Control Ultimate Edition - how next-gen consoles transform a classic game

Ultimately, Control has transitioned nicely onto the next generation machines. It's clearly a big step-up over the last-gen versions of the game - even running on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. The ray tracing effects are beautiful, while playing Control at 60fps takes the gameplay to another level.

Sounds great - now tell me more about that DualSense integration, because this game represents a great opportunity to benefit from it no end.

RazzerRedux1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

Exactly. There are three things about PS5 that are truly next gen to me: 1) 60 fps 2) DualSense 3) Audio. As far as I'm concerned, you can keep native 4K and ray tracing.

ocelot071935d ago

Agreed they are nice expecially ray tracing. But now when it takes away so much performance.

For example COD Cold War. I much rather run that at performance mode at a rock solid 60fps rather than enable ray tracing and have the odd FPS dip.

RazzerRedux1935d ago

@ocelot07

As a PC gamer, gaming on PS4 became such a chore. 30fps just doesn't cut it. I'm used to dialing down all kinds of settings and resolution to get my games up to 60fps. Others may prefer the higher fidelity and that is fine. The great thing is now we have the option.

I guess that it is the fourth thing that feels next gen: 4) Performance vs Quality Modes.

CaptainHenry9161935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

As a PC gamer we had 60fps for over a decade lol. It's not really new to me anymore. But I'm glad the consoles can do it now

RazzerRedux1935d ago

Hilarious that what I posted is controversial to some. So....tell me why.

SullysCigar1934d ago

^ I guess it's because you mentioned DualSense and audio, which are both PS5 advantages - maybe that upset some people? God knows.. :^/

At what time is this game being uploaded to PS+??

DevilOgreFish1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

DF @ 13:56 - "so yes these RT reflections are lower on a playstation 5 but they are honestly higher resolution than a number of other ps5 games with RT reflections."

Imagine that. Control's "low" RT settings are actually "high" compared to other ps5 games.
so that makes it currently the only real title that can truly pull off the feature in consoles.

Fritzwochel1935d ago

At least the PC couldn't match the PS5 loading times!
Exciting to see how the XSX version compares to this.

RpgSama1935d ago

I find it funny how they are now doing initial comparisons against PC and not Series X

dumahim1935d ago

Doesn't seem like they have access to Series X version yet.

shabz6661935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

I think df doesn’t have the Xbox version or they are under embargo. Remedy has a deal with sony. They did this highlight engine video with Cold War too focusing on PlayStation only. It’s all business. Also keep in mind control is Launching on psplus soon and control came out on psnow first. I’m sure tom will get into it in his upcoming analysis with the series consoles.

Such a great game btw. People should definitely play this. And the game looks so good on ps5. Control was one of the best games of last gen. Grew up playing max payne so really happy to see remedy doing well.

Michiel19891935d ago

why wouldnt they? the pc before these releases was the platform with the best experience.

anyway genuinely surprised about the loading times and that it runs this though of a game at such a rate, with raytracing since amd arent the best in that aspect when compared to nvidia. PC has its work cut out at least when it comes down to loading times.

S2Killinit1935d ago

They are biased to the core. You can be sure if series x had an advantage, they would be doing a comparison

ProjectVulcan1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

When the difference in loading times is 5 seconds on PS5 v 7 seconds on PC with an SSD supposed to be half as fast (3.5GB/s) then it's irrelevant let's be honest. The main advantage of PC is the ability to do 60FPS with ray tracing enabled, RTX cards manage it fairly easily because of DLSS.

The best thing is the 30+ second load times are gone for consoles.

Orchard1935d ago

@S2Killinit We've used DF as a comparison source for years - just because they said something nice about Xbox lately after 7 years of PS4 dominance doesn't mean they are biased lol.

They clearly state that they don't have access to the day 1 patch for Xbox.

Fritzwochel -
"At least the PC couldn't match the PS5 loading times!"

they were not using newer PC SSDs.
PC also doesn't have a specific configuration....

Neonridr1935d ago

that NVMe couldn't you mean. I wonder how the Samsung 980 Pro would fare.

ABizzel11935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

Gives up 60fps, for 30fps for Raytraced Coffee Pot... 🌝

That was a joke by the way, but Raytracing on console is going to be limited unless Pro console launch with a newer version of AMDs RDNA 3.0 or 4.0. The various forms of Raytracing can work anywhere from pretty-good, to flat out tanking AMDs RDNA 2.0 GPUs, and consoles are already using quarter resolution reflections in many cases.

It's great to have the option, but for those developers who have smaller teams, smaller budgets, and less resources, the higher framerate is more important IMO than raytracing.

philm871935d ago

I think any raytracing on £450 consoles is quite impressive as it's such a system hog. Personally I don't mind too much playing at 30fps, so I'll usually go for the better graphical 30fps option over the 60fps version. Always good to have the option between performance vs graphics modes on this gen though.

ManMarmalade1935d ago

Same. Im not really picky about 30 or 60fps. I've never really noticed a big difference honestly. I just like to play and enjoy myself.

lazyboyblue1935d ago (Edited 1935d ago )

I'll play with ray tracing because the motion smoothing on my set is great and makes 30 nearly 60. Most hate motion smoothing for various reasons but I don't ever notice any of the negatives brought up against it.
I'd recommend people try it. It's not for everybody or even most but maybe I'm a little blind? Looks as good as 60 to me.

Kurt Russell1935d ago

Maybe your TV is better than mine, but if I use motion smoothing I get some strange input lag.

philm871934d ago

Yeah the input lag is the main downside to motion smoothing. It will vary massively how much lag you get on different TVs.

lazyboyblue1934d ago

If there's lag I'm not really noticing it. If that because the is non or I just ain't sensitive to it, I don't know.
What I do know ,after now playing it, is motion smoothing make the graphics mode feel very nearly as smooth as 60 mode but with ray tracing. Very pleased.
Tv is Samsung RU7470

Guyfamily9991935d ago

The 60FPS is definitely the most important thing for me. I wish more devs had reconstruction methods similar to Isonmiac's temporal injection used in Spider-Man and R&C. 1440p holds up really well on a 4K TV using that tech.

rpvenom1935d ago

Same, I hope more and more developers are able to figure out ways to do a performance + RT mode like miles morales. That's ideal in most scenarios.

Latex741935d ago

This game just did not click for me somthing missing played it a few times but got boring .played it on game pass its great more people will get to play this well done sony

mkis00768d ago

Such a weird post by them. Apparently they just mean the system wide toggle. Which is perfectly fine. This is based off a post they made after this post.

Eonjay68d ago

Not sure what's weird about that. The update being system wide is basically free marketing for any game using the tech. I assume they already have access to the update and are happy with the results.

mkis00768d ago

Its Just the wording, as they didnt have to do any work for it to be supported.

jznrpg68d ago

Why is it weird for a dev to let people know their game runs better now? If they didn’t mention it that would be weird

mkis00768d ago

I just mean they worded it like they did a custom thing...which they could do by tweaking base resolution if the upgraded pssr allows it with no image drawbacks. I'd be down for that.
