The Outer Worlds Looks Terrible On Switch

Kotaku: "The Outer Worlds looks so bad on Switch I’m tempted to tell even people who have no other means of playing it to stay away."

Relientk772183d ago

Lol clearly the character is just not wearing their reading glasses /s

DankSinatra2183d ago

KilluwX3

Yea it’s slow, like I sad

SierraGuy2183d ago

That's what xsx textures will look like vs ps5.

kfk2183d ago

And what about the rest of the PS2-quality textures and geometry on the ground and in the distance around the sign?

That's a texture streaming thing. Even PS4 and XBox One get textures like that in games where the textures haven't loaded in yet. FFVII: remake is a recent example.

I mean, the game doesn't look great but you're embellishing by using that picture.

Darkwatchman2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

The problem is even The fully loaded textures don’t look great. Also, they take long to load to begin with on top of the Skyrim ps3 memory leak issue, where the more you play, the worse it performs and it begins showing Much earlier than Skyrim.

So as you play, textures will take longer to load up and framerate will get worse. Who’s to say at its worst that textures may never even fully load at all. This is an awful version of a brilliant game.

septemberindecember2183d ago

"The problem is even The fully loaded textures don’t look great"

If that is the problem, then show a picture of the fully loaded textures and then comment how bad they are.

"the worse it performs and it begins showing Much earlier than Skyrim."

Yes, that's also a streaming issue and it needs to be patched. Xenoblade 2 had a similar thing (though it'd at least go away if you reloaded).

Im not saying the game is an incredible port, I'm saying he is exacerbating it's graphics by using that picture with no explanation.

deleted2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

@septemberindecember Did you even watch the Digital Foundry analysis? (someone posted it above, more than an hour before your comment) Their video is exactly where this came from, it's not just a screenshot. Check it out, from the 31 sec to the 40 sec mark it looked like that until they cut away to another scene. A 1 second pop-in would be a lot more understandable..... but 9? Are you really defending a 9 second texture load? Here, see for yourself.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

I'm not here to hate on Nintendo. I legitimately considered preordering this, because the prospect of playing this fully portable is what appealed to me. I skipped it on PS4, hoping for something I can take to my inlaws. The Witcher 3 is playable and made some okay concessions as far as portable goes. This.... does not. It looks terrible. :\

Maybe they can fix some of it with updates, but they have a LONG way to go to even look acceptable. As far as looking great, I don't think that's going to happen, sadly. And I AM sad about that because I wanted it. *sigh*

septemberindecember2183d ago

@OtterX

I'm not defending any texture streaming issue. I've literally said "it needs to be patched" What I'm saying is that the screenshot is given out of context. The context should be in the post. E.g. "Yeesh, look at these texture loading issues".

deleted2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

@septemberindecember Yea, texture loading in this instance, but even final textures don't look good at all in comparison to the original. Later in DF's video, they show that same texture load wait again, and there's ANOTHER intermediary texture load, before the final texture finally appears. (which still doesn't look that good) Hopefully a patch can at least fix those texture loads, but that won't fix the low textures that exist. It's an art design problem, as DF points out. The original's is just not made for the Switch in mind, the way it processes things. Games that keep it in mind generally look much better.

I'll consider getting this when a hopeful Switch Pro comes. It would need a texture update for download. I'll definitely buy a Switch Pro day one when it hits. Here's to hoping games like this run better then! I play about 90% handheld and look forward to it.

septemberindecember2183d ago

@Otter

Yeah, I was excited for this game as well and was thinking about getting it for my Switch, but I will be waiting for a patch before I decide to pull the plug. IF they patch it, that is. The textures themselves aren't as big an issue for me as the texture streaming and actual framerate.

I do wish they would make a Switch Pro. I'd really like to play Xenoblade 2 (and Definitive) at resolutions much closer to 720p handheld (and at least 900p docked). That resolution can tank sometimes.

Kyizen2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

It's not like the texture didn't load in for 1 second. In the DF video you can see it is like that for a while, he is moving the character around and it looks like that Don't try to defend garbage.

septemberindecember2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

@Kyizen

Did I defend the texture streaming?

Short answer: no

boing12183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

But the gameplay is the same, right? I bet some are able to overlook it if it plays fine.

Spenok2183d ago

Seeing as how there are reviews as high as 8.5, I'd say yes, some are willing to overlook the crappy textures.

luckytrouble2183d ago

The Digital Foundry review recorded frame rate dips especially in combat. Like consistent low 20s and even dips below, which, you may be able to gather, make a shooting game very hard to play.

Any high ratings are people being overly forgiving because, understandably, they probably don't want to shit all over an originally unexpected third party Switch port of a game that is still somewhat relevant. A bad port is a bad port though, and everything I've seen makes this look more like an alpha version or a proof of concept.

Emme2183d ago

Well, lazy port, unable developer. Witcher,Bioshock, Doom, Wolfenstein...need I say more?

Yodasfavoritesoda2183d ago

What are you talking about. The games you just listed look like crap on the switch. If you enjoy it cool but don’t pretend games like doom on the switch are showcase titles because they are not.

DankSinatra2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

Except they are good looking, doom(despite some lower resolution textures and lower resolution in general that was helped with some updates) is damn near identical to the stronger consoles:
https://www.destructoid.com...

Hell wolfenstein 2 looks like the Xbox one version after the update, just at a lower resolution.

The switch is under powered, it’s to be expected that the games will get worse and worse looking. Eventually we won’t see anything that can run on it.

Pughski2183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

All the Nintendo fanboys will defend their lower res and low texture games like it'll make a difference

neutralgamer19922183d ago

All those games look nothing like their current gen counterparts. Switch is a under powered console and that's just a fact

It would be kind of cool if Nintendo were to release a mid gen upgrade

hulk_bash19872183d ago (Edited 2183d ago )

You do know that these are the same devs that did the Switch ports for The Bioshock Collection, Dark Souls Remastered, L.A. Noire, FFX/X-2 and FFXII right? Which were all decent ports. The more plausible case is that the Switch is just too underpowered to run this open world game. And they did the best the could with what they had.

Pughski2183d ago

So impressive being able to do ports of games that are 10+ years old
