Sony confirms the PS5 won’t support SSD storage expansion at launch

Blazing-fast storage but not a lot — and you’ll have to wait to add more.

Yeah, Cerny said that during the tech discussion. Fine by me as SSD prices are expected to come down a bit through 2021.

gamer78041898d ago

yah they will definitely come down,i debated on waiting on getting my XSX expansion card later when more brands came out and prices dropped but i had the cash so went for it, for ps5 i'll just wait til the approved brands are out, i'm guessing mid 2021

dantesparda1898d ago

Its actually less than that (664GB) becuase Playstations dont let you use the drives all the way down to zero like Xboxes do. On my 4TB HDD i cant update CODMW that needs a 80B patch even thought i have over 250GB left!!! Sony needs to address and explain what s oing on there. This is unknown issue/thing. But nobody is sure why and Sony doesnt say a thing. On Xbox One you can download til nothing.

Kaze881897d ago

@dantesparda

I have 4GB left in my 2TB HDD and can even install small games to that.

Could it be that MW patch reallocates or reorders most of the install so it basically needs to have patch amount and installed amount space fee. idk. never had that kind of issue.

crazyCoconuts1898d ago

what's kinda cool is that there is hardly anything out there fast enough yet. Last i heard only one brand had one that looked capable of matching the speed. Talk about forward looking...

Profchaos1898d ago

Yeah crazy part is that drive for a 2tb model is the same price as the entire console goes to show just how much ch engineering went into the SSD architecture

gamer78041897d ago

They are already available. Samsung and WD I believe has them. But Sony hasn’t officially approved them but pc users can buy them. Here is a link. https://shop.westerndigital...

strifeblade1897d ago (Edited 1897d ago )

You normal? You think Sony god SSD is expected to come down in price the second it releases? Get real

darthv721898d ago

Considering they are still validating various brands and capacities... this is not surprising.

umair_s511898d ago

Them launching like this is a surprise

Kaze881897d ago

In June they explicitly told that fast enough SSD would most likely not arrive before release. Then we have Corona that has been a burden to every manufacturer at any industry. Yes, very surprising xD

RaidenBlack1898d ago

So how long one needs to be stuck with 667GB of fast storage?
.
Well ... fret not. Just get a good external USB-SATA SSD.

oakshin1898d ago

Don't think that will work for ps5 games maybe in a few years but for now any ssd expansion has to be internal and it's going to take awhile and cost alot

This ssd tech is the new cell in a way its ahead of the game and is going to take the industry time to catch up

RaidenBlack1898d ago

That has been established for quite a while now, that proper next-gen titles won't run off of the SATA storages on both platforms. You need the PCIe-based solutions for those.
But all games can be stored on the external SATA storages. Just need to perform a transfer from the external storage if the game you want to play happens to be a next-gen title.

oof461898d ago

I watched ACG's review of the Xbox One X. He showed how fast transfers are from a HDD to the console's SSD. I expect it to be a similar quick experience on the ps5.

purple1011898d ago

Nah it will be twice as fast.

I kid not. Xsx has half speed USB.

Ps5 has the ful speed full fat 10gbs per sec.

I kid you not.

oof461898d ago

@purple101: Great news for those who will own a ps5.

NEXUS-61898d ago

I bought an NVMe drive and an enclosure, cost around $300au.

Very, very fast transferring PS4 games to it - 90 gig took 15min and 1.34 gig took 15 seconds.

I expect the PS5 to be even quicker.

DaveZero1898d ago

Xbox standard can do that between two consoles normal drives at that time on data transferring.

NEXUS-61898d ago

What?

This is about transferring to an external drive.

I won't call you out, but I'm pretty sure HDD aren't that fast.

Mr_Luke1898d ago

@Nexus-6
Correct, HDD aren't that fast. Even a 10k SAS isn't that fast.

Eidolon1898d ago (Edited 1898d ago )

NVMe will be way faster. You're bottlenecked by the PS4 storage. Even USB NVMe SSD to internal PS5 SSD is gonna be blazing fast, closer reaching the upper limit. 2GB/s NVMe SSDs are pretty common right now. A 90GB game I would think should take less than a minute if it reaches it's maximum.

NEXUS-61898d ago

Eidolon - I grabbed the Adata XPG NVMe - 3,500 read/write or thereabouts.

And - yes the PS4 is the bottleneck, quite excited to see how well it works with the PS5.

tombfan1898d ago

Use an external HDD to exchange games between the PS5 ssd and the HDD

oakshin1898d ago

He's using that ssd so it will transfer faster

DaveZero1898d ago

Well yeah but many fanboys want to slate the Series S despite this being the option for all the consoles and using this gens storage drives.

It's a lame pointless attack on a console that will still be good and should be better than what is out as of now this gen.

Babadook71898d ago (Edited 1898d ago )

" Just get a good external USB-SATA SSD."

Yup. You will still need to transfer the games into internal to play but that will be much quicker than downloading from the internet.

Sunny_D1898d ago

Do you know if I can store PS5 games on a standard external hard drive? I would just have to transfer them to the PS5’s SSD to play them right? Do we need to do that for PS4 games as well to take advantage of the better performance and loading?

NEXUS-61898d ago

Yes - any enhancements to PS4 games need to be done from the internal SSD.

All games can be stored externally, but again - PS5 games will need to be on the internal SSD to play.

Neonridr1898d ago

you can use that method for temporarily storing your games, but will still need to copy back and forth if you plan to play them.

andy851898d ago

I'm not too fussed either. I assume I can plug my external SSD that I have in my PS4 in and store games I'm not playing at that moment then transfer them over if I need them?

DashMad1898d ago

let's hope the PS5 not using PS4 installation system that thing suck ass i can't install 50gb game when i have 80gb left on PS4 HDD.

DarthZoolu1897d ago

You can not store PS5 games on an External drive at all!

RaidenBlack1897d ago

Yea ... just read that. What a poor decision.

ziggurcat1897d ago

Yes you can. Format to use on PS5, that's it.

WhiteHawk1895d ago

You can’t actually store PS5 games on an external drive, and I do mean just move them there, current firmware doesn’t allow that, only PS4 games can be moved from one to the other. Hopefully they will allow it in an update shortly.

Atticus_finch1898d ago

I wasn't going to buy one anytime soon regardless. My 2tb external is all I need.

AcidDvl1898d ago

That way you'll go back to old 20+ second loadings...

Atticus_finch1898d ago

I don't think you know how ps5 works.

AcidDvl1898d ago

@Atticus_finch

I don't think you know how data streaming works...

DarkZane1898d ago

@AcidDvl he can easily transfer his games from external to internal hard drive when he wants to play.

DJStotty1897d ago

@AcidDvl

"That way you'll go back to old 20+ second loadings..."

Not when they transfer the game to the internal SSD, i am using my 2TB HDD for storage, and will transfer games when needed.

AcidDvl1897d ago

@Atticus_finch, nah mate, bless YOUR heart, my sweet summer child

Best Adventure Game of 2025

VGChartz's Lee Mehr: "While not carrying the same heft it enjoyed long ago, last year was one of the adventure genre's most commercially-successful years in this century. A Telltale-esque adventure eclipsing 3 million sales in three months would be the talk of the town were it not for another adventure game hurdling over 10 million sales in two. Though not all finalists reached those heights, each did share a greater amount of spotlight compared to similar titles within their respective sub-genres.

Past any sales thresholds and popularity contests, 2025 also deserves credit for its creativity; the last time our entire shortlist consisted exclusively of new IPs was for Best Adventure Game of 2020. An impressive year for the genre, with even greater potential ahead."
