Sony Hands Xbox an Advantage by Requiring DualSense Controllers for PS5 Games

Sony revealed that the DualShock 4 and other third-party PS4 controllers won't be compatible with PS5 games, and that sucks.

Sonic-and-Crash1975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

how it is an advantage ?? , the damn controller is provided along with the console ...if you want to play PS5 games, you just play them ...just that simple ...they say it is a disandvantage like Sony left their console without controller and must buy new one , .......lame opinions.. whatever

ThinkThink1975d ago

I can only see this as an advantage for parents that aren't sure what they want. The store clerk would ask if they want some extra controllers to go with their ps5 and the parent might say, nah we have a bunch at home at which point they would get the bad news, especially if the controllers are more than $70 each. So that extra $150-200 that they weren't planning on. That could be enough for parents to look at a Lockhart instead. Idk, will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

badz1491975d ago

IGN is MS's shill confirmed!

morganfell1975d ago

The title should read as follows:

"The Dual Sense Controller Hands Sony An Advantage"

bouzebbal1975d ago

Bummer, but talk about an advantage..

darthv721975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

Do we even know if third parties are going to be privy to the same haptic tech in their controllers that sony is using? Usually a 3rd party has to be allowed the right by the parent company to even make a compatible controller. Scuff, for example, has their own spin on the DS4 that comes at a premium price. So will they be making a DS5 controller with all the bells and whistles plus their own premium additions?

If not then i can see why some would be upset at Sony for not allowing DS4 to be used in place of a DS5. but it really depends on the game. Id say for the majority of games on the PS5, a DS4 would still likely work. And my reasoning is that 3rd party games tend to make up the lions share of any platforms library.

Sony will make use of the DS5 features while pretty much all 3rd party will be relegated to the basics because of cross development with the likes of PC/Switch/SX. It reminds me of the days when i could use a DS1 controller on the PS2 but obviously for the basics since it lacked the pressure sensitive buttons. I could also use the DS2 on the PS1 if i wanted to so Sony will more than likely make the DS5 work on the PS4 as well.

Patrick21975d ago

Yeah, I keep hearing this, but its total bs. We ALWAYS get a new controller with a NEW system.
It give MS no advantage. Its just fan boy pipe dreams.

Babadook71975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

The bigger advantage will be ‘which controller has more innovation?’. I suspect the controller that literally makes the past gen obsolete is the more innovative one. Advantage PS5.

And I think if Sony allows DS4 you will naturally realize the immersion is greatly diminished. And the clincher is, certain games will simply count on the new feedback. And missing that would break features.

DarkZane1975d ago

@Babadook7 Pretty sure the PS5 is the one that innovate the most since the Xbox Series X controller is literally the same as the Xbox One controller and doesn't offer anything new.

RememberThe3571975d ago

Totally agree. I do need a back button adaptor though. Now that I have one for DS4 I need one on the DuelSense. I don't if they out out a $200 pro controller I'll buy it. God damn it give me my back buttons!

Michiel19891975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

@sonic so that if I want to play with my friends at launch for lets say party games or something that doesnt use dualsense, that i dont need to buy 4 controllers right away at launch and can just use my ps4 controllers.

edit: it not like this is a major advantage over xbox or something, its kinda negligable, but i would still prefer if ps4 controllers would work on ps5 and buy some different colour ones later on.

1975d ago
TallDarknWavy1975d ago

Never in gaming history has a Playstation controller been able to be used on next gen games. This is just grasping at straws, whining and if anything shows Xbox isn't innovating with their controllers since next gen can easily be used with previous gen controllers, no new features.

fr0sty1975d ago

Sony made the controller with specific gameplay enhancing and altering advantages, of course they are going to require it for the games made to support it.

CaptainHenry9161975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

Can you play PS4 games using the PS5 controller?

xTonyMontana1974d ago

Agreed, I expected better from someone like IGN. If that is handing Microsoft an advantage, what is Microsoft handing Sony by delaying their flagship title until next year?

RedDevils1974d ago

Do people use their PS3 controller to play on their brand new PS4 too?

raiden_1881974d ago (Edited 1974d ago )

As you said new consoles come with new controllers to play the next generation of games. The only disadvantage is having to buy another ps5 controller to play with your friends or family instead of being able to use an old PS4 one.

This bit on the article is laughable " it sucks that PS4 players moving to PS5 will have to abandon their current controllers in order to play new games".

DJStotty1974d ago

I think it is more garnered towards if you want to play couch co-op with a friend, you need to buy a dualsense pad.

Whereas with xbox you can use your old controllers.

DJStotty1974d ago (Edited 1974d ago )

And some people would have paid a fortune for a pad and would like the option to be able to take that to the new console, most if not all 3rd party developers will not utilise the new pad features.

DogJosha1974d ago

@TallDarknWavy Was this sarcasm or are you just making incorrect assumptions for no reason? I used my DS1 on my PS2 and my Ds2 on my PS3. You needed an adapter for the DS2 controller but it still worked. PS4 was the first Sony console to completely drop previous controllers.

gamer91974d ago

How is DJStotty being downvoted for stating simple facts? Certainly this doesn't give xbox a big "advantage", but come on - more options are better if you have multiple gamers in your house, or need a back-up controller in a pinch, or you like a different style of 3rd party controller.

wolf5811974d ago

Exactly....every generation comes with new features and controllers..for years now..every generation we waiting to see something new and innovative in the way we playing our games...just like Nintendo..or sega back in 90s....the lame goes for the uninspired...and for I m playing the same games with the same way ...plus you can use the dualshock ps4 controller for your old games if y want....

darthv721974d ago

@TallDark... not true. The PS2 could use the PS1 controller for the bulk of its games. Not every game used the pressure sensitive face buttons of the DS2 so you could use a DS1 if you had to.

I read the title 😩saw the source 🤦🏿 Though can’t write ignorant without IGN 🤷🏿‍♂️

RpgSama1975d ago

The next thing they are going to start complaining is why can't we have Cross-Platform hardware, Lol

"I'm SPOILED and I want everything and I want it now!! Why can't I use my Xbox 360 controller on my PlayStation 5?!!! ANTI-CONSUMER!!!!!"

Nothing surprises me anymore.

VenomUK1975d ago

The DualSense has technical features that are innovative and could help gameplay immersion (how good it is in practice we have to wait and see). However on the day that Sony begin to advertise this feature IGN then write a piece criticising it to make it seem like a negative, which is the sort of thing you would expect from a Xbox fan-blog not a supposedly professional video game website.

The reality is that Sony have made a brand new controller and the people who buy a PlayStation 5 at launch are going to want to experience this new hardware.

nowitzki20041974d ago

I have not been on IGN in about 3 years, in 2000s they were my go to source, but they totally fell off, with reviews and everything

NeoGamer2321975d ago

Agreed.

No one is going to say, "I am not going to buy a PS5 because it doesn't use my old controllers".

That is just dumb. Especially when every PS5 sold will include a controller.

UltraNova1974d ago

More importantly, no one is going to say I will buy an Xbox because I can't use my DS4 on the ps5. IGN is grasping at straws here.

TheScotsman1975d ago

It's not like you don't get one with console, and maybe if it was just a rehash controller with nothing new to offer like somebody else we could mention , I could see why it may be a problem but it's not it's new and unique. So of course you'll need it to play ps5 games....

gravedigger1975d ago

Yep. Why i would use old controllers on next-gen console. I want something new to experience. I will gladly accept new gamepad features.

Muzikguy1975d ago

Definitely lame. We get controllers with every new system. This is such a stupid thing to complain about

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen1974d ago

DualShock 3 didn't work with PS4, did Xbox have an advantage this gen? Some people want to focus on anything and everything to compare these consoles except the one thing that matters...

I like it most third party controllers are garbage feel like garbage and break quickly and you have to jump through hoops to get warranty. I always go oem controllers if I bought couple of consoles off of Ebay and it comes with a third party controllers I always chuck the controller in the garbage.

Father__Merrin1975d ago

I don't know but more expensive PDP controller are amazing I've a wired PDP prism pad everything about it feels better than a Xbox pad imo

1975d ago
iQuasar1975d ago

I am sure it will eventually extend to ONLY "officially PS5 licensed products," meaning royalties and quality control on Sony's part.

1974d ago
isarai1975d ago

You mean like just about every generation ever? which has bothered literally no one? Being able to use Wii controllers sure as hell didn't help the Wii U, so not sure how this is going to equate to anything.

blackblades1975d ago

People been jumping on Sony every chance they can get.

Atticus_finch1975d ago

Haters nitpick because Sony is all greatness.

Profchaos1975d ago

Big outlets like IGN and DF have always been suspected of being in Ms payroll they always embrace the new Ms console suspicious articles like this always come out

L7CHAPEL1975d ago

bro, it's just a bullshit clickbait article. take a look at how many comments are in this thread, and you'll see why they worded it the way they did. more clicks is more money for them and that's what this is all about.

ThinkThink1975d ago

different times now. I hear you though

badz1491975d ago

different times? why? because MS said so?

alb18991975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

Badz149 is it bad that MS gives choice to you?
Some of us have buy expensives controls so this is a really good news that they will be compatible with the SX.
Different times because there is so much expensive controls this days and isn't fair that after you buy a 250 control, it won't be compatible.

RauLeCreuset1975d ago

@alb1899

How is it not fair? You can keep playing those PS4 games, on a PS5 even, using that same expensive controller you bought to play PS4 games. You aren't new to how consoles work. You knew the deal when you bought the controller. Consoles push generational innovation. Suddenly it "isn't fair" now that MS has had three generations to see the writing on the wall and wants to shift their platform away from the console model.

ThinkThink1975d ago

I just meant that allot of people are out of work right now and money can be tight. Covid has given us reasons to remain indoors with what we have but not really given us the disposable income we are perhaps used to. I'm just speaking for me. Not trying to make this a MS vs Sony thing.

isarai1975d ago

@ThinThink

Fair point, but if you're going to have $500-$600+tax plus an additional $60-$70+ tax for a game with it, logically you should have the means to buy another controller aswell. Plus everyone keeps saying "not fair" as if it doesn't already come with a controller.

gerbintosh1975d ago (Edited 1975d ago )

@alb1899

When MS isn't innovating it is very easy to bring previous iterations of hardware and software to something new.

MS: No Xbox Series X games exclusive at launch, so play all your old games
MS: No new controller innovation, so use your controller from the previous generation.

MS console owners eat this up like MS is doing you a favor when in reality they are posturing and shifting the goal posts in order not to lose profits.

What, you don't remember how integral it was being able to use your N64 controllers with the Gamecube? Or to use your 360 Kinect with the Xbox One?

Chaos_Order1975d ago

Exactly my thoughts. New controllers for a new console has been standard practice for decades. Now that Sony wants to make improvements to their controller, all of a sudden it's a terrible thing and Sony are going to crash and burn.

rainslacker1975d ago

I'd expect better than this from IGN.

This has never once been an issue at any time ever in the history of game consoles. Why is it suddenly an advantage or a criticism now? Being able to use your old stuff is great, but it doesn't matter in the larger picture.

1975d ago Replies(3)
RauLeCreuset1975d ago

This really is some shameless, small blog stuff.

averagejoe261975d ago

I agree. I thought this was going to be some no name website then I was shocked to see IGN.

crazyCoconuts1975d ago

If you want to keep playing your games the same way you've been playing them before, spend $500 on this new console. For consumers that think that sounds like a good value proposition, Xbox has the advantage. In my world, the company that hasn't added features is at a disadvantage. Sony's first ad is already capitalizing on that differentiation.

Bennibop1975d ago

Ign are obviously struggling this is just click bait

L7CHAPEL1975d ago

again, everybody should calm down with one another.
this article is in based on MS or Sony saying one damn thing.
the whole purpose from the article is to get people arguing the way that they are over this, and get as many people on this thread as possible. 🤑

rainslacker1974d ago

I'm calm. I just wouldn't expect this kind of click bait from IGN. They aren't perfect, but they don't often resort to this kind of nonsense.

I've also seen this topic discussed so it's not like it's not an actual topic that was brought up. So I stand by my it's never been an issue before, and overall it's getting kind of tiresome seeing all these things that were never issues before, suddenly becoming criticism against Sony because MS decides to do something. it's particularly jarring when Sony has the same features that MS is promoting, but that's a whole other topic.

Sony Remade Demon’s Souls, So Why Won’t It Touch Bloodborne?

The Outerhaven writes: Bloodborne is still one of PlayStation’s most beloved exclusives, but it remains trapped on PS4. Meanwhile Demon’s Souls got a full PS5 remake. But why?

theouterhaven.net
thorstein15h ago

Demon's Souls was a PS3 game.

Bloodborne is PS4 and can be played on a PS5.

There's no need for a remaster.

Relientk7712h ago

I completely agree with you on this. If you want remasters or remakes give us games from the PS1 or PS2 era like Legend of Dragoon.

Eonjay6h ago

I would say thats a personal oponion trying to be passed off as a law. Truth is thre are many people who would love a remaster.upgrade so they can play Bloodborne at 60 FPS. People would literally love that.

shadowhaxor8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

I mentioned that in my article, did you read it? I literally pointed out this is exactly why the game is still doing well, and why Sony has zero reason to remake/remaster it.

And there are plenty of PS4 to PS5 remaster/remakes, to counterpoint that.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
GTA V Expanded & Enhanced
Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut
Control: Ultimate Edition
Death Stranding Director’s Cut
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade
Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection
The Last of Us Part II Remastered

Eonjay6h ago

Either because they technically can't because From Soft wont allow them too, or because From Soft is sorking on the sequal, remaster themselves. Therre is a third option of course and that would be that they are working on it

MinnesotaFatts4h ago

Some part of me wonders if there's some sort of corporate war going on at Sony.

Daver7h ago

I want a new one not a remaster

victorMaje6h ago

TLoU got the remaster & then the remake treatment.
Where is the next bloodborne, or remaster, or remake?

Goodguy015h ago

What it needs is a ps5+pc release. The game absolutely needs a 4k60 update. Lots of money sony is sleeping on while the souls genre is still hot.

MinnesotaFatts4h ago

Tell me you don't know what a remaster is without telling me.

Bloodborne is infamously capped at 30fps on either system--a bizarre design choice given that speed and reaction time is central to the gameplay systems. This capped performance was never patched out officially, unless you jailbreak and mod your console. A remaster for modern hardware, not the infamously finicky PS4 devkits, would be a great way to both hyper-optimize the game *and* drive sales for the PS5, which still doesn't have a system seller title.

RaiderNation9h ago

There might be some licensing red tape they cant get around?

shadowhaxor9h ago

That'd be interesting, but Sony owns the IP 100%. So, I can't see how that is part of the issue, if there is even one.

RaiderNation5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

Maybe Sony isnt interested in doing it without the assistance of Miyazaki and he's not interested? (Just spit-balling).

MinnesotaFatts4h ago

That's the issue according to FROMSOFT. They'd *love* to do a remaster, but Sony won't even return their calls.

Inverno9h ago

Because they're saving that for the PS6 to lure in all the suckers that will think they're making a sequel, but the whole gen will pass by and From won't ever touch it because Song doesn't care for either Demon or Blood outside of remakes.

Furesis6h ago

Because they made them do something else, then they canceled it and who knows what they are doing these days. They dont understand what they have and honestly i dont think they know what they are doing either.

blacktiger5h ago

How bout forget remade and start making new game pls?
