DOOM Eternal OST Open Letter

id Software - An open letter to the incredible DOOM community.

-Foxtrot2209d ago (Edited 2209d ago )

Hmmm. Seems in depth, and they are blaming Mick 100%

I'd rather wait to hear his in depth side of things before making a decision, what he's said before were just off topic comments that didn't really dwell into it as much. Maybe the fault lies somewhere in the middle, Bethesda has not given me a reason in a long time to trust them all the way, first time round.

Bit of a grey area

Considering Bethesda has had problems in the past with preorders and the likes, I can see why they wanted to make sure that the OST actually got sent with the CE. It's very in depth and goes into great detail, which is nice, but why would they announce an OST for the CE if they hadn't even discussed it with Mick? They could have announced it at a later date as an added bonus or something if things worked out, especially if they had been having trouble getting music on time anyways. Plus, why would they then take until January of this year (especially considering it was supposed to come out last year) to come to an agreement about getting music for the OST? Doesn't make a lot of sense. Just a stupid situation that I hope they can work together with and at least give fans the true OST that they deserve, even if future projects with Mick and ID don't work out.

This whole thing can be boiled down to miscommunications. Mick didn't know that Id was going to come out with a 59 track list, Mick was expecting 12. It seems the sound engineer at Id supposedly threw a bunch of tracks together but didn't produce the sound ranges for each instrument he was supposed to, and so a lot of the tracks sounded like crap.

Mick should have known to only work on the best parts of the soundtrack and forget the rest, it seems he spent too much time working on ambient music since that was simpler at first, resulting in delays.
The thing is, if you work in anything sound related, projects are always delayed, seemingly without exception.

Everything takes longer than you think at the beginning. You can spend forever mixing tracks so it ends up sounding as good as possible with the right flow. Id is being disingenuous when they make claims that they needed the tracks on day 1 of the Collector's Edition, lest people cancel because they didn't have something they would eventually get. No one was going to cancel their CE for not getting the soundtrack on day 1, that's ridiculous.

From what I've been hearing (at least from Mick) this is surprisingly less of a Bethesda issue and more of an id issue he said he would be unlikely to work with id again but I don't think he said anything about not working with Bethesda again.

He did do the OSTs for the newer Wolfenstein games and Prey (2017) after all.

Knee jerk reactions from gamers who only heard one side of the story? There's a lot of that going around.

Marty seems like he's telling the truth here but I can't see a company like id especially if its owned by a company like Bethesda giving Mick THAT much creative freedom to extend deadlines multiple times like that.

xX1NORM1Xx2209d ago

This is gutting, seems like Mick wanted to take his time but the fact that the soundtrack was included in the CE meant he couldn't do that and id was in a tough position either face financial losses or put out something.

We know Mick likes to take his time with the soundtracks he does DOOM 2016's came out 4 months after the game.

They really should have discussed what having the soundtrack in the CE meant with Mick Gordon before committing to it or just given us a rough cut, then gave us the final product mixed by Mick layer down the line.

As it stands there is no villain to blame just a mess of contractual obligations, I understand why he would be upset that we blamed Bethesda/id but you can't do shitty things for nearly 2 years and expect the benefit of the doubt...

I found this open-letter to be a bit unnecessary and unprofessional in terms of how much detail it divulged. Marty should have kept it brief -- no more than paragraph 5. As someone who contracts well-known artists, I feel like NOBODY would EVER want to work with me again if they knew I had a reputation of slandering my collaborators.
