GI.Biz Interview: Eyeing the Future

You could be forgiven for thinking that it was Nintendo and Harmonix who took the lead in revolutionising the casual gaming market through peripherals and novel control mechanics in the last couple of years. But that would be to ignore the quiet success of Sony's EyeToy for PlayStation 2, which in five years has built up an impressive installed base of 10.5 million units in PAL territories alone.

Those EyeToys are largely used to play in-house software, namely the Play series of games created by Sony's London studio. This month, Sony releases EyeToy Play: Hero and EyeToy Play: PomPom Party. These sword-fighting and cheerleading games are the first to use peripherals and the camera's colour-tracking ability for more precise motion detection - and, in Hero's case, the ability to take the player off-screen and present the action from a first-person perspective. London studio is also working on its first PS3 title, EyePet, revealed at this year's Games Convention.

this game alone started the whole exercise craze the Wii is riding on but at least it was a fun game and you didn't need to hold a stupid remote in your hands!

i will never understand why Harmonix & Sony didn't follow through on this.
yes the lighting was not easy to setup but once you had it right it was an amazing game.

common sony, go infra red and you have the holodeck working on PS3!

Right, antigrav was awesome and they had a kinetics game/workout with Nike.

Eye pet looks great, I have yet to see anything on Hero. Off to google I go.

First thing in forever I have heard about the eye. I bought it and use it to have video calls with my brother who is a state away, so it serves a purpose for me. I just had always hoped that they would fix the horrific audio problems that seem to plague it. I had hoped to use it as a hands (and ear) free audio device for warhawk and the the such. This is not a possibility unfortunately. I had figured that since the PS3 does know what sounds it is emitting from the speakers that it would know what sounds to block out. That is not the case. Games like COD4 are the worst since it has the mic on constantly so people get to hear whatever game noises your hearing as well. I hoped that we would hear about a firmware patch that would alleviate this but it hasnt happened. Atleast it does a purpose for me.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
