Best 2D, Mario World, best 3D, Mario 64. Can't say there's been a bad one, although Mario World 2 wasn't a true sequel. The Mario Land games were good (not the first one) and also Wario Land. I thought after Mario 64, Mario 3D World was excellent.

I do worry about this news though, because now I have to hope the hardware I have holds out.
Long time since they announced something on it.. One of my favorite handheld! Still running everyday.. We want a true successor with unique games, not ports like on switch. 3ds is a far better hardware in terms of value
If anyone has a VR headset I would recommend trying out the 3DS emulator with the 3D feature enabled. I tried it with my Oculus Go using Virtual Desktop and it worked surprisingly well. The only negative is the emulator is not optimized enough to get great performance in every game yet.
