ZeniMax's 'Orion,' and how it will boost Microsoft's Xbox cloud streaming

Microsoft shook the industry this week when it revealed its $7.5 billion acquisition of ZeniMax Media, which gives it the rights to legendary IP like The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, Fallout, and all of the talented studios known for making these epic, lasting experiences. One of the biggest criticisms of Xbox since practically forever has been the quality of its internal portfolio, which leaned incredibly heavily on Halo as its primary exclusive offering. With ZeniMax under its belt, that narrative is well and truly shattered — but there's another vastly important aspect to this acquisition that is being overlooked

I'm pretty sure ms already have tech similar or if not better then this. I hope Ms start licensing out Id Tech game engine to third party developers.

SierraGuy2076d ago (Edited 2076d ago )

Nope...orion is superior in every way.

Xcloud streams at 60fps but only 720p.

Orion allows 4K 60fps with less bandwidth.

Also if game steaming grows to a $15 billion industry like they're predicting...this is the main reason MS acquired Zenimax.

phoenixwing2076d ago

That might explain why they bought zenimax more than just to buy some studios which they could have done anywhere.

ArmrdChaos2076d ago

....and why they were willing to pay what they did.

NeoGamer2322076d ago

@ArmrdChaos
$7.5 bln for 8 studios is 937.5 million per studio.

That price isn't bad for good development studios. Mojang was way more expensive.

CBaoth2076d ago

@ Neogamer - you think almost paying a billion for each developer is a good price? That has to be some of the dumbest shit I've read here in a long time. Insomniac's $230 million deal is a good price to pay for a GOOD developer. Paying a billion for MachineGames and Wolfenstein: Youngblood is laughable.

Of course this wasn't done due to the devs. Owning the IP rights to ES and FO is great, but having a great 1st party engine and less reliance on Unreal is a huge factor. Seems like Orion could've played a big part in the acquisition too and where MS sees the biggest growth this gen. Thanks for the info Sierra Guy!

"games that will now be exclusive to Xbox platforms"

Yeah when was that confirmed? Or are you just making up your own bullshit?

sushimama2076d ago

"When Microsoft purchased ZeniMax this week, we were all blinded by the dazzling array of amazing games that will now be exclusive to Xbox platforms. There's another massive aspect of this package that is being a tad overlooked."

NOWHERE in the article was that said or written. This is made up LIES from the person that submitted the story. It reflects badly on WindowsCentral gaming website to have some blatantly lie like this.

Every single announced Bethesda game will not be exclusive to Xbox platforms. In the distant future, no one knows any different yet.

Extermin8or3_2076d ago

Ahhhh it makes alot more sense now this is the real reason why they purchased Zenimax media. Its also why they will let Bethesda still publish their own games in their own name....etc.

NeoGamer2322076d ago

You don't pay $7.5 bln for a few patents on game streaming.

phoenixwing2075d ago (Edited 2075d ago )

It's not just patents it's working code

Muzikguy2076d ago

"we were all blinded by the dazzling array of amazing games that will now be exclusive to Xbox platforms" 😂😂😂 no.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio32d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing32d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit32d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing32d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

To be fair, there are also human made games that release and lack any fun at all either.

jznrpg35d ago

But all of the great games have been made by humans

jwillj2k435d ago

One is by choice, the other is a feature.

PRIMORDUS35d ago

Guild Wars 2 been playing for 14yrs, 1st beta. This is just one company I support, Arenanet and NCSoft, even though I torrent, there are a few PC companies I will buy from. "PlayStation’s Horizon MMO spin-off, Horizon Steel Frontiers." I feel this will be good, NCSoft is a good developer/publisher.

CrimsonWing6934d ago

It’s a tool. Use it elevate things and get it done faster. I’m sorry but not every game made by humans is good. If this can help things, then I fully embrace it.
