NONE of this Sony negativity work in the long run. Yes they messed up a few things with save transfers and other things. Claims of not being consumer friendly and BLAH BLAH BLAH.

Ok then, so why did this Xbox preorders sell out just as fast? If this is true then it is highly irritating because I tried hard to get one and they would be artificially limiting stock to boost the appearance of increased demand and preventing actual paying customers from getting one. I'm telling you this, which ever one I can get first is the one I'm riding with for a while.

Kinda suspect. Or so says statistics 101... anyone who has taken a basic statistics course knows those numbers and samples are way too small to represent anything serious -- particularly if it was samples at a small number of retailers (or just one). The sample dates could even have a huge influence on such tiny numbers.

Also, humorously, 15% actually ordered a next gen console, but nearly twice as many (28%) _claimed_ they were "hardcore" and also did, in the survey. We're they worried their Facebook pals would find out somehow? The numbers are too small, which makes the variability too wild to be trustworthy

Also, as a comment points out below, both consoles sold out. So.. the retailer pre-determined the numbers of each that would be ordered. Kinda defeats the whole study.

That seems like a crazy large number. While I'm sure the PS5 is outpacing the Xbox, I'm not so sure its going to be a 72-28 split.

The biggest problem with xbox is "why buy an xbox"?. If you have a half decent PC you can play everything on xbox with out buying an xbox.

It was obvious Microsoft's game plan had failed when Series S's were sitting unsold a week after the pre-orders started.

I think that most people just aren't willing to shell out money for the new Xbox because Microsoft have been very clear that your old consoles will still work on top of not having anything that is a must buy thats exclusive on day one. I do think Microsoft will make up massive amounts of ground here though, as I see more and more PlayStation only buyers considering buying an Xbox later down the road or building a new PC, which is still in Microsoft's Ecosystem, which is really all Microsoft cares about. Mark my words, more people will buy Xbox's this generation than most think, they will just do it later down the road as Microsoft starts pumping out their exclusives from all the Dev Teams they purchased who are still working on their projects. Xbox will be more like a complimentary system for most (like switch this gen), for things like gamepass as well as other first party offerings that haven't even been revealed yet. I personally always buy both, so really no big deal to me. Xbox is for all my third party stuff, and PlayStation has always strictly been my exclusive machine.

The official PS5 teardown video on Youtube has 4.8 million views in 24 hours with 321k likes and 8.4k dislikes. We're talking about a video of a very nice Japanese VP of Mechanical Engineering disassembling a video game console. With subtitles. Not what you would normally expect for views on a technical video. Except, of course, the console was a PS5.
MS just cannot generate that type of interest. Hence, 72% looking for a PS5 sounds about right.

I’ve flip flopped a little- from only getting PS5/PC to getting an X first. Think I’m back to PS5 first now (even though my preorder failed). Essentially someone burning their hand is more than enough to change my mind to giving a hard pause on Xbox. Also it doesn’t hurt to wait for a version of the Xbox Series X that has a large USEABLE hard drive or real expansion slots.

Sullycigar I don't think RROD had any effect on Xbox 360 in the US with X360 outselling PS3 from Jan 2011 to Oct 2013, which was way after the rrod fiasco. Not having Peter Moore and the 360 team along with bad messaging killed Xbox's momentum especially in the markets they did well in. Xbox one still outsold ps3 in the US so fans are there.

correct me if i'm wrong, i think when xbox 360 dominated, people went with xbox one but that quickly changed and ps4 dominated and i think a lot of people are sticking it out with sony because of the quality of exclusives.
but there are many other reasons for sure, i hate subsciption based services so game pass isn't my thing, ive tried it many times.
there is also the fact that most of microsofts games are coming to everything almost...i'm happy knowing i can play the next fable on my pc and still 100% get bethesda games.

I've said before xbox put all there eggs in 1 basket in gamepass expecting everyone to rather pay a subscription fee, when in actual fact gamers just prefer proper AAA exclusives and pay for it.
When will xbox get it, we like AAA SP story driven games one after the other which only playstation provides.
Gamers don't care if they pay £15 for 90% of a shit library, that's why they didn't buy the game in the 1st place.

This is very surprising. I am a PlayStation guy and even I struggle to believe in the US market 3 out of 4 next-gen consoles pre-ordered are PS5. Not sure if the poor Xbox launch line up has something to do with it. Also worth considering whether the data is accurate

glad I got my ps5 disc preorder, still interested in picking up a xbox series x in the future. Not entirely sold on game pass. I set up a xbox account with game pass on PC and it was a nightmare to download or play anything. For instance master chief collection on PC is just a broken mess.

Microsoft has pulled an Apple in canalizing their own product with Xbox Game Pass. I, and arguably most other people, no longer have a real reason to purchase an Xbox unless they want their few exclusives on the big screen. Also, if somehow we get Game Pass fully working on say, and iPad or iPhone and could AirCast it to a TV - that really makes owning an Xbox pretty null for a fair amount of people.

Frankly, I've just been disapointed with what they have put out and their flagship IPs other than Forza, to me anyway, are no longer very good. Sony just has far more to choose from and it seems it is just all around so much more to offer.

The article is about a study (that is the author failed to link) and the title refer to 15% of the participant who got their pre-order approved and among that group, 72% got a PS5 vs Xbox.

Now just a reminder that all PS5 and Xbox series are sold out so again the title should be: 15% of our participants managed to secure a preorder from that group 72% managed to get a ps5.

I have little doubt Xbox will lose its home market again, but I doubt it’s this extensive. Maybe 55/60% market share in favour of PlayStation.

But this is a rather surprising result regardless.

This strikes me as pretty much meaningless. All pre-orders are sold out, so adoption of one platform over the other is limited by units available and I do not think think that disparity is 72:28. Moreover, the reasons that people buy a particular console at launch are not necessarily the same as the reasons behind a purchase the following year when there is a surplus of both consoles, so making any predictions from here is short-sighted.

If you have a good PC, there's pretty much no reason to buy a Series X and honestly, Microsoft doesn't care if you don't buy one because they ultimately want to make you become a games pass subscriber. That's their ultimate goal. To make you become addicted to their subscription like Amazon Prime and Netflix has. They want you to become dependent because in due time, they'll make back that money and if they can reach a future where they don't have to pour R&D and marketing into making another console and still get you hooked as a paying customer, then that's still a win in their book.
