Its not that Trophies suck its the fact that developers are extremely lazy and that is why Trophies aren't as good as they could be for right now.

The Trophy system is a much better rewards system then Achievements are, because you cant fake Trophies like you can Achievements(download game saves from the internet to give yourself Achievement points that you did not earn)

I really like the RPG style of Trophies compared to a very basic points value that Achievements give you.

If rumors are true to being able to receive special products or free downloads of stuff you would normally have to pay for, just for earning Trophies then there will be no reason to buy the 360 version of any multiplatform game. (unless PS3 get another Madden 07 or Orange Box)

But until Trophies are mandatory on all future games it will be partially handicapped. (Go January Go)

they level system might be very good if they add it in Home, like the higher your level is the more stuffs you get to access in Home. Its like a little RPG going on lol

I admit I like achievements more than trophies. I like it's all numerical and not just bronze, silver, gold etc. MS did get that part right with the Xbox 360. Now if only they can work on longer-lasting hardware :P

Also it's good to see Sony enforcing standard trophies in 2009. If they implement a trophy hall in Home, maybe they won't be as useless as most people think they are now.

You can download game saves from the internet to the PS3, but you cant cheat your way to a bunch of free Trophies like you can on the 360 with Achievements.

Trophies AND Achievements = Fail. Play the game, not the meta game.

achievements, like most of the 360, is brilliant for being first. after a while though unless your an achievement wh0re, and by wh0re i mean if we were still in the arcade days your all about getting top score on pac man. great

but i liked achievements. just wasnt a wh0re about it.

same can be said about trophies and once it goes mandatory.

when i compared scores on the 360, i just looked at scores but when i compared games there were some easy games that gave you points for turning on your 360.

with the ps3, its very similar but the level makes it different. i technically have more trophies than a few friends. but they have some silvers and golds where i may have some silvers and bronze trophies.. so one levels higher than the other.. very interesting way to look at it (and granted maybe confusing and overwhelming for most)

while playing motorstorm 2 (type of game i like to have to play some mindless racing) i haven't seen a trophie in a while, tonight i got a "starter something" trophie .... cool it came as a surprise.. since i forgot about it..

i havent checked but.. if it were a 360 game, i could say cool 10 more points

on ps3 i say closer to level, my percentage has changed.

i say enjoy both. they are great for gaming i just dont think you deserve credit for completing a level. maybe for getting past a peak moment in the story or completing the game but not for ending a chapter

this guy is an idiot,you need trophies for HOME to win items,demos,contents,etc..Like example,theres a room in HOME,says you need to be a level 5,to get to that level you need alot of trophies..Trophies leads to alot of free goodies,demo,games,etc.So yes,PS3 owners needs Trophies.

Trophies made me enjoy completing Uncharted for the second time. It was really fun to learn different ways to kill enemies in order to unlock Platinum. I guess I will focus on getting Platinum LBP soon.

It's up to developers to implement trophy support in their games. For me its not a factor in my decision to buy a game or not.

Trophies should've been there since day 1, like on 360. 360 gamers have been collecting points since the first day and games I played on PS3 last year and some this year don't do crap. Sure, it's just a number and little icon, however I enjoy collecting them.

I can remember when we played games because they were fun. Now apparently we need to be rewarded or its not worth playing.

I dont really care about trophies, sure its mildly pleasing when one pops up, but I dont think I've even gone through and looked at what I have or still have to get. Its just not important to me. Now if they tickled your balls with a feather everytime you got one........

The only reason Microsoft and Sony included trophies and achievements is to boost game sales of mediocre titles. They know and the developers know that there is a group of people out there that are trophy whores and will buy games solely for the reason to get the trophies out of this. They even make trophies easy to obtain in mediocre titles...anyone remember how easy it was to get all the achievements in Avatar for the Xbox?

I prefer achievements that are handled within a game, especially those that actually unlock content.

The way Uncharted handled trophies was very nice. In Valkyria Chronicles (great game btw) I like how you can receive weaponry and medals depending on how you handled various missions. Even something Like unlocking various weapons/items in Metal Gear or how they handled rewarding you a rank.

Some numerical value or word popping up on my screen does nothing to enhance my game experience. I couldn't care any less about a gamer score, the thing just stands to show the world how much time you wasted jumping through developer designed meaningless loops to try to make you imagine their game had replay value, or a longer campaign just because of a single line of code.

I own both systems but for some reason I care more about earning trophies rather than achievements and I don't know why

with this article. Trophies play a big part in my gaming habit. For instants, i bought fallout 3 and Farcry 2 on their release days. Now that a guess which one i am currently playing. Thats right. I started to play fallout, but the very next day after i bought it, an article was released saying that fallout will be patched with trophy support, so i stopped playing.

They do what there supposed to be doing and maybe a cash value in home ? My 14,020 gamerscore from MS with my 360 hasnt bought me sh!t but three RRoD 360's...

I (epic) fail to see the problem. It even says in the article how they are becoming mandatory in 09 anyway so it won't be a problem then. at the moment i buy games because i want to play them (obv), the game having trophies is just a nice bounus and something to keep you playing more than you might have done but as discussed all new games from 09 are going to have them anyway.

I actually like the trophy system more and it really wouldn't surprise me if they update the GS at some point. I have 5,500ish GS but unless someone looks through every game and achievment they won't know if i have that score from playing and completing 5 and a half games, getting easy achievements on loads of games etc. But if someone has a quick glance at my ps3 trophies they know how many easy (bronze) i've got, intermediate (silver) and hard (gold) trophies i've achieved and can also see how many games i've got 100% on.

Thats my opinion on the matter anyway.

I can't comment on whether or not I prefer the Trophy System over the 360's Achievement/Gamerscore system because I don't have a 360 and haven't experienced their system so it'd be wrong to say 1 is better than the other I feel.

However what I will say is that I do like trophies, when one pops up I'm like "ooohhh nice" like I'm sure many 360 gamers do when they see an achievement pop up on their screen.

I think the Trophy system is pretty sweet though and the only reason it isn;t that great right now is because it isn't in every single game. I lopve my PS3 but the late inclusion of a feature like this is probably one of the mistakes they made this gen. Thankfully though they have been listening and are making up for those mistakes (better late than never imo).

Looking forward to every single game coming out having a trophy system in it as there are quite a few games I've traded in because I find no replay value in them due to no trophy inclusion. also looking forward to them being integrated into home as there is a lot of potential there imo.

I think its jsut the way you worded it though :p but yeh they should have been in from the start. that way every game could have had them from the start obv but theres still plenty of years left in this generation of consoles so in a years time unless you're still playing ps3 launch titles there shouldn't be a problem :)

Why aren't you guys displaying it in your profiles? Also in achievements you get to see what any person has achieved also the GS is easier to keep track of. You get 1000 points max for retail games and 200 points for XBlive games. Than 200-250 for additional DLC.

If you see high gamer score you'll atleast know he's played quite a few games and would be curious to compare with that person. YOu can do comparison of games on your pc, on xbox360, while in game etc. Trophies have no meaning or value. Whats the difference between silver/bronze/gold. Whats does level 6 means? How many trophies per game do you get etc. Its really a lame way of representing achievements and is definately half baked tacked on feature after 1 1/2 years of console's life.

although some of your points make sence to me i don't really get others. you say its easy to see what someone has achieved e.g 1000 gamer point for completing all achievements in a game but then at a glance someone has 1000 points. does that mean they have 500 on 2 games, completed 1, played loads and got a few on each. - a ps3 platinum means they have all trophies for a game i.e. someone with 2 platinums u instantly know they have completed 2 games.

and you mention whats the difference between broze, silver and gold. I would have thought thats obvious. someone with alot of bronze have completed lots of easy achievements, someone with silver have achieved the more challenging trophies and someone with gold have achieved the hardest (and some r really really hard) and depending on the difficulty gives u a certain amount of points 2 ur next level.

It would be nice to be able to compare online like u can with 360 but i think in time this will come. (like everything on ps3 haha but it gets there eventually)

I don't know a single person who would pick up a mediocre game instead of a 'gem' just for trophies. I'd like the author to give a few examples of what his 'peepers' have seen. Is he really suggesting a game that is worth 7/10 (not a bad score by any means) would normally be skipped over if it didn't have Trophies.

To be honest, with the current state of play with Trophies I have little or no idea which games do/don't have Trophies in - so it has zero impact on my purchasing decisions. It's not like I am going to buy Ferrari Challenge over Race Driver, for example, because one has support and the other not - I'll always buy the game that appeals the most.

Personally I prefer Trophies over Achievements. I prefer the Level idea rather than a Gamerscore - but really it doesn't matter much.

But what I really like is the count of Plat, Gold, Silver, Bronze Trophies.

Anyone can pick up a game like King Kong on 360 and earn 1000 points. Having some context is much better. If I earn a Gold Trophy it means much more - not in the grand scheme of things obviously, but as a momentary feeling of reward it is much more effective than a message like 'You have earned 120 points'

As a comparison to friends that extra context is nice... Two friends could have a similar level, but one has been whoring Bronze Trophies, while the other has less Trophies, but more Gold/Plat.

Gamerscore has always struck me as nothing more than a reflection of how many games a person has played rather than singling the person out as a proficient/expert gamer. Trophies is a much better system in this respect.

i think it's good for ps3 users to have something similar to 360's gamerscore.

I don't know if it has been made clear. The gamercore is one thing.

But is the achievements are the prestigious thing. Look at the seriously 2.0 in Gears 2 where you earned on a few point for you gamer score, but the achievement shows you have killed 100,000 horde. Some achievements don't even add to the gamerscore.

So yes, some can have a super gamer score, but have they actually achieved anything or just play games like avatar where you can gain 1000 points in less than 3 minutes

this is the main reason why people are still buying xbox 360's, because sites and people like these brainwashes people to think xbox 360 is the best and greatest console ever, but it is actually the worst console among the three, for several reason, 30% failure rate, yearly online fees, no hdd for some and if you want to buy one its too expensive. the only good thing going for it is it has fair amount of good games. good games that you can't play because of the failure rate.
as a happy and satisfied owner of ps3 i love trophies and it's integrated future with home, which will enable trophies to be turned into cash to buy stuff in home like clothes, furniture, gadgets and etc. so i'm very excited with the possibilities that trophies hold for us ps3 owners, very happy indeed.

Because this wasn't there from the get go, it's a bit half @$$ed do to back pedaling. I want my home decked out in trophies when home finally drops and my place won't have as many cause I beat Resistance 1, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, etc.. and am not going back just to get them any time soon. Would've been nice to have long ago. Now I want my own in-game music which they are also "working on". No sugar coating it in Sony's favor... they are late to the party in quite a few aspects. But MS's games are going to be facing the wrath of the Blu-ray drive when Sonys games start to pull away, which MS can only truely answer to... by dropping the next box! cause to think you will get graphics like KZ2 and Heavy Rain just to name a few, on 360... you are greatly mistaken!

Ya I am. Most of the games I play now all have trophies. I refuse to play SOCOM because it didn't have trophies at release (and because of the bugs, lol). I bought Fallout on Xbox because it didn't have trophies. It must be mandatory that trophies be included. No excuses anymore. I am disappointed that games like CoD4 didn't add them (probably to force people to stop playing to buy the new CoD). Oh well.

Trophies have the potential to be as good as achievements, if not better, they just need to streamline the whole process, and viewing profiles while they're at it. You shouldn't need to sync a trophy, it should work like 360 achievements.

I realize that trophies are a copy of achievements but so what?...it's a good idea. I like achievements and I am really glad that Sony implemented them on the PS3. The fact that they are going to be mandatory after January 2009 was a very smart move by Sony. I really enjoyed playing through Uncharted again after the trophy update. It does add a certain something to playing through a game.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
