The biggest PS4 problems the PS5 needs to fix

The PlayStation 4 was a major player in the gaming market. The console's lower initial price made it seem like a comparatively better deal than the Xbox One. Furthermore, the PS4 maintained its early lead with a solid roster of exclusive titles. However, the PS4, while an impressive console, has its flaws.

Usually, console manufacturers right the wrongs of the past with new console generations. The Nintendo Switch, for instance, blew past the Wii U's sales by improving on its predecessor's missteps. But, unlike Nintendo, Sony (and Microsoft) implemented mid-generation upgrade consoles like the PS4 Pro. While gamers had mixed reactions, the Pro fixed several problems with the original PS4. Moreover, the Pro provided extra horsepower to give late adopters — and anyone who didn't mind buying a PS4 twice — the definitive Sony console experience.
Yet, issues remain. The PlayStation 5 has a golden opportunity to shore up the PS4 and PS4 Pro's remaining problems.

So true - backwards compatibility is something that is making me seriously consider switching to Xbox

darthv722124d ago

but... its got that covered with the 99% of the ps4 library. I say 99% because there is likely to be a few that dont work right so they cant say 100%

lnfiniteLoop2124d ago

didnt Sony say only the top selling 100 games would be supported... or has that changed now...

ziggurcat2124d ago

"didnt Sony say only the top selling 100 games would be supported."

They never said only 100.

I have not seen any official information saying PS4 games will all play on the PS5.

The official news were that Sony asked the Developers to make all PS4 Games released after 2020-07 compatible with PS5.

UltraNova2124d ago

My list in no particular order:

- Faster system menu, especially when I'm trying to access it while playing a game (I'm sure the new SoC and SSD will fix this)
- Better internet connectivity hardware (LAN and Wifi)
- Better controller battery - at least 20hrs per charge
- Native support (both hardware and software) for external sound systems - headphones and traditional sound systems
- Better thermals (this seems to have been addressed too)

Yodasfavoritesoda2124d ago

I don’t have any faith in Sony delivering a single game that isn’t available at launch. They always talk a big game then drop support for back compat as soon as possible only to turn around and try to charge you for the same games over and over again. Super shady move that everyone is just happy to let them get by with

Belbrock912124d ago

They have acquired a patent to emulate previous gen games, and over 4000 PS4 titles are supposed to be compatible at launch. But the emulation will likely be through PS Now which is only in like 40% of regions

indysurfn2123d ago

Only thing I care about that is Not good one PS4 is the ability to connect any Blue-Tooth Head phone.

Plenty of people seem to be upset that they have to play the PS4 version of Yakuza 7 because the PS5 version isn’t ready for launch. Even though it’s getting a free upgrade and will most likely work on the PS5.

But who cares? We PlayStation gamers will buy a PS5 to play PS5 games and ONLY PS5 games, right?

Knushwood Butt2124d ago

Yeah, the fan on my Pro can be insanely loud, but oddly recent games like tlou2 and GoT are surprisingly quiet, as if the devs worked some new magic.

UltraNova2124d ago (Edited 2124d ago )

Shaggy,

Take Demon Souls for example. It was released 11 years ago only on ps3. Since then many have joined the PS family, including Xbox gamers who never got the chance to play it. In addition, just look where From Soft is at today, their games have achieved legendary status and gained millions of fans since 2009 so its only natural that a full-on quality remake (with renewed online support for PVP) would garner so much attention and fanfare. All this would never be achieved by simply being able to put a ps3 disc in your ps5 and just play it.

Full-on remakes and good remasters (to a lesser extent) make people feel they'll get something more than what they experienced with the OG release - some cases go above and beyond (SotC, FF7R, Demon Souls, etc). BC with simple rez/frame rate bumps don't even come close to what quality remakes can offer, and demand for it should not be confused with demand for fully reworked older games.

darthv722124d ago

@cell... that is a very tired argument. Are you going to straight face tell people that you dont like watching older movies or listening to albums from years ago? Just because something is old doesnt mean it has no entertainment value. Shit man... I still like to play contra. And would you look at that... the old contra is available to play on the PS4. An old game being played on newer hardware. Go figure.

And...that does mean you have to buy (or re-buy) cross platform games for MS regardless? They may not be so backwardly compatible next gen either...🤔
Quandary..!
🙃

_dangerclose_2124d ago

Love when I see this comment becasue its so flawed and transparent, so you'll switch from Playstation becasue they wont let you play your old games on the new hardware to a console that wont let you play your games at all, makes no sense and comes off as propaganda-ish. Feel free to "switch" though if its what you need to do.

Luc202124d ago

New account and obvs he/she already has the console they are intending to make a switch to 😂

leejohnson2222124d ago

4000 ps4 games not enough games for you? Since when did you upgrade anything and expect all your old stuff to work with your new device? I wouldn't buy next gen if all you want to do is stay in the past.

Mithan2124d ago

Sony has said they will make the entire PS4 catalog backwards compatible.

One assumes that both disk versions AND your PS4 library on Playstation Network, will work.

Rumors are that they are finally working on building their own emulators for PS1, 2 and 3 to work on the PS5 and beyond. I think this makes sense and is a good business move. Volunteers can do it online for free now, Sony tossing a few million at a couple dozen software engineers for a year or two should get some good results as well.

Lexreborn22124d ago

If BC is what’s convincing you to switch. What good does fear do you if your library is on ps4 and you have to rebuy it for Xbox?

Chevalier2124d ago

https://blog.playstation.co...

"UPDATE: A quick update on backward compatibility – With all of the amazing games in PS4’s catalog, we’ve devoted significant efforts to enable our fans to play their favorites on PS5. We believe that the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 titles will be playable on PS5."

This article is full of mistakes. $9.99 a month for cloud saves?

I just bought one year of PS Plus for $29 🤔

ziggurcat2124d ago

$9.99 is probably the monthly rate if you were to do that. Obviously that's not the case if you pay for a full year, and even less so when you find deals on the yearly rate.

Elda2124d ago

Personally for me BC is fine but only if the PS5 is going to upscale the resolution & fps of PS4 titles that I would go back & play some PS4 titles like Bloodborne otherwise I won't bother with BC knowing I've played most PS4 games & I'll just be concentrating on playing PS5 games only.

BenRC012124d ago

Fan noise. Its absurdly loud on a 1st gen Pro.

ziggurcat2124d ago

Yeah, it's a bit loud at times. I have to turn the subtitles on for most games.

Pyrofire952124d ago

I don't have much a problem with it. I think I got lucky but I also have taken it apart to clean out dust twice since getting it, which I image most people don't do. Also headphones, which is probably the biggest reason I don't notice it as much.

SaveFerris2124d ago

It can be even worse on the base model (MGSV edition). The fan is working overtime when I'm playing Ghost of Tsushima.
