What Went Wrong With Resident Evil 3 Remake?

Capcom’s latest survival horror title has stumbled where the original – or other recent efforts – didn’t. What the hell happened?

While I never played the original, so I can’t compare the two. My only real complaint is it’s so damn short. My first run I beat it in under 5 hrs. That’s really short. From what I’ve heard they cut out a few sections which is just criminal when it make the game this short. Plus there’s no new game+. So there’s no replay value. I’ve beat it twice and I prob won’t play it again. I was still in the mood to shoot some zambies so I just started replaying RE2 for the 8th time.

jeromeface2243d ago

The fact that you don't even acknowledge the difficulties you unlock and just bitch about new game plus shows bias.

neutralgamer19922243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

Jero

So couldn't we get those while they kept all the original content and maybe even add some?

Crimson

This may surprise you but vast vast majority of gamers only play the game once so everyone is no after trophies and stuff

Here is what happened Capcom lied to us when they said both resident evil 2 and 3 were in development at the same time and instead rushed the third one to the market after the success of the 2nd. What they did not realize is if they would have just only taken the extra time this game could have been so much more special and would have sold so much better

5 hour game is 5 hour no matter how you cut it and to this day the order 1886 gets bashed for that so instead of being hypocrites and having a double standard depending on the game let's hold every publisher every developer and every game to the same standard

Don't get me wrong it is a great game and that's what bothers a lot of people even more is only if this was 7 to 8 hours long with some added content it could have been so much more special but instead it has less content than the original

No one is saying the game is bad it's just people were hoping for a bit more content

myfathersbastard2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

I beat it on hardcore twice. Sorry I have no interest in replaying the exact same thing with less ammo. Resident evil has almost always had some sort of new game + type mode. So not having something is a let down.
And what bias? Genuinly what bias? I liked the game. I love RE games. What bias am I showing?

Hungryalpaca2243d ago

That’s literally like saying saying you’re ignoring difficulties and you’re whining about multiplayer.

They’re unrelated.

CrimsonWing692243d ago

What about unlocking all the weapons and going for trophies on higher difficulties?

Isn’t that replay value?

P3L1K4N3LUL2243d ago

The game was awesome, no doubt about that, but it really was short. I unlocked the plat trophy in sunday, after 18hrs of playtime.

myfathersbastard2243d ago

I’m not a trophy hunter at all. Never have been. I play a game one or twice regularly. Then again if there’s a new game + or some sort of “go nuts” mode like infinite ammo or something. Don’t care much for trophies or spending countless playthrough to unlock an additional weapon. I checked the things you need to unlock infinite ammo on each weapon. Some are totally doable. But some are rediculous. You’re have to play the entire game half a dozen times to unlock some of them. No thanks. Glad it’s there for people who go ham on these games though.

Good-Smurf2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

To be honest even RE2 Remake didn't have new game plus as well.
You just unlocked new weapons and costumes and just start a new game nothing is carryover other than unlocked bonus weapons.
Funny how RE2R didn't get criticize for the same problem.

myfathersbastard2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

True. But I also felt compelled to play it 4 times just to feel I played the main game. Leon A, Clair B. Clair A, Leon B. And that was before I even started with the infinite ammo plays. No joke I played RE2, 6 or 7 times in a row before I was done with it. Plus I played the 4th survivor mode. RE3 kept me entertained for 2 full playthroughs and half of a third before I was done. Games good. Just not as good.

Hungryalpaca2243d ago

RE2R was also 4x the length.

morganfell2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

Under 5?

https://howlongtobeat.com/g...

I guess you are the rusher's rusher.

myfathersbastard2243d ago

I didn’t mean to my first playthrough. I heard it was short, but I was assuming 7-9 hrs so I was just trying to move and unlock some new weapons before I slowed down a bit. And before I knew it I was out of the sewers. Second playthrough I explored more and still beat it in around 3.

morganfell2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

Common sense says your complaint about brevity lacks merit. They are not designing games for people that blast through them at a super fast pace. And if you are moving an hour faster than rushers then you are at a super fast pace. Another case of someone upset that the developers did not tailor their game for them specifically. I am not stating the game is without issues. But your argument in this case holds no water.

"Second playthrough I explored more and still beat it in around 3."

3... meaning 3 hours. The last time I checked 3 was less than 5...or 4 for that matter.

Laziness honestly. Made me said. No spiders or anything. No clocktower part of the game and last but not least they took out many many puzzles. Re3 nemesis was my favorite game back in the day. So kind of a let down

NOTHING, it's great. Therefore fcuk right off, please

Rambokind2243d ago

I agree with this statement, especially the 2nd part.

Futureshark2243d ago

I think the game is brilliant, however these days it's unfortunately perceived cool and fashionable to slate things that are popular, for the sake of site clicks and to be seen as 'different'.

Be nice if there were more playtime, but compared to some of the 60 hour or longer epics I've played, its quite refreshing to have something that can be done almost in a lockdown sitting.

PurpHerbison2243d ago

"unfortunately perceived cool and fashionable to slate things that are popular"

Then why didn't RE2 Remake receive that treatmeant?

Ricegum2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

Because it was the first of the remakes and was fresh. Also, the original Resident Evil 3 was more of an action game than original RE2 was, people just don't remember well.

In regards to it being short, you were able to comfortably complete the PlayStation One versions in less than two hours. They were full priced games too.

It's true that people moan way too much today, everything just becomes a hate bandwagon and it's sad.

PurpHerbison2243d ago

Because RE2 got the treatment you would expect a remake to get. In fact, it set a new standard for remakes.
I actually do remember pretty well because RE3 is my favorite and I would not call it an action game just cause Nemesis chased you around sometimes. It was very much a survival horror just like RE2 except it had a bigger emphasis on puzzles.

You could beat RE2 and RE3 classic versions in under an hour if you never stop moving from start to finish WITH safe strats. But I would never use that as an argument. Lots of games get torn a new hole when it comes to speeding through it.

Good-Smurf2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

You'll get tear to pieces if you do that good thing the fans moved on to bash RE3 instead and now they slowly accept the reality that RE2 are not a masterpiece as thought it was a year ago.

BlackTar1872243d ago

Ricegum

yes re3 was short on ps1 but came with merc mode which is way better than RE online that came with re3.

NapalmSanctuary2242d ago

@Ricegum The original was not an action game in any sense of the word. It had the added action element of the dodge mechanic, but that did not make it an action game. It was still survival horror, through and through. The remake, on the other hand, doesn't even offer a real threat to the player, even on hardcore difficulty and the only place that is even slightly creepy is the substation.

And I just played the original a couple of weeks ago so no memory issues here. The original is actually longer than the remake. Also, the original being short is not a reason for the remake to be short. If anything, it was an issue to be resolved in the remake. I don't know why people keep bringing up the originals length. Its no excuse for a modern AAA game.

Nerdmaster2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

The basic gameplay is brilliant, because it's based on RE2's remake. However, it's clear that Capcom used RE3 remake as a tool to make people play Resident Evil Resistance, a multiplayer game with paid lootboxes.

Resistance would be a really tough sell by itself, so by spending less money on RE3, Capcom could ship both games together in the hopes of getting people addicted on the former.

So when a person criticises RE3 remake, it's not because it's fashionable to hate on popular things. RE3 is good. But not only it could be much better, it also shows Capcom's disrespect to the game and it returning at being the greedy company it always was, after getting some fan love for some excellent games in the near past.

dnAWE2243d ago (Edited 2243d ago )

It's a great game, but certainly not without issues. Issues that could have been fixed with more development time or a bigger, upfront budget to expand the game with more content and more rigorous QA.

It's obvious they reused a lot of assets from RE2 and perhaps even cut out sections originally envisioned for RE3 to ensure they could hit the release date of April 2020.

All in all, a fun game that had more potential than was utilised.
A lot of icing, not a lot of cake. 8/10. Would still bang.

BadElf2243d ago

And its fondant icing. The worst

Eamon2243d ago

Yeh I agree with your view. I'd give it maybe 7 or 7.5 out of 10. RE2make was a masterpiece. RE3make was clearly developed alongside with a different team and smaller budget. If it was given maybe another year of development, then maybe it'd be just as good as its predecessor.

Lexreborn22243d ago

I beat it 3 times already and had a blast, played it more then most games still in the wrapper lol

Jon_Targaryen2243d ago

That doesnt even make sense...

Lexreborn22243d ago

It does Jon, I have a ton of games I have bought sitting under my stand. And I have even touched them but I beat this game 3 times over. I got the bang for my buck so the game was fully worth it for me.

The UK Has Gone Mad for Resident Evil After the Huge Success of Requiem on PS5

Capcom recently released Resident Evil Requiem, and it's been so successful that it's seemingly dragging along every other Resi game with it.
