Interview with SIE CEO Jim Ryan

Sony expects Playstation 5 sales to clear seven million units by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2021.

"We think the PS5 will sell more in its first fiscal year than it sold in the first fiscal year at the time of PS4 launch"

“We’ll excite fans around the world with the best exclusive games on the market today and deliver a truly next-generation device experience that will captivate them.”

Interesting interview. Jim kind of skipped over what type of effect PS5 will have on PS4 games through BC. Including VR. And didn't answer the question on if you can use the Dual Sense on PS4 games. Not that it matters to me. I want to use Dual Sense on PS5 games. Not PS4 games where no features are supported like my DS4 supports for PS4 games.

I think he also can't exactly answer those questions fully as it comes down to developers on pushing a patch or something to make their PS4 developed games look better on PS5 as well as using Dual Sense. Not everything can be brute forced. But I think it's the right decision to differentiate PS5 games with PS4 BC games. Unless a developer wants to go back, update and support new features.

As for $70 games, I think it's going to the big AAA games that hit that price most of the time. I doubt their smaller games they publish or some smaller VR games will be $70. If they all were, I'd wait for a sale anyway. $70 is an asking price. Not a mandatory or nothing price. Because I would just wait.

PS5 should hopefully have a great launch. We've seen the games and we have seen the system.(inside and out for those teardown gamers). It looks like a potentially good upgrade over current gen. Go get them sales Sony.

sprinterboy2049d ago

We already know dualsense doesn't work with ps4 games

northpaws2049d ago

I actually think dual sense would work for PS4 games but just can't connect to a PS4. consider they are giving everyone like 15 free PS4 games at the launch of PS5, it can't assume everyone has a DS4, some people might be new to ps or simply have sold the PS4 with controller prior to ps5 launch, the controller while greatly improved they basically have all the same buttons too, so it shouldn't be hard.

BrettAwesome2049d ago

No. We know dualshock4 doesn't work with PS5 games

Elda2049d ago

I think the dualsense is compatible with PS4 games played on the PS5,the dualsense isn't compatible with a PS4 console.

bouzebbal2049d ago

I'm still waiting for vita remote play to be confirmed on PS5, as well as pstv support..

outsider16242049d ago

I think it's the other way round. Ps4 controller will not work with PS5 games.

The Dualsense will work with Ps5 and Ps4 games.

CrimsonWing692049d ago

It’ll work for them on a PS5.

toddybad2049d ago

Only on an actual PS4. Of course it works with PS4 games being played on ps5, it's just they don't use things like haptic feedback because they didn't exist when the games were made.

The DualSense IS compatible with PS4 games.

Levii_922049d ago

They always seem to skip talking about BC .. i want more details Sony cause i will primarily play old games at launch i have no money to buy new ones right away.. too expensive to buy everything :(

bouzebbal2049d ago

No one really cares, they have next gen games enough to promote on their system.. BC is just nice to have, but it's going to work like on PS4 pro.. No need to talk too much about it.. Most of us have PS4 anyway and no need to talk last gen anymore

Levii_922049d ago

I care cause i have no extra 70$ for a new game right away that’s way too expensive given the console is 500$ so i would love to know more about ps5’s BC capabilities.

lukasmain2049d ago

It's ok. You will be able to play all your PS4 games on the PS5. The console also has a 'boost mode'. That being said, I'm sure there is still much information to come during hte rest of this month

The pre-order must be thru the roof for him to give such as substancial projection.

Nodoze2049d ago

This is all he keeps saying. Where are the US interviews? US hands on? US feature reviews? Updates on back compat, saves, PSVR?? Nowhere to be found.

Sorry but this guy just keeps repeating projected sales figures. A robot could do that.

Jim Ryan needs to go. He is in WAY over his head.

StoneyYoshi2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

Back compatibility has already been stated that 99% of ps4 games will be backwards compatible with ps5. Here is the link and the quoted statement.
https://www.gfinityesports....
"Yes, the PS5 WILL be backwards compatible - and with more games than we'd originally anticipated. In an interview with The Washington Post (and shared by IGN), SIE CEO and President Jim Ryan confirmed that "99 per cent" of the "thousands" PS4 games that they've tested will run on PS5."

US hands on? Geoff Keighly had a live stream showing the dual sense hands on for the first time while playing Astrobot. AND had an interview with a Sony rep in the same stream.

Saves have already been stated that it is up to the developer but so far the only issue we have seen this in relation to are for ps4 to ps5 upgrades. PS4 saves are expected to work when running the game in BC mode.

And PSVR has also been stated that it will be supported on the PS5. Here is a link and a quote.

“The current PS VR headset is compatible with the new console. We’ll have more product details to share as we get closer to launch,”
https://www.roadtovr.com/pl...

If you actually google searched you would find most of the questions you asked about. We are still a month out from launch so theres plenty of time for more information. I'd be more concerned as to why MS still hasn't shown off any next gen or even new cross-gen games playing on their system and people already have their hands on the systems for review. But like I said, theres a month left before launch for both so just be patient. We all waited this long, whats another month?

S2Killinit2048d ago

Not sure why you think that info has not already been divulged.

Mr_cheese2049d ago

Not sure how everyone else feels but all i want now is to see the UI and features.

Honestly exhausted with waiting for it to be shown and expecting a leak to reveal it all first.

jukins2049d ago

Lol exhausted? Why and how are you exhausted? Neither company has shown their ui. About a month away you've either pre ordered already, which means you really DIDNT need to see the ui, or if you didnt pre order youre not getting a console until after launch anyway so why the dramatic "exhaustion" over a ui? Lol

Mr_cheese2049d ago

Guess it is dramatic, but im entitled to my opinion as are we all.

I have got it pre ordered and really am looking forward to the UI reveal with the same enthusiasm as when we were all waiting for the console to be shown.

Funny how fast everyone jumps onto something when they don't like it.

jukins2049d ago

Lol no one jumped on anything im just calling out the dramatics. I've already pre ordered and would like to see the ui as well but if by some chance I could actually experience it myself first hand without having to avoid the internet then that would be equally as awesome. I'm just tired of everyone needing to know EVERTHING all the time. Because lets be honest once the ui is revealed then what? If anything id much rather see games being demonstrated and I have a feeling devs and pubs will soon be free or less restrained in what they can say and show.

Mr_cheese2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

Tired, exhausted. Same thing hahahahahaha

To gamers and enjoying gaming!

garos822048d ago

give it a break jukins. we all want to see everything these new toys have to offer. yes im interesting in seeing UI in action as well as everything else. I dont see why the delay when these things are out in just over a month

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 2048d ago
toddybad2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

I've got it on pre order and I feel quite differently. I actually don't want to see anything else. I've liked what I've seen so far and I want a surprise when I turn it on for the first time. There's far too much previewing in the games industry imo

Mr_cheese2048d ago

I never really thought about it from the perspective of it not being shown at all and being left for our own reveals.

Im warming to it!

DJStotty2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

"Sony expects Playstation 5 sales to clear seven million units by the end of its fiscal year on March 31, 2021."

This is not mentioned in the article, so do not know why it is in the title/description.

Nitrowolf22049d ago

it says he expects it to sell more than PS4 in the time frame, which was estimated to be 7 million consoles

DJStotty2049d ago

The quote is confusing though

"We think the PS5 will sell more in its first fiscal year than it sold in the first fiscal year at the time of PS4 launch"

May be just bad translation, but does he mean comparing to what the PS4 sold in its first fiscal year? Because it reads like what the PS5 sold at the time of the PS4 launch, which makes no sense lol.

CBaoth2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

you're right. SIE expects to sell nearly 10 million units by March. As a whole Sony projects PS5 to outperform PS4. Jim Ryan is referring to the Korean market with that quote and its potential success in a traditionally PC centric country. I imagine Sony is hoping they can replicate the success of the PS4 in Germany, in an Asian market. Anything north of 7 million isn't technically wrong, the reporter is simply attaching PS4's fiscal 2013 sales as a starting point in reference to Jim's statement.

DJStotty2049d ago

I think the 7 million is a worldwide figure as the PS4 was around 5.3 million by 8th Feb so 7 million by March 2014 would be a good estimate.

CBaoth2049d ago

remember though you're also talking about tax season. It's like second Xmas for these retailers. Entirely possible to sell 1-2 million from Feb. 8th to March 31st globally.

lukasmain2049d ago (Edited 2049d ago )

The PS4 sold 7 million units by the end of its first fiscal year. In order to beat that, it's obvious they will have to clear 7 million PS5 units sold in the PS5's first fiscal year. Straight logic. I don't understand what you're talking about.

Also, read the CREDIT URL that is posted up there. Maybe I shouldn't have put the credit article's title up there in the description, but it is completely accurate.

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

Kuma20d ago

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

Eonjay20d ago

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'? The internet has runied gamers. It doesn't matter how non-PC they make the game, you will all listen to the grifters telling you not to believe your lying eyes lol.

gigoran820d ago

"Rockstar Games’ co-founder and former VP of Development Jamie King said he envisions GTA 6 as a game that’s “maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny” as its satirical predecessors."

oh yeah, totally internet grifters spreading rumors...

blacktiger20d ago

That's part of the plan, they destroyed you but they need to destroy the shareholders? Only 1 shre holder is the true elite that don't care

1nsomniac20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

Meh.., if it’s above £55 I ain’t buying it.

Rockstar are genuinely not half the company they used to be. I was a die hard GTA fan I’ve purchased every game and expansion and spin off day 1.

My opinion of GTA6 is that I can take it or leave it. Not bothered. They burnt too many bridges.

DaReapa20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

So they're actually leaving the door open for an L.A. Noire sequel? Nice!

VaNdAl20d ago (Edited 20d ago )

He should just come out and say it already it's getting stupid it's going to be a 100 bucks $200 for the special edition🤡🤡; 29315;🤣♿

Storm2320d ago

I won't be getting this game until I can get it for $70. SHoot, I could wait for it to be even lower. I don't need the game that badly as my backlog is still huge and I am enjoying playing other things.

Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Eonjay21d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn222d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound, perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn221d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown22d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay21d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay21d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac21d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger22d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300022d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde22d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood22d ago (Edited 22d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde21d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
