Why PS5’s User Interface Kicks Ass

Sexy and exotic. It’s the best way to describe the new user interface of the PlayStation 5.

The interface is genius in that it evolves the gamer experience. For all the vapid talk of next generation wrapped up in paper numbers, hit your head harder against the wall approaches, Sony stepped back and rethought the gamer equation and truly innovated. More horsepower isn’t a true leading edge departure. It is why they shifted laterally with the SSE and IO. Work smart. The new UI and included features are another example of Sony leapfrogging current systems and providing gamers a true paradigm shift in the way we enjoy our hobby.

Agreed and we still haven’t seen all the details on the PS5 UI. Only 25 days to launch!

morganfell2035d ago

Still that seems like an eternity ha ha. Now the only thing I require from Sony is information on the VR adapter for my PS4 camera.

Your post reads like Sony PR but, I agree totally with your statement and I'll add to it. Sony is quietly assessing, trying to find the best way to leverage their vast technical knowledge and hardware engineering prowess to find the best outcome to provide a truly innovative product without breaking the bank on production costs.

morganfell2035d ago (Edited 2035d ago )

I could have posted that the UI was okay but that would have been neither correct nor honest. I am actually the one that agreed with your remark, particularly the latter portions. I have read paragraphs where people were gushing over a title or device in a particular game, hitting 4K but such an achievement is at the end of the day not only a distraction but also quite worthless. I do not care for Digital Foundry for a host of reasons but I will give credit where it is due. The importance of 4K is not what it once was as developers begin to implement a host of techniques that not only provide a greater visual impact than higher resolution but also function at a much greater bang for the buck ratio. 4K as some sort of make or break goal needs to die. It is one thing to investigate the specifications of a title and then applaud the developers for a technical achievement. But employing it as some sort of make or break goal or attack where, once aware, it actually affects how you consider the enjoyment from a title is absurd to say the least. This is particularly applicable since most often the human eye is clueless as to the resolution of a game unless you are looking at comparisons with vastly different settings. In addition have never read or heard an excited gamer recalling a memorable session and they stating, "Remember that time we were running in 4k..." It isn't a takeaway or something that stays with us as a game memory weeks or years after we finish a title.

The reason I am bringing up 4K in this discussion is it has taken an undeserved front seat in defining next generation when in fact it should be sitting near the back or better still left standing at the bus stop. By comparison this UI that Sony has demonstrated is far more innovative and possesses the ability to impact gaming at its core to a vastly greater degree than a resolution bump. Several people in an attempt to downplay it have stated over the past few days they never bother with the UI once they are in the game. And that is true for a conventional UI but this engineering by Sony is anything but the norm. From the hints, to the completion cards, to the Friend's PIP it has to potential to alter how we game and the manner in which we spend our time in an ecosystem and do so at a far greater degree than mere resolution increases.

Sony has only scratched the surface but the framework is there for something that is going to define this generation long after resolution battles fade. As titles become ever more complicated this coming generation, the ability to hit 4K at an acceptable framerate will fade. Every time people have chosen to crow over resolution it has fallen short and this generation will be no different. Sony, while discussing it, is placing far less importance on 4K than MS and rightly so.

This UI however is not only sustainable but it will grow and expand in scope over the course of the generation and demonstrate itself to be truly forward thinking in the innovation department affecting gamers to a degree that it becomes a must have standard.

I was just pointing out how your post came across to me, I found it amusing but, completely on point. on to 4K, I agree as well. Frankly I am more impressed with Sony or a Developer optimizing and/or using a cleverly innovative or unique way of (optimizing resources) making games look and play amazing. and not something that is one off, something that is so innovative that it becomes a new standard of doing things across the industry. (and possibly bleeding into other industries) Sony really shines in this department.

morganfell2034d ago

@Yppupdam,

No issues :) I took it as simple observance and am well aware that sometimes when you are simply being honest it reads like PR.

You are spot on with regards with this bleeding into other industries. And it does demonstrate quite clearly that Sony was looking for a transmutation, a radical departure from a menu system that merely puts you into a game and you do not employ it again until you quit or answer a PM. This entire time no one was realizing how this was a wasted resource, an entire facet of the console was being wasted when it could be enhancing your game experience in such a positive manner.

i hate myself for typing this, but the UI is next gen. simple as that.

it doesnt rehash old things, it does new things perfectly, as shown in the video, amd thats what we expected, and more.

Yup, agreed. The saying, "if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it" is a massive cop out.

Sometimes you have to to start again with a clean slate. Approach a task as if it's never been tackled before and forget previous iterations. Focus on what the consumer wants/needs. Use today's technology to design a solution and only THEN compare and contrast against learning to date, before honing accordingly.

That's what this UI feels like to me. Bit cringe? Maybe lol, I'm just being honest!

gold_drake2035d ago

ur definitely right, i think change is not always good or necessary but damn, if u get it right, it feels like heaven haha, especially in the gaming community

I am absolute agreement Sully and swoosh shouldn't ferl the least bit odd for his honest analysis. I appreciate that years ago Sony looked at the entire ecosystem that was to become the PS5 and said we have two choices. We can do what we were doing and go twice as hard, or we can go back to the drawing board, rip the drawing board off of the wall and rethink things from the creation and design stage. This UI is a sleeping monster. Once gamers get their hands on it I think the cry will become to add to it and for all titles to support it as fully as possible.

IRetrouk2035d ago

Really happy with the way the ps5 and its systems are turning out, 19th can't come soon enough.

Hedstrom2035d ago

I like it. Cant wait to get my hands on it and try it out!

NEXUS-62035d ago

I thought they couldn't improve on the xmb - as I thought it was completely functional and clean.

Good thing I don't work at Sony.

The UX is outstanding on every level, simple and direct and let's you dig a little deeper if you want to.
