TGR: Killzone 2 Beta Impressions

According to the writer, Stew Shearer: "Having spent some time with the game, I can affirm that indeed, it is rather solid. (At least the portion I got to play.) But sadly, that is probably the biggest compliment I can give it."

Not surprising. The videos looked great, visually, but gameplay seemed like the same old FPS junk. However, this was interesting:

"Something else that surprised me to no small degree was how unimpressed I was by the visuals. I in no way mean to say they were bad; they just weren’t what I had been led to believe they would be by the countless screenshots floating around the web. "

sonarus6371d ago

lol this guy shouldn't say anymore after the comment on the visuals or he will just embarrass himself

WANNA GET HIGH6371d ago

I am in the killzone2 beta and i can assure u this reviwer is chatting air....

First of i did not see the lackluster textures he saw.If u are in the beta go and use ur sniper to zoom in o the floor and u will see the rock shaped out crisp, and to think it is a compresed beta(about 400mb) u can still see the detail on the gun sharp. And bare in mind the game is still a couple of months away,if it is lookig this good how will the finish game look like on CD.This guy has not played the game.If u are in the beta u will know why i said that.Yes they are glitches but its only a MULTIPLAYER BETA and yet people are talking like its the finished. This is the stage were people who have played it gives the devs feedbck on whats good and whats not.The only thing i dont like is the sniper using motion control, its a nice idea but it dose not work very well, and throwing frags need to more smooth. That is the only thing i can say bad about this game, the rest is solid and fun.

I dont care what negative press this game gets whe it comes, from what i have played i am buying it.I dont let review scores stop me from buying a game. The 7/10 EDGE has alerday got waiting for this game dose not mean sh1t to me.

TheSadTruth6371d ago (Edited 6371d ago )

I wonder if you realize saying "Just beta" is exactly what Bungie said about Halo. How did that turn out?

Let's be honest, not much is going to change, if the game isn't stellar now, it's not going to be stellar at launch. I haven't played it so I cannot comment, but you are setting yourself up for a huge letdown it sounds like.

I don't know how you people can discredit his opinion on the graphics, he said they were too drab, which is a reasonable complaint, just like it is with GoW. He still said they were excellent and had the best lighting he's ever seen...

edit: lol @ disagrees, I feel sorry for you kids

callahan096371d ago

TheSadTruth, you usually tick me off because of your hatred against the PS3. I usually find it to be pretty damn irrational, in all honesty. That said, I find myself actually agreeing with your comment here. It all seems on the up and up to me.

Nathaniel_Drake6371d ago

@1
Once you are in the beta you will take back what you said 10 fold, the graphics are the best I've seen, I played COD4, Halo3, and Gears of War

You are not going to have everyone say this game isn't great, but majority says it is, this is the first time I heard anything negative about it, a very good time to get hits on your site is to go the other way just a thought

Anyway the badge mixing just add to multiplayer and the way they organized it just makes you want to play more, please stop making assumptions from these reviewers and try to get the REAL review from us, the people that have the beta and then sum it up and average it out to what you think is right, there is a lot of politics going on among these sites so you have to be wary, I just hope everyone can d/l the beta so they can experience how realistic the gameplay is, I mean the guns have different heaviness to them and the sniper rifle is by far the hardest gun to use you have to be dang gone accurate

fishd6371d ago

KZ 2 bring the worst out of 'the other console's fan'.I rike it:)

Genesis56371d ago

Yep. It sure brings out the sour grapes doesn't it.

callahan096371d ago

Wow. I'm surprised with all of the disagrees on my comment.

Let me clarify:

The thing I agree with fundamentally is that the beta is basically the final. I played the Halo 3 beta and then the final game, and there was literally no difference between the two. I agree that if you don't like the Killzone 2 beta, you're almost guaranteed not to like the final product.

That said, I think the game looks like it will be high quality and good fun, and I'm very excited to play it.

Also, I think Killzone 2 looks gorgeous and I can't wait to play it. But it doesn't have nearly the range of color that Resistance 2 has (as an example), and so I think it is fair to compare its color-scale to that of a Gears of War, for instance. It's a touch on the gray side, you can't deny that. It's gorgeous, it's impressive, and it's gray.

There, I said it.

Kleptic6371d ago

theSadTruth...exactly right...

beta tests are not run to fix visuals...Resistance 2 had arguably bad visuals in the multiplayer beta...the final version does too...halo 3 had 'wtf srsly?' visuals in the beta...and so did the final version...

what visual problems anyone finds in the beta, aside from obvious glitches (seeing through a wall, lighting flipping out at a certain spot or something) will be there when the game releases...

but that isn't a problem...this guy sounded misleading by being 'unimpressed'...because he certainly was by the lighting and animation...but didn't prefer the art direction...which is fine, as its simply an opinion...I happen to love it, but understand why some would prefer more cartoony styles of resistance or halo...actually I don't understand why, but thats a different matter altogether...

now GG did confirm the textures to be heavily compressed in the beta...and would be streamed fully uncompressed from the BD for the real game...that will make textures appear better than they do now, but its unknown just how much...

but at the same time...I have no clue what he is talking about with them looking bad in the first place...as the ground in the game looks real...no other way to put it...you stare at the ground, and you don't know you are playing a video game...Resistance 2?...doesn't have a comparably good texture in the entire game...he has no idea what he is talking about it if he thinks resistance 2 has great textures, and killzone 2 doesn't...that is the exact opposite of the truth...

its obvious overall that this guy doesn't prefer realistically grounded shooters, as he apparently had more fun in the incredibly average Resistance 2 competitive mode (co op is great, competitive?...come on guys, its pretty lame)...so it was pretty much a no win situation from the start for him...but he also makes glaring mistakes with comparing the game to others...as in: 32 players 'only'...only?...very few shooters overall, and ZERO with this visual caliber have 32 players...3 shooters this generation have more...R1, R2, and Frontlines...and you could count the titles that have 32 players on one hand most likely...with how intense this game can be, 32 players is more than enough...when you see 31 other players on screen at once and the same ridiculous lighting and particle effects all going off in your face...you simply have to smile...because if that doesn't impress you...I guarantee you won't be impressed until the next generation of consoles arrives; and that nothing has made you grin yet this generation...

ultimolu6370d ago

That guy is on crack. I'm in the beta too and this game is nothing short of AMAZING. The gunfire...it was ultra realistic. The best game I have ever laid eyes on.

computer6370d ago

Being in the beta myself, that guy can't possibly say anything bad about visuals. That's just pathetic.

WANNA GET HIGH6371d ago

Sadly ur chatting air also and ur not the truth. This game graphics/lighting is amazing.I dont care if they say its to grew or what ever, the point is the art style the use of the graphics is mind blowing. And they is colour, the market stage has plenty of colour. If u play the the stage that is not dark u will see the best light ever ona console. When u stare into the sun the reflection on the gun is so smooth and u can actulay see the sun ray reflect in ur eye in a very realistic way.The destruction is amazing, just shoot a rocket luncher on one of the pilars and u will see how it breaks apart leaving crumbs deflecting of the floor. And the game play s FUN.Once u have unlcoked all the ranks and have every body to use u will find mixing it up at different stage never gets repeatative.Yes there is friedly fire but u can create ur own game to set it off so u dont get points taken.

Every one that is hating on this game will get owned in every way, what i have played has made me look at other FPS differently.I dont care if the game dose not inovate, look at mirrios edge,it was packed with innovation but see how it turned out.The game dose what every one who plays FPS is used to which is a good thing ot a bad thins, but it dose it beta.the game play is free moving and smooth, not many things get in your way;u can jump over almost every thing. The guns sound is simply ammazing, just shot a shotgun and u wull feel it so hard, the kick back they used for the guns is one of the best ever, and u dont need to aim down the sights %85 of the time like cod4,the guns are accurate enough that u can shoot freely and still kill them with a few bullets.

ihaten4glol6371d ago

I enjoyed the first Killzone, but I don't have a PS3 to try this out for myself. It is rather disappointing, though, that it hasn't been as polished as I would have liked.

Kleptic6371d ago

this is why pointless bloggers with zero credibility hurt the gaming community...

that may be your opinion now...which isn't your fault...you haven't played it, and this guy said its not up to what he expected...but I encourage you to go read the 20 other previews of this beta if you are interested in the game...not one of them had anything to say other than its the best looking console game ever made, and the gameplay might even be better than the visuals...

DeZimatoR6371d ago

HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHAHHAHA HAH

LMFAO

Sorry, this is just TOO funny, HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA

Uninmpressed by Killzone 2's visuals?!

REALLY?!

HAHAHHAHAHAHA

These people try to hard...if it was a 360 exclusive he'd be fapping over it. Sad sad sad. To this moron Stew Shearer or whatever: next time, take off your green tinted glasses before you say anything about a PS3 exclusive.

kkthxbye

stewie328876371d ago

Actually, I don't even own a 360. I love my PS3 and think it's a great gaming machine. It's nice to see though that you'd rather have someone further hype something instead of giving their honest assessment. And if you actually read the impression, you'd find that I complimented the graphics in more than a few areas, I was disappointed by a few elements, but overall, I agree it is a great looking game.

riderofpl4gues6371d ago

if you were the one that wrote this beta impression, then I must ask you; what game on the market, or even in production for any console, looks better then Killzone 2? Can you name a game? I don't think it can be done, and for that sir, you are owned. Go play resistance 2.

xhi46371d ago

poor Stewie doesn't have an answer.

shame.

His beta impression goes down with the fat prick from 1up, but even he said its the "best graphics on any console game".

So stewie, even the fat prick from 1up is more honest than you......that's saying something mate.

Sad.

ultimolu6370d ago

And stewie is rendered speechless.

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX557d ago (Edited 557d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne556d ago (Edited 556d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro557d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken556d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown557d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72557d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken556d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya556d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast557d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood557d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro786d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv72786d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_786d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga785d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos785d ago (Edited 785d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt23785d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball2000786d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin786d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole786d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix786d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel1989786d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor786d ago (Edited 786d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

786d ago
Michiel1989786d ago

Resistance was the best co-op fps I ever played after L4D2

Up there with the top tier in the industry. Love Guerrilla Games - Horizon Burning Shores is simply STUNNING.

1Victor1090d ago

Can’t wait for their next franchise

SullysCigar1090d ago

Same. They nailed it with Horizon. The trouble is I also want a new Killzone! Can't I just have it all?!

jznrpg1089d ago

I’m with you I want Horizon 3 , Killzone and new IPs

badz1491089d ago

I have yet to play Burning Shores as I just started Forbidden West (bought at launch, just unwrapped last weekend LOL) and playing on PS5.

man...I still can't believe the graphics especially now I'm playing it on my LG OLED. that graphics and with stable performance backing it up, GG really is the master of their craft!

Vengeance11381090d ago

32.7M sales in the Horizon franchise! With 8.4M coming from Forbidden West alone! Truly a hugely successful game and franchise as a whole. Looking forward to Horizon III

Shane Kim1090d ago

That's kind of a huge drop though. It's only been two games.

VersusDMC1090d ago

One year after realease HZD sold 7.6 million.

https://www.noobfeed.com/ne...

So not a drop off.

Unless you're saying a HFW should have sold as much now as HZD sold in 5 years?

Vengeance11381090d ago

It's been 3 games, this includes Call of the Mountain. Also no, its a great improvement over HZD.

solideagle1090d ago

lol you are comparing:

HZD: 28 February 2017 - May 2023 (6 years+)

HFW: 18 February 2022 - May 2023 (1 year+)

We will see if it surpass original number.

Phoenix761090d ago

@shane, 2 full main games, 2 DLC add ons, 1 VR spin off game, oh and a an official LEGO set.
Not too bad for an ip that's only been on market for 6 years

Wow, very impressive. I didn't know the numbers were so high for Forbidden West. Still playing through it myself

thesoftware7301090d ago (Edited 1090d ago )

Yooo, when I first saw that Killzone 1 footage at E3, my friends my brothers and I were like, Holy shit! When it came out, it didn't look exactly like it, but we sunk so many hours into 1 & 2.

I even liked Killzone: SF, it was a spectacle to look at, and even today it looks good. I hope they make a new one. Can you imagine how that will look, and they can get some modern FPS pointers from Bungie.

blacktiger1089d ago

thank you fps lover, I'm with you

talocaca1090d ago

Such a wonderful studio. They deserve all their success.

The Decima Engine is absolute 🔥 I'm just mad they have abandoned Killzone.

OzzY-waZZy1090d ago (Edited 1090d ago )

Kinda wish they move on from Horizon tbh.

lukasmain1090d ago

They are probably working on mutiple projects. One of them is Horizon 3, but another is a multiplaer game and probably somehting else.

Imalwaysright1090d ago

There were rumours that they were working on a Socom reboot.
