Xbox Series X - Method in its Modular Design

Xbox Series X and its parts just plug together from what we understand so far. This modular design may or may not be upgradable but we take a look at the possibilities.

They will never allow mods and they won't ever sell an upgrade. Best we will get is cheap repairs and possibly cheaper consoles when the price drops inevitably happen.

Still, an interesting idea.

ChristianReggieWait2161d ago

Probably not, but it makes for exciting modification options down the line. It's also quite impressive thinking about how their repairs and after-sales service will work with this new way of building consoles.

Hakuoro2161d ago

You're really showing how little you understand about other consoles if you think this is different. You can replace the power supply and removable media drive on almost all consoles. And all the other stuff you talk about isn't practical because of custom mountings like the heat sink.

The premise that Microsoft has done something different than past consoles or that modding will be realistic or practical is false.

ChristianReggieWait2161d ago

Thanks for your opinion Hakuoro, I seriously appreciate it 😁

If a console were going to offer some sort of modular upgrade, it wouldn't be where the user opens the system, and takes parts out, and replaces it with another part. It'd be something that has it's own casing, and its own proprietary port. This kind of thing has been done before in the past, although it was more for add-ons. When it comes to consoles, it'd have to be idiot proof, as there are a lot of idiots out there, and allowing just random parts would defeat the purpose of a console's simplicity.

anubusgold2161d ago (Edited 2161d ago )

The first xbox people modded the crap out of it what microsoft wants doesnt matter. The first xbox was a great emulator troops overseas would get them modded with like 2000 games on their hardrives having every game from Atari, Nes, super nes, genesis and all the way up to that current gen.

SpaceRanger2161d ago

Based on their history and current plans, it’ll have to be Xbox branded mods.

ChristianReggieWait2161d ago

I would've thought so. But then again, take a look as the custom market for controllers and other referrals. This kind of hardware design may open up a custom market for the console itself down the line.

PrimeVinister2161d ago

Lol definitely but it would still be cool if it actually happened.

Fishy Fingers2161d ago (Edited 2161d ago )

All the main components are soldered onto the mobo. It's not 'upgradable'. Hell, opening the case will probably void your warranty.

ChristianReggieWait2161d ago

I agree, but their are possibilities with it's modular design that could open up various option down the line.

crazyCoconuts2161d ago

Just because it looks like a big module doesn't mean it's modular.

IRetrouk2161d ago

They cant void your warranty anymore if you open up your electronics to clean and maintain them, it was never really a legal thing in the first place, and now it's something no company is allowed to do (atleast in the uk).

AuraAbjure2161d ago

That's super useful to know thank you.

anubusgold2159d ago

That never really applied in the US as well its a scare tactic but i guess you would have to sue them and that was enough of a deterrent

IRetrouk2159d ago

Yeah that's exactly how it was used over here too, glad its finally been stopped, as long as your not modding your stuff you should be able to open up your stuff to keep them in good order and clean, do it with all my electronics.

rainslacker2161d ago

Yeah, it would. And realistically, all parts for every console I've ever opened up tend to all be multiple parts that just plug into something. That's kind of true for PC's, although they also use more standardized interfaces. The main board...or sometimes more than one system board, are assembled at the factory, and the boards themselves may even be made at a different factory and sent someplace to be assembled.

AuraAbjure2161d ago

The N64 had a memory expansion bay. I bet the XSX's proprietary memory slot could function similarly.

AuraAbjure2159d ago

The more I think about it the more it makes sense that XBX's propriety slot could be used for upgrades. It could even include a ray tracing expansion to improve or offload ray racing features from the console.

Loktai2161d ago

It's not modular. The cpu is BGA and the memory is soldered SMC.... you can't upgrade it. A pc is modular this is the opposite. I doubt they understand what modular means.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio18d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing18d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit18d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing18d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9218d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
