Five Next-Gen Console Questions that Still Need Answers

With four months at most until the ninth generation of consoles gets underway, there are still a number of important questions floating around that both Sony and Microsoft still need to address before fans can have a greater sense of confidence that their substantial purchases will be justified for the launch and beyond.

#2 No. PS3 games can't be supported, PS1/2 games would require digital encapsulation and that's thousands of games where most popular have gotten ports to PS4 or similar. Expect PS Now to be the PS3 support, for now, other than remasters. Expect PS1/2 game support to be up to the publishers and you will have to rebuy them.

#3 November. Halo Infinite.

#4 Yes.

Why do you think that PS3 can't be supported? They can do PS1/2/3 through emulation. I still believe that full platform support might be targeted even if it won't be ready for launch. Having Playstations back catalog playable on one console would be an additional selling point. PS Now is not an attractive alternative in my opinion.

***Why do you think that PS3 can't be supported?***

Because the CPU isn't powerful enough to simulate the cell architecture as needed. They would need a top of the line CPU still to do that. Emulation on PC of PS3 games are still extremely buggy and have massive framerate issues after years of working on it.

*** They can do PS1/2/3 through emulation.***

But they won't.

***I still believe that full platform support might be targeted even if it won't be ready for launch. ***

I don't.

***Having Playstations back catalog playable on one console would be an additional selling point.***

I don't think Sony thinks it that important in comparison to the amount of effort it would take to make it happen. Maybe the next generation or the generation after that? But, I believe we will likely see more pay-to-own emulated games much like those on the PS4/PS3. And, I also believe that the lackluster sale of those titles that exist is why they haven't moved forward with more emulation.

Sony has already ported some of their major PS3 titles to the PS4, and they might port more over time, but I highly doubt they are looking to do PS3 emulation at this time due to how much work it would take and the CPU isn't capable of supporting it.

***PS Now is not an attractive alternative in my opinion.***

PSNow is a functioning alternative that doesn't require game-by-game emulation. The cell architecture involves managing memory vastly different than anything else Sony has put out. It is a mountain of itself to get that to work, let alone that each game manages that memory differently.

I don't see how you can say that the CPU is not powerful enough when we've seen PS3 emulation work with comparable CPU power on PC. RPCS3 is developed by outside programmers having to reverse engineer the PS3 architecture on a fairly tight budget. Sony has first hand knowledge of both the PS3 and PS5 architectures.

While the PS5 CPU is clocked lower than comparable desktop counterparts, Sony could easily minimize the CPU overhead of the OS in PS3-bc mode. They might be able to clock the CPU higher using their smartshift implementation, since PS3 emulation won't be as GPU intensive (So far they've only talked about shifting CPU power to the GPU though). There is also an advantage of having standardized hardware across the board, which would make low level optimization much easier.

The R&D cost for a software based solution would be fairly minimal, but if Sony decided on pursuing full compatibility early on, some hardware customizations to make the process more efficient could be a financially viable option as well. Here are some factors why I believe that aiming for full compatibility is worth it from a business perspective:

-Compatibility with Playstation's back catalog is a selling point.
-Sequels could see a small increase in sale numbers when people have an easy way to catch up on the previous games.
-Being able to keep selling old games as an additional source of revenue.
-Perhaps most importantly: PS Now servers currently require custom PS3 silicon. A working PS3 emulator would make that unnecessary and save money in the long run.

@Shaggy2304:
Bringing PS1/2 compatibility to PS4 would've been a weird look without the PS3 compatibility in there. They would have to explain why the PS4 isn't powerful enough to emulate PS3, when the Xbox One didn't have the same problem with 360 bc. By the time Xbox brought bc, MS were so far behind in the race, that Sony weren't forced to react immediately. I'd be surprised if bc on PS5 wouldn't have come up internally at this point though.

I've already given some reasons why I think there would be a financial incentive to invest in emulation in my second post. The most important one might be that it would simplify the manufacturing of future PS Now servers.

And as for the argument that Sony doesn't have to worry about their mindshare, because they are ahead: I don't buy that for a second. We've seen where complacency can lead especially at the start of a generation. I think that Sony learned that lesson. I sure hope that they take their competition seriously.

Addressing the points you edited in:

-People want new games:
How does the fact that people on n4g say that they want new games relate to my argument that having full compatibility for legacy systems would be beneficial for hardware sales? Those two things have nothing to do with one another.

-Sony's mindshare:
I adressed that in my original response to you.

-Digital Sales
The majority of future game sales will be digital anyway. Retro games also benefit from smaller file sizes which makes them digitally more accessible, even for people that don't have high bandwidth internet.

-PS Now Servers
Do you think they're done producing PS Now servers? Current servers don't support PS5 games. Not to mention that PS Now is expected to grow a lot in the future, requiring more servers. They'll have to keep producing custom Cell processors to provide PS3 compatibility. This alone is enough reason for Sony to invest in the R&D necessary for PS3 emulation and while that doesn't necessarily mean that they'll unlock that functionality on PS5 it's a strong argument for pursuing bc to begin with.

***I don't see how you can say that the CPU is not powerful enough when we've seen PS3 emulation work with comparable CPU power on PC. ***

You've seen bits and pieces, that themselves run like crap. You have not seen a full game running emulation on any CPU on PC that isn't buggy and broken throughout and in a state that is considered "ready for release."

Halo Infinite isn't Series X exclusive. The article was asking when games will be made for Series X ONLY. No Xbox One support. Halo is releasing an ALL Xbox consoles.

Another big question is:

Will Sony stop censoring Japanese games coming to the West?

I can't believe that Persona 5 Royal in the West had a few minor changes to a scene. Sony and other companies need to understand that censoring anything in these games is wrong. We never need these companies trying to act like our parent. Consumers will always decide if they want to buy the game or not.

Can someone enlighten me what the big deal about backwards capability is? I love my classic PS1 and 2 games and as much as it sucks I may never get to play some of those games ever again that's OK. Life is short and there's only so many hours in a day and there's more than enough fantastic games coming to next gen to everyone entertained.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing34d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9234d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit34d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing34d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9234d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
