Nintendo Switch Reportedly 'Barely' Halfway Through Its Life Cycle

Nintendo Switch should see its life cycle extend into at least 2023, according to a new investor Q&A.

ABizzel12203d ago

So basically a successor is scheduled for holiday 2023, sooner or later depending on sales.

The good news for Nintendo is the mobile market is expected to have a big performance jump and likely price drops in 2021 - 2022, as things move to 5 nm, and there is more competition with new Tegra chips from NVIDIA, AMD getting back into mobile with low wattage mobile APUs offering near XBO levels of performance, Adreno will likely be there as well in 2022 - 2023 if they continue their 20% - 30% performance improvement year over year.

So waiting until late 2023 will make a Switch 2 more affordable and as powerful as can be (near XBO performance) at a fair price of $299 - $349, for a handheld.

King_Noctis2202d ago

I was hoping for a Switch Pro. Maybe we’ll see it next year.

ABizzel12202d ago (Edited 2202d ago )

It's still possible as there are reasons and benefits for consumers, but it has to be a financial benefit for Nintendo for it to ever see the life of day (business comes first).

Performance
A Pro-Switch wouldn't be a huge change from the current models, it would be more about quality of life improvements. The performance would be anywhere from a minor clock improvement (about 5% - 10% performance boost) to at best using the Tegra X2, which would would be around 40% - 50% more performance depending on the clock speeds. This would allow more games with unstable framerates to run better (Breath of the Wild, and I assume a Pro version would launch for the sequel), allow more games to to run at 1080p docked instead of 900p, and maybe add anti-aliasing to games that were already at 1080p. So nothing huge per say, but improvements nonetheless.

Tegra X1++ (Fabrication Node) vs Tegra X2
If they go with the higher clock speed instead of going with Tegra X2, it's because more than likely they moved the system to an even small fabrication node, and the benefit with this over going with the X2, is that while you get a smaller performance boost in comparison, you do get the benefit of better power consumption meaning better battery life in handheld mode and for the Switch Lite.

Other improvements
From there other quality of life improvements would be better bluetooth support, better thumbpads, a more durable and better placed kickstand, OLED display, Ethernet port on the dock, more RAM for app support (Netflix, Hulu, etc...), bigger battery capacity, and a few other little things here and there like 64GB / 128GB of storage minimum.

But again, it's all about money, and it more than likely cost Nintendo only $150 max to make the Switch at this point and adding these features means cutting into their profits unless they raise the price. They're making around $50 per Switch lite sold, and around $120 per original, so it won't happen until there is a need, such as Zelda BotW2 being more techincally demanding, or sales slowing down.

GottaBjimmyb2202d ago (Edited 2202d ago )

This seems fine, I just wish they would release a model with a bigger screen and able to run at docked resolution (at minimum) for handheld mode. 720 on that crappy screen is a bummer.

Riku072202d ago

Interesting theory but I hope their next generation system is more powerful than Xboxone and PS4 by 2023. Even if it increases the price. Nintendo should have their next generation system be more powerful than or as powerful as a PS4 pro. That just what makes sense to me. I love Nintendo but they need to make a console powerful enough to at least handle some of the games that ps5 and Xbox series x will have. That's just my hope. I think the next generation Nintendo system will have 4K support by then so it should already be past the regular Xbox one by 2023. That just my 2 cents on it. Lol

ABizzel12202d ago

@Riku07

If it's a handheld-hybrid again, there's no way, the technology just won't be there for a 10w device to match PS4 Pro levels of performance, or even base PS4 performance at a $300 price.

For those performance levels Nintendo would have to make a home console, and at $300 they could easily exceed that with a Zen 2 CPU, and a 20CU - 24CU console (20CU PS4 Pro, 24CU XBO-X). The problem is Nintendo's home consoles have declined every generation excluding Wii (I consider Switch a handheld-hybrid), and Nintendo builds hardware to make a profit off of it almost the entire generation, which means they'd either price themselves to close to Series S / PS5 / Series X to warrant a purchase for most gamers, or the gimp the hardware and then lose a lot of 3rd party parity and still be within $100 of Series S and maybe PS5 with a price drop.

Honestly, something like this would be ideal:
6-Core/12-thread
22CU (5.07 TF), 18CU if they want to squeeze to the $299 budget
8GB GDDR6
$299 - $349

This gives them the performance they need to not be left behind by PS5 and Series X, while also being much cheaper

rlow12202d ago

Well thought out. I agree on that sentiment plus it's selling like hotcakes.

NecrumOddBoy2202d ago

Where's Metroid Prime 4? The Switch line up is continuously thin. Why does it sell so well?

SamPao2202d ago

Its new people coming in and there is a lot of content there already, and they have very high quality firstparty games so why wozldnt they wanna jump in :)

Bobertt2202d ago (Edited 2202d ago )

I think its cause its taken the place of the DS and there is no competition in the handheld department.

2202d ago
Eltortugagames2202d ago

How has the switch line up been thin? Their output of games the first three years was stellar. They miss on third pfft games yes but at the same time they have so much first party quality

King_Noctis2201d ago (Edited 2201d ago )

continuously thin? Animal Crossing NH had just been released and Xenoblade Definitive Edition, Bravely Default 2, Deadly Premonition 2, No More Heroes 3, and other third party releases like The Wonderful 101, The Outer Worlds, and Doom Eternal will also be coming.

Nintendo doesn’t rely on just one game.

Hope not, I was wanting a switch pro for better quality ports, that or I would greatly appreciate if the Alienware UFO were to release asap. I’d love having a large library of my games to play on the go but I’d like to play more than Mario games and jrpgs, which are fun but not games I personally sink a lot of hours into...

Eltortugagames2202d ago

Yeah because that’s all switch has 🙄

FlavorLav012202d ago

GTA5, Watchdogs, Batman Arkham Series, Dying Light, yada, yada, yada, I could go on for days...just saying I’d love to have a much broader library that I could enjoy on the go. The better the switch the better and broader the ports we can get. I’d love a better switch.

Neonridr2202d ago

@FlavorLav01 - first off, everyone has GTA V, do you really need it on the Switch? And considering the Wii U had Watch Dogs there is no reason why the first 2 wouldn't be able to run. The funny thing is, the Switch gets a fair number of 3rd party releases and then people like you complain about getting them because they are older. Now here you are coming up with a list of older games that should be there. Which is it?

King_Noctis2201d ago

“ GTA5, Watchdogs, Batman Arkham Series, Dying Light”

So let me get this straight, when the Switch gets port, people like you call it a “port” machine, when it doesn’t get those ports, people like you lambast it for that. So which one is it? Which other old games do you want on the Switch?

FlavorLav012201d ago

I’ve never called the switch a port machine. Besides Mario Aces and Luigi’s mansion, ports are all I play on switch! And it still needs more 3rd party support not less. All I was saying is I’d like a fuller library of 3rd party games to play on the go. What is wrong with that?

King_Noctis2201d ago

“ All I was saying is I’d like a fuller library of 3rd party games to play on the go. What is wrong with that?”

There is nothing wrong with wanting more games. But you do realize that the Switch is not powerful enough to run some third party games right? They are trying their best to get more games, and if it wasn’t for the Coronavirus situation, games like The Outer Worlds, Doom Eternal, and a couple of other third party games would have already been released on the Switch.

ParanoidFreak2202d ago

Just because the current Switch's lifecycle may go through 2023 does *not* mean a successor will not come out sooner

NotoriousWhiz2202d ago

All this talk of a successor, when the current gen Switch can't be produced fast enough to satisfy consumer demand.

Probably be using 3+ year old chips by the time it launches

Tacoboto687d ago

The 2017 Switch is based on the 2015 Tegra X1 so even if Nintendo is using technology from 2022, that alone still represents a significant improvement.

Outside_ofthe_Box687d ago

How many decades has it been since Nintendo consoles been about power?

Inverno687d ago

Should open pre-orders through the E-shop for a period before making it available through stores. And now that COVID is out the way, you can make in store preorders mandatory too. People interested wouldn't have much of an issue driving by if it meant keeping scalpers at bay for a bit.

CrimsonWing69687d ago

I mean, the problem is these a-holes have bots that eat up every sites inventory. Then they sell it on eBay for stupid prices. No matter what you try to do we’re still going to have to fight through these human pieces of sh*t to get these damn consoles at launch.

phoenixwing687d ago (Edited 687d ago )

Well I'll either see if I can get one online against bots or wait till they're saturated and buy in a brick and morter store. Waiting isn't an issue anyway I have enough games to wait out the shortage

FinalFantasyFanatic686d ago (Edited 686d ago )

I can't really understand people rushing out to buy a console at release, I'll wait a year, two years, etc... until I can walk into a store and buy one if I have to, I'm not paying scalper prices.

console wars are stupid to begin with... let alone handheld wars.

GameGeeked712d ago

Console wars, and possibly handheld wars, may seem silly, but they persist because there will always be passionate fan.

darthv72712d ago

Being passionate about the games is fine. The plastic boxes... not so much.

InUrFoxHole710d ago

Passionate is one thing. But fans went full retard

Cacabunga710d ago

Darth

You need some kind of plastic box to play them games.. and people tend to choose the best one. Console wars allows games and consoles to reach new heights.

S2Killinit710d ago

You really don't get to speak. Come on.

Ironmike710d ago (Edited 710d ago )

S2killinit u just as bad

S2Killinit710d ago (Edited 710d ago )

@Ironmike
I’m not as relentless as some on here. In fact, I only respond in kind and I got pulled into this site after seeing how some commenters were always rushing in to be the first comment and detail conversations in favor of their box. Now that their console of choice is doing badly, they preach kumbaya. Just saying.

crazyCoconuts710d ago

Is it implied that "console wars" refers to the fans warring vs. the war the platform holders are constantly in?
Obviously the platform holders have been at war and will be as long as they have to compete for our dollars.

ravens52710d ago

They're fine, as long as you know this isn't REAL. I can say how much distaste I have for MS but still have a best friend that only games on Xbox. Its not that serious .

Charlieboy333710d ago (Edited 710d ago )

Darth, do you not have preferences for certain things in life ? You know like a certain brand of phone, car, clothing, restaurant, etc.

Or are you one of those boring limp people that like to sit on the fence with everything because the 'conflict' is too much for you to handle?

There is fuckall wrong with having a console war....it keeps things fun and interesting. Well unless you're a supporter of Xbox that is.

Most of the intelligent self respecting Xbox supporters have jumped ship and all that's left now are the mouth breathing knuckle draggers.

Ironmike710d ago (Edited 710d ago )

So u resort to insults to win argument, u already lost bro .

Console wars were great when it was SNES vs Genesis. Was always a great topic in the school yard. You got the Genesis port the friend got the SNES port. Always fun to compare who was better. I always looked forward after the school week and rent a game for the SNES. Now the console wars are pretty much done and over with PS3 vs XB360 was pretty much the last of the console wars. Anything after that is pretty much one sided with almost everybody going PS4 and PS5. To me the console wars started to drop after the PS3 and XB360 ran their course. Be interesting to see the handheld wars I am in the market for a new handheld system.

GameGeeked711d ago

The SNES vs Genesis days were definitely memorable. I was lucky to have both consoles :) It's interesting to see how the focus is shifting now. Handheld wars could bring back some of that excitement. Which handheld system are you considering?

anast710d ago

I was on the Genesis side. We see how well that went.

RaiderNation710d ago

I had both but I preferred the Genesis for the sports games and I liked Sega's 6 button controller better for fighting games. That D pad was a godsend to pull off Street Fighter moves!

RaiderNation710d ago (Edited 710d ago )

The "golden age" of gaming to me was between 1995 and 2000 when it was a 3 horse race between Sony, Nintendo, and Sega. For me, there WAS no console war because I genuinely loved all 3 platforms, with each bringing something unique to the table. I miss that era.

anast710d ago

I switched to Sony day 1.

PhillyDonJawn710d ago

Anast, no one would've ever thought that about you. Totally surprising news/s

Fist4achin710d ago (Edited 710d ago )

Mortal Kombat was superior on the genesis!

FinalFantasyFanatic709d ago

It also helps that back then, they used very different hardware, today's consoles have very similar internals to each other, especially modern Playstations and Xboxes.

Handheld wars aka which system is gimped more and destroys your hands faster.

anast710d ago

I would say with the defeat of Xbox and Nintendo being it's own thing in family friendly handheld gaming, the console wars are over. For those of us that enjoy that kind of entertainment and are aware of this aspect, it was fun while it lasted.

There is no handheld war Nintendo owns the handheld landscape.

-Foxtrot710d ago

" There is no handheld war Nintendo owns the handheld landscape "

If the Xbox handheld is true I won't how it will do against Nintendo, even Sony couldn't keep up and the PSP was fantastic

RaiderNation710d ago (Edited 710d ago )

The Steamdeck has currently sold around 3 million worldwide. A handheld Xbox would be lucky to double that. As others have suggested, there IS no handheld war. Nintendo owns it.

Ironmike710d ago

The defeat of xbox my god u for real it's a console u talking g like its real war the defeat that's saddest statement I read in here

anast710d ago

"that's saddest statement I read in here"

Your not very self aware. I get it.

The Wood710d ago

The xbox as a console is a shadow of what it was during the 360 era. IF the term war offends you then I guess that you lean towards the green brand.. Just a guess mind you.. Regardless, the brand has been mismanaged for way too long and that's a key factor as to why the gappage as increased yoy between it and its closest rival.

DarXyde710d ago

In a handheld war, Nintendo cannot be beaten.

PSP was a surprisingly robust effort, and it came the closest... While doing half as well as the DS.

badz149710d ago

closest? By any metric imaginable, it was not even close. it's easy to assume the that the PSP might as well be considered a success but it sold over 80mil vs over 150mil by the DS. It was not until the failure of Wii U, Xbone and Vita did people finally realize how well the PSP actually did. before all those, it was generally called a failure by many, considering how badly the DS crushed it in sales.

NotoriousWhiz710d ago

If the PSP's 80 million isn't a success, then what is the 3DS' 75 million?
