Xbox Series X Back-Compat Loading Times: SSDs and HDDs Compared

Richard Leadbetter of DigitalFoundry writes, "Xbox Series X backwards compatibility is shaping up to be an absolute home run based on our testing so far - yes, every title we've looked at so far seems to hit their performance target when 30fps or 60fps caps are in place, games using dynamic resolution scaling can show clear improvements, while we're looking at anything up to a 2x multiplier in GPU performance in games with unlocked frame-rates. On top of that, there's an image quality bonus too: texture filtering is improved via enforced 16x anisotropic filtering."

Im interested to see the comparison between BC loading on XSX and PS5 like most people here probably are. There should be a decent difference since BC games are relying on the raw speeds of the SSD's. External drives should have a decent difference too on PS5 due to XSX only having 2 USB 3.1(5Gbps) ports and the PS5 has 3 USB 3.2(10Gbps) ports. So most likely we will see faster loading times for BC games than we are seeing in this video.

How does series x run Arkham Knight? People can say what they want about power but there will be no 900p games running on ps5

Imortus_san2064d ago

But there are more optimized Xbox One X games then PS4 pro, so, pick your poison.

subzero19922064d ago

Watching the video Richard seems to indicate that the CPU decompression is the main factor in load times rather than usb transfer speed.

StoneyYoshi2064d ago

Yeah but the USB interface can only do so much when it's at a certain spec. The USB 3.1 that's on the Xbox can only output 5Gbps. The PS5 however has USB 3.2 which allows output up to 10Gbps. So the CPU will be a factor behind it but the rate at which the USB interface can handle will also be a factoring difference.

@imortus

Could you explain to me how MS is defining what BC games are optimized compared to the enhanced ones they are doing?

From my understanding they have a dedicated team that's upgrading a good amount but not all BC games and the rest run natively with higher resolutions and games with unlocked frame rates or performance modes will run it higher more stable frame rates.

This is how PS5 will be doing it. 100 select PS4 games will utilize the PS5's boost feature to allow the games to run a higher frame rates. Whereas the other thousands of PS4 games will just run as if they were running on a PS4 pro.

I'm not trying to create a big argument out of this. I just want to clearly understand how it works because I'm hearing different explanations from different people across the internet

@thelastrun

Ok understood, Thanks for that clear explanation! 😎

cfir2064d ago

Supposedly they'll all get HDR via microsoft magic, and some will run at higher resolution, but only some as patching is required. For the rest they'll hit their maximum designed e.g. if it had dynamic resolution, then it should stay at the max designed resolution, or if a 60 frame target, then it should maintain that constantly. It won't magic all games to 4K or 120fps

RpgSama2064d ago

Dude, don't say that, some people will get mad, you CANNOT ask about next-gen games for a Next-gen console!! /S

lonewolf102064d ago

"Isn't the Series X coming out in November 10th? What do you mean December?"

Yes but the OP just mentioned new games not ones on release of the console.................what do you have in mind as a comparison for the storage drives?

Bender65022064d ago

Or mention superior BC on a SeriesX, some people will get mad.
Within the first year or two of this Gen series X will likely equal or exceed the triple A output of the PS5, but the PS5 still won't have good BC.

Mr Logic2064d ago

Well the games aren't done and thus they're not released...

lonewolf102064d ago

We'll see in December with The Medium I suppose.

RpgSama2064d ago

Isn't the Series X coming out in November 10th? What do you mean December?

jairusmonillas2063d ago

That game doesn't even look next gen. lol

lonewolf102063d ago

@jairusmonillas

What has that got to do with drive speed? Lol

autobotdan2064d ago

How does Shadow Complex Remastered play on xbox series x

kingPoS2064d ago

My 4tb hdd, packed with PS4(X1) games is ready. When I get one in December, because I failed to nab a preorder, that hard drive's gonna be a permanent fixture, just like it is on my PS4pro(X1X).

I can't hardly wait for next gen.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio35d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing35d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9235d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit35d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing35d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9235d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
