Xbox Needs New Franchises

The next generation of systems is on the horizon, and pundits are already looking at what each company needs to do in order to become the leader of the pack. In the case of Microsoft and the Xbox Series X, it's a case of needing new exclusives and franchises in order to win the crowds.

I have to agree. Halo's story has been stretched out and filled in to the point where it's difficult to tell an original and interesting story anymore. And Gears just feels like the she game over and over again. Time for dinner fresh new characters in a fresh new universe...

They tried with a couple JRPGs in the 360 era... They let Fable fade away. Rare's bucket of IPs is still being wasted. Sunset Overdrive was great but no one bought it...

Halo, Gears, and Forza (despite their sameness) are at least consistent in their mechanics to still be fun. Halo Infinite better have a good story with the five years they've had to work on it.

State of Decay and Sea of Thieves are bad examples of new IP for them I think - they eventually became decent games but they need something new to become a hit when they're actually released instead of buggy or empty. And MS needs to actually market it!

galmi2206d ago

actually SoT launched poorly but its a lot better now

Tacoboto2206d ago (Edited 2206d ago )

Yeah - Thieves, Decay were awful at launch for their newer IPs. Gears 4 and 5 both launched in stable conditions but had microtransaction drama. Halo MCC was a generational disgrace and 5 had its own problems with transactions until they filled in the rest of the [free] content and updates.

Microsoft, for all the glam and glory of pioneering Xbox Live, doesn't have a *single* launch success story of any game this generation.

AuraAbjure2205d ago

If they made a new Fable game it would help. I'd probably buy it. They should update and incorporate Cortana's speech recognition technology so that players could talk to NPC villagers. Full blown conversations. Funny ass ones.

CaptainHenry9162206d ago (Edited 2206d ago )

I'm glad someone noticed. I been saying this for years

Godmars2902206d ago

The issue is that MS is a MP minded company where mot if not all memorable franchises have been SP.

Halo gained most of its notoriety from its SP campaign.

Tacoboto2206d ago (Edited 2206d ago )

Halo had a solid campaign but that was not its notoriety. It was and has always been the co-op, the split screen support, the pioneering they did in system link and Live support. 5 had the worst campaign but it is the first and will be the only primary Halo shooter without its staple local multiplayer.

mcstorm2205d ago

I think this is because if you look at the 360 its best selling games we're all mp games.

The best up to come out of Microsoft this gen was Horizon 2 to 4 were amazing games and added something new each time the only issue it has now is where it goes in 5 to keep it fresh.

I really enjoyed gears 5 and SoT has showen whst a game can be like when worked on with the community.

For me if you look at this gen for Sony and Microsoft it has been a really poor one in all areas.

Halo, Drive club, GTS, CD3, KZ to name a few were all poor (or poor to start with and got better)

The next gen needs more fresh ideas like we saw in the ps3/360 gen.

This gen has hass been play it safe from eveyone with 300 cod, fifa, BF and more yoy games.

NeoGamer2322206d ago

I don't know why people say XB needs more franchises. To me, they need more quality in the games they make...

Bleeding Edge, Sea of Thieves, We Happy Few, State of Decay all shipped to poor reviews.

We will see over the next few years how commtted MS is to quality games. Hellblade 2, Playground Games RPG, The Initiative's Game, Rare's Everwild all need to be AAA across the board.

Gears, Halo, Ori, Minecraft, and Forza Motorsports, and Forza Horizon are all solid franchises.

neutralgamer19922206d ago

They just need to give freedom creative freedom and resources to some of these bigger studios and let them go free and wild

Yes there will be no doubt some average games but there will be some masterpieces in there too

Could you imagine the next game from obsidian who never had the kind of resources Microsoft could provide for them and if they go wild and let their creative minds figure it out we could be in for something special

The people who are questioning them also have legit reasons to because let's be honest for three generations Microsoft has had the same strategy they come out of the gate with some new IPs and then by the middle of the generation they slow down and get ready for the next generation

they have the most powerful console and this is coming from a PlayStation fan(but I don't think power alone will make a lot of difference I think both consoles are very similar to each other in both consoles will be able to deliver very similar things like native 4K at various frame rates per second) they have some of the very talented studios with long category of great games so they should invest in some new IPs

Look there's nothing wrong with another Forza another Halo and another gears of war but if those games are given the proper rest in between releases I think more people will be excited for them and it will give the developers more ideas to think about story wise what they should do for next games

They should launch Forza and then sport it with game as service type deal with a lot of free and paid content instead of releasing sequels

One thing is both Sony and Microsoft should get a clean slate when they start next generation Yes we have prior history from both companies but we should give them a chance this generation to show us what they can do end of the day we are all gamers and we want to play awesome games

FanboySpotter2206d ago

@crazycoconuts halo's lore is crazy and interesting. Lol "stretched.. unoriginal" what. Don't know about gears. Gears 5 only felt like classic gears in act 1. Then after that it was its own thing, saying otherwise just shows you haven't played it.

crazyCoconuts2206d ago

I played all the gears (except for tactics if you count that) and all the Halos @fanboy. Yes the latest gears was open worldish but the world was barren and the story was still pretty meh. I liked it well enough but I really feel those games are running out of steam.

-Foxtrot2205d ago

The issue with Halo is they keep acting like everyone has read the novels or any other side media that wasn't the last game, so you're just expected to get it or understand the missed character development like Blue Team which was all in a book.

its not about the games its about the micro transactions, these games make more in micro-transactions then the game itself, microsoft has no replacement for theses micro-transaction heavy hitters

until xbox gamers actually stop buying Halo/Gears/Forza & stop buying all their micro-transactions its going to be more of the same

Phil Spencer says single-player games like Horizon Zero Dawn don’t have the same impact as before, games like Overwatch which recently crossed 30 million players have more of an impact in terms of sales

RamRod882206d ago (Edited 2206d ago )

Can you get off this single player nonsense already? Xbox has released single player focused games like Ori 2 and Gears Tactics this year. There are single player games in development like Wasteland 3, Psychonauts 2, Tell me why, Hellblade 2, playgrounds RPG, and large RPGs from both Inxile and Obsidian. Btw, nothing MS has released this year has microtractions in it.

sushimama2206d ago

Ori 2 and Gears Tactics? LMAO ok sure

Darkborn2206d ago

And hellblade wasn't a Microsoft title, it made money on ps4 and Microsoft bought it and let them continue the story. Ori 2 and fears tactics are a joke in comparison to big AAA single player games and wasteland 3 was started well before Microsoft bought their studio too.

RamRod882206d ago

If you played either of those games you would know they are both excellent.

Darkborn2206d ago

I'm just trying to say Microsoft isn't focused on single player experiences obviously. Most of their big single player games coming out right now and recently like the outer worlds for instance, we're started by other studios that were indie and good guy Phil bought them out to release them on Xbox to save face and pretend they are focused on single player.

RamRod882206d ago (Edited 2206d ago )

All the games I mentioned are single player focused so you're already wrong. I guess once these games release, they won't release any other single player games. Phil forced these independent studios to be acquired and is now funding their passion projects and other projects they would otherwise need crowdfunding for or some other publisher to help fund. How awful of Xbox to do🙄.

TekoIie2206d ago (Edited 2206d ago )

@darkborn

So MS buys studios to develop single player games, and now they don't count when they make them, and those that have come out don't count because you don't think their budget is big enough? Is this a joke? Are you an unintentional parody right now?

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 2206d ago
Profchaos2206d ago

That mp focused statement always hurts studios long term EA is feeling it right now and they launched Jedi fallen order with low expectation and were immediately shocked.

If a mp game launches and it's a failure it isn't just a bad game to play but a useless game where the gamers who own it can't play it because the servers are empty.

RamRod882206d ago

@darkborn what is your point about Hellblade? I don't need a history lesson. All the titles are being funded by MS including wasteland 3 and Psychonauts 2 which will allow them to be more polished and better overall games. Sorry, not every game is going to fit into your box of a AAA game.

L7CHAPEL2205d ago

dude you're trying to rationalize with a parrot, he's not interested in a conversation or the truth,
just repeating the same shit over and over again.

JesusBuiltmyHotrod2206d ago

Phil is wrong, and if he believes that then that explains MS being a distant third.

I agree...however I would love to see a new Fable next generation.

The Wood2206d ago (Edited 2206d ago )

Crimson skies

They definitely need more new franchises. That's been apparent since last gen. The thing is some of the games that may not have been great but had potential didn't get sequels. If Sony done that with uncharted we'd have no uncharted 2, arguably one of the best games of the generation

LimpTool2206d ago

Most likely when Playgrounds 2nd team is working on. Hoping to find out at the July event.

Sophisticated_Chap2206d ago

The miracle has already arrived, and his name is Phil Spencer. Legend has it, that strange objects lit up the night sky above the barn where he entered this world, on a cold winter evening. I could go into more detail, but you hear the story every year on December 25th.

rainslacker2206d ago (Edited 2206d ago )

I hear when he was born, he turned to his mother and said that his body was merely a vessel for an immortal being. He's considered a prophet among the Eighth Day Resurrected Covenant of the Holy Trinity, and their scriptures say something about all the evil in the world being purged through multiple days after the tenth day. Hence, the new system being designated the Series X. At that point, we'll all be saved, and be taken to a utopia, where we get to spend all our days with people that were so boring, they could never do anything wrong.

Sounds like fun really.

crazyCoconuts2206d ago

When God said, “Let there be light!” Phil said, “Say Please.”

caddytrek2206d ago

I don't know what is more sad... that you just said that or that anyone upvoted it.

Anyways get back to me when almighty Phil can sell a product with out lies, deception and trying to bring everyone else down.

JesusBuiltmyHotrod2206d ago

Phil was in Charge of Xbox first party when it dried up in 360 days into Xbox one. Phil is a major reason Xbox is were it is,. for better or worse. It is silly xbox fans live in an alternate reality were phil gets all the credit and never any blame for anything..Sounds like trump supporters. Phil Admitted he was fully on board with Xbox one plans at launch with Mattrick and others.

rainslacker2204d ago

@Crazy

No, you got your scriptures wrong.

God :"Let there be light"
Phil: "Wait for E3"
And there was much rejoicing

DeadSilence - have you seen how much money Xbox makes every year? Wind your neck in.

Ricegum2206d ago

Incredibly inappropriate post that.

caddytrek2206d ago

have you seen how much money Xbox makes every year?

I dunno, but I do know revenue isn't the same thing as profit.

And I also know that while Sony and Nintendo are selling 4-8x as many consoles and 4-8x as much software Microsoft is bragging about subscriptions to a subsidized service they sold for a dollar to millions of people.

L7CHAPEL2205d ago (Edited 2205d ago )

as of Friday, 5/25/2020 :
Sony Corp. $63.24
Microsoft Corp. $183.79

but of course, now the argument will be something else wont it ?
other than who is superior/ who's more successful...
let's talk about who really does business...
they need PlayStation, to do every single thing that somebody wants them to do.
sony pictures has its back against the wall, since (yet another) data breach, funny how that's an ongoing thing with their company, put its creative business allies, producers directors and major film partners in a position to where they don't really trust wanting to work with them, after a lot of things their upper executive branch had to say about different partners in that industry.
Sony televisions /electronic devices /headphones?
last time I looked LG and Samsung were trouncing them handily in pretty much every tier of the market, and budget companies like TCL and Hisense are destroying them in the lower end.
beats headphones, JBL, JVC, Bose,
etc ? crushing Sony.
And that little boy's is the reality,
Microsoft has millions (billions) of people that love what they're doing, buy their products, and are enjoying them.
so keep on squawking 🦜

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio39d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing39d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9239d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit39d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing39d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9239d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
