about how well the PSP is fairing against the Nintendo handheld stranglehold.

The DS and PSP have quite different markets. They both have a market that overlaps both the systems but the rest of their market is quite different.

On one side you have the DS which atracts mostly (but not only) children of ages 6-12, adults who like to play quick easy games, older people who don't play games often.

On the other side you have the PSP, they atract the teen demograpic and young adults (ages 13-35). Also people who are more into extensive gaming. It's more of a multimedia device than only a gaming device, so you'll also see people that are not into games use the PSP for listening to music, watching movies or using it as a GPS.

Those are different markets, they need different strategies. But what you see is that both Sony and Nintendo trying to go in the middle with their strategies. Nintendo releasing DSi (more multimedia capabilties) and Sony going for more unique easygoing titles.

Whereas the other handhelds competed with Nintendo directly and lost, you can't really say the DS won from the PSP.

Anyway, I don't give a rats ass to who wins if people actually care for that. I'm in it for the entertainment, I like to have some interactive fun in my free time.

Not only that but the DS has a ton of RPGs (more than the 360, Wii, PSP or PS3) and some are pretty hardcore old-school stuff (Etryan Odissey 1&2 beying a good example). It's also becoming the console of excelence to play adventure games, something that is lacking on any of the other rivals. The styllus and two screens are just too atractive and excelent for both RPGs and Adventure gaming.

Babylonian, you're right. The PSP capitalizes on gamers that are traditionally PS console gamers. It focuses on games and properties that are recognized by more adult gamers. I have a DS Lite and I like it for what it is, but I have far more games for my PSP, like Star Ocean. Crisis Core on top of that and many PS RPGs like Breath of Fire 3. On top of those RPGs, there's Ratchet and Clank, and other properties that are only on PSP that can't be had on Nintendo's handhelds. Yes Nintendo has ruled the handheld roost for almost 20 years, but the PSP has a great market unto itself in us mature gamers. We that grew up on the original Gameboy, but moved onto the multimedia huge PSP. On top of all above, the PSP has magnificent multimedia capabilities, and can view widescreen video as well as it can play music. On top of that, it has built in Wi-Fi that can scan internet radio channels and scan the WWW for answers for games that you're stuck in.

Gameboy ruled the roost for over a decade but Sony's PSP is a great bargain, both for multimedia and games alike.

By having something that's actually unique. (like the wii) Touchscreen is a cool feature, as is dual-screening. Will it see off Apple? They're probably laughing at Apples attempts...

and it has the best games of any system, home consoles included. I can't wait for chrono trigger!

rekonizakilla6385d ago

The psp is doing just fine its got some great games like socom and liberty/vice city stories which look better than anything on the ds. Add that to the music, movie and web features makes your comment sound a little silly. Nintendo has a huge fan base and for psp to fair as well as it has against or along side the ds proves how good a device it is. There's enough room for more than one hand held games console.

yes...chrono trigger was a great game for the SNES in 1995. It was even better 4 years later when it was re-release on the PS 1 with anime cutscenes.

Or if you didn't want to buy it, you could have played it for free by downloading ROMS.
