Great game, deserves more sales.

JEECE1986d ago

Yeah, it's nice to see it to well, and a great reminder to stop using how a game charts at launch as the only measure of success.

Unfortunately the terrible handling of the next gen upgrade has soured this game's reputation a bit.

LucasRuinedChildhood1986d ago (Edited 1986d ago )

It was too CPU-intensive for the base consoles (basically a next gen game in terms of physics) when it came out so I had to pass on it which was a real bummer because it looked right up my alley. The Ultimate Edition was recently on sale for just €20, a very cheap PS5 game for those who never bought the original and the same price as Spiderman Remastered, so I snagged it and I'm really looking forward to it.

They should have at least offered an upgrade path to those who bought the original though.

Petebloodyonion1986d ago

It's not really good news for Control :(
the 2 million included all versions of the game on all platforms (PC/Ps4/Xbox) since launch and the game has been heavily discounted on all platforms.

As for the game I blame the media's trashing of Quantum Break for the poor reception of Control.
Sure the media praised Control but the majority of YouTubers were quick to point out that it was familiar to Quantum Break with good or bad the same issues ( Stutter, Performance issues, Ai, collecting stuff).

Stanjara1986d ago

I blame Remedy for the lack of goodwill.

MadLad1986d ago

2 million is a solid number. They're not a gigantic studio, and half the money spent didn't go into a giant marketing campaign.

You're looking too much into it.

JEECE1986d ago (Edited 1986d ago )

Yeah people don't ever factor in what was spent on a game. The budget for Control was only $30 million, and the game wasn't heavily advertised.

It's so odd, because people seem to be able to understand that a small budget movie can make $50 million at the box office, never be the #1 movie, and be a big financial success, while a big budget movie might be #1 for a few weeks and gross a few hundred million dollars, but be a failure due to a high budget and large marketing campaign. However, for some reason in games people seem unable to measure success in anything other than absolute numbers without context.

Petebloodyonion1986d ago (Edited 1986d ago )

They got the biggest advertisement by being on the PlayStation E3 stage to show off their game, they are now also backed by 505 Games.
We could also mentioned that they got the Zelda treatment for the review of Control and suddenly all the flaws aside FMV from Quantum Break suddenly vanished from reviews. ( Long loading time, Framerate issues?, Basic AI, the basic gunplay, etc)
Actually just read Peter North's review of both game to see how suddenly the flaws of one game changed to the biggest strength by changing collecting Email to collecting Memo
https://www.gamespot.com/re...
https://www.gamespot.com/re...
Yet one game is considered average and the other is considered a must have game despite minimal changes.

@Jeece they are not talking about profit but about unit solds
For a game so praised and heavily discounted 2 millions units sold across all platforms isn't that much.

MadLad1986d ago

@Pete

Just chill out lol.

You're childish and think your opinion needs to be fact.
Being shown at a PS/MS event is a big thing. Of course. But it's far from the biggest showing to be had, and it's far from pumping millions into constant ads across TV and the internet, being seen by millions, constantly.

You act like 505 acting as a publisher was this giant silver spoon for them when, in reality, they are just a mid-tier publisher and couldn't provide said millions of dollars for advertising of the game.

"I found this review where one journalist was being hypocritical"

Yeah? So what? Everyone is hypocritical at times.
Maybe the did some things well as to it blinded him of other things?
Did this hypocritical review change the fact the game won awards based on majority feedback?

I played both games. If anything, Quantum Break was treated unfairly, and Control was given the respect it deserves.
But that's just my OPINION.
But look at that, it gives a counter argument to the "Quantum Break" was looked at as average, while Control is held up as great; therefore this is all BS" narrative you're trying to create.

LucasRuinedChildhood1986d ago (Edited 1986d ago )

Yeah, it's all about what you make relative to your costs and your projections. It didn't need to set the world on fire and top the charts to make a profit and be a success.

I think some people used the flawed perspective you're addressing to justify micro-transactions as well but if we the video-game equivalent of something like BoxOfficeMojo, you wouldn't hear much of that anymore.

AirRevenant1986d ago

Does that count selling the game to people twice?

MadLad1986d ago

Being that the consoles just came out ... no. And nobody forced anyone to buy it on the new consoles.

Just saying.

AirRevenant1986d ago

The ultimate edition sales are on ps4, for "free upgrades" to ps5.

No one is saying anybody forced anything, and we don't need to rehash the lying and lack of goodwill from 505 compared to most all other companies.

Also, they now have delayed the upgrade ontop of it all.

MadLad1986d ago

Just to return to your initial question, I highly doubt a giant number of new players ran out to buy the PS4 "Ultimate Edition" for the chance to play it on PS5.

So, to answer your question, I doubt that number was highly bumped by double dippers.

CrimsonWing691986d ago

that one got a chuckle out of me.

Father__Merrin1986d ago

Quantum break was excellent this is also excellent. Hate it when genuine good games fly under the radar

RgR1986d ago (Edited 1986d ago )

Say what you want about these guys but I love the stories they tell.

First time I saw control gameplay I thought it was a bit wonky. But then I played it and man is the game impressive

Report: New Trademark for "Control: Resonant" Unearthed, Ahead of TGA

New evidence suggests a Control reveal is imminent. A trademark discovery ahead of The Game Awards hints at big news for Remedy's franchise.

Storm23171d ago

Control was really good. There was a ton of backtracking and running through the building from one end to the other a ton of times, but otherwise I loved it. Can't wait to see the sequel.

medman170d ago

Yeah it was awesome....looking forward to this reveal

REDGUM171d ago

I really enjoyed Control though without the mini map i found myself lost and or unsure of what to do too often and gave in on the game about 30% in.
Ive just re-downloaded it with the latest update with the enhanced graphics but unaure I'll dig back into it agaith with my current backlog.
Looking forward to seeing whats next from Remedy though.

toxic-inferno170d ago

I know exactly what you mean. I've played the game through twice and have had the same issue both times.

What I found on my latest playthrough was that the best way to navigate is to use the physical signs in-game as well as the map.

How the Remedy Connected Universe does the multiverse right

ScribbleCat said: Media is certainly no stranger to connecting all their properties together. Comic books have been doing this for generations, and TV is also known for special crossover episodes, which confirm the notion that they take place in the same fictional world. Video games, which can be barely called a new medium at this point, also have some interesting overlaps with connecting different games. For example, Valve’s Portal and Half-Life show how subtle hints can give players more theories to chew on. Old classics like DOOM and Wolfenstein also share similarities. But my favorite connection between games is the Remedy Connected Universe. While only a connection between Alan Wake and Control have been confirmed, there is SO much more to explore with Remedy’s crazy take on this old formula. And, according to Sam Lake, this is only the beginning.

SimpleSlave330d ago

They really should release the full Quantum Break experience on the PS5. Sure, it's a middle-of-the-road third-person shooter and a perfect example of self-indulgence, but why not? It was fun in short burst and it completes the Remedy set until Max Payne 1+2 Remakes get released later on.

Do it, Microsawft. Don't be cowards.

eh?
They better not mess much with the Max Payne Remake(s)

Yui_Suzumiya545d ago

Yeah but this was announced before the Max Payne Remake after all

LucasRuinedChildhood544d ago (Edited 544d ago )

What does "unlocking some previously released content" actually mean though? I would imagine it should be "previously unreleased content". Bit odd.

DaReapa544d ago

Right. Especially since the Ultimate Edition supposedly contained everything.

raWfodog545d ago

I only played about an hour of Control when I added it to my library back when it was one of the PS+ ‘free’ games. I’ll start it over again after the early 2025 update is dropped. I keep hearing that it’s a good game.

jznrpg544d ago

You can make that statement for any game. It’s called gameplay loop. Not everyone is going to enjoy the same loops but all games are repetitive by nature

RedDevils544d ago

Agree it was very boring game. Could not get into it. Remember me the game I played on PS3 is still better than this.

Chocoburger545d ago

These days "RPG" translates to constantly grinding for experience points, wasting time upgrading gear, and repeatedly collecting resources off the ground.

Please don't be an Ubishit style filler game.

Yui_Suzumiya545d ago

Hopefully it'll be more like Mass Effect

Amplitude544d ago (Edited 544d ago )

Remedy doesn't really make mistakes. It'll be good, I'm sure.

Inverno545d ago

So in other words it's an action game needlessly fluffed out with RPG mechanics and a pointless leveling system. I really enjoy RPGs when they're actually RPGs but modern action games really tire me out when they shoehorn in mechanics they don't need. All this does is make a 20 hour game into a 40 hour game because missions become locked behind level requirements, and enemies become damage sponges. It's not fun, it's tedious.
