Bought and played them both. Honestly Trials of Mana was the much more enjoyable game for me, despite having a lower budget and bad english voice acting. As a game it was just good pure fun, and as a remake it was much more faithful to the source material. It also has much higher replay value as well.
I enjoyed FFVIIR, just not as much.
