Introducing a New Interactive Element: In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items)

To help inform consumers of what's offered in a game the ESRB will now begin assigning a new Interactive Element: In-Game Purchases (Includes Random Items).

Wow congratulations esrb, what a huge effort to protect customers from predatory practices. Round of applause. About as useful as the world health organisation

Sadly, many parents don't even care what the ESRB is for a game. Their bratty kid wants it... They'll buy it

Nice and barely noticeable...

This new «Interactive Elements» add-on is useless, because it «do not influence the rating assignment of a product» and doesn't show you how much those purchases affect the game. There's a huge difference between "i can buy only 1 skin with real money in-game" and "every weapon, skin, armor, attachments, maps, skill points, resources even in-game money are up for sale with real money", but this new add-on doesn't show that.

And because it doesn't affect the rating, it will lead to even more confusion. Parents will not read or pay attention to this small text box, all they care about is that big rating icon. And they would probably think that this game is for everyone, so microtransactions are probably minimal and they'll probably be completely wrong.

But i guess, that was their original intention, to show that we kind of care, but we do not, actually, all they probably want is to cover their asses with «we have this notice on the box, you should've read it, we wouldn't give you your money (that your kid wasted on "random items") back».

P. S.: Not to mention, it took they years to add this useless thing.

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
