Blu-ray: A 2008 Holiday Hit?

TVPredictions.com:
PriceGrabber.com says sales of the high-def disc player are booming.
Washington, D.C. (December 2, 2008) -- Newspapers across the nation reported over the weekend that many Black Friday shoppers purchased sub $200 Blu-ray players. Some publications called the high-def disc player one of the hottest items on consumers' shopping lists.

"Flatscreen TVs, Blu-Ray players, vacuum cleaners and toys were selling fast at a Wal-Mart store at Fairfax, Va," Money/CNN reported Friday. One newspaper said a $128 Magnavox Blu-ray player was sold out by 9:30 a.m. at another Wal-Mart.

But now two new reports have emerged that could give substance to the speculation that the 2008 holiday season could be a turning point for the high-def disc.

First, the National Retail Federation reported Monday that Blu-ray players were among the top-selling items during Black Friday weekend.

And today, PriceGrabber.com said that the Blu-ray player was the third hottest item during Black Friday weekend, trailing only "women's boots" and watches. The site, which monitors online shopping prices and trends, says online sales of Blu-ray players rose 147 percent compared to last year.

In addition, Sony's BDP-S350 was the third most popular product on Black Friday, PriceGrabber.com reported, trailing only Nintendo's Wii and the Ugg Australia 'Classic Short' boot.

Since when ever evidence of blu ray's longevity is posted someone immediately goes to some site with an analyst's "predictions" and "opinions" of Blu Ray's death.

But I guess all this will be forgotten 2-3 years from now when Blu Ray is commonplace and in majority of households

My BB in NY sold 270 units of Blu Ray players on 27th
All stores across US were sold out of BLu Ray players during the weekend

BB in State College, PA was sold out of every sub $300 player as of today still...and had been since last Friday...the BD disc shelf was drastically dug into as well, with any recent movie only having one or two copies on the shelf...I understand they may be re-stocking, but this time of year someone would lose their job immediately if stuff wasn't on the shelf as soon as it arrives at the retailer...

they also only had 5 PS3's in stock, nearly all of which were the $500 160gb skus...and no LBP or CoD:WaW in stock as well...for comparisons sake I counted over 30 360's, ranging through all different sku's...just pointing that out...I know the 360 killed the PS3 on black friday, or so we've been told, but still interesting...

i just went on a bluray movie hunting and snag some good buys. i got transformers on amazon for 9 bucks, and ironman for 15 bucks in walmart, while i was doing that i grabbed a copy of nba 2k9 at target at a great price at 39 bucks!
the first thing i noticed was everywhere i went the bluray racks on most of the stores are being emptied out and that is why i think this is to be a great holiday for bluray disc and players. and of course the big one is not even out yet,.. i mean DARKNIGHT. this movie is going to sell like crazy. ok have a bluchristmas everyone.

"Be creative 99% of the time" – Glen Schofield on how creativity can help fix AAA industry woes

The Callisto Protocol director thinks the solution involves the right people, the right timing, and perhaps a little bit of AI

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
