What Microsoft's Project xCloud partnership with Samsung really means

At Samsung Unpacked, Microsoft took to the stage to talk about xCloud features exclusive to the Samsung Galaxy app store on mobile. Is this all just marketing, or is there something more to it?

Literally no one is going to buy a Samsung phone to use xCloud. It’s just PR. I don’t know a single person that wants to play a console games being streamed on a cell phone or tablet. It’s an unpleasant experience with the addition of lag and video compression.

“ Literally no one is going to buy a Samsung phone to use xCloud.”

It’s a good thing then that xCloud is on every Android device then.

“ I don’t know a single person that wants to play a console games being streamed on a cell phone or tablet.”

You should leave the bubble of N4G and try social media or reddit. You’ll see the excitement people have for this service.

Actually I did switch from Apple and got a Note 10+ and a Tab S6 because they supported Xcloud. I've been streaming games for months now, and it really is a great service. And knowing that I'll be able to stream any game from my Series X is actually pretty cool. You might like it if you try it, and if you don't others do and many more will

NeoGamer2322114d ago (Edited 2114d ago )

I am not going to sit here and say xCloud is the greatest thing since sliced bread or the ultimate gaming feature that is a "game changer" or "system seller". To me, streaming is another option to play when I don't have my console easily accessible to me or to stream directly from. It won't be my primary way to play for the forseeable future.

What I will say is I have PSNow and there is no comparison between xCloud and PSNow. xCloud is an all around better cloud streaming service and you would be surprised how well it works. PSNow is ok, I have played thru games on it (including God of War) and it does work. But, no where near the level xCloud is during my beta experience.

I liken xCloud to a portable gaming companion to my console. I prefer to always play in my gaming room where i have a really nice setup, but when that is not available because I am sitting in a parked vehicle waiting for someone, standing in a lineup for something, dead time at a friends place, or travelling somewhere where there is good cellular reception, I will be sure to pull out my phone and the Razer Kishi when it comes in to fill my dead space with maybe a few games here and there.

So three months Game pass for those who preorder Note 20 and access to the entire Xbox store on Galaxy phones so someone can buy an game or app (that they can't actually play on their phone). Did I miss anything?

RamRod882115d ago

Are they giving them 3 months of gamepass ultimate or gamepass?

RazzerRedux2115d ago

Article just says Game Pass.

alb18992115d ago

On phones there is just one Gamepass.

RamRod882114d ago

Maybe MS will have gamepass for Phone/xcloud like they have gamepass for PC and console. The. Gamepass ultimate covers all bases.

alb18992115d ago (Edited 2115d ago )

Yes you miss something. They can play all gamepass game on Android phones since September 7 I think. You just have to subscribe to Gamepass. On phones you don't have to call it ultimate since the only way to play with phones is with Xcloud.

RazzerRedux2115d ago (Edited 2115d ago )

Clearly I'm referring to the deal specifically with Samsung as the title states. You are talking Android in general.

SocialDanny1232115d ago

I expect Game Pass to grow rapidly, because of its integration with social media platforms and partnerships with device makers.

To compete in the Cloud Gaming market and be a dominate player, you need both of these things.

King_Noctis2114d ago

Apple is not the number one phone maker any more, sale-wise. Hauwei and Samsung are fighting for that spot.

ElementX2114d ago (Edited 2114d ago )

Nobody is going to pay $15 per month to stream games on their phone when most won't even pay $5 for a phone game.

Minute Man 7212114d ago

There is a market for everything. I won't be streaming to my phone but people will

Sayai jin2114d ago

People pay tons of maoney for games and MT like Faklout Shelter.

@Element X, "most won't even pay $5 for a phone game." No they would pay $10 a month for access to over a 100 games.

ElementX2114d ago (Edited 2114d ago )

I think the difference is people usually play phone games a few minutes here and there, not 8 hours straight. Even access to 100 games isn't worth it for most people.

BillyG0AT2114d ago

do you even understand the arrogance it takes to speak for over 2 billion people?

ElementX2114d ago

Lol, I didn't mean literally everybody who owns a mobile phone. Damn, lighten up

glennhkboy2114d ago

$15 is for ALL GAMES in GamePass, not a single game.

King_Noctis2114d ago

Same thing can be said for streaming services like Netflix. If it is good, then people will pay for it, simple as that.

Sayai jin2114d ago

Some people play games on mobile for hours and hours at a time. I would think that most casual, the majority, spend 20 to 30 minutes a day. That in it self won't stop them from paying $10 USD a month to have access to over 100 games. Especially since mobile games are notorious for MT and other add-on costs.

Note that the mobile industry tracks how much people are spending on mobile gaming, roughly, people spend over $50B USD each year on mobile gaming. With over 1.3 billion people who mobile game, no one can say they will pay to play on xCloud or it isn't worth it either, but the numbers point to the fact they are willing to spend quite a bit on gaming on their mobile devices.

This is a great move. Looking forward to XCloud as I currently stream my Xbox One games to my work tablet and play my Xbox games now using the Xbox Game streaming service at work and it currently works well, with a good internet connection, can't wait to try my games using the Cloud service. The Switch get praised for being portable and being able to play my Xbox One games on the go has been great for me. Hopefully XCloud can improve on that.

Valkron12114d ago

Xcloud really is a great service. I see a lot of people hating on it, but having both i can honestly say Xcloud blows PS Now away! And I'll be getting it with Gamepass Ultimate anyways, since I prepaid thru 2022 with 3 x $35 a year CDKeys Xbox gold then upgraded them all to Ultimate for $1. I get Gamepass on PC, console, Tablet, and Cell for years. Not bad for just over $100

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
