Sony Confirms You Can Disable DualSense Features

In a post about accessibility on PlayStation, Sony confirmed that you can turn off the Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Trigger features of their DualSense controller.

RaidenBlack2039d ago

"A much concern has come from disabled gamers. The adaptive triggers fighting back sounds great until you’re not able to enjoy such experiences to the full extent."

LucasRuinedChildhood2038d ago

Nice that they finally answered this question. I have a Tenosynovitis in my hands (particularly my left one) so I'm happy I don't have to worry about this anymore.

SullysCigar2038d ago

Sorry to hear that mate, but good to hear you're catered for at least.

Also, anyone claiming concern over battery life (despite Sony confirming 50% increase over DS4) can turn off haptics, adaptive triggers and the like to save themselves a little more battery now too, which is a nice option I guess.

I'm looking forward to enjoying the DualSense and all the new functionality, personally.

S2Killinit2038d ago

This is good news. My brother was asking if he could turn it off because he prefers to play FPS without vibration.

Atom6662039d ago

I always appreciate these types of accessibility options. It's a good move.

But...if the unique features of the Dual Sense can be turned off...that tell me again why I can't use my DS4s?

Welshy2038d ago (Edited 2038d ago )

I'll never understand why this is suddenly an issue. I never heard of anyone who wanted to continue using their old controllers as their main on newer consoles.

I'm not saying I'm opposed to the compatibility of older pads, but people are out here acting like they aren't packing PS5 controllers with the PS5.

I assume the people who are complaining about this want to play their Xbox One's with the OG Xbox Duke pad and PS4's with PS1 pads?

Extermin8or3_2038d ago

Probably a matter if the version of Bluetooth being in use for higher bandwidth as their is more data to transfer...

Atom6662038d ago

@Welshy

Just because you've been dicked over in the past, doesn't mean you always have to accept it.

I'll continue to use DS4 and Xb1 controllers on PC for years to come. It's nice not to be forced to buy everything all over again.

ziggurcat2037d ago

@atom:

"I'll continue to use DS4 and Xb1 controllers on PC for years to come. It's nice not to be forced to buy everything all over again."

Who's forcing who into buying what, now? You're supplied with a DuelSense controller with the PS5, which you can use to continue to enjoy your PS4 titles on the new console. You're not being forced into buying a DuelSense controller to continue to play your games on PC, either.

Saigon2038d ago

That's a horrible rebuttal only because most of us have yet to use the DualSense. We don't know how this pad will fill in our hands but we are writing it off as something we shouldn't use... yeah I call BS. Especially since most game reporters have praised the DualSense. and the adaptive triggers aren't the only thing that's added to this device. The haptic feedback has gotten a lot of praises as well. So your comment of saying why you can't use the DS4, is a horrible comment.

Atom6662038d ago

You can apparently turn haptics off too.

I'll play Miles Morales on PS4 w/DS4 next month. I can play all of those PS5 multiplats with a host of pads on PC.

I can use a DS4 to play some of those same PS5 games on Xcloud ffs.

It's probably a fantastic controller. But the truth is that it's only necessary because they said so.

Freshnikes2038d ago

Bro those are x box ( haters ) they been using the same controller with batteries for about 20 yrs. a new console should have a new controller. End of story

Saigon2038d ago

@Freshnikes

I know; They act as though the DualSense is trash because of all its features and they have yet to even try it.

InklingGirl2038d ago

Exactly! You can’t use DS4 but a Dual Sense can be use in the PS3... I’m confused.

Welshy2038d ago

You're confusing forward compatibility with backward compatibility.

This isn't difficult. Your point would only be valid if you Dualshock 3's could be play PS5 games but Dualshock 4's couldn't.

The PS4 pad is compatible with up to PS4 games, the PS5 pad is compatible up to PS5 games and both work with previous gens.

Ashunderfire862038d ago

Ha you saw Marlon Nation’s podcast right? Lol 😂 it was crazy how he could play Uncharted 3 with the Dualsense on PS3, but can’t play it on the PS4 smh 🤦‍♂️ if you play it on the PS3 it’s like using the Playstation 1 controller that YouTuber stated.

porkChop2038d ago

Yeah, that's a good question. If you disable all the features it's just a basic controller at that point, no different from a DS4 with the features disabled. So their excuse about not being able to use a DS4 because of the new features doesn't add up.

It's really just about business. They want people to buy the new controller, and that's understandable to an extent.

SmokinAces2038d ago

Difference being someone else who may want to use the features could always turn them back on, can't do that if its a DS4.

Atom6662038d ago

Agree- understandable business move.

For those who claimed any other reasons...well, I think they've been fully shutdown at this point.

S2Killinit2038d ago (Edited 2038d ago )

For the same reason that when you buy a windows you dont get to use your code to download the next version of windows. Otherwise, why would MS go through the trouble of making an updated version of windows for you? Are they in love with your eyebrows?

Jesus guys, grasping at straws at this point. Suck it up, xbox doesn’t have a new controller, PlayStation does. Live with it.

porkChop2038d ago

That's not a good analogy at all.

When you buy a new version of Windows your old accessories and peripherals will still work even if they don't support the newer features of the OS.

2038d ago
Atom6662038d ago

Lol. Did I strike a nerve?

Wtf are you even trying to say S2? Of all the analogies to use, you choose to equate it to an OS that was given as a free upgrade? And you know, if I want to install an old version of Windows on a new PC, I can do so, too.

My eyebrows are lovely btw.

It's a legit question for the corp defenders. They said the unique features made it "necessary" to exclude DS4 support.

Some of us raised one of our beautiful eyebrows on that, and said: "most of these PS5 games are multiplat, so DS4s obviously work." Now they're saying that the unique features can be switched off.

So if it's just to force us to buy $70 pads, at least cut the BS and say it.

S2Killinit2038d ago (Edited 2038d ago )

@PorkChop
The other accessories and peripherals are made by ‘other’ companies. If any of those companies upgrade or come out with new accessories, they dont send you a free version of their upgraded accessories do they?

S2Killinit2038d ago (Edited 2038d ago )

@Atom666
Strawman much? If you want to be willfully ignorant I cant help you. No matter how beautiful your eyebrows are.

The irony of it all is that you got your panties in a bunch to defend MS, and MS charges for services. That’s the ultimate form of charging you over and over for the same thing. Last I checked your MS programs expire, and MS wants you to buy new versions, sometimes barely distinguishable ones. Like I said, its a new controller, dont cry about it.

King_Noctis2038d ago

Actually Xbox SX has a new controller with new shape and button, just no fancy haptics stuff. And you’re comparing hardware with software, it doesn’t make any sense.

S2Killinit2038d ago (Edited 2038d ago )

@king-noctis
Ok, so I can use my 360 controller on my xbox one then yes? And dont run away guys I want an answer from you.

King_Noctis2037d ago (Edited 2037d ago )

“ Ok, so I can use my 360 controller on my xbox one then yes? And dont run away guys I want an answer from you.”

So can you use your PS3 controller on the PS4? Heck, can you use your PS2 controller on the PS3? You can’t deflect the issue here because we are talking about about this gen and the next, not two or three gens ago.

And if Sony allow you to disable haptic feedback, then what can the Dualsense do that the Dualshock 4 can’t?

S2Killinit2037d ago (Edited 2037d ago )

King-noctis
What are you even on about? You’re complaining that Dualsense is required for PS5 games. Then you said softwares arent a good example, so I gave you a literal like for like example. And your defense is that this has always been the case with console controllers? Thats MY argument, not yours.

Are you three 5 years old, or just like to act like one?

ziggurcat2037d ago

@Atom:

Your entire argument is flawed.

There'd be no reason why you'd need to use a DS4, even for playing PS4 titles on your PS5 - the console comes with a DuelSense controller that you can use to play those titles. No one's forcing anyone to have to buy a new controller.

Oh I wonder why I can not reuse my brakes from my 40 year old car on my new that I just bought! Unbelievable!

Atom6662038d ago

That's the best analogy you could think of?

Nacho_Z2038d ago

People here pretending that they're baffled by a) the concept of a company wanting to sell peripherals b) said company not openly admitting they're trying to make as much money as they can, because it's distasteful to say so.

Believe it or not companies such as Sony, and yes even Microsoft, want to sell you things.

Atom6662038d ago

I'm not confused by a corp wanting to milk me.

I'm confused by the consumers who deny it and make excuses for them.

Nacho_Z2038d ago

"But...if the unique features of the Dual Sense can be turned off...that tell me again why I can't use my DS4s?"

"I'm not confused by a corp wanting to milk me."

Like I said, you're pretending to be baffled because apparently you know exactly why they're doing it.

Atom6662038d ago

Quote the next line, Nacho.

Not pretending. Fanboys who defend corps do baffle me. Just calling out their nonsense.

But you understand that.

SullysCigar2038d ago

I mean it's that simple. No need for all the faux outrage lol

They've clearly spent a lot of money on R&D for this thing and they want people to use it. If you let consumers use DS4, even DS3 - and assuming those tight folk made up a notable percentage - that reduces the incentive for developers to adapt their games to utilise the new technology.

Devs want you to experience the game in line with their vision, consistently across users. Sony want you to have the best next gen experience with their cool new kit. They also want to recoup the R&D costs and possibly see some revenue from it - shocking, I know lol

Being able to turn off these features because it doesn't work with an affliction (see LucasRuinedChildhood above) or just because you bloody well feel like it is a good thing, but the usual guys insist on trying to spin it into some nefarious act. It's sad AND funny lol

Atom6662037d ago

I'd be interested if you'd like to point out where in my comment I've said something you disagree with and why?

gerbintosh2038d ago

@atom666

You can still use your ds4 to play ps4 games on the ps5.

You can't use your ds4 to play ps5 games due to the additional features in the controller. Sony wants people to get the full experience and if for some reason people have a disability it would be nice to turn them off.

Turning it off is something I would do. I have never liked any form of controller vibration, and those adaptive triggers are something that would seriously annoy me if I was forced to use it.

gamer78042038d ago

i've heard others say that too, personally i like vibration when its done subtlety well, i've had a couple games that used it so fiercely i had to shut it off. One of them i think was the sword art online fatal bullet game.

lukasmain2038d ago

SegaGamer2037d ago (Edited 2037d ago )

And Witchcraft didn't lie, you literally said Destruction AllStars was a fun multiplayer title without even playing it.

lukasmain2037d ago (Edited 2037d ago )

WELL OBVIOUSLY I haven't played it. It's not even out yet. I meant that it looks fun.

We should wait and see what the developer can do with this new controller first. I would be pretty pissed off if they jam the controller in the middle of a gunfight due to the gun overheating or something, but there will be a lot more cases where I can see this adaptive trigger being used correctly.

emoneyjones2037d ago

eventually i got tired of vibrations since i play a lot of games that require some kind of focus. i've had them off for years now. can't go against the sony feature agenda though here

Old news. We've known this for a while.

Also, no different than being able to turn off similar features on the DS4 controller.

Shiken2038d ago

So their reason for not allowing PS4 controllers to work on the PS5...is due to the new features in the dual sense...

But you can turn off those features if you want...because they are not required?

Huh? You can pair PS5 controllers to android devices running Android 12 or later.

Hope they add this to the PSVR2 controllers because I use them on PC and PS5 Pro.

OpenGL311d ago

Thank you! PSVR2 has been great since they opened it up to support the PC. It was always neat on PS5 but kind of an expensive toy for it to be locked to one platform. Now it has a ton of value that it works on both PS5 and PC.

I wish you could have different setups for if you are using PC or console. I don't want to have to re-run the entire setup process because I used a different machine that day.

Why Haven’t Console Makers Switched to Hall Effect Joysticks?

No idea but I have got all 6 of my controllers modded now with TMR sticks for 20$ each

joab777321d ago

How did you manage that? Bought kits?

jznrpg320d ago (Edited 320d ago )

Guy I know on eBay installs them. I send them to him he sends them back. I think regular price is 25$ (for tmr sticks and installation, can’t beat that really unless you do it yourself) and the more you get repaired the cheaper it is but we have done some business before so he gave me a discount. There are multiple people that offer services so check eBay who will install what you want. Hall effect, TMR, battery upgrades

Jin_Sakai321d ago

Yep TMR (Tunneling MagnetoResistance) sticks are even better than Hall Effect. Speaking of drift just had another PS5 controller start drifting. This makes 3rd one since launch! These things are way too expensive to not have TMR sticks.

jznrpg320d ago

I never had issues with stick drift until my kids used theirs and then my PS5 controllers and they went through 4 real fast. So I said f it I’m getting them all
Modded now instead of buying new controllers.

Killer2020UK322d ago (Edited 322d ago )

It's almost as if they want to keep cost price down and repeat sales high 🤷‍♂️

For those interested, on a tangential but somewhat relevant thread, the Centennial Light is an incandescent light bulb recognized as the oldest known operating light bulb. It was first illuminated in 1901.

But why, if lightbulbs can last this long, do we still have bulbs that burn out after a while? Well, the Phoebus cartel was an international cartel that controlled the manufacture and sale of incandescent light bulbs in much of Europe and North America between 1925 and 1939. The cartel took over market territories and lowered the useful life of such bulbs, which is commonly cited as an example of planned obsolescence.

Following its dissolution, light bulbs continued to be sold at the 1,000-hour life standardized by the cartel.

Proof that products are often intentionally designed to fail and proof that nobody seems to protect the consumer when there's money to be made.

BlaqMagiq1322d ago

Learn something new everyday. Thank you for this.

ppm1100321d ago

Centennial Light as an example of planned obsolescence is kind of a myth - https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Babadook7321d ago

Haha. The plot thickens. However even this guy admits planned obsolescence is probably real.

clevernickname321d ago

You completely misconstrue the aims of the Phoebus Cartel. Their objective was not planned obsolescence but to standardize the lightbulb market. You can make a lightbulb last hundreds of years, but it won't output much light. The Centennial Light barely puts out any light at all! The Phoebus Cartel was formed to standardize light design, light output, and quality, and since the life of an incandescent bulb is based on the amount of light it produces, it did have the side effect of determining lifebulb lifetimes.

BlackCountryBob322d ago

I think the Switch 2 is a slightly different reason, primarily that if Nintendo introduced them it could be used against them in the many lawsuits they face about the JoyCons for the Switch 1.

I’m not sure how anyone could answer the questions “why did you change this in your new console and what are the benefits” without talking about reliability / lifespan which they are claiming were entirely normal (ie why change it if you want to claim it was already fine).

Melankolis322d ago

Isn't drifting an exaggerated issue?. Never had issue with drifting controller from PS1 to PS3 + Xbox OG to Xbox 360. Meanwhile Nintendo's handheld always has issues whether the hinge, screen, shoulder buttons, etc.

322d ago Replies(1)
shinXseijuro322d ago

You just answered your own question ! Controllers back then did not suffer from the issue because the quality of the sticks used to be better it would take a lot for a controller to start drifting . Nowadays since the ps4/one days controllers tho offering more are made in a way that it doesn’t take much for one’s controller to start drifting . Ever since I bought my ps5 in 2020 I easily ran thru about 8 controllers . I play a lot of fighting games and stuff like apex which all take a heavy toll on the sticks

Mr_cheese322d ago

I'd personally never had an issue with stick drift from ps1 to ps4 and then I got a ps5 with two controllers. Both got stick drift on the left stick within the space of a year.

I didn't believe in the scale of it and then blam. Now I'm a believer.

Profchaos321d ago (Edited 321d ago )

I used to think this also as I had never had an issue despite having a ps1 duelshock, ps2, ps3, ps4, 360, xone, switch, wii u, gc, wii and others

neutralgamer1992443d ago

I have been a PS fan since day one and last year switched to PC and to me Xbox series controller just feels better (no doubt features wise dual sense has more to offer but the feel in hand xbox feels more natural)

RupeeHoarder443d ago

The feel between the two is negligible at best. One thing I can absolutely say is not negligible is the sound difference. The Series controller is a loud, clicky, cheap sounding mess.

DodoDojo443d ago

I prefer the Xbox controller too. I think there was a Steam survey that showed 60% of the controllers used were Xbox controllers.

VenomUK442d ago (Edited 442d ago )

Just wait until Microsoft starts selling Xbox controllers for PS5. I joke, I joke, that’s one red line Microsoft will never cross…

Promise?

Will it?

MUMMY.

darthv72442d ago

DS has the better actuators but the XB feels better to hold. It is clicky... but that audible feedback is nice to hear. Then again i also like the classic clicky keyboards of yore.

Si-Fly442d ago

Hopefully Sony will get the ergonomics right one day, they’ve come a long way since the PS1 but Xbox has always had comfier controllers.

KyRo442d ago

I have both and it blows my head when people say the Xbox controller is better. The controller sounds cheap and hollow when moving the analogue sticks. The vibration feedback is pretty naff and the LB/RB buttons are like digital mouse buttons.

I've not used the Elite controller myself but the standard one just doesn't compare with the Duel Sense.

Rockstar442d ago

@ RupeeHoarder

I absolutely agree. The Xbox controller is indeed a loud, clicky cheap feeling controller. I prefer my dual sense and 8bitdo Ultimate controllers. But in my opinion all of these controllers are very comfortable

neutralgamer1992442d ago

Guys I just shared my opinion on what felt better in my hands. Dual sense has more features like I said and I agree compared to Xbox controller DS feels premium. I wish Sony would give the option between having a normal dual sense and one layed out like Xbox controller and I wish Xbox would do the same. Having more options is better for us all

Controllers are such a subjective matter. What feels good in my hands might not in another gamers hands

MASTER_RAIDEN442d ago (Edited 442d ago )

I honestly can’t believe people still argue about this. The Xbox controller is significantly more ergonomic/comfortable than anything PlayStation has ever put out. Do you guys like those weirdly stiff, gross feeling dualsense triggers? How about that giant useless touchpad in between the and share buttons (2 of the worst buttons I’ve ever used on a controller). The triggers on the dualsense bottom out at an inward angle for crying out loud. The PS button feels weird and should probably just be a circle shape with the ps logo like it was on ps3. I love PlayStation and haven’t owned anything Xbox since the 360, but let’s just be honest. Xbox one controllers onward NAIL the controller feel. PlayStation controllers just have really awkward design decisions.

Goodguy01442d ago (Edited 442d ago )

Preference

babadivad442d ago

Exactly. Xbox has the better controller.

rocky047586442d ago

Really? I really think the people that say this MUST have small hands. There's NO way if you have big hands that you'd think the Xbox Series X controller feels natural in your hands. To me, it feels small and my hands feel like it's smothering the controller. It feels awkward to hold compared to the hefty PS5 Dual Sense controller. I'm not body shaming small hands either, sorry if it sounds like it.

neutralgamer1992442d ago

Rocky I am 6-4 with quite large hands. I have a otter box cover OK my controllers. Yes without that she'll case I definitely think it's too small

phatak442d ago (Edited 442d ago )

well thats your personal opinion, im a full time pc gamer and the dualsense is easily the best controller ever made, the texture effect on the back and sides of the xbox controller this generation is extremely strong that it feels awful, I literally have to use a rubber cover or wear gloves to make that texture go away, it feels like saw dust. Playstation also has a texture but its much more normal feeling, the last time microsoft had a better controller than sony was the xbox 360, xbox one and ps4 dualshock were basically a tie, while dualsense smokes the series s/x controller for me personally

Profchaos442d ago

I've got to admit I never liked the Xbox one design the stick tension is wrong it's shoulder buttons don't feel right the grips are not as ergonomic and I don't like using it for long periods of time but the 360 pad was perfection I still use it over the Xbox one controller

TheEroica442d ago

The Sony defense force is gonna hate your comment. They're corporate bootlickers so expect downvotes.

PanicMechanic442d ago

The Xbox series controller is inferior to the Dualsense in just about every way possible. Dualsense feels better in my hands. Haptic feedback obviously makes the Dualsense the better controller and that can’t even be debated.

The series controller feels too “narrow” in my hands compared to the Dualsense

crazyCoconuts442d ago

On PC the biggest drawback of dualshock/dualsense is lack of universal support.
Once you've got DS4Windows / Steam Support configured, the Sony controllers simply have more features.
I can use the trackpad as a mouse which is really useful in Windows.
I can also use the gyro in Steam games for fine tuned aiming which is a great feature once you get used to it.
The other advanced features that the dualsense have are great (triggers, better haptics), but having to connect it via USB just to find most PC games don't support it isn't great at all.

Anyway this user mod doesn't support any of that greatness on xbox anyway... i was just talking about PC

Goodguy01442d ago

Budget 3rd party controllers have been amazing lately that even include back buttons, great battery life, trigger stops, and hall effects for $40-$60. 3rd party has been amazing and stepping it up, I'd recommend them if you're on PC. Official controllers by the big 3 and pro controllers are selling them overpriced and have some features fail within a year as a person who's tried out many controllers myself.

gold_drake442d ago

fuck no
i hate the xbox controllers. they are so bulky and loud for no good reason.

the biggest drawback of the somy controllers is the lack of 100% support.

Profchaos442d ago (Edited 442d ago )

Only because of the ease of use connecting a Microsoft product to a PC. It's just plug and play unlike the dualsense. I personally use an Xbox controller too on my laptop, but if it was as flawless I'd be using a dualsense every time.

This is a huge win. I will try this as soon as I get home before Microsoft pulls the app. The only thing that is left is for someone to mod the dual sense controller buttons with Xbox buttons.

Ok, to add an update. The app works, but you will need a PC or Android phone to act as a middleman to manage the connection between the console and the dual-sense controller. I was able to connect my dual sense using Bluetooth to my laptop, and then my laptop was able to connect to the Xbox via wifi.

I was able to control the Xbox dash board using the controller, and I tried playing 2 games. I tried the Xbox 360 version of Sonic Generations (disk version), but that didn't work. I then tried playing Forza Horizon 4 (Digital), and I was able to control the game without any noticeable input lag. I expected the game to have rumble like PS4 games on the PS5, however, there was no vibration what so ever. I was only able to experience the novelty of using a dual sense controller to control the Xbox Series X. In its current state, you are better off just using the Xbox controller.

The flaw I noticed is that if you have Steam running on your PC and you press the Playstation button thinking it will take you back to the dashboard, you are wrong. It will just launch Steam big picture mode on the PC, and at that point you have to focus on what is on your PC because you don't want to press and open something accidentally. It seems you will still need an Xbox controller to get back to the dashboard/home screen. It doesn't matter if you exit Steam on your PC.
