the heat-sink sandwiches the chip broad. apparently the pipes go through the board to increase heat venting and slow heat stacking on the board.

IRetrouk2092d ago

Yeah, from the description the design allows much more options for component placement, I think it means we wont be seeing a tower design, I did think we were getting something closer to the dev kit but now not sure after the controller reveal looked so different from those patents that we seen.

GamerRN2091d ago

So now next gen is all about SSD speed and heatsinks? Man, this is going to be an interesting generation lol

Kyizen2091d ago

You do know that those features are needes only if speed and power of next gen jas significantly increaed to need those innovations.

IRetrouk2091d ago (Edited 2091d ago )

Gamer, where did you get that from any of the comments you are replying to?... Oh you didnt...

Next gen is about the brand new gpus, cpus, ssds and how they all work together(including internals like the heatsink) at making the devs lives easier while also giving them way more scope to make us better games.

The heatsink has been designed differently, allowing much more room for layout possibilities, it's part of the overall design of the system so I dont get why it cant be talked about.

Didnt the xbox get articles about its cooling solution?
Didnt the xbox also have articles about its ssd?
and the velocity architecture?
What about the phill said articles?
Almost every feature of these consoles have been discussed, I dont see the issue.

Kyizen the ps5 chips run very high clocks, it will produce a lot of heat and will need a cooling solution that matches that, believe me, its needed.

Unspoken2091d ago

Hey they are now focusing on all the areas they were weak; controller, acoustics/heat dissipation, sound processing.

yoshatabi2090d ago

@GamerRN you make absolutely no sense

Realms2090d ago (Edited 2090d ago )

@GamerRN

Salty much? Some people are never happy, you seem upset that more people are interested in the PS5. Sony has put the work in to be in this position and until MS shows new games the xseries isn't even worth talking about to me. FYI for all you xbots claiming the power difference being so important, need I remind you the Switch outsold the xbox x. I suggest you fall back and STFU before claiming victory over next gen without MS doing nothing to deserve the benefit of doubt. Since they can't even manage to produce quality AAA games consistently enough to have faith in them.

How about we start having the web hyped about something that isn't a rumor, a patent, speculation or anonymous "opinons" about the PS5? No, seriously.

IRetrouk2091d ago (Edited 2091d ago )

There are plenty of articles about the xbox, what phill says etc, if you dont like these articles click on those ones instead, and if you dont like those then there are always the nintendo or pc articles...🤷‍♂️

Larrysweet2091d ago

I mean up u can select xbox news only

Aquanox2090d ago

Why would I? I want to see PS5 news. Real news. I'm hyped about next gen.

Wulfer2092d ago

Between running a max performance and trying to dissipate heat, Sony sure have set themselves up for a RROD scenario.

IRetrouk2092d ago

Which is why they designed a new cooling solution...... plus sony would have to release the ps5 KNOWING the console was going to overheat to be considered a rrod like situation.....

blackblades2091d ago

Why bother commenting to a troll bruh?

IRetrouk2091d ago

I dont keep track of who's trolling/is a troll, I just post, comment and reply to stuff🤷‍♂️

GamerRN2091d ago

Well, if it releases and overheats, based on rumors, it would be apparent that they knew it would...

IRetrouk2091d ago

You mean based on that one rumor? spread well after cerny had already talked about high clocks causing more heat and stating they had a new cooling solution that would deal with it and would talk about it during the teardown? Yeah I'm not buying it... the high clocks were planned from the start, cerny knew he would have to deal with excess heat, I would bet my house, car and lifetime earnings on that rumor being complete bs, infact, throw in my soul too.

GamerRN2091d ago

I mean based on the rumors and videos floating around that devs think it's a major issue

IRetrouk2091d ago

There are no devs that say its overheating or think it's an issue, the rumor is from one person on YouTube or facebook, cant remember which, it then was ran with by a lot of YouTube fan channels🤷‍♂️ research the rumor yourself and let me know if you find one credible source that states what you say.

LordJamar2091d ago

The fact they had to create a whole new cooking solutions tells volumes

IRetrouk2091d ago

🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

Kribwalker2091d ago (Edited 2091d ago )

based on the fact they are having to run consistently in boost mode to try to up the processor and gpu since they originally were underpowered. You can’t run something consistently at a higher frequency and not expect it to over heat, which is why they’ve had to put so much more time into the cooling solution

MajorLazer2091d ago

There won't be another RROD situation from any of the companies. Lessons have been learned

sinspirit2090d ago

@Kribwalker3h

- "since they originally were underpowered."

Originally underpowered based on?

- “You can’t run something consistently at a higher frequency and not expect it to over heat“

Yes, you can. If you've done testing and found the sweet spot for high yield, stability, and manageable temperatures. Then you can. It's simple. We've seen RDNA1 cards reach close to these clocks. I'm pretty sure that custom chips from top hardware engineers working in tandem can reach what they were designed and confirmed to reach.

They most certainly can raise the frequency higher and simply stop when undesirable results are reached. That's like expecting a race car driver not to use the brake cause he says he's faster than you.

- "which is why they’ve had to put so much more time into the cooling solution"

This patent is more for allowing a different form factor and saving space. The top of mobo's can get a little crowded and some parts are raised up. With this, they can shave a couple mm's off the thickness of the system or cram more into it. Heat pipes are extremely efficient. They could have always made a larger heatsink which is less complex and just as effective.

caddytrek2092d ago (Edited 2092d ago )

Ah, you know that more compute units use more energy and that heat is the byproduct of energy use right?

I.E. If you have 10 energy you can power a larger die or run a smaller die faster and it will create the same 10 units of heat.

I_am_Batman2091d ago

You are ignoring power efficiency. The higher the clock frequency, the lower the power efficiency tends to get. We don't know the efficiency curve of RDNA 2, but the fact that PS5 clocks are far beyond the clocks of the Xbox series X suggests that Sony are really pushing the limits of the architecture in a console design.

Also having the same amount of energy in a smaller area will result in a hotter chip. Thermal flux is defined as the heat-flow density per unit of area per unit of time. If you shrink the area you need to increase the heat-flow density to achieve the same thermal flux. That's pretty hard to do, since cooling solutions are already fairly optimized in that regard. There is some room for improvement and the biggest bottleneck is usually the thermal paste.

There are a lot of potential solutions to these problems, but most of them are fairly expensive. I'm very curious to see what kind of cooling solution they'll end up going for.

cabbitwithscissors2091d ago

@I_am_Batman Well that is understandable, but you're ignoring the fact that the power usage for the PS5 is fixed constant and will rarely if ever exceed this limit, unlike the XSX which will pull more power from the power supply if needed and this will cause the fans to spin up. The PS5 power supply is designed in to the specification and that is taking in to consideration the higher clocks that the CPU/GPU is working at. You're under the assumption that the system cannot dissipate the heat generated within its set parameters. You're working on the wrong assumption.
I'm sure Sony knows what they are doing for the new cooling system. Cerny also stated that their cooling system is revolutionary, unlike the cooling systems we currently have in use today, so let's just wait and see.

caddytrek2091d ago (Edited 2091d ago )

I_am_Batman

I'm not ignoring power efficiency at all.

This is a very basic comment. It uses more power to run more transistors Or you can run less transistors faster. It's simple physics

but the fact that PS5 clocks are far beyond the clocks of the Xbox series X suggests that Sony are really pushing the limits of the architecture in a console design.

What are you basing that on? xbox is not the "standard" by which anything is judged. The the quality of silicon and the manufacturing process is the determining factor on what the limits of the chip are.

Whats going on here is people are trying to make an incorrect argument that somehow PS5 is going to overheat based on absolutely nothing and using reasoning that has no basis in reality.

lazyboyblue2091d ago

@I_am_Batman They shoulda gone with that dope WayneTech am I right?

2091d ago
2091d ago
I_am_Batman2090d ago (Edited 2090d ago )

@cabbitwithscissors: Your reply is completely unrelated to anything I've said. I haven't made any assumptions about the effectiveness of Sony's cooling solution whatsoever. Maybe try to actually read what's been said instead of completely strawmanning my comment. I'm merely stating the obvious challenges Sony has to overcome to cool the PS5 efficiently.

@caddytrek: What's the purpose of your original comment then? It reads like you are creating a false equivalency between a large/slow die and a small/fast die when it comes to heat dissipation. I'm just pointing out why thermodynamics favor the larger and slower die, since you haven't made any mention of power efficiency and the crucial role die area plays in the equation. All that means is that Sony needs a much more efficient cooling solution.

I'm basing my claim that Sony is pushing RDNA2 to the limits on many things. First of all Mark Cerny implied it himself in his talk about PS5's architecture ("In fact we have to cap the GPU frequency at 2.23 GHz so that we can guarantee that the on-chip logic operates properly").

Another obvious reason for this assumption is that both the PS5 and the Xbox Series X are using the same µarchitecture. Raising the clockspeed is by far the most direct way to increase the performance of the chip so if Sony is not pushing the architecture, what the heck are Microsoft doing clocking the Series X so low then? You are right to point out that the silicon quality plays a role in power efficiency and maximum clockspeeds (although they don't necessarily go hand in hand), but unless you have a plausible resoning why Sony is getting much better silicon then MS it's a moot point in the comparison.

And to your last point: I completely agree that some people are jumping to conclusions based on nothing more than speculation. But this goes for both sides of the issue. One side is certain the PS5 will overheat. The other side is certain it won't be a problem. I am sick and tired of these stupid console wars where people are discouraged from asking legitemate questions about a company they've supported for more than 2 decades because a small minority of people can't see anything between black and white.

crazyCoconuts2092d ago

I've had tons of consumer devices over there years and nothing I've seen has compared to the RROD scenario. I think that's only something Microsoft could pull off. I returned my 360 5 times. I'm happy that after escalating to managers MS paid for the replacements every time but geez, that was an incredible cluster.

Smclaren19852091d ago

Same here went through 5 consoles back in the day lol all because they rushed the console out the door to get infront of sony It was a great console , but it was made out of cheap crap lol they had 3 diff companies manufacturing them lol Sony’s consoles have and always will be solid

ToxicSushi2091d ago

Both my 2 Fat PS3’s died of the YROD. Sony refused to repair w/o charging me. Heat dissipation is a valid concern for all three platforms including a docked switch.

2090d ago
sinspirit2090d ago (Edited 2090d ago )

@ToxicSushi

Please tell me you haven't had a Switch overheat on you, cause that would be a pretty simple reasoning, along with two PS3's, that they're not in a good environment to exhaust heat and pull in cool air.

Nothing compares to over half of 360's having this problem. Anecdote isn't comparable.

FinalFantasyFanatic2090d ago

@ToxicSushi / @sinspirit,

I've never known the Switch to get overly hot, it's not exactly high end hardware in there, then again, I never had the Joycon drift or the PS4 controller issues people claim to have either.

All of my consoles have lived a long life, the PSone died on me when the PS3 came out, but I have 2 PS2 still in good working order. My PS3 controller is dead as a tact, won't charge or connect (I don't know where the other one is, I think my sister's partner borrowed it and I never saw it again, it's rare for me to lose console parts/games).

I don't know anyone who has had the YLOD, but pretty much all of my friends have had the RROD though.

MasterCornholio2092d ago

Actually a good cooling system will prevent RROD.

Why do you think that Sony went with something new instead of something more traditional?

Profchaos2091d ago

Wasn't rrod caused by faulty xclamps as their was a slight bend to the system.

2090d ago
ElementX2091d ago

I'm curious how user installed SSDs will work. If the temperature gets too high, they'll throttle to cool down, lowering performance.

IRetrouk2091d ago

I'm sure that's been considered in part of the design, cerny mentioned a bay, if they have designed a bay then they would surly have designed a way for that bay to be cooled, it's a good question though and one I hope is answered during the tear down.

RazzerRedux2091d ago

Probably the "certified" SSDs will have to have heatsinks built on or the bay itself will incorporate the heat sink and the bay could have a dedicated small fan.

FinalFantasyFanatic2090d ago

I'd be very surprised if they weren't at least using a decent passive heatsink, or a heatsink/fan combo.

Thundercat772091d ago

Says a ramdon internet forum dweller who knows nothing about this stuff.

2091d ago
Ausbo2091d ago

How can you say that. We haven’t even see the console

Starman692091d ago

You saying mark Cerney and sony have less knowledge on this than yourself? 🤣

Edito2091d ago

They didn't do that in 25 years... They won't do it now...

RosweeSon2091d ago

Except they not stupid enough to actually launch that on the public.

fiveby92091d ago

You have no idea what you are talking about.

SurgicalMenace2091d ago

It's strange just how much gloom and doom Sony is facing amid the launch of the PS5. So many people wishing for their demise, for what? They've clearly earned their position in the industry by delivering stellar product more consecutively than any other company in history.

I could understand if they've been coasting by with empty promise after empty promise. That has not been the case from PS1 to now, so why all the wishes of their downfall? Did they personally do something to each of you? Does their presence keep you from supporting what console you'd prefer? I'd say, if you prefer Xbox or Nintendo, spend more time playing them and less time focused on Sony.

To wish ill of a company is to say that 110 million people going without what they clearly enjoy is somehow okay with some of you. Crazy when you think about it. Sorry that your preference is not the favorite, but it doesn't mean it's not good for yourselves.

FinalFantasyFanatic2090d ago

And people say that N4G is full of nothing but Sony fanbois (never mind the large number of articles over the years trying to undermine the PS4).

waverider2091d ago

Dude, are talking about a hardware company not a software company... There is a Huge diference....

ps5fanboy2091d ago

By designing a good heat sink solution?? Tried and tested at full capacity , with limited air flow ??

jukins2091d ago

Lol heat and noise are one of the main factors in the ps5 design. I'm sure they've tested a ton of solutions no one wants a repeat of 360 rrod

KwietStorm_BLM2091d ago

I don't think even you understand what you just said.

Donnie812091d ago

Don’t worry the ps5 doesn’t run at max performance like ever

RazzerRedux2091d ago

"Between running a max performance and trying to dissipate heat, Sony sure have set themselves up for a RROD scenario."

lol.....is that what you said when MS unveiled the "vapor chamber" for Xbox One X? Companies are constantly trying to find better ways have dealing with heat. But when Sony does it......it means bad things?

sigh...fanboy logic.

_dangerclose_2090d ago

That's more about certain people hoping for that then there is any truth to it so just stop already.

madpuppy2090d ago

That tells you how popular Playstation is and how a homerun the PS5 is going to be.

So why doesn't the XSX reveal have twice as many views as those? Plus I don't see many reacting to this heatsink nearly as much as the XSX reveal or even the DS reveal. So again Delusional 🥴

Its almost as if the xbox series x doesnt exist, hmmmmmm. Lol

lazyboyblue2091d ago

99% agree. But..... I do remember the same passion and expectancy for the Xbox one PRIOR to that reveal. Is it probable that Sony could drop the ball so hard when they properly reveal the PS5? Most likely not. But never say never.

phoenixwing2091d ago

the only way they could lose is if they release it with that creepy companion ai robot that sits on the couch watching you x.x

--Onilink--2091d ago

It depends on what you mean by more attention. If you are using N4G as a metric of any sort, you are pretty deluded. This site has had a big big majority of PS fans for quite a while now. Other than that, you keep talking as if no one was reporting anything regarding xbox, when even comments on twitter from phil spencer usually draw a lot of articles.

Then again, why even be so biased towards any particular console in the first place? Just buy whatever you like (be it PS5, SX, Switch or all of them) and simply enjoy them for what they are

DeadManMMX2091d ago

Yes because of Sony's hardcore fan base. Who are living online in an echo chamber like all hardcore fan bases. All of us on these sites basically. Joe Average doesn't give a sheet about Sony's heat sink he just want's their games and their price. Never amount our hype with the hype of the average consumer.

danny8182091d ago
