The Microphone in PS5's DualSense Controller Will Identify Users and Eliminate Crosstalk

By including a microphone as part of the PlayStation 5’s new DualSense controller, Sony is making voice chat easier than it’s ever been before. Of course, with a low barrier for entry comes the potential for irritation, as gamers can be known to play loud music and have personal conversations in the lobbies of online titles.

Fortunately, the Japanese giant has a solution which will at least help to eliminate some background noise.

While it’s somewhat annoying, everyone having a mic standard will bring multiplayer games back to life.

NewMonday2232d ago

Now that a mic is standard and always there voice can be an effective input method, especially since voice recognition software has advanced in recent years.

While playing, instead of pausing and scrolling through a menu or going through a weapons wheel you can just say "shotgun" and it would switch. or instead of punching a sequence of buttons you can just say "Khami hami ha!" and then BOOM!.

WickedLester2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

Thats a good point! I didn't think of the built in mic as being used as an actual game mechanic! Imagine playing an RPG where during a battle you can "speak" a specific summon by name and your character uses it on screen! Or how about a SOCOM game where you could command a whole squadron by speaking out specific commands. Or how about Madden? Imagine being able to literally "call" the audible at the line of scrimmage!
That would be awesome!

PyroMessiah862232d ago

All stuff that MS did with Kinect. It's nothing new.

Kornholic2232d ago

Talking to your game sounds like a very unappealing concept to me.

DaReapa2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

@WickedLester
Voice command in games has been implemented before, including all you've mentioned. Games like Endwar from last gen can be played just about entirely by using just your voice.

rainslacker2231d ago

That's a pretty good use for voice commands. Sadly, I see many random people come up with these great ideas that never seem to see the light of day as devs don't implement them.

I personally don't like talking to my games, but weapon switching in games with more than two weapons is always a nuissance for me because I can never remember where I put which gun, or they have disruptive weapon wheels you have to bring up which disrupts the action.

VariantAEC2231d ago

@PyroMessiah86
This was done on EyeToy and the PlayStation Eye (PS3's camera) in various games. Additionally third parties did this without using a camera attachment at all. One of those Tom Clancy games comes to mind in which players barked commands to AI companions throgh a headset mic. And yes this worked on PS3 too! PSP also has a game called EyePet. So you're right it is nothing new this was done before as a gimmick in many other games since PS2. Man PS2 did a lot!

umair_s512231d ago

My bet is ps5 will look like Alienware Aurora
https://www.dell.com/en-ca/...

KillBill2231d ago

Rainbow Six had a control option where you could give squad commands via mic chat.

Zeref2231d ago

Devs can do that today if they want to. Everyone has a headset with a mic.

StormSnooper2230d ago

It will definitely help with people communicating more in multiplayer and leads to a better sense of community

Wonder if you can turn the Mic off. Are people still concerned about a mic that is always listening?

AspiringProGenji2232d ago

Only people trying to link that to the kinect blunders are concerned about that. Any sane person shouldn’t be. And yes, you can turn it off, like any mic ever

2232d ago
AnubisG2232d ago

You can't. That thing will always be listening.

Skate-AK2232d ago

Tape it or something. I am sure there is some way to block sound from entering in the first place.

IRetrouk2232d ago

Except it has a mute button, and an option to plug in headsets, which you can also mute.

GTgamer2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

@echo
That goes for fanbases stop acting like one is above the other 🙄 but hey if you worried about your controller listening to you I think suggest destroying your cell phone too 😂😂😂

AmUnRa2232d ago

Yes you can turn the mic of, there is a button right under the mic, push the button mic is out, job done, nobody is hearing you...not even Sony😉

Lobbies are quiet because people are playing in party chats not due to lack of mics.

Atom6662232d ago

Exactly. The idea of going back to pub lobbies with every random being mic'ed is not something I would be excited about.

jukins2232d ago

Yea not sure why people think this will change that. Every console comes with a mic and replacements are readily available from $1 to several $100s. People like party chat even if it's just a bunch of people playing different games not really talking to each other lol I don't get that

GTgamer2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

I thought the same thing too but after playing warzone/fornite and Apex legend almost every match I played they were using game chat not party chat I guess because you need teamwork in those BR games.

Max_Eckhardt2232d ago

Get ready for more high pitched America boys screaming about what they did to your mom last night mixed with a healthy does of racist slurs.

S2Killinit2232d ago

You can turn it off like any mic ever made. (well maybe not ‘any’)

Smitty20202232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

Like they didn’t have a mic as standard in the first place?, the Ps4 came with a mic free

Some people don’t like talking on a mic

S2Killinit2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

This will be way more accessible. The cool thing about it is that you can turn it off but it also promotes people to communicate more. As a Helldivers fan, it sucks when your party doesnt have a headset on. With a 2 way mic that problem will be resolved, at least as long as the other person wants to communicate.

GTgamer2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

Mannnnn everyone lost that mic 😂😂😂 I don't see people loosing their controllers tho

rainslacker2231d ago

I lost the mic that came with my PS4's. It's probably stuck in a drawer somewhere, or I threw it back in the box which is in a closet somewhere.

But your point is well taken. I don't like talking on mics either except with people I know. I don't like talking to my games either. I don't even use voice assist on any device, although I find it useful in the car to select what music to listen to from the USB drive.

chiefJohn1172232d ago

Theres multiplayer on PlayStation?

P_Bomb2232d ago (Edited 2231d ago )

Yup. Last weekend I went through the Firefly and Hunter journeys in Factions for the second time. Added three new friends, denied a fourth. Still active. Several lvl 999s. Non-toxics get invites.

I’ve long said that Playstation could use more exclusive MP content. PS3 was peak with Warhawk, Starhawk, Killzone, Resistance, DCUO, MAG, UC, TLOU, Twisted Metal, MGS4, LBP, PS:Allstars, even GOW Ascension.

GOW didn’t need MP but TLOU Factions 1000% needs to come back. Still waiting for Dreams MP.

AnubisG2232d ago

Not true. Everyone got a free mic with the PS4 as well. People just don't want to talk to strangers online other than a few weird people.

I play a lot of CoDMW lately and never talk to strangers and you know what I hear from people who do? Just anger, cursing, disgusting filty language. So, most of the time I just mute everyone.

2232d ago
GamerRN2232d ago

Why is this a great new idea when Microsoft did it with the Kinect and everyone made fun of them saying they didn't want to talk to their device. Now Sony does it and they all want to talk to their device...

🤦🏻‍♂️

IRetrouk2232d ago

You could also "talk" to the ps4 , whoever's made fun out of the kinect for that reason was definitely on one lol... but this is more about talking with or to other gamers than to the playstation itself, although going by the ai patent you can probably also do that with it. Be interesting to see.

akaFullMetal2232d ago

There are a couple reasons due to presentation and how Microsoft handled it.

1. The Kinect made the Xbox more expensive even though it was weaker console.
2. There was no way to turn off the Kinect from listening with the system at first. The system had to use Kinect to work.
The DS controller has a mute button .
3. The Kinect took resources from the system, about 10 percent to work.

All those things on top of how Microsoft stumbled out of the gate and that's why it was called out for it's short comings.

GTgamer2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

People were forced to get the kinect with the console that's why people hated it, that and the fact that it was always watching you with night/thermal vision. That's what turned allot of people off you can't force an accessory on people and charge them extra for it and expect them to say ok cool.

rainslacker2231d ago

When MS makes it a feature that they'll always be listening, collect data, and use said data to target advertising towards you, I think that it's reasonable that people would not be that keen on Kinect's implementation. MS was also coming off the heels of supporting NSA efforts to comb through companies user data to supposedly find terrorist. Then MS had the great idea to promote how they could charge per viewer for pay per view rentals of movies, although that was towards content providers. MS was just stupid enough to do it in a public way.

So, yeah. That's a lot different than having a standard mic, which can be turned off if users don't care to use it, and Sony hasn't said yet if they will be uploading user data obtained from the mic, or listening for key words to try and sell you crap you don't want. They may do that, but chances are, you'll be able to opt out of it.

It's the party system that kills online multiplayer comm, everyone is in a party now days

AnubisG2230d ago

And that is the best. We don't have to listen to crazy people while we talk to our friends while playing online.

The party system saved online gaming for me.

DaDrunkenJester2232d ago

Mics have been included with new consoles now for a long time. People will just mute it or be in private chats.

PurpHerbison2231d ago

"everyone having a mic standard will bring multiplayer games back to life"

I think those days are long gone and the biggest culprit is party chat. People just prefer to have their own private parties with their friends.

DragonWarrior192231d ago

It will bring more screaming kids and casuals blaring mumble rap and screaming at their mom/SO to leave them alone except through a tin can.

NotoriousWhiz2231d ago

Back in the good old Socom days, party chat wasn't a thing and we were all generally respectable towards one another with our mics. Kids these days just have no respect for people they can't see. And in some cases no respect even for people right in front of them.

Zeref2231d ago

Were multiplayer games ever dead? What? I'm genuinely confused.

If you're talking about playing with randoms with mics. I think Party Chat killed that. It wasn't that people didnt have mics. You can literally use any headset or even earpiece on both consoles, Who doesnt have a headset with a mic?

Its just that people don't want to talk to randoms.

Shuckylad2232d ago

Will it filter out button presses and hand movement noise? I mean the mic is on the controller itself.

Fishy Fingers2232d ago

I guess so, this will all be done via software not the mic itself so no reason they can impove it overtime

Gardenia2232d ago

For some i guess. The first thing I will do is turn it off in the settings, because I really don't want to talk to a controller or a console.

IRetrouk2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

That's totally your call dude, I understand some not liking it, it's a fair view, and not one I'm gonna try and put you or anyone else down for, personally I like the idea of having a built in mic, but each to their own👌👍

GTgamer2232d ago

Once the option is their that's all that matters

1nsomniac2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

Well it didn’t seem to take that long after all to make people cave in and accept always on mics in their living rooms and children’s bedrooms.

Just goes to show you how fickle the general public are. Push a couple of products (Echo and google home) for a year or 2 to get through the moaning stage and that’s all it takes. Now no one is batting an eye lid. That’s literally all it took.

It really is that simple. Same with gaming micro-transactions. Same with government policies. We really are a soft bunch aren’t we!

IRetrouk2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

There is a mute button, also options to plug in headsets, they also have mute options.

2232d ago
Banghart2232d ago

Im sure it works just like the facebook app. Comes preinstalled on every cell phone, cannot be deleted. And tracks you by GPS 24/7 even if the app is not running. All while the naïve public purchases A.I devices that sit in your house and listen to your every word. All of your spending habits and even can control your home for you. Inviting Big Brother to the dinner table.

MatrixxGT2232d ago

Every smartphone does it. But honestly it was MS messaging with phrases like “always on, always listening” “Kinect required, internet connection required” I’m assuming ps5 will not need to be online to play offline games just like ps4 is today.

2232d ago
OB1Biker2232d ago (Edited 2232d ago )

I think the point was the mic (and by extension the camera) was always on even when the console was not ('xbox on!'). It's very different here.

yoshatabi2231d ago

You do realize you can mute mics right?

Leeroyw2232d ago

Can't wait to hear blokes not playing with their young kids.
