i compare the ps3 with the 360 is because if i remember correctly, sony stated that the ps3 would be leaps and bounds above the 360......im not seeing it. It's post-holiday season. We haven't seen a new PS3 title in a month. And the heavy-hitters don't arrive until March. Don't expect the PS3 to topple 360's monthly sales until then.

ports and multi-platform games are either gonna be even, sub-par, or just a tad above better on the PS3. The only time that games are gonna shine on the PS3 is when developers take their time and develop with the PS3 in mind. other then that the PS3 should really work on getting Exclusive content on their version of the each game. Since they have Blu-Ray developers can put more on to a disc without having to worry about compressing it later, this will truly be the one true benefit of having a Multi-platform game on the PS3.

However, with games like Gears of War and Lost Planet, These games demostrate 360's ability. Unfortunately it's also the plateau. In a year these two games along with the soon to be released title Mass Effect has and will demonstrate that the 360 has already peaked in its performance. The games wont get much better than they are right now simply because the 360 is limited by own tech specs.

PS3 hasn't even gotten started and already the games look ALMOST as good as the 360. I own both machines because I can afford to, even so, I am convinced dollar for dollar the 360 is overpriced by 150$. With an extremely poor dvd drive, no HD-DVD gaming platform. Inability to switch to a non-proprietary hard-drive. DVD sounds like a constant train-wreck. Workmanship that looks like something made in po-dunk china. I like my 360 but I love my PS3.

I also am convince the PS3 is underpriced. I understand 600$ is a lot to most, however you have to understand what this machine can do potentially, it's simply incredible and most people are to narrow minded to really see what this thing can really do.

By the time you spend 400$ on a 360 and 200$ on the HD-DVD that will flop you could have bought a PS3. It's unbeleivable what people just can't comprehend.

I consider myself a gamer not a fanboy and at the moment own a X360.
I've played all games released for the machine but only own 4.
And if you ever play the 360 you'll see that the games are good.
But yeah i think games have already reached its peak performance on 360 and it is showing.
360 has proven to be easy to develope for and PS3 has been proven to be a pain(eg.PS2) then why do they look so close in graphics at this point, so imagine in a years time.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
