What a joke. They really need to stop they are confusing their customers too much by spinning and spinning.

This is so obvious that they pushed the « most powerful console » stuff too far that now we are starting to see glimpses of real next gen footage they will not be able to deliver anything they have insinuated (4k60fps everywhere, 120fps!!!).
Once again, PS5 and XSX will deliver the same level of performances in real live, the differences will be indistinguishable for most of us.
Remember the Spencer quote « it must be felt, cannot be seen » that was already going in that direction.

But spinning back to BC is a poor move in my opinion.
If history as proved anything, it’s that even if BC is a valuable addition it has never decided the fate of next gen domination.

I’m afraid nothing as changed on MS side, they are still trying to sell geese for swans to trick people buying their product for what it is not.
That’s pitiful because the core function of their product ( deliver quality games and popular IP iterations) is relegated to the background every time although they are providing some interesting stuff for their fan base.

There are hundreds of games still worth playing over the decades, especially over this gen and last.

When it comes to last gen, I can only play those games today on one modern platform. And I will still with Series X and they'll be even better. Respecting my purchases over the majority of my lifetime is very important.

So, does MS say these things in the hopes that people actually will start believing it? For that matter, do all companies do this?

I've been seeing various gaming press or industry people telling me what should be important to me, and others. Why does it have to be so complicated? Just bring games. Many people, including myself, have been saying this for the longest time. The rest is just gravy.

Bc is a good feature, I've got a back catalogue of games I may want to re visit one day but, a console not having it wouldn't put me off,
I personally would put new ips and exclusive games above this feature

For me this is a great feature and something I want. I don't want to have 2 consoles set up or to keep connecting an old console to play games from the back end of the current gen that I have purchased and and yet to complete.
To be able to complete my backlog and play ALL my games on one device is high up my list of requirements for a new console. It is not higher or as high as exclusive games or power but it comes third for me.
Add to that the fact that some of these games will genuinely look and play better on the Series X and it is an even more attractive prospect.
The first year or so of a new generation does not see truly groundbreaking games on new console hardware. You will have a couple of games that are good and serve as a tech demo of sorts for a new hardware feature (Ratchet and clank for fast loading, Minecraft with ray tracing) but not many will be significantly better than what we are getting at the back end of this gen. If you look at a game like TLOU2 or even Red Dead 2, they look as good as most of what we will see at the beginning of next gen.
This is an important feature and one that will sway the decision of some consumers, if marketed well.

For the people who says that compatibility is supper important, i bet all of you have your new blue ray players that also come with VHS (since is important to keep playing all the old things in one device right?).. also your home cinemas probably play cassette tapes right? OR IS THAT THE OUTDATED THINGS ARE NOT LONGER IMPORTANT>>??? would like to hear (read) the answers :)

It honestly makes me wonder how many people play PS3/Xbox 360 games on their current gen devices.

Personally I don't care about backwards compatibility (it doesn't hurt, but hardly a selling point for me).

It will be interesting to see how many people buy a One X to play Crackdown 3 or Sea of Thieves.

BC is a good addition. Most ppl buy a new next gen console to play latest next gen titles not old games. Although nothing wrong with old games it's not the reason to buy a new console.

Most people will put power and speed over compatibility, so it isn't as important. Give a true next gen game on any console.

Well PS5 is BC with PS4, so I don't get it, why people are making so much noise about it on MS side. I do not think that (limited in fact) compatibility to X360 is such an important feature. There not many games from that era that people really need to revisit. And when it comes to smooth transition and BC with games that are still played yet do not have Next Gen versions (typical for fighting games) both MS and Sony are compatible so what is the big deal?

Translation: Microsoft tries to make excuses for why they decided they won't have any truly next gen games.

Have fun playing games that don't have any kind of advanced AI or have limited enemies on screen ect. because every game has to be limited to xbones jaguar cpu. Enjoy your elevator rides because games have to be made to support xbone HDD.

Fingers crossed seeing Take Two and Activision Blizzard follows suit casually without making a new way to rebrand their games , they are pretty good at cheating even on reviews they could do it and getway from it cause their customers just don't care , they just wanna buy the next installment.

I can’t speak for everyone but I expect to be able to play my old games in a new system, because like everyone who buys a console or pc, it’s an investment. When I bought a blu-ray player I expected it play blu rays, DVDs, and CDs. I hate the notion that Xbox is doing a bad thing to support its product with back compatibility I still love my PS3 because of the ability of playing PS one and PS2 game while still enjoying the current gen at that time. Too much blindness hate on convenience. The greatest part is for those who hate Xbox it’s not required to you to buy it to play Sony or Nintendo games. Me I buy all 3 ( Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft) I’m a fanboy for gaming nothing more.

I like BC, but from my experience, you usually get back to one or two titles. And its more important during gen transition. But now games on current gen look so good, that BC is Very interesting option for People who hadnt XO or ps4. But BC two gen back is nonsense. Even on pc I barely play old games (only TTDX LOL :-).

I really wish Sony did true backwards compatibility. I have so many games on PS4 and many I haven’t finished and it’s be so awesome to have the ability to play these on a next-gen system instead of keeping out an older console to play.

People on this site are hypocrites. Gamers complained the PS4’s lack of backward compatibility with the PS3. There is no real negative of Xbox series X being backwards compatible with the Xbox One.

BC can only give you some wind during the first couple of years. A console gen lasts 6-7 years. Touting it as a 'game changing' feature is laughable. Also, it isn't as if the competition isn't gonna support to the same features.

And responsiveness. With super low latency controller and console. That's why they talk about the 'feel' of games. 60+ fps with quick response controls(something consoles lacked) feels nice on PC- can't wait to see how it works on series x.

It is great to be able to take your gamed with you into next gen. Not only that but they will look and play better. Absolutely great feature

Baing able to play an older favourite and see it being given a new (free) update has been fantastic. What MS has been doing for backcompat has been awesome. Even OG xbox games benefit from their wizardry

Since the old games are going to use the new hardware to play better, with more frames and better resolutions, plus HDR and Ray Tracing, bring it.

The PS5 will Play 4000 PS4 games at launch and sony are making sure the top 100 PS4 games will be on that List of playable games, any game made in the last four years will in my opinion get some sort of upgrade at the very least all sonys games
