Sony first party usually use their own engines but maybe this means they will switch to UE5 for more of their games. Only Days gone is a sony studio game that used UE4. Every other big game had its own dedicated engine. MS games used UE for many of its games and they all looked good (Gears 4 & 5 being the best looking). With Sony onboard with UE, game development should be easier and quicker.

Funny they talk about how incredibly detailed the environments are.. The character animation looks terrible.. The hair movements and the clothes movements are everything but realistic. Feet steps do not match stairs 100%

Days Gone with Unreal engine 4 is, IMO, easily one of the best looking (in top 5) games of this generation by far on console. It is crazy what Sony Bend was able to pull off with it on the PS4 Pro. Though admittingly if my PS4 had wings, It would probably fly away while playing Days Gone. As the fans go into super-hyper-jet mode 100% whenever I play. Had to place a vibration-absorbing pad under my PS4 (meant for large generators on rooftops), otherwise the whole second floor of the house would be audibly vibrating 🤣

it's great that we are hearing more about Unreal's next jump in technology.
somewhat though disappointed that developers still have yet to scratch the surface of UE4's most advanced features. water and destruction physics. (which are from 4 years ago) plus the new hairworks, and ray tracing.
developers are just beginning to utilize tessellation (which is from almost 2 decades ago)
game development needs to be a lot faster no doubt to keep up with these new features.

as for the ps5. it displays the engine quite well. i'm pretty sure also the next gen will not be able to do all games at 60fps. as we also see here. developers will still have to make choices on what features to use and at which settings.

Dude it's a tech demo running on a early PS5 dev kit and your worried that it dropped frames 🤔 history shows that unreal engine demos gets surpassed over time especially with further optimization from developers, But ain't no way in hell you expect a game that looks like this to run at 4k 60fps with Ray tracing throw that out the window right now neither console will do that. Anyway this impresses me way more than those ray tracing demos on current gen visuals games so if some devs wanna go this route I'm all for it. We already came to the conclusion that some devs rather go the graphics heavy route and those games will be 30fps as expected and I'm not mad about it, I'm not rushing out to buy a console that plays current gen looking games at 4k 60fps if that's the case I would of just invested in a PC and called it a day, I want games that make my jaw drop and I know sony's first party team will surpass this demo don't know how long it will take but they will.

Global illumination is a form of ray tracing... at least make sure you know what you are talking about before you post.

In order for GI to work, the light "rays" must be "traced" as they bounce around the room, enabling them to light up nearby surfaces. For instance, if I put a bright red ball next to a wall and shine a spotlight on it, that light will bounce off the red ball and slightly color the wall next to it with red light.

The other benefits of ray tracing are perfect reflections and far more detailed shadows, which can blur as the object moves farther away from the light source. PBR textures benefit from ray tracing as well, since it is a form of physical rendering.

So, it is "partially raytraced". They aren't calculating reflections and shadows, or at least we don't know they are (those shadows looked damn impressive, as they said, down to the pixel level), but we are getting one of the most important factors that adds a lot to the realism of ray traced rendering, Global Illumination.

I think it's the exact opposite tbh, built to get the most outta your terraflops would be more accurate. Virtual texturing is already amazing really looking forward to check out virtual geometry.

Also finally getting convolution reverb!!!! Cant believe how far behind gaming has been in regards to audio.

Audio is fine companies got lazy. The sound in older games was far better now you just get a bunch of sound pollution . And Microsoft turned xbox live voice chat down to crap the first xbox had better voice quality.

Devs didnt get lazy, they just haven't been provided the right tools, until now.
Wait until you have convolution reverb in your games, audio from real life locations it will change everything. No point having photorealistic visuals with inaccurate audio as your brain will see (or hear) through the bullshit.

Say they took an impulse response from the Sistine chapel, when they add that response data it results in reflections that are accurate to the Sistine chapel. Do you understand how much this will aid towards tricking your brain into believing you're actually on location? A more immersive enhancement than raytracing imo.

Combining binural with convolution on vr with megascan environments would be insane. No gamer outside of a studio has experienced this so to say audio in games if fine and devs got lazy is simply just an uneducated comment.

This was a lot more interesting than Epic's normal show off tech demo trailers. Showed practical real time application in a pseudo game play scenario. Very well done, and good at describing what was happening with the changes.

Even if it wasn't shown from PS5 footage, it still would have been interesting because Unreal tends to follow console tech with each new generations. They do add on for PC as things become available, but this time of the pre-gen is where you start to see what kinds of things will be made. In the past, they've always done really beautiful tech demos, without much explanation outside of documentation or maybe a supplimental video, but the graphics quality was set to the max, which required pretty powerful rigs. Those demos were made to show the potential of the engine, not necessarily what every game would have.

yeah, the ability to stream in assets pretty much on the fly cuts out a huge bottleneck, which is basically how many assets can be stored in memory for any given scene segment.

If you think it's going to be scaled down for PC you need to think again. And between PS5 and Series X the latter has more performance in the traditional CPU and GPU metrics while the PS5 has a faster SSD and related bandwidth, so most likely you could perhaps call that fairly even, but certainly won't be the case of downscaling it.

It is pretty exciting tech, but it's 3rd party and will be powering numerous games for all major platforms.

PS5 is by no means weak especially for a console. That said the Xbox SX is a little more powerful than the PS5 but it's very minimal. In real world performance you will see little difference.

My only concern for PS5, is whether or not we will get a choice between 1080p and 60FPS or 4K and 30FPS.

Considering the main selling point of next gen is loading times and general performance, i really hope developers prioritize performance.

It bugs me because they, and this is mostly a Ubisoft dig not Microsoft, bigged up how awesome the Xbox One Series X is and when they had the chance to show this, like a dedicated third party showcase, they did nothing. So I just feel here, if there's such a big difference in power and the like then you'd think these guys would showcase the UE5 on the Xbox Series X during their third party showcase last week...but they banked on games like Assassins Creed with no gameplay and a cross gen game, like it makes little sense.

Now Ubisoft are talking about DLC and the main game hasn't even been properly revealed, why do people give them money day 1 I'll never know.

Yeah. It was real time. Normally Epic does a kind of tech demo trailer, which is usually really impressive, but tends to run on super powerful PC rigs, and likely doesn't see that kind of output through a whole generation, or at least not until that hardware becomes mainstream on PC near the end of console generations.

This was much more impressive, and really shows off some nice features that will be coming for next gen.

To be fair, putting aside that its a tech demo and not a full game, the engine itself isnt even coming out until 2021.

Its kind of harsh to blame Ubi that their cross gen game coming out in 2020 doesnt look as good as a tech demo for an engine that doesnt even come out until next year...

As for how to present how the game look...yeah thats a whole different story and Ubi definitely messed up there

Can only conclude corporate politics were involved. Even with this being multiplatform, Sony just somehow managed to keep this demo from MS's presentation, which very likely would have saved it despite all else.

It's easy to make a small section with no enemies look good, it took a while to get the details that were found in the Samaritan demo from last gen. Until we get the game in our hands, we might as well put this right next to the Series X "cgi" trailers that said in engine.

I guess 10x jump just doesn't cut it and the only reason we got the ps4 jump this gen was because how hard the ps3 was to develop for. Launch games from ps3 to ps4 are night and day. This is like a souped up xbox one x. Not kidding at all.

Even saying it wasn't "real game play" is kind of disingenuous. There may be some concessions if more was going on, but Epic had a lot going on in a good part of the segments here. The demo itself wasn't really meant to show game play like we understand it, but how the features themselves can be integrated into a game play design. Most of those things the showed can still be done without having to downgrade or completely remove those things when you start adding in things like AI or particle effects.

Epic hasn't talked about UE5 much yet, but those that have the chance to work on it already seem to think it's really streamlined and highly capable of doing more, with much less effort on the devs part.

Personally, while I really enjoyed this demo, because I looked at it as a tech demo, the environment was set up to show off those features they wanted to show off. Compare that to say the Sumaritan demo, and the latter seemed to have more life. But that demo was really set up to show off their new lighting engine which was pretty impressive for it's time. This time, it was more about environmental physics and interaction, as well as world building using engine features to handle object/texture rendering.

One thing I've noticed from this release though is that I think people finally realize what to start expecting from next gen. I feel before, people seemed to talk about it more abstractly, talking more about belief, than any quantifiable expectation.

I hope this opens the flood gates. While I'm not that impatient, gaming news has been fairly boring the past few months.

Even if they did show ACV it would look the same on all platforms. Just no loading on PS5 and XS, that's it. I don't care when they show gameplay now. If you're a current gen owner even a 1x or Pro owner it will look fantastic to you but you're a next gen there won't be any noticeable difference besides loading.

That isn't true. The PS5, Series X and PC versions will have graphics techniques not used on the current gen console versions as well as higher quality settings, not to mention higher resolutions and, for PC at least, higher framerates.

Why don't people understand? Everything scales up. As you get higher textures, way better draw distances etc it will eat resources and is a step up from previous gens. Sure, they can give you 4K 60 FPS, but you will get worse textures, worse draw distance etc. Most PC players play at 1080p and switch down their graphics just to get a high FPS. Do you want console game makers to do that? Or do you want to see better graphics etc. You can't have everything.

Gears should use their own engine to squize Xbox hardware. They used Unreal Engine because Gears of War was an Epic Games title, used to showcase Unreal Engine. But, if The Collective want to make a better Gears of War, they should use the right tools, not a general purpose base (like Naughty Dog and other first parties). My opinion, of course... nobody else needs to agree with me.

the coalition does use a modified UE4 for making gears 4 and 5. They will likely be doing the same with UE5 for Gears 6 because you know MS and Epic have a pretty good relationship regarding UE use. Gears was built on UE... to use something else seems sacrilegious.

This demo would look better on SXS when optimized to the full potential. Why? Because SXS is a more powerful system (sorry those are just facts). The game will def. load faster on the PS5 though.

Great looking games will be present on both next-gen systems. Buy the system you prefer or why not both? Enjoy all the games and have fun.

Or buy the PS5 and play 1p Xbox games on PC... Who cares games were meant to be played and enjoyed doesn't matter the system.

No the xbox is not more powerful. M$ went with old teraflops over speed and custom IOs. M$ built a off the shelf pc and Sony have gone and made a custom console. It is not a fact that m$ has stronger system they have more teraflops, Sony has a custom audio chip, faster speed way better thru put with IO and RDNA 3 features. That is just like saying a mustang with more horse power can beat a porsche with less horse power. Nope that are many many things you have to factor in. Quote me now Sony will have the stronger more advanced console. They engineered a console and and M$ threw together a strong pc!

You really think the PS5 is going to outperform gaming PCs and Series X in multiplatform games? I bet you that won't be the case. And don't bring up exclusives because there's nothing to compare them to. There's no PlayStation version of Halo and no Xbox version of Uncharted, so it's not an apples to apples comparison. It's mostly just a subjective conclusion at that point.

I think a number of Sony studios will create arguably some of the best looking games of the generation, but I think you're not being realistic if you think the PS5 will outperform Series X and, especially, the PC in general game performance.

Now this is next gen!! This is how I imagined for years how next gen should look like.
A very important aspect is quixel megascans integration in UE5. That Rebirth tech demo by Quixel is closer than ever! Look for it on yt.
I'm glad that 3rd person is in 30fps as it has that cinematic effect. I only like 60fps on shooters, sports and racers.

I'm pretty sure that the guys from Epic mentioned that Hardware RT is featured on the engine, they just wanted to show off an alternative or addition available to developers that want to build games using this awesome new tech.

They should release a tech demo for PC, to stress test it. This can easily run on current hardware. RTX 2070 Super I have can run this pretty easily and smooth no doubt. With my 3950x upgrade, no problems :D On another note Nvidia’s 30-series GPUs will have 21 tflops of performance. 4k with everything maxed running at more than 60fps, oh yes :D

Pretty exciting stuff. And it's true, the PS5 has an SSD that's faster than anything currently available for consumer PCs. To be fair though, the PS5 isn't available yet and by the time it is available there will probably be NVMe SSDs for PC that are faster. Currently I have an NVMe drive with 3.5 GB/s read speeds and I could even buy an NVMe PCIE 4.0 drive (since my X570 motherboard offers PCIE 4.0) which currently top out at 5 GB/s. The PS5 will have a raw read speed of 5.5 GB/s, so it's definitely a bit faster. However, Phison has reported they're working on a new controller that will soon allow NVMe drives to reach up to 7 GB/s.

On the other hand, Sony seems to be doing some great things with its I/O capabilities and decompression. It's definitely blazing fast in this regard and I'm very happy that they decided to do something novel with the design, instead of just the typical design with faster CPU/GPU and more memory. This, along with the fact that Microsoft is doing something similar (albeit not as fast), is going to really help gaming move forward.

It is not about the speed of the SSD. It is about the I/O. 6.5 gb/s ssd is still not fast enough to match the PS5.

Wow... this is insanely impressive 😲. Gave me goosebumps watching all the way through! And I think what this shows us more than anything is how much easier it is going to be for developers (big and small) to create amazing looking/running games for the next-gen consoles.This demonstrates not only how incredible a game can look on a next-gen console like the PS5, but also how many less steps devs need to take in order to make a game look/run this good. Very exciting stuff! I think gaming is going to witness an unprecedented boom next-gen. Just imagine small indie developers being able to belt out games like this!

Gotta hand it to Epic, I wasn't the biggest fan of the Unreal engine back in the PS3/360 days due to the PS3 version of third-party games always running/looking terrible compared to the 360 version (despite the PS3 being FAR more powerful). Lazy (or paid off) third-party devs in those days and their piss-poor PS3 ports ruined Unreal engine for me for a while. Every time I saw a game developed with it, I would think "Oh great, another poorly optimized Unreal game for the PS3 that's going to look blurry and have framerate/performance issues". But in the PS4 generation, I came to truly appreciate the engine. A game such as Days Gone, IMO, is one of the best looking games this generation (easily in the top 5 for consoles). It is mind boggling what Sony Bend was able to accomplish with Unreal Engine 4. So the thought of Days Gone 2 on Unreal engine 5 on the PS5??... yes please!!!!!

A tech demo is designed to get one hyped, and it's obviously working. But the problem I have with this are the numbers - 1440p/30. The other problem I have is with Assassins Creed: Valhalla on the X running at 4K/30. All that said, It's difficult to achieve 4K/60 and even more difficult to achieve 4K/60 (LOCKED), which is how I've been playing.
