360 and ps3 are certainly not even .... by the end of this year we all would know better

games and personal preference. there are probably a few diehards that will buy a $300-$600 system for 1 game (halo 3/MGS4), but not very many. it's a matter of which exclusives you prefer. the extra features and services are just extra icing on the cake.

I have to agree. You have even trade offs for both consoles. 1st the DVD drives PS3 has BR and it has the most available space but has not shown and true advantages yet. The 360 has a DVD drive with less space but has not shown to be a disadvantage. 2nd the joystick PS3 has a motion sensor which has proven a better way to shoot free throws in basket ball games but not much of a innovation anywhere else. The 360 is what we are used to because of rumble so there is no loss there. I do have to say I hate the fact that the PS3 internal batteries are not replaceable too. =[ Xbox live has no competition at all and PS online is free. The features ground is too even right now.

This console generation will come down to the abilities of the CPU's and the GPU's. And the developers will need to take full advantage of them for both consoles. So I say it will be dead even until 2008. Halo 3 will take 2007 hands down.

When a Playstation Mag say it's a draw, biased as they still are, it's obviously a win for the 360.

You can't make anything else of the current situation. More games out there for the 360, more exclusives, more AAA games, overall higher rated games etc etc

Plus a premium online service.

Sony lacks in all area's. Only thing is Resistance, which is good. Not great, good.

So for sure, 360 wins now hands down. First have to see the 'potential' that people are buying the PS3 for. I'd rather go for good things now that are real, then hope for goodness in the future that may not be like Sony tells (lie) to you

People would know its a good deal, but for some reason they refuse to do that. I mean blue ray players are going for $1000 and you can get that and a PS3 for $600. I dont like the force fed blue ray but it is a good deal. But lots of people arent ready for all that and thats why its not selling well. I dont get the "force fed" bluray deal. Sony made it clear. system is running on blu ray. you want PS3 its bluray based. Dont want bluray dont buy PS3. that simple. I have both systems and agree for the most part with this article. I think that they are even right now, but as that really speaks good for the ps3. Not that they're even with games now, just overall. If the 360 has out for a year and they are even with the ps3, to me it seems the ps3 will come out the winner. The 360 will get better also, but there wont be too much more than whats already known.

The ps3 has the potential to be around long after the 360 dies and MS comes out with another console. This is the first thought i had when sony said the Cell will never use 100% of its power. Maybe there wont be a reason for a ps4. Maybe ps3 is really future proof

It'll take time, though, MS isn't standing still; they're already working on *new* ways to make Sony's life miserable.
So yes, a tie is not a bad prediction to make today, but keep in mind that all indications are that a tie is the *worst* that XBOX will get, come 2009 or thereabouts and that an outright win is no longer impossible.

As things stand, MS will do no worse than maintain their installed base and pricing lead well into 2009 and possibly 2010 and the next-generation.

Sony has two advantages over MS at this point; brand loyalty (but that's a currency they've been depleting for the last two years) and japanese nationalism. We know the japanese will never buy an american console, even with japanese games, but every day that goes by japan matters less to the global market and right now Nintendo is looking to rule Japan, anyway. So that limits PS3 japanese sales (no big boost to the installed base this time around) and forces the previously PS-only japanese developers to protect themselves by developing more for Nintendo and 360, especially if they have any kind of export ambitions.
Certainly it doesn't hurt that Capcom's two big releases for 360 have hit a million sales each (and Lost Planet got there in weeks).
There's money to be made off them 360 boxes!

As of January 07 MS has about a 9 Million box installed base lead. Judging by the (not-so) vast numbers Sony will ship to Europe for that launch, it doesn't look like they'll be within sniffing distance of 6 million by June, so lets be kind and say they'll be at 4 million when MS hits 12. That brings the gap down to 8 million.

Second half, MS will likely cut prices and let loose the Spartans of war so they'll likely do no worse than match Sony sales at retail.

Basically status quo, right?

Except that. unlike Sony, MS will have a *second*, non-retail, channel for 360 sales in the second half of 07 and going forward; the OEM STB 360 boxes to be used for IPTV. And that is a complete wildcard. That could mean as a few as a million 360's or as many as 3 million, depending on how and when they start building them. And a lot of those boxes will be going (as leases!) to people who wouldn't necessarily think of buying a 360. Its a whole new ballgame children.

Bottom line is that while Sony has work to do to catch up to where 360 is today (in games, online, and media) MS is well ahead in installed based, manufacturing cost reductions, and alternate sales and revenue channels. Just remember, this generation its not just about the hardware or even the games. MS has those but they also have other weapons in their arsenal that Sony can't match. Period. These are not things fanboys notice but they certainly help the bottom line and are more likely to influence the outcome of the so-called console war than any single game, no matter how popular.

Lets just say MS will do no worse than a tie and point out Nintendo hurts Sony more than MS. It *is* a three way race, after all. No wonder Gates is happy with 360 as it stands.

i never said that ps3 would win by the end of a year......what i said was that after the end of 2007 it would be conclusive as to whoever have the edge, it could even be nintendo......or 360 by a long margin....

What im stating is "they made it pretty clear there is no PS3 without Blu-ray" Bluray makes the PS3 clock go around. To offer it without blu ray would defy the purpose in a way. I dont think they force fed costumers as much as they more likely have taken up the responsibilty to make sure blu ray is successful or they are how do you put it "screwed royally". So I guess you can say they took a gamble more than they say the force fed. Its not all one sided. People forget at the end of the day "WE" are the consumers "WE" have the final word. "WE" make the purchase.

Why would anyone but the PS3 for Resistance, that game looks so awful. Buy a PS3 and Motorstorm than you will be happy. Shadowgamer, Sony never invented the Hard Drive, it was already being used in Computers a long time before and even then it never came into the European version of the PS2. Theres already something called the webcam so did Sony copy the webcam and improve it? Did Sony copy the PC online service and make it worse? Ddid Sony copy the DVD playback which was in DVD players before? Sony, MS and Nintendo all copied each other, its a part of life and you can never claim it as your own unless you made it better, you changed something to make it better etc.

Sony is way way behind, there is no draw for now. that's wishful sony thinkingf, I mean common sence tells us that. If your a sony game lover then ps3 is best for you and if your an Xbox 360 game lover then Xbox 360 is best, ....but, on a scale of where hardware and software and it's functionality is at, then it's no contest at all. Xbox 360 is bleems ahead for now, beginning 2008 will be the true test for all 3 consoles. Xmas 2007 will begin to set the true pace of things, but for now , now way and you know it.

In the end it comes down to the games you prefer.

PS3 isn't even on the same level as an media Home entertainment divice. IPTV, Live Anywhere, XNA, Tons of Next-gen Social titles which are very popular right now(online capable). I agree saving a little face is better than none(PS3 & 360 even?).

As with apples and oranges, you'll never have an objective comparison on every point because they're different products. Some will tout PS3's look, built in functionality and storage flexibility. Xbox 360 advocates put community and Live on a pedestal over Sony's online network. Major differences aside, when comparing what both are capable of doing and claim to do well, which is play video games, there is very little difference. I'm confident that a majority of people out there bought them for that main reason.

These comparisons are done to death, and even the definition of "winning" is ambiguous. Is it to process the most gigaflops? To have the most exclusive titles? To make the most money? To have the prettiest shape?

Or was it to provide the most entertainment?

When people talk about the 360 they talk about the AAA games, awesome online service. The PS3....well it has blu-ray.

I love how everyone is taking a draw to mean anything but a draw. It means they are equal. For the fanboys who take that as a slight towards either system I say just relax. Dependant upon what side of the fence you sit on it could mean many things but its all just a matter of perspective. Both Sony and M$ have been saying their machine is superior, this is just one (surprisingly unbiased oppinion) suggesting neither is. BooHoo or hooray for both..? Without the games both are just incredibly overpriced paper-weights anyway. Yes, I'm aware the ps3 plays blu-ray discs, I've also never heard anyone say "well with all these great blu-ray titles coming out I HAVE to get my ps3!" Either way, good job to both for building machines so technically capable. I'm eager to see what both will do throughout the next year.

2. Both of these systems have new content and capabilities coming out in the future, so things can change. If Blu-Ray blows HD-DVD out of the water (which is not likely), then including it in every PS3 will look like genius. Right now, because of what it adds to the PS3's cost, it could be considered and achille's heel. Likewise, when IPTV, XNA, and live anywhere are fully implemented, with all the ramifications of these programs, they might boost 360 to a whole new level that PS3 can't match.

3. Content is king, Whether it is Live arcade games, downloadable HD video, or GAMES. Both PS3 and 360 will have all of these types of features (plus music, connectivity, etc.) So WHO provides WHAT to their users, and the soonest, will make MOST of the difference. Right now, Sony is limping a little behind-- losing 1080p "exclusivity," being the only system capable of showing HD movies "out of the box"-- (you can download HD movies from live, store them on the 360's harddrive, and watch them that way WITHOUT buying the HD-DVD add-on), losing exclusive games (GTA IV, Assassins Creed, VF, etc.), media delivery, and the PSN being as good as Live, but for free (Not even close, yet, Sony)

4. This "battle" is not over. Some people think that Christmas '07 will tell the tale, I doubt it very much. By launching first, Microsoft can price-drop quicker, and has a HUGE game in Halo 3 in the pipeline. Sony may very well sell lots of systems if Lair, Motorstorm, DMC4 and Heavenly Sword are all they are claimed to be, even at $600.00

5. Don't forget the Wii. It is STILL selling like crazy, even while shiny, new PS3's sit on the shelf and 360 sales have leveled off or even declined. NO ONE really thought the Wii would do this well, or that at least the novelty would wear off, eventually. But with Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Brothers out by the end of the year, they could easily distance themselves from PS3 and catch or surpass 360 in systems sold, which would lead to even more devs. making games for Wii, etc.

I love being able to point out that PS3 has a little pie on its face, and that so far, the 360 is doing better than a lot of people expected, because I have a 360 and see no need to buy a PS3.... Yet. But I have an Xbox and PS2, and played the heck out of both, so if the exclusive games are their for the PS3, eventually I will get one of them, too, and probably a Wii for the kids. I love video games of all kinds and everything about them, even these lovely debates on the interwebs. But lets be honest, people, all three systems offer something to somebody, so let the people buy what they want and play what they want-- when 3 huge companies are throwing THEIR money at game developers, and spending it on hardware and features and better games, we, the consumers, ALL OF US, win!

They made valid points, and haven't been afraid to criticize Sony's faults in the past. It'd be great if other magazines were as unbiased as PSM.

We're only two months into the Playstation's life cycle, so it's obvious that they didn't have much to base their comparisons off of. From the looks of it though, Playstation 3 is going to have the advantage by the end of this year. Having superior hardware is great, but the games that are planned for the coming months are actually starting to take advantage of that power much faster than what happened on the PS2.

If the new footage of Lair is anything to go by, then we're in for a hell of a treat.

I wouldn't call it a draw tho'...I would call it a slaughter! The 360 is still outselling the ps3! 17 games have reached the million sale mark with more big sellers coming this year in Crackdown, Mass Effect, Blue Dragon, Bioshock, Forza 2, Halo3, etc... Nothing on the ps3 in 2007 brings the excitement as GOW! So calling it a draw is a stretch!

The 360 has done so much since its birth! The ps3 hasn't done anything but spit out one good game in Resistance! It looks like the only good news I ever see on the ps3 is about the blue ray player and movies. I prefer the games! Give me the games baby!!!

i'd rather have a free ps3 network that most of the best features for free than end up paying for what? not much.... the most important part is being able to play online. Both the 360 and PS3 are equal in my eyes. Both have really fun and cool games coming out, and that's all that matters. 360 has Halo3, PS3 has Killzone PS3, and now both are getting UT3!!! This is just great!!!!

PSM is an unbiased news source that happens to be in the Sony camp. I subscribe. They believe, like IGN and 1UP, that the two formats are about equal right now...but they also think it will surpass the 360 in all regions by the end of 2007.

The article just says how they both have their strongpoints, how the PS3 will, within the next year, have better looking games, how Sony has made a few mistakes...and need to admit it, and how much great content is coming to both systems this year...the exclusives will be amazing. Sony has over 100 titles being worked on RIGHT NOW...and those are FIRST PARTY! MS has...Halo 3...and the rest are basically 2nd or 3rd parties...

Sony has always been a company that looks to the future and not the now. That's their strong point...and I think Nintendo's starting to think like they are...but then again...i'm doubting the whole "new HD system in 2-3 years" theory.

The only other company that thinks this far into the future is Apple...which was on top until Steve Jobs was fired. Then, Bill pretty much KILLED Apple. Then, they hired Steve again...and Apple's looking better than ever...especially since everyone knows Vista sux now...

are going to have a photo finish when it comes to specs but this won't matter. The only thing that matters is how developers take advantage of the power and use it to compete with each other. Which is the better console in specs? Thats up to the devs.

The PS3 has an uphill battle on a very steep hill if they think they are going to win against the Xbox 360 this generation. Win or not as long as there is competition everyone wins Sony and Microsoft fanboy alike.

I don't believe that HD-DVD is better than Blu-Ray because the professionals overwhelming approve and chose Blu-Ray over HD-DVD, so I can see that it's a quality over price battle, not a HD-DVD is better, and cheaper argurment. I'll take the professionals over some poster on a site any day.

I don't believe the xbox is better than the PS3 for many reasons:

as a video player, I have to buy an attachment to access the best functions, which puts the price of the xbox near the price of the cheaper PS3, on top of the cooler for the xbox, which brings it over the price of the cheaper, by the way contradicts each other because the cooler sounds like a hair dryer so I have to bear annoying sounds every time I want to play a HD-DVD, versus NO sound for my PS3, other than a very light fan hum that goes away shortly after I turn on my system. The PS3 is clean, it's all on one system, it's not in the respect of a video player a very expensive game system, it's like a FREE game system with $400 coupon for a Blu-Ray disc player.

With the PS3, having the blu-ray gives it DOUBLE the disk size, so expect a high quality game to have more than DOUBLE THE LENGTH given it's equally high quality. Not bad, having twelve hours of game play versus Gears five hours and Lost Planet's approximate of eight or possibly less, especially being a launch title; and Resistance has an insane amount of online players (fourty). Another thing is that more and more pc programmers will program for the PS3 given it's cell processor design: it's a multicore, and if you "can" program the cell processor, you'll see that you "can" program the quad-core on your PC. it's similar in design, and eventually all programming will be closer to programming on the cell than any other system. The cell is already being used in supercomputers which means some of the best programmers in the world already have experience making systems and engines using the cell processor. The cell processor runs the FASTEST of all the gaming chips.

i dont have a fan hooked up to mine and its a launch console. and have not had any problme with mine. so you think no ps3's are breaking just search for videos youll find em. the 360 may have had some problems, i dont know mine is fine and i know of no one personally who had one "melt" on them. but i know of no one whos ps3 has melted either. wait i dont know anyone who ownes one now that i think about it.

Resistance has a better storyline, more enemies, non-linear gameplay, a HUGE draw distance, amazing physics, and fantastic lighting...how can you not compare that to gears? The only thing next-gen about Gears is the graphics. Don't get me wrong...it's one of the BEST games in years, but it could be done on any other system...even a freakin' DS...the 360's engine hasn't proven that it can OUT PERFORM the PS3 yet... As far as graphics go...have you seen LAIR??? Epic KNOWS how to take a game and make it more fun than ANYTHING in the genre. Unreal is STILL the best shooter on any platform. When Unreal III comes out...Halo 3 doesn't stand a chance. It will lose to another game on the same console...and i hope for my sake that it does, because Halo's too freaking slow for me. It's not strategic or fast...and it pisses me off...

Epic adds a fun-factor to EVERYTHING! It's just their trademark. I think we're gonna see an Epic vs. Id vs. Valve vs. Crytek MASSIVE BATTLE here pretty soon. Even if they were a tie, it would still show how the PS3 fails. The PS3 had a year to be better than the 360, and it's the same, if not worse than the 360.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.
