PS5 is a surefire hit, but Sony's broken promises are eroding trust

The game's up.

I pre-ordered my PS5 but I have to admit Sony had the nerve for being misleading stating that the new Horizon can only be done on the PS5 & that basically the new games were PS5 only. The only PS5 console titles so far at launch are Demon Souls & Godfall.

BigBosss2087d ago

Spiderman: Miles Morales and Destruction All Stars

Tedakin2087d ago

Mile Morales is on PS4 too.

SyntheticForm2087d ago

That explains why Demon's Souls, imo, had that real, raw next-gen look and Miles Morales just didn't. Not saying it doesn't look great, but I was reeling from Demon's Souls and just 'happy' with Miles.

Lol.

bouzebbal2087d ago

Funny no one said horizon looked old gen when it was revealed.. It's built from ground up. Comparison pictures are there to show the gap.

Sonic-and-Crash2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

if i was Sony i would do the same thing....PS4 has 100milion users i would nt just let them hangin on edge or waiting to buy PS5 at launch ..its completely logical to release HZ2 cross gen

UltraNova2087d ago

Now that things are clearer I have to say Sony was misleading with all the "we believe in generations" talk when certain games will be cross-gen after all. That said, as long as they are putting the effort in and taking advantage of the PS5 hardware we'll be fine and from what I've seen so far it seems these games were not gimped in favor of the ps4.

Time will tell.

darthv722087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

I have a feeling more cross gen games are coming. If you notice, those three are from first party studios. Seems very similar to MS and their choice to make their games cross gen. So its possible that ones like GT7, GoW will also be cross gen. Esp since those are slated for next year (at least GoW is).

That is not a bad thing... its a great thing. Those who cant gat a ps5 can still play those big hit titles and know tbey will be even better when the do get a ps5. My son was really happy he can get the new spider man game on his ps4.

I just find it funny how peoples tone changes on this subject. They ragged on MS for doing this. And now that Sony is doing something similar now its okay because .... the userbase.

Im happy either way.

Unspoken2087d ago

$70 for PS5 games....hmm

fr0sty2086d ago (Edited 2086d ago )

Nobody cared and nobody said anything but "omfg!!!" when they saw these games, now they wanna throw out fake outrage about the games being held back by being cross gen, with no evidence to back it.

Some folks are just desperate for something to whine about. Here's a pacifier.

ClayRules20122087d ago

Yeah, got my PS5’s ordered too. However, Sony was misleading, no doubt. Godfall looks better than it originally did, based on the new trailer, I think. And Demon Souls...Gosh that looks really awesome! But definitely disappointed.

Saigon2087d ago

I don't understand how it was misleading when they have stated already that some features of the PS5 games won't be on the PS4 games? Maybe its a wait and see approach? But honestly I don't see this as misleading; maybe some do because at first Sony stated only for PS5 for these games. IDK, with the economy the way it is now, I think this was the right decision. However if we weren't going through these times, I assume there would have been a different approach. I also would think it being misleading if we weren't going through this world crisis and they pulled this.

BenRC012087d ago

Waiting till next summer. Might have some decent bc upgrade patches and sonys 1st party big hitters. Series x for early multiplats and bc, then trade it for a ps5 spec edition.

ClayRules20122087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

@Saigon - Sony stating how they believed in generations, leading many (not all of course) to believe their approach with the PS5 was solely PS5 exclusive. But also, their words stating it too about these games only being for PS5. I’m not gonna hate on you, I see what your saying, with the economy, the way it is now, this approach seems more appropriate to some and from a business standpoint, smart maybe, but I question that also, because now some also don’t feel the need to rush out and get the PS5 with both HFW and Spider-Man MM being available on the console they already currently own, which will save them money. I get what your saying, I hear you, fair points, but I still find it misleading nonsense. I’m calling Sony out on it, as others are, but I still love em, no hate, just not okay with how they went about this is all. But, I appreciate your reply, I genuinely do.

I’m disappointed, I’m not gonna lie, but again, with the state of the world we’re currently in, these games will provide gamers will some fun, be it on PS4/PS5, and they’ll be a blast no question. So, I do find happiness in knowing others will be gaming with stuff to come on PS4.

medman2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

@clayrules2012
I don't know why you got so many disagrees...I feel the same. Here is the quote from the article with the statement from Jim Ryan

One way to keep PS4 users engaged would be to make upcoming PS5 games playable on the older machine, just like Microsoft is proposing with its Xbox Series X games being playable on Xbox One. Yet Ryan says that's not something PlayStation is interested in doing.

"We have always said that we believe in generations. We believe that when you go to all the trouble of creating a next-gen console, that it should include features and benefits that the previous generation does not include. And that, in our view, people should make games that can make the most of those features.

"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5."

Not having ps5 exclusive games for the consoles first year or so would not have been an issue if Sony and Jim Ryan clearly had not stated that they believed in generations and that the ps5 would have exclusive games. But that's what they said, and at least for 2020 and 2021, that is not what they are delivering. Now, did Jim Ryan misunderstand a question he was asked? I don't know, but how they messed that messaging up I have no idea, because it's not as if games like God of War Ragnorok and Horizon Forbidden West just started development recently....they've been in heavy development for years. The situation is disappointing specifically because of Jim Ryan's previous statement. I don't know what happened there, but at his level and job title, it's not acceptable. Was it his mistake, or was this intentional? I really would like to know.

ClayRules20122087d ago

@medman

Thank you for sharing his quote, honestly. It’s all right there. Was it a mistake, or was it intentional? I’d really like to know as well. Because that’s not acceptable. With how long these games have been in development for, like you said, their shouldn’t have been that much of an error on Sony/Jim’s part, at least you’d think anyway. Again, much appreciated that you shared that. I remembered that.

crazyCoconuts2087d ago

I agree, I'm guessing they changed their mind later when looking at potential lost revenue - no point in lying when you know it'll come out like this. I'm a bit disappointed as well - i do think pushing certain boundaries requires you to remove some constraints in last gen. I just got done playing Days Gone, for example, and I'm certain they wouldn't have been able to get that horde with hundreds of NPCs swarming you working on, say, a PS3. In the same vain, the new Ratched & Clank is still a PS5 exclusive and obviously couldn't be ported to PS4. Oh well, knowing how Sony Studios push their hardware I'm sure we'll get some amazing games as the platform matures - they have a proven track record in that regard

Saigon2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

To be honest, I am looking at this as a business decision and not a gaming decision. If this pandemic did not happen, would Sony and MS keep the same approach? Honestly I only see one company keeping with this approach and that is MS. I doubt Sony would be making this pathway for us if this pandemic wasn't a thing.

The other thing is that it seems Sony thought this through. First they marketed this very well by making the Only For PS5 statements. Also it wasn't just a simple we are releasing it on both systems and you are stuck with with the copy if you buy the last gen version. They are allowing us to upgrade freely to the next gen version of the game when ever we get the system.

But I honestly do feel your frustration. I guess I am maturing as a gamer and don't really care anymore, lol.

ClayRules20122087d ago

@Saigon
Yeah, I can see this from a business decision on Sony’s part too. However, a poor business decision in the eyes of many, but also, many don’t see it that way, which I don’t hate on those who don’t see it as a non issue, especially you like yourself who explained yourself well and gave your opinion respectfully and said you’re looking at it as a business decision, not a gaming decision. It’s appreciated. I certainly see Microsoft staying with this approach too. Where as Sony, in the current pandemic, I get it. I don’t like it, but I get it. But😭😂Upgrading to the next gen version for free is nice on their part too.

I’m glad you feel/understand my frustration haha. At least genuinely understand and are willing to listen to what I’m saying. And yeah, maturing as a gamer, good on you buddy, honestly! Lol. I feel I have too. Lol. But I do care in terms of this. Either way tho, not the end of the world for me, and I’ll enjoy HFW & Spider-Man MM a great deal I’m sure😁

Forget the games, Sony dropped the ball on pre-orders.

They said AVAILABLE TOMORROW only for me to learn it’s sold out everywhere. SMFH. Ruined my whole hype for this thing.

SyntheticForm2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

Your problem is that you're still equipped to handle 'normal' when the world strayed from that long ago.

UnSelf2087d ago

My problem for trusting a company who clearly stated they were... u know what nvm.

I won’t be trusting them anymore.

Sitdown2087d ago

Did you see what Walmart's Twitter account said? Not sure if that can be put on Sony. Even if Sony were really to make retailers wait to a specific time it would just be even more chaos.

Harkins17212087d ago

Sonys website will handle them friday

SyntheticForm2087d ago

I hear ya man.

I just didn't expect it to go smoothly, and it didn't.

ClayRules20122087d ago

Sorry it ruined your hype for it, I really am.

It ignited my hype when it said AVAILABLE TOMORROW personally. But I also knew people would be trying hard to get them like mad as well. You either get it or you don’t, the reality of it. I just hoped and got lucky.

NecrumOddBoy2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

I got selected to buy one from Sony. Email came in in the middle of the night.

Online preorders suck because you are fighting scalping vultures

notachance2087d ago

it's not because of sony it's the retailers

UnSelf2087d ago

Congratulations, Necrum. Must be a great feeling. I doubt I get one of those emails even though I definitely registered.

I don’t ever get anything from Sony even though I participated in a focus test group for the PS4 when it was releasing

@unself
I feel your pain. I did a bit of drinking after the Sony conference, paid no attention to phone or emails, and later on that night I discovered retailers were offering pre-orders early, before the Sept. 17th date Sony mentioned on their website/twitter but didn't even bother to mention in their conference. I went online to several retailers and was shhhh outta luck at all of them. Went to bed, woke up around 2-230 am and decided to give it a shot. None of the retailers outside of Best Buy even had available options. Best Buy website was still having problems, but after several refreshes and broken pages I managed to order one....did it through paypal so the money was immediately withdrawn... secured the 499 model. Gamers should never have to work so hard to preorder a console they are willing to support.

Sony severely dropped the ball here, after stating that gamers would not be blindsided and gamers would have adequate notice of preorder information. The way it rolled out was just absolutely ridiculous, and people absolutely were in fact blindsided. I guess we all should have known this was going to be a complete clusterfluck when Sony starting giving out invitations for the right to sign up to be notified when they would give you the honor of preordering a console from them, but only if they deemed your account worthy. It smacks of ps3 arrogant Sony all over again. I hope this is not the case, but they have done themselves some damage to the good will they have built over the years since that ps3 debacle.

TheTony3162087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

well, i got one.

2087d ago
T2X2087d ago

Exactly. Funny all of the stupid "sign up here to be notified when it goes live" sites I was signed up to either never notified me or strangely notified me after they were sold out. Hopefully, they'll announce more.

ziggurcat2086d ago

It wasn't Sony who opened up pre-orders early - retailers flat-out ignored their Thursday date. Blame those retailers, and even yourself, for missing the boat.

Mr Marvel2086d ago

Somewhere in the world, it was already tomorrow.
I’m always careful with these statements due to time zones.
It was already tomorrow here in Australia, so after watching the conference I checked some online stores and sure enough, pre-orders were available.

Demon's Souls may be coming to PS4 too, going by what it said on the bottom at the end of the trailer. No way it's coming to Xbox, I just do not believe that. It's being made under the supervision of SIE Japan Studio, just like the original.

throne2087d ago

they confirmed next gen only yesterday

Grievous2087d ago

They never said anything like that though.

RauLeCreuset2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

People are going to run with the FUD. There have already been multiple users here falsely attributing comments to Jim Ryan based on a mischaracterization by The Verge of comments he made in an interview with another outlet. Somehow him saying they believe in generations and offering generation exclusive experiences got twisted into him saying Sony would would only make next gen exclusives. Some lack comprehension skills. Others are just throwing a fit because the PS4 with continued support is a threat to the Series S.

Elda2087d ago

Herman Hulst from GG which is the head of PS Worldwide Studios did state that things that are now implemented in the new Horizon can only be done on the PS5.

RauLeCreuset2087d ago

@Elda

Will you provide the actual quote and link for context? That is deserving of criticism if he stated there are things being done in the game that can only be done on PS5 that are also being done on the PS4 version.

DeadManMMX2087d ago

Demons Souls and Miles Morales is enough for me. Last time I was playing Killzone and Contrast. Some poor poor people were playing Knack. This is dynamite compared to that.

ClayRules20122087d ago

See, if Herman said that about the new Horizon, what exactly does that mean from a gameplay perspective? I mean, I’m picturing Aloy in the story being told to take to the skies “The Dino/Robo bird” in a cutscene but how do you change that up for the PS4, to keep everything consistent and what not. I mean, PS4 can’t handle flying in that game so....okay change this or that, it’s just my head spinning lol.

ClayRules20122087d ago

@BenRC01

I hope you enjoy the Series X buddy!

Ju2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

Ratchet & Clank - at least that uses the SSD to its fullest.

I don't really care. Great that they are, actually. Not throwing out my Pro because of the PS5. PS5 will get prime spot in the house but the Pro I will still use somewhere else. Glad I can play those games in different places - even I guess it'll be hard to go back to the PS4 once you play it on PS5.

Also, Deamon Souls. No freaking load times in those transitions. Yay!

And Miles Morales. That bridge destruction didn't look next gen to you? I agree it started out "bland" but then it really took off. I am curious how they will make this work in the PS4 version. All those games will be cut down severely for the PS4. Load times alone would justify the PS5 version (both HZ and Spiderman).

Marquinho2087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

And do NOT forget Pricing. Sony has given it the definitive kick to raise games to 70USD - 80Euro.

Taken from the Article:

"What happened to all Sony's guff about believing in generations? It was a load of old rubbish, it seems. Whether you believe in Microsoft's philosophy of launching its games across generations (I have concerns about the Xbox One holding games back, as I know some in the development community do), at least the company was honest about it."

"The suggestion at the time was that Sony's announced PS5 exclusives were just that - PS5 exclusives. Sony, we were led to believe, was taking a different approach to its rival, Microsoft, which had for months taken flak for its cross-gen strategy. Today, Ryan's quote comes across as a misleading statement designed to score a cheap PR win in the war with Microsoft. If Halo Infinite is hobbled by Xbox One, shouldn't we now express concern that Horizon: Forbidden West is hampered by PS4?"

"I'm finding it increasingly difficult to trust a word that comes out of the executives' mouths. Is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart a PS5 exclusive? Is Gran Turismo 7? Despite Sony's insistence that it is a PS5 exclusive, will Demon's Souls also come to "other platforms"?

"But the worst thing about all this is Sony's broken promise about PS5 pre-orders. In August, Sony said it wouldn't surprise-reveal PS5 pre-orders. "I think it's safe to say, we'll let you know when pre-orders will happen," PlayStation worldwide marketing head, Eric Lempel said.

"It's not going to happen with a minute's notice. We're going to at some point let you know when you can pre-order a PS5 so please don't feel like you have to go run and line up anywhere until you receive official notice on how that will work."

Last night, shortly after Sony's PS5 showcase ended, pre-orders opened up at select retailers, and fans scrambled to put their money down. Pre-orders literally went live before Sony made an official announcement that they were going live. That doesn't sound like a minute's notice to me."

Sony, we can handle the truth - even if it hurts."

Hikoran2087d ago

Do you kind of thinkers realise how much of a lower fidelity ps4 will have over ps5? In some cases it may even be the difference between 30fps and 60

medman2087d ago

Given that God of War came out in 2018 and we're getting Ragnorok in 2021, along with Horizon Forbidden West, I think it's fairly safe to assume the new God of War will be cross gen just as Horizon is. It's not ideally what I want, but I will play the hell out of both of those games and enjoy them anyway. I really don't understand how Sony got some of their marketing wrong though. They implicitly stated they believed in generations and that ps5 games would not be cross gen, but it appears that at least for games releasing in 2020 and 2021, that is not the case. Hard to understand how they screwed that up given how long games take to develop...they would have known all along they were being co-developed for ps4 and ps5

rayford152087d ago

Pardon my French but you can’t be this fucking retarded

ClayRules20122087d ago

@CrazyCoconuts

Well said! I do believe, without a doubt that the horde, for example, like you mentioned in Days Gone (Hope you enjoyed the game😁) wouldn’t have been possible with the hundreds of them, like 500 in total coming at you, it was accomplished because of the hardware in the PS4. Again tho, looking at the future of the PS5 and knowing as time goes by and it matures, and devs learn better ways to use its wizard like magic lol, really amazing things will be accomplished solely for exclusive games on PS5. And as you said, we still have R&C which is definitely not possible on PS4. So I’m grateful that’ll take advantage of the SSD the best way possible.

dlocsta2087d ago

I love all of the excuses I am reading about Sony being misleading is not a big deal but it is the cornerstone of the hate for Microsoft. Fanboy idiots don't even see the hypocrisy in this. LOL! Fucking pathetic.

Lore2087d ago

The article failed to realize/acknowledge that any game that is also coming to ps4 will be able to utilize the DS4 on the ps5.

Sophisticated_Chap2086d ago

Who cares if it's coming to PS4. If you want the better experience, you'll want the PS5 version. People are so stupid, getting upset about decisions that have absolutely no effect on them, and in this case, it's a very pro-consumer move, but people are so obsess about nonsense, that they think being pro-consumer is bad now....

McToasty20772085d ago

I’m surprised people didn’t think this would happen, Sony and Microsoft’s first party titles have got to cost tens if not in some cases hundreds of millions, and people think they would limit their userbase/sales to push hardware that is sold at a loss initially and aspires to break even?

An awful business strategy If ever I heard one

sasmanator2087d ago

I can maybe understand the disappointment. But it's like only 3 games that are cross-gen if I'm not mistaken? And I can understand Spiderman and Sackboy being cross-gen, I expected it to be honest. but I'm shocked about Horizon. But looking at it, they seem pretty awesome regardless. Doesn't look "held back" to me. I mean Spiderman looked incredible. Still really excited. Still waiting for pre-oders in my country.

Bobertt2087d ago

Kinda disappointed about horizon being on ps4 but if the gameplay is like the trailer i don't think its being held back. If anything the ps4 version might be stripped down like some of the PS3 cross gen games. I can't see a publisher like Guerilla who tries to push the graphics with Killzone Shadowfall and the first horizon suddenly trying to hold back the PS5 version.

RpgSama2087d ago

Horizon looks like what they did with Titanfall at the begining of this generation, the Xbox 360 version and the Xbox One were very differente from each other, hopefully that's the case with Horizon, I know I'll be playing Demon's Souls and then GoW in 2021!!!

Kratos_Kart20072087d ago

HERE► https://bit.ly/2zPpkEQ

pwnmaster30002087d ago

Naw, if you say a bold statement like can only be done of thenPS5, make sure you stick with it.

I get it, the game will sell millions and it would do fantastic on the PS4 but it does raise questions.

1. Will it effect the PS5 version
2. If it won’t effect it, does that mean PS4 will get a bad port like with the Witcher 3 on switch, where the game was to advance for the console.

Shane Kim2087d ago

Dude those are marketing words. Obviously they are not going to say "we can do it on everything, now go and buy our brand new console". Maybe the load times are 1 sec. Technically then you can't do it on ps4. Just because the gfx aren't leaps and bounds over doesn't mean they're wrong. You have to be careful with marketing words.

All games can be done on all systems if they just gimp them enough.

Sunny_D2087d ago

@shane

I wouldn’t say or call them marketing words when Jim Ryan straight up said games will be the boy developed on PS5 and that PS4 won’t be getting any more games. Now they said they will have cross gen games?

NeoGamer2322087d ago

People have to understand that this is a new reality.

The previous consoles are powerful, Developers may need to downgrade resolution and framerates, but the previous consoles are still very capable of running the current game engines.

In generation year 2+ the game engines will evolve to a point they cannot be delivered on the current generation of consoles. All Sony and Microsoft are doing here is being honest with their customers. People should not find this disappointing. This is a new norm recognizing reality of console technology. Generations are becoming more transitions and blurs then hard and fast generations.

TheKingKratos2087d ago

The only logic comment i read here

Outside the res and Fps those graphics can be done easily on ps4 pro

Sunny_D2087d ago

Sony was not honest though. Jim Ryan was the one saying they believe in generations and that games will not be on PS4 anymore. Only to find out right before release they have 3 cross gen games coming? I really hope GOW doesn’t end up being cross gen.

https://www.google.com/amp/...

This was a lie.

Sunny_D2087d ago

It’s going to be more about what they will have to hold back design wise for Horizon more than the graphics. GG said they couldn’t put flying mechs you can ride in Horizon 1 because of the PS4’s limitations. If this game is cross gen, then does that mean we won’t be getting flying mechs in Horizon Forbidden West? That’s the just one example of how cross gen games can be holding back next gen games.

RememberThe3572086d ago

Prettier PS3 games bro. That's what we're buying into.

To me 400 is worth no load times and the few exclusives (still waiting for sales, fk these prices). But both these companies have really done their best to show us why we shouldn't want their consoles.

Interesting, this article was making good points until he mentioned that it was an issue you could not use the DS4 controller on the PS5.

Anyone who has the DS4 knows that battery life for that thing is awful, why would anybody want to use that on a brand new piece of hardware?

I can only speak for myself here, but once a new console came out and whatever controller that system had, that’s the controller I would use.

It never even cross my mind to revert back to an old controller from a previous generation.

As far as HFW and Spiderman, I was getting those games on the PS5 anyway, so them releasing it on the PS4 is a non issue, unless you want to make it into one?

Oh well, I got mine preordered and can’t wait for it.

alb18992087d ago

I thought that Sony won't let the old controls play with ps5 games because they wanted for us the full experience....guess what, now it isn't even ps5 games...just one at launch and it is God Falls. Demos souls is a remake and will cost 70?
Also it will be released on 2021 but when?

I Just have several DS4 controllers and rotate them. Problem solved.

RazzerRedux2087d ago

The idiotic messaging left a bitter taste in my mouth after what was a kick ass show. And everyone scrambling to preorder the damn thing was just ridiculous. The worst thing was the utter confusion afterwards. Spider-Man and Horizon are no longer PS5 exclusives? Demon Souls is coming to PC? Oh...wait....no it isn't. FFXVI is "console exclusive".....oh wait...."timed". WTF, Sony?

2087d ago Replies(1)
phoenixwing2087d ago

Sony is usually very consistent with their messaging so it's really bad or noticeable when they aren't because it usually doesn't happen so egregiously. If I hadn't bought a gaming pc this year I would be totally angry with playstation and how they handled this pre order business. All this stuff with the pre orders made me glad I'm a pc gamer now and can enjoy next gen visuals without having to scramble for a console and feel left out.

blackblades2087d ago

Sounds like Trump politics confusion mix messages. Anyways they all been like that this entire year. If Horizon ws really built from ground up for ps5 then I doesnt matter if its on ps4 so so far its only a few Sony games. Then again horizon is cross then maybe GoW2 is as well considering they said 2021.

NeoGamer2322087d ago (Edited 2087d ago )

I can understand Demon Souls just being an error.

But, to hide that Spider-man MM, Horizon Forbidden West, and Sackboy's Adventure are also on PS4 is really BS marketing tactics. First, they let Microsoft take all the blame for it, Second, they weren't upfront with consumers.

I was going to wait on these consoles anyhow, but the presentation yesterday had me ready for a PS5 digital at launch. This additional info swung me back to waiting. And in fact, because MS took such an ass-kicking in press and forums on this I am considering a launch XB now even though there is really nothing new to drive me to buy it. Stupid reasoning I know... But, I want to reward companies that are being upfront with me.

Sunny_D2086d ago

I agree with you about the event but don’t buy an expensive product just cause you think companies are being honest lol. You won’t have anything to play if you weren’t already interested before. RauLeCreuset2087d ago

There should be a penalty for retailers jumping the gun, like having a sizable portion of their expected stock forfeited. That's probably just wishful thinking on my part, given the logistics and the potential for negative PR to blow back on the console manufacturer from angry customers whose preorders got cancelled as a result.

dumahim2087d ago

Maybe on future resupply, but cancelling existing orders is just asking to further piss off the customers.

RauLeCreuset2087d ago

@dumahim

Yup. That's why I said there would be negative PR blow back on the console manufacturer, but the thought of it applying to future stock, as you mention, did occur to me later.

fleshzombie2087d ago

Yeah its pretty bs, I signed up for notifications from Best Buy for preorder and was expecting it sometime today. I woke up at 5am to leave for work and noticed I received the email about pre-orders yesterday at 5:30pm.... of course they are all sold out already. I was planning on getting one at launch but looks like I may change my mind and wait. I have sizable Best Buy rewards saved up and am essentially getting it for no money. But considering most of the interesting launch titles will be on PS4 anyways, there is less incentive for me to scramble and pick one up day one if its going to be a scramble and hard to do.

Sony's Bluepoint Closure Should Concern Every PS Studios Fan

Sammy: "Sony disastrously and disgracefully shuttered Texas-based fan favourite Bluepoint yesterday. The long-time PS Studios partner never got a chance to ship a game under its new parent company.

This news hit me particularly hard because I believe it reflects the erosion of once-great PlayStation management that I think we’ve all been feeling for quite some time."

How was this allowed to happen? A studio know for excellent remakes and remasters were put on a GOW live service game? Something nobody wanted? There are so many other, more interesting projects, for me they were the prime studio who should have remastered or remade Bloodborne, what an absolute waste, I'm really annoyed about this.

Hulst should have followed Jim Ryan out the door, especially after his failed concord brainchild, execs really do only fail upwards.

Extermin8or3_105d ago

You say "no body wanted" but we don't actually know if the Devs were the ones to pitch it. For all we know

Elda105d ago

If that was the case you would have thought Sony would have told Bluepoint no & had them make the God Of War trilogy remake instead while having Santa Monica Studios concentrate on the next God Of War & what ever else they're working on. A Bloodborne remake/remaster would have definitely printed Sony millions. It seems the upper management doesn't care what the fans think including them making awful business decisions. To take Bluepoint under their wing for 5 years & dismantle them is crazy work, Sony should have auctioned Bluepoint off to to a company that could really use them.

-Foxtrot105d ago

If the really did pitch it then they would have wanted their own IP for being a brand new game, not using someone else’s IP when it’s not a remake this time.

CrashMania105d ago

I mean I guess, but doubt that a small team of 70 wanted to do a live service game, I don't buy it personally, but we'll never 100% know.

Scissorman105d ago (Edited 105d ago )

i think you are half right. sony became hyper-focused on live service games and given that, studios would then pitch live service games because those projects were the most likely to be greenlit by the higher ups. now, as for what the hell bluepoint was working on since their god of war game was cancelled is beyond me. it's just increasingly frustrating when sony just announced a god of remake which is still in its infancy when bluepoint could have been working on it for years and likely would have shipped it by now.

MDTunkown105d ago

We had a god of war mp in the past and it didn’t do well back then with less competition so doubtful people wanted a live service game especially from devs that made some top tier remakes

Michiel1989104d ago

Copium like this is the reason they're in this position. Sony could do no wrong and when something did go wrong, it's never the corporate suits at sony who are to blame.....its either: devs bad or ms/phil spencer bad while their own backyard is on fire. This is the result of not caring what your fav company does just because another company does (way) worse and automatically condoning everything. I hope they can turn it around without having to fuck over their customers more because especially some of the games on ps1 through ps3 were absolutely amazing.

Can't really say im surprised it's gotten to this point although I didn't expect them to close Bluepoint who has always delivered stellar work.

1nsomniac104d ago

The devs didn’t pitch it. It’s already been discussed publicly. They had literally just started on a new undisclosed project they were still in the initial ideas phase when they were asked to stop and do GoW instead.

Extermin8or3_93d ago

Love the downvotes considering it's since become public knowledge that yes bluepoint DID infact pitch the god of war game. They also eventually pitched a Bloodborne remake but from software torpedoed the project, sadly.

Everyone keeps asking for a Bloodborne remaster or remake — a game that genuinely deserves preservation and modernization. Instead, we got a remake of The Last of Us and then a remaster of The Last of Us Part II, both of which were already recent and widely available. That decision feels tone-deaf. It’s hard not to question priorities when so many legacy titles are untouched.

Bluepoint built its reputation on honoring PlayStation’s history. They were masters at remakes and remasters. There is an entire catalog — from PS1, PS2, and PS3 eras — that fans would celebrate. Yet instead of leveraging that strength, they were redirected toward live service ambitions. Six years later, there’s nothing to show, and now the studio is gone. That’s not just disappointing — it feels like wasted potential.

Sony Bend is another example. Days Gone 2 wasn’t greenlit, and the studio was reportedly shifted toward live service. Years later, that project was canceled, and they’re back at square one. That’s years of development time lost in a generation that already feels light on first-party output.

What’s even more concerning is the broader shift. PlayStation used to thrive on bold, risk-taking single-player projects and strong Japanese creative influence. Now the strategy appears more Western-focused and heavily driven by the live service model — where multiple failures are acceptable as long as one becomes a breakout success.

Competition used to push Sony to take creative risks. The PS3 vs. Xbox 360 era forced innovation. Today, Xbox has shifted direction, Nintendo operates independently in its own lane, and Sony doesn’t feel the same competitive pressure. Without that tension, the urgency to push boundaries seems diminished.

The frustration many fans feel isn’t just about one remake or one canceled project — it’s about a sense that PlayStation’s identity is drifting. And while loyalty is natural, defending every decision without criticism doesn’t help the platform grow.

It’s not anger because we hate PlayStation. It’s frustration because we care about what it used to represent

Relientk77105d ago

It does concern me that they think closing amazing studios like Bluepoint and Japan Studios is smart.

I'm honestly surprised Media Molecule is still around. They put out what 1 game in the past 10+ years? I personally wasn't interested in Dreams, so they have been a wash for me since the PS3 era. Are they working on a new game? What are they doing?

Stevonidas105d ago

I immediately recalled when they shut down Japan Studio. I don’t understand why any studio would agree to be acquired by Sony, EA, or Microsoft with their history of studio closures.

Reaper22_90d ago

Because of money. Most game studios need financial backing in order to develop games.

MrNinosan103d ago

MM is most likely next to close down, and my guess it's sooner than later

FTLmaster105d ago

Frustrating news, for sure. Hulst is on a major losing streak. Baffling decisions....

Lightning77105d ago

They could of let them do a Remakes of Sly, Jak and Daxter maybe the old Killzone games. Ported Demon Souls to other platforms. Steady revenue for growth becoming a 70 team to 100+ eventually.

toxic-inferno104d ago

Precisely! PlayStation have a rich back catalogue that is screaming out for a talented team like those at Bluepoint to work their magic upon.

Such wasted potential. And a terrible thing to happen to those talented workers at Bluepoint.

Demon's Souls remake was the gateway to FromSoft games for me. I'd fully beaten Bloodborne, but had struggled to get into Dark Souls. Demon's Souls - as a launch title - showed me how these games are meant to be played.

Miacosa105d ago

As a PS Fan and someone that looks to new exsperiences not rehashing old ones I can feel for the devs but it does not move the needle as far as getting new video games.

DarXyde200d ago

It feels more like them being bitter that no one supported it, but maybe it's me.

I'd appreciate them bringing back Warhawk—sadly I don't see that happening.

hombreacabado200d ago

hell yeah bring back warhawk. i thought helldivers 2 would fill that itch but not quite. that to me was the funnest online experience i ever had on playstation. last of us online was also a fun time but warhawk was quite cool made so many friends on that.

DarXyde199d ago

You and me both, mate. I'm totally a single player gamer through and through, but there was something about Warhawk that was absolutely captivating. Could play for hours.

Gamersunite880201d ago

Oh lord. This is hilarious. It's not Nintendo doing it this time. Lol

Lexreborn2201d ago

Did people really think they would let people potentially profit off of what THEY said was trash? It’s actually funny people even tried this

The Sony overlords these people worship

StormSnooper201d ago

You gotta admit it’s weird that anyone out there wants to play it considering we were told it was shit.

Fishy Fingers201d ago

Profit? Hosting community servers would cost the mod team money, not make it :/

StormSnooper201d ago

Yeah, now they like it? Make up your minds people.

jambola201d ago

The people who liked it like it
The people who didn't like it, didn't
They made up their minds, its just different people with different views, I can't believe i have to explain this

The overwhelming majority of people think its a dumpster 🔥. Even sony can make trash my man. I personally liked it but I also liked the last 2 medal of honors and people didn't like those either

Why Can’t Sony Make More Multiplayer Hits?

How the PlayStation maker lost—but still survived—gaming’s live-service struggle. The story about Sony's evolving strategy. Playing their strengths.

Christopher220d ago

Because they're bad at it and should stick to their strengths.

-Foxtrot220d ago

Also the market is super oversaturated these days. They’d have no chance unless it’s something that’s grown and nurtured over many years gaining a following, even then it wouldn’t be as big as COD, Fortnite and the like.

I still think if they refined the old school multiplayer “less is more” feeling that Uncharted 2s multiplayer had they could have done something with it these days but they made it too over the top and arcade like in U3 and U4 sadly.

Lightning77219d ago

They were doing it during the PS3 gen just fine though.

Christopher218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

No they weren't. CoD was steam rolling them back then and no one was competing with Halo. People just enjoyed the MP for a little while and moved on pretty quickly. None of them lasted like the competition. None of them.

blacktiger218d ago

Resistance and Killzone says hold my bullet

Christopher217d ago

Halo 2 - 8m+ sold
Halo 3 - 14m+ sold
Halo 4 - 10m sold
Killzone 2 - 2.6m sold
Resistance 2 - 3m sold

You can keep your bullets.

blacktiger217d ago

so now you are comparing lmao, and not to mention Halo is coming to PS5! lmao!!!!!!!

Travesty217d ago

Sale figures = great multiplayer experience
Got it..
Heard it first from here..

That’s the weakest argument. I played Halo and it was great obviously.
But so many different titles had really good online multiplayer.
Resistance Fall of Man. Was a solid title with fun multiplayer.
Killzone 2 was fun. Movement was slower but solid multiplayer.
Warhawk, probably my favorite. It was something different and had a very active community.

List goes on. But since sales = great multiplayer experiences than I don’t know what else to show you besides Call of Duty. 🤷🏼‍♂️

derek217d ago

@Christopher nonsense. Just because they weren't selling the most and/or had the most popular live service games doesn't mean they weren't making good games in the genre. Sony doesn't need to stick to any one type of genre, they have successful live service games in their portfolio. They need to get back to what worked during the ps3 gen so they stand out and stop chasing trends.

stupidusername217d ago

I'm happy we got Helldivers 2. But I believe Sonys biggest mistake was trying to force big single player studios to make multiplayer games based on big single player IPs. It just sounds like a bad idea from the get-go. Why did they need to force great studios like Insomniac, Guerilla, Bluepoint and Naughty Dog to make big live service multiplayer games?

Christopher217d ago (Edited 217d ago )

I think some people don't know what a multiplayer hit is. All of a sudden, number of people playing a game doesn't determine a hit? People need to be honest with reality here. If your competition is selling over 4x as many copies, you're not the hit game. And I didn't even include CoD in this.

MAG
KILLZONE
WARHAWK
SOCOM

all legendary series with very strong multiplayer

willo116217d ago

all great games. I feel the reason they keep failing is because they have abandoned pretty much most the franchises that made them who they are.

If they had made a new SOCOM, Killzone or MAG years ago they could have had a a strong set of multiplayer games but instead focused and making games like Concord that no one asked for a crowd that was never really there.

Yui_Suzumiya217d ago

MAG was pretty fun. Always wanted a sequel though.

Lightning77217d ago

Yeah they were. Killzone, Starhawk, Uncharted 2, 3 LBP2 resistance 3. Plus more.

Tapani217d ago

Because they are trying too hard.

dveio220d ago

They can.

But don't combine it with their strengths.

HD2 has identity. I don't think Concord had. And Marathon seemed lacking it, too.

Goodguy01219d ago (Edited 219d ago )

Dear god back when sony made highly underrated ones though. Socom, MAG, factions, uncharted 2 MP, resistance, warhawk, twisted metal, killzone 2+3....

I really wonder where they went wrong? The ps3 generation was amazing. It's just too bad cod and halo overtook the mp scene and these were all people played.

MIDGETonSTILTS17218d ago

Idk why MAG wasn’t bigger. And LoU mp was too good to not be expanded upon successfully. People STILL play it.

Kaizin514217d ago

Too early for its time. 256 players is cool and fun and has a lot of potential but it was hindered by the PS3 at the time, like many games were. Not saying it was bad, I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I just don't think the market was there for it. Bugs and stability were also a huge problem for it too, it felt like it lacked polish.

Sadly, it didn't do much to help Zipper Interactive. Instead of MAG, they should have put more resources and better ideas into making SOCOM 4 a proper SOCOM game instead of what we ended up getting. Sony has always had issues delivering on long form multiplayer series. Killzone was good, Resistance was good, SOCOM was great imo, but none of those titles lasted past their respective generations, especially when you have things like COD taking the reigns on the console shooter market.

I would have personally loved to have another SOCOM (and still do) but in my heart, I know Sony will never do it. COD has such a hold on what people "expect" out of a shooter on consoles that when something comes out, it will be compared to COD. Hell, even Battlefield 6 is the best BF game we have had in a long while (opinion, I know many will disagree) but it is still compared to COD in many many aspects.

Wish Sony would do more with many many series out there, but instead we get reboots, "remakes", and stuff like Concord which was just a tone deaf game to begin with, nobody wanted it.

Redgrave218d ago

They started trying to replicate fortnite money

Miraak82 218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

My favorite console gen , people tend to forget the SOE existed and had DCUO ,Everquest, SWG and Planetside . They were doing live service before live service was a thing . I played and was subbed to DCUO for like 5 years before SOE was sold off and the game kinda fell off for me , it was and is one of the funnest games I've ever played and experienced though , still always in the top downloads list on PSN . To say they're only good at single player games is silly as games like KZ , Warhawk and LittleBigPlanet had an active playerbase until they just killed the servers

jznrpg217d ago

I loved Everquest. Sony bought Verant after EQ launched and was already successful then resold it later but Somy did a good job while they owned it

Terry_B218d ago

There are thousands of good multiplayer games out there already.

Shadow Man218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

Sony could have struck gold if they never canceled the last of us 2 multiplayer, instead they wasted Billions of dollars on Concord.

Towers217d ago

I'm surprised with the downvotes. MP TLOU2 would have been amazing. The best part from TLOU2 was the combat and animation. An expanded version of the first MP would have been great. Unfortunately they got in the Destiny guys to look over it and then it got cancelled. Then put a lot of money into Concord...
