Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order | Next-Gen Optimization Patch Notes

From EA Games: "Some of you may have noticed a new title update being downloaded for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order™. Below you will find the release notes for this update, which improves backwards compatibility performance specifically on the latest generation of consoles."

If the other big publisher Ubisoft is able to create Performance and Quality modes for both Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 why didn't EA do the same?

Nd1vhu1866d ago (Edited 1866d ago )

Ubisoft games you are referring to are built for next gen. The EA games that have performance mode on Series X are BC/updated games based on the One X version.

But that's just my guess.

Mr Pumblechook1866d ago

@Nd1vhu

Yes, you're right! EA has gone back and boosted the XBO & PS4 games, these are not native SX or PS5 games.

So basically, PS5 only gets an option for 60fps mode while XSX gets an additional "normal mode" that runs dynamic 4k. In performance mode, XSX is dynamic 1080p to 1440p while PS5 is static 1200p.

Strange they don't give PS5 owners the option for a resolution mode.

LucasRuinedChildhood1867d ago (Edited 1867d ago )

It seems like they're just making adjustments to the One X and Pro versions (allowing higher upper bounds). Only so much is possible using this basic approach. It likely didn't require much effort or money to do this and it's better than nothing.

The full power of these consoles isn't even available when playing games in backwards compatibility. Actual PS5 and Series X versions would be closer in resolution and framerate.

StoneyYoshi1867d ago

"It seems like they're just making adjustments to the One X and Pro versions (allowing higher upper bounds)."

This is exactly it! It's just a patched BC game. As we all know, XB BC is more robust with options compared to the PS5 which is why we are seeing these differences stated in the article.

Kavorklestein1867d ago

Xbox also has a much better implementation of HDR for BC titles.

StoneyYoshi1867d ago

@Kavorklestein

"Xbox also has a much better implementation of HDR for BC titles."

That only matters if the game doesn't already support HDR which isn't the case for this game.

LucasRuinedChildhood1867d ago (Edited 1867d ago )

@StoneyYoshi

"As we all know, XB BC is more robust with options compared to the PS5"
While this is technically true in very specific cases (120fps in Modern Warfare), I don't think this is the reason for the disparity.

The best way to think about it is that there is a multiplier of maybe 2.5 for performance when it comes to running games in backwards compatibility. It's just brute force. The original One X version scaled higher than the Pro version, and since the PS5 and Series X are comparable in power, the One X version will always be a bit better without finer optimizations (an actual PS5 version).

The only way for the PS5 to actually achieve equal resolution and framerate for this Pro version (for the approach they've taken) would be even more brute force, i.e. it would probably need to be 15-30% more powerful than the Series X to achieve the same result.

Think about like this: if someone published a horribly optimised platformer than ran at 360p and 6fps on PS4 (a complete technical disaster), the PS5 couldn't magically make that game run at 4K at 60fps. haha. Only a certain multiplier is possible.

Ju1867d ago

I don't think its that much work to actually build a native PS5 version which contains all those changes. Supposedly the SDKs for PS4 and PS5 are very similar; in the worst case its a recompile for the PS5; can't believe that's not possible. Sure, that probably would require a full QA pass which they might try to avoid, else this doesn't make sense.

A more stable 60fps is what I like to hear. I play this on the One X in performance mode and it would feel so much better at a locked 60. I assume Pro owners would like it locked as well and so the PS5 and SX will provide that while also looking better.

Elda1867d ago

The PS5 version didn't receive equal love.

CantThinkOfAUsername1867d ago

Because Xbox has the marketing rights to this game.

Nd1vhu1866d ago

Because this is just an update of the PS4 Pro and One X version. There's only so much they can do when the Pro version wasn't all that impressive to begin with.

StoneyYoshi1867d ago

This is because it's still a game running in BC mode. This was a simple performance boost patch allowing the new systems to run the game a bit better to the extent of how BC works on both systems which is why the XSX has the better gain from this due to the X1X already running the game at a higher resolution compared to the PS4Pro and not being as restrictive as the PS5 BC mode. Either way though the 60fps improvement is the most important part of this patch which both consoles receive equally.

Elda1867d ago (Edited 1867d ago )

Visuals are important as well,something the PS5 didn't receive like the XBSX. Both should have received equal enhancements.

StoneyYoshi1867d ago (Edited 1867d ago )

@Elda
Dude, the resolution difference will be negligible first off. And second, you should be glad we even got this. they didn't need to do anything to the game but they did. Now the game will run smoother and still have a better resolution than before the update... Its not like the XSX is in native 4k while the PS5 is running native 1200p. In performance mode the resolution is literally 1440p -1080 dynamic(XB) vs native 1200p (PS5)

"Both should have received equal enhancements."

Blame Sony for that. Thats not how their BC is implemented to work. This will most likely happen to any other game that gets this type of treatment if its being run in BC.

UncertainCategory1867d ago (Edited 1867d ago )

The game is running in backwards compatible mode, it's not a proper next gen patch. PlayStation seems to have less options available to developers in this scenario. We saw the same with BC titles like Modern Warfare last year and Cyberpunk as well does not as many options on PS5.

I would have preferred a proper next gen patch, it's odd that EA has been so slow to patch their library. How is Apex not updated yet for example..

cell9891866d ago

I also think XBoX had more resources allotted because of the marketing deal they had with the game

Darthpaul841866d ago

Well the ps5 isn’t really an equal console

Christopher1866d ago

Technically they did. The Xbox One X already had a dynamic resolution, they just increased that range to 4k. PS4 Pro had a set resolution that they kept it at and upped it to 60fps.

Kilua1866d ago

Interesting. Which games from EA have released only on xbox and PC and not on PS?

I've got this downloaded ready to finish, appreciate the bump in fps.
