If open world games are here to stay, how can they transcend the formula?

Sony confirms Ghost of Yōtei surpassed Ghost of Tsushima sales during a comparable launch period, boosting studio business performance.
Excellent game, my game of the year. Its open world is my favorite of any of the open worlds of the games I've played this gen.
It wasn't just profitable for Sony, it was also profitable for the grifters who made a living out of generating rage bait. I'm sure they couldn't be happier with the game's success... they can use the game's success to generate further bait.
But overall will it sell better that GoT? Why do they have to keep reminding us about the game's sales? It just wasn't as good as GoT.
A new comparison video shows Ghost of Yotei making major graphical strides over Ghost of Tsushima, with sharper visuals and improved performance.
The trailers didn’t do justice. This game looks phenomenal and having a ray tracing mode at 60fps on PS5 Pro is a treat. Much better than stutter engine 5.
Both look good but i don't see a major visual leap. At least not from those videos.
Hm nope. Absolutely not worth giving my 70$ IMO. Especially not for another girl boss revenge story. I swear man they don't know what else to write for women when they put them in these more grounded roles/games.
Absolutely buying this. Not skipping good games just to stand on some flimsy soapbox.

Featuring characters from The Last of Us, God of War, Ghost of Tsushima, Horizon Forbidden West, and more.
yeah, they're gonna overprice it so only 0.5% of the playerbase can buy it. The spiderman packs cost like 650 for 12 packs or something, on top of spiderman not fitting into mtg at all. Most of current PS characters don't fit either.
Clearing out groups of enemies is something that wont change ever... I think Witcher 3, and RDR2 have evolved OWGs intelligently without making them feel like nodes and this will too.
I do wish more open world games would be a bit smaller in scale with more to do.
I would also like to be able to turn off HUDs and be able to rely on say a journal entry and recognizable terrain to be able to find my way more often in games. Sometimes it feels like I'm just following map markers around an not really exploring anything.
Yes, they need to be made to look and feel much more lived it and much more to do.
Also, get rid of the HUD and try to create things in an inovative way like Ghost of Tsushima did with the wind for example.
One thing I hate is how UbiSoft is putting so much HUD in their games to a point where it takes me out of the game. Let the world be our HUD.
I didn't like it in FarCry3, didn't like it in Horizon, didn't like it in BoTW, didn't like it in Spiderman, didn't like it in Days Gone and I already know I don't like it in this one. The list of games that have "bandit camps" can go on and on, and honestly it's so overdone and just boring at this point. It won't stop me from enjoying everything else, but I don't see myself completing all if I don't get a really nice reward, or if there's too many. One other thing I didn't like from the demo was the outline of an enemy, that wasn't directly shown to the player, through the rooftop.
Already did thanks to The Witcher
