Control Ultimate Edition disrespects fans

GN writes: "Original players paid $60 for Control, plus another $30 for a season pass. Original fans of the franchise have coughed up $90 for the same content that new fans will now be getting with a $40 purchase – but those original fans won’t get the next-gen upgrade."

This is why you guys need to migrate to PC cause you get the best version of these third party games with 60fps+

I only play exclusives on my PS4/switch everything else goes straight on my PC.

sprinterboy2123d ago (Edited 2123d ago )

Did you get a free Blu Ray disk when another starwars edition remaster came out with some new bare bones extras? No you didn't
Why is it we don't mind buying multiple versions of films and anniversary editions etc yet when it's games it should be free?
Granted I think they should offer a £10 upgrade price or something to existing owners as a good gesture but they don't have too? It's a game with new features and upgrades which take money and time?
Would you as a business owner pay your staff knowing your giving a free upgrade and getting nothing in return apart from a few gamers who never picked it up?
If you haven't played control by now, chances are you won't? So they have to get the money back somewhere for the time and effert there staff have put in?

Thunder - I liked the idea of pc gaming, but it's just been a pain for me. Had too many issues trying to get games to run properly even though my PC is comfortably powerful enough. For example I can run the Division 2 on high graphics, but I get jumpy spikes in the frame rate, which happen exactly the same all the way down to the lowest graphics. Much prefer the plug in and play nature of consoles, particularly as I don't have masses of free time due to the kids. Lucky enough that the main reason for the PC is for work so I don't feel like it's wasted money.
Back to the topic at hand, why are people upset that they're not getting a free upgrade for a game that's almost a year old?

Petebloodyonion2123d ago

@sprinterboy
Did you pay your original Starwars Bluray 60$ + Dlc 50$?
Movie discs price usually stays consistent while games drop sharply.
Also, movies make money from the initial release in theater while Movie makes the initial money from a hardcore fan of the franchise.

I remember very fondly that people were calling this a flop

ziggurcat2124d ago

Just another example of gamers expecting everything for free just because they bought the game once.

Christopher2123d ago

Nah, in this case it's understandable anger. It's not about getting all the DLC and the game for less, but only the Ultimate edition gets the free-upgrade to next-gen and not all versions of the game? That's not good business and makes no sense.

Double_O_Revan2123d ago

I can kind of see this decision stem from the fact that the game was just on PS+. I didn't pay anything for the game, and therefore don't feel I should be entitled to any kind of upgrade. But you're right, for those that bought the game AND the DLC, this is a low blow.

At the very least, anyone that bought the Season Pass should be entitled to the upgrade. They've at least paid the equivalent of the Ultimate Edition.

SamPao2123d ago (Edited 2123d ago )

@Agent_00Revan you mean PSNOW, and no you pay for psNOW its not free.
If you want to play the game after august you will still have to buy it, Its so weird that they are doing this... EVERYONE that bought the game and gets the DLCs should be getting the enhanced version, if not then just dont do it at all.

sprinterboy2123d ago

Q: Did you get a free enhanced, remastered version upgrade on a film you once bought?

A: No you didn't

Baza2123d ago (Edited 2123d ago )

Looks like the majority of people think developers just push a next gen button and voila! I don’t believe Remedy promised a free next gen upgrade did they? A lot of people will be picking this up who hadn’t purchased. Not bad business.

UltraNova2123d ago

Agreed. Remedy should have made the enhanced patch free and available to all who already bought the game. They would still make money off of people who want the Ultimate edition; they shouldn't have tied the next-gen patch to it. I mean a move like this is asking for trouble especially when other publishers are offering this upgrade for free.

ziggurcat2123d ago

To be fair, the description was edited from when I responded. I suspect that with enough backlash, they'll make that upgrade free for OG owners.

yomfweeee2123d ago

Nah, it is about cry baby gamers. This game is a year old. The company had to spend money to do next gen upgrades. If you want those upgrades, you can pay again.

Or you can just play via BC.

SamPao2123d ago (Edited 2123d ago )

yeah its a pretty shitty way to do it tbh.

I mean, if you bought the game ON LAUNCH and got all the DLC when they released you FOR SURE have paid more than somebody that gets the ultimate edition. so it really makes 0 sense

I really like the game btw, its great

gamer78042123d ago

right, wanting a patch to upgrade the visuals is exactly the same as wanting an entire game for free... this was not a smart business move plain and simple, a smart one would be allow owners of the dlc and game to upgrade for 5-10$ and explain that there was alot of cost to upgrading the game, fans would under stand this and pay the 5-10$, now instead they are losing goodwill and sales of the game, where they could be raking in 5-10$ as well as new purchasers of the ultimate edition. this isn't rocket science, just smart businesses, I hope they change their minds.

Petebloodyonion2123d ago

What work? Updating the game for 4k/60 frames per second?
You know that the PC got that day 1 right?
It's call max setting
And just for the info, there's strangely no word on a next-gen PC version I wonder why?

gamer78042123d ago

@pete it takes some work. It should be free i agree but if remedy needed to make a business case to 5050 games, 5-10$ would be a win for them financially instead of losing both financially and losing goodwill

sprinterboy2123d ago

I know right, we by multiple versions of yet another remaster starwars film with no complaints cause nobody would ever upset the starwars franchise.
Yet when it comes to upgrades for games it's all hell breaks loose.
Why doesnt everyone start getting banners and boards ready to take on the BS nxt starwars remaster or digitally enhanced ffs.
Gamers have gone from virgins to Crybabies.

Tacoboto2123d ago

This game was very poor-selling.
The people who did spend $60 and bought the $20-$30 DLC pack - the most loyal fans - won't get the same bonus as people who waited a year and spent have as much *for literally the same exact content* with zero way to upgrade.

To top it all off, as an RTX owner, we got the game for free last fall with our graphics cards.

It's consumer fuckery

SamPao2123d ago

You tell me, so WHY do they give you the upgraded version for ps5 if you buy the new ultimate version for ps4?

Edgelordsupreme2123d ago

Could you post this tenuous point again? I dont think everyone got it the first three times.

AKS2122d ago

The "Ultimate Edition" is the same content as what many Remedy fans have already purchased.

deadfrag2123d ago

This is very lame from Remedy!

warriorcase2123d ago

more than likely a move from 505 Games being the publisher. Devs rarely have a say in these sorts of things.

bcbproductions2123d ago

how? you want a free upgrade to next gen for a game that came out a year ago?

AKS2122d ago

The publisher is responsible for things like this. Platinum got crap for not properly updating Nier: Automata when it was SquareEnix that is responsible for funding this type of maintenance, which they declined to do.

Christopher2123d ago

***However, it must be acknowledged that Control runs like hot garbage on current consoles***

Runs perfectly fine for me on PS4...

---

I agree with the sentiment that it's crap business to not auto-upgrade every version of the game. I'm assuming some backlash will fix that and the PR response will be "it was a communication error, we always intended to upgrade every version of the game."

Freezedried722123d ago

Oh man, you're lucky! I reviewed the original game on PS4 for another site, and really loved it but had a terrible time with the frame rate. I came back and reviewed The Foundation expansion, and was...well, not shocked, but kinda surprised that I was still seeing the same issues. My frame rate regularly dips down into single digits. I am not the sort that normally cares about frame rate, so long as it doesn't interfere with gameplay. But in this case, it did.

Thanks for reading the article!

Report: New Trademark for "Control: Resonant" Unearthed, Ahead of TGA

New evidence suggests a Control reveal is imminent. A trademark discovery ahead of The Game Awards hints at big news for Remedy's franchise.

Storm23190d ago

Control was really good. There was a ton of backtracking and running through the building from one end to the other a ton of times, but otherwise I loved it. Can't wait to see the sequel.

medman189d ago

Yeah it was awesome....looking forward to this reveal

REDGUM189d ago

I really enjoyed Control though without the mini map i found myself lost and or unsure of what to do too often and gave in on the game about 30% in.
Ive just re-downloaded it with the latest update with the enhanced graphics but unaure I'll dig back into it agaith with my current backlog.
Looking forward to seeing whats next from Remedy though.

toxic-inferno188d ago

I know exactly what you mean. I've played the game through twice and have had the same issue both times.

What I found on my latest playthrough was that the best way to navigate is to use the physical signs in-game as well as the map.

How the Remedy Connected Universe does the multiverse right

ScribbleCat said: Media is certainly no stranger to connecting all their properties together. Comic books have been doing this for generations, and TV is also known for special crossover episodes, which confirm the notion that they take place in the same fictional world. Video games, which can be barely called a new medium at this point, also have some interesting overlaps with connecting different games. For example, Valve’s Portal and Half-Life show how subtle hints can give players more theories to chew on. Old classics like DOOM and Wolfenstein also share similarities. But my favorite connection between games is the Remedy Connected Universe. While only a connection between Alan Wake and Control have been confirmed, there is SO much more to explore with Remedy’s crazy take on this old formula. And, according to Sam Lake, this is only the beginning.

SimpleSlave349d ago

They really should release the full Quantum Break experience on the PS5. Sure, it's a middle-of-the-road third-person shooter and a perfect example of self-indulgence, but why not? It was fun in short burst and it completes the Remedy set until Max Payne 1+2 Remakes get released later on.

Do it, Microsawft. Don't be cowards.

Yui_Suzumiya563d ago

Yeah but this was announced before the Max Payne Remake after all

LucasRuinedChildhood563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

What does "unlocking some previously released content" actually mean though? I would imagine it should be "previously unreleased content". Bit odd.

DaReapa563d ago

Right. Especially since the Ultimate Edition supposedly contained everything.

raWfodog563d ago

I only played about an hour of Control when I added it to my library back when it was one of the PS+ ‘free’ games. I’ll start it over again after the early 2025 update is dropped. I keep hearing that it’s a good game.

jznrpg563d ago

You can make that statement for any game. It’s called gameplay loop. Not everyone is going to enjoy the same loops but all games are repetitive by nature

RedDevils563d ago

Agree it was very boring game. Could not get into it. Remember me the game I played on PS3 is still better than this.

Chocoburger563d ago

These days "RPG" translates to constantly grinding for experience points, wasting time upgrading gear, and repeatedly collecting resources off the ground.

Please don't be an Ubishit style filler game.

Yui_Suzumiya563d ago

Hopefully it'll be more like Mass Effect

Amplitude563d ago (Edited 563d ago )

Remedy doesn't really make mistakes. It'll be good, I'm sure.

Inverno563d ago

So in other words it's an action game needlessly fluffed out with RPG mechanics and a pointless leveling system. I really enjoy RPGs when they're actually RPGs but modern action games really tire me out when they shoehorn in mechanics they don't need. All this does is make a 20 hour game into a 40 hour game because missions become locked behind level requirements, and enemies become damage sponges. It's not fun, it's tedious.
