SyntheticForm2265d ago

Very impressive.

Can't wait to get ahold of the new consoles.

solideagle2265d ago

I am surprised they announced full specs 7 months before launch. MS seems very confident which is always a good thing. I am assuming PS5 will be similar in specs, MS will not let them have power advantage like this gen's start.

On the other hand Corona is killing everything :(

SyntheticForm2265d ago

Right.

You can look at it one of two ways; they're blowing their load all at once and early or they're very confident. Being a glass half full kinda guy, I'm going to go with confident.

Neonridr2265d ago

@SyntheticForm - I think in this case, the CPU and GPU for both machines were already decided a while back. I mean if they had plans for a holiday release those boards would already be getting produced now. Things like RAM and storage can always change last minute, but it's not like MS announcing this means that Sony can go back and redesign things on that level. So no point in holding it back anymore.

2265d ago
UltraNova2265d ago

I'll be honest here, MS went all in with the Series X and pulled all stops to get there. A lot of thought went into this machine, I'm very very impressed!

One thing though, that propiatery SSD expansion card will be EXPENSIVE, add that to the console's cost (500-600at least) and the sum is pretty substantial.

That said, the ball is in Sony's court now and I can't wait for their reveal!

darthv722265d ago

I like that they are addressing the expandable storage with two options. USB for xbo and older games (which is nice as i can just plug my 4tb external in and get back to playing) as well as high speed SSD carts for SX games.

Grown Folks Talk2265d ago

Get the specs & similar details out of the way now, then they can focus on games & services w/e their digital E3 replacement happens.

mandingo2265d ago

So can you not use a traditional mechanical drive for XSX games?

PETE19852265d ago

@mandingo
You wouldn't be able to run xsx games with standard HDD as the games would be designed around the speeds of the SSD.
This is to be expected and Sony will have to implement the exact same thing.

b163o12265d ago

Sounds good, sad you'll have to wait until 2022 before there are any XBoXsX exclusives...

I'm sure I'll have a load of disagree's, but these word came from M$....

ABizzel12264d ago (Edited 2264d ago )

They're confident in the hardware because what's here is borderline amazing for a console with today's technology. The hardware they have is basically comparable to a Ryzen 3700 and RTX 2080 / 2080S, which as of today are the 2nd and 3rd most powerful GPUs for consumers (in 6 - 8 months, they should still be top 10).

So hardware performance they're confident with what they have to offer, the thing that they're not going to announce until the very last moment will be the price because this is going to be a $599 console for consumer and that's a best-case scenario with Microsoft taking a loss on each unit sold, and $699 if they want to break even.

Considering all the rumors around the Series X was pretty spot on with Digital Foundry, I guess it's safe to say Scarlett or Series S is pretty accurate as well (GPU perfomrance similar to XBO-X better in most cases due to higher RAM speed and SSD), and I wonder if both will be launching at the same time.

MS strategy is winning price with the cheaper Series S likely $349 - $399, and winning power with the Series X, again $599 - $699.

This leaves PS5 likely dead in the middle around $499, with rumored 5700 XT - RTX 2070S performance.

Edit: now allegedly there's a rumor going around stating the PS5 might have 2 versions as well, with the exact same GPU as the Series X just clocked higher, as the guy who leaked the specs for the Series X leaked the PS5's specs as well, down to the CU count and clock speeds. It's time for all to speak, so we can end this, and see the games, and here the prices :(

Very powerfull and impressive console.

We're for a treat, boys.

Soon. :)

Tech52265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

not only that but it's slightly more powerful than the original spreadsheet claimed. (@ 1:55 in DF video)
the console is 12.155 tflops, not 11.8 tflops.

Artemidorus2265d ago

Master race are pretty much laughing right nowm

MajorLazer2265d ago

Cannot wait. I salivate when I next of the next gen consoles. Gran Turismo 7 & Forza 8 are gonna be mindblowing. I'm going from a base PS4 on a 22" 1080P screen to PS5 on a 4K TV 🤤

RpgSama2265d ago

I'm excited for next generation too, cannot wait till December (hopefully we are still up for a December release of next-gen)

Jin_Sakai2265d ago

As a PlayStation fan I have to give credit to the Xbox team. Series X is a very powerful console with some amazing next gen features. It also looks incredibly well designed. Next gen can’t come soon enough!

DarkBlaze252265d ago

As someone who enjoys both I wish more people would think this way when looking at either system. Even if it's not your preference you don't have to downplay another system for some ridiculous self satisfaction. This comment is truly refreshing on a site like this.

Gazondaily2265d ago

Fair play mate :) I am confident Sony can pull something out of the bag and have an even more powerful console or at least match the power. Sony traditionally put the power to better use imo but I expect things to change drastically next-gen. Cant wait for both consoles.

Sounds great....except for the proprietary external storage. Wonder how much those expansion cards are going to cost.

Doge2265d ago

Probably around the ballpark of $200 or more. It would’ve sucked ass if they didn’t allow external HDD support though.

RazzerRedux2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

Yeah, at least that option will be there. A USB-C port would have been preferable.

Wasabi2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

@Razzer

**"A USB-C port would have been preferable."**

It makes no difference. USB-C is simply a style of physical plug and not a specification/ standard.

USB-C can run USB 1, 2 or 3 transfer speeds and variants of each or even Thunderbolt 3. The speed of the drive is dependent on the interface of the drive (NVME / SATA) and the quality and capability of the connecting cable, not the physical type of plug on each end of the wire.

RazzerRedux2265d ago

Yeah.....I just *prefer* the reversible type C connector. It isn't a big deal.

2264d ago
Spenok2264d ago

Yeah, but with an external you won't be able to have the system take advantage of the storage the fancy way they were talking about with these memory cards.

drpepperdude2265d ago

It's not a bad thing as long as it's as cheap as it's non proprietary counterpart. I've been fine with my 1TB HDD in my One X, I delete games I have no plans to go back to anytime soon and I always have space because of it.

Concertoine2265d ago

It won't be, its a matter of how much more expensive it will be. I assume the option for an external HDD will still be there because storage expansion will be a big part of next gen if were starting out with 1 TB drives

KillBill2264d ago

@Concertoine - it has already been pointed out by MS that HDD drives for Series X will only allow older Xbox One games and previous to be played. New Series X games will not be able to be played off of older HDD drives.

@drpepperdude - neither MS nor Sony are very good at offering affordable proprietary storage options as their offerings have always been much more than retail costs of similar storage size//type.

TGGJustin2265d ago

They are going to be costly for sure. At least $100 which for only 1TB is a lot. For comparison I bought a 8TB for my PS4 for just over $100.

2265d ago
MajorLazer2265d ago

HDD vs super, super advanced SSD. Impossible to compare prices.

FreeFallFrenzy2265d ago

I just bought a midrange 1TB NVME drive for my laptop and it cost $100. These are looking like they'll have specs more in line to Samsung EVO drives that run around $220 retail for 1TB. Maybe Sony and MS will have competitive partnerships to get these prices lower for the external cards, but don't count on it.

rainslacker2264d ago

Not impossible to compare prices. Its cost per TB. Pretty common metric.

But you are correct that the performance difference is not relative, and as of now, I'm not sure this new ssd tech has made the mainstream consumer market. If it has, I think the drives that could be brought would match the PC bus and form factor, which these new systems arent using, so replacement wouldnt be am option anyways.

DJStotty2265d ago

@Razzer

Probably the same as a normal external SSD.

Seagate have had a deal with microsoft for a while regarding expansion hard drives, and the 2tb xbox branded external, was the same price as the seagate 2tb external.

RazzerRedux2265d ago

That was a standard drive with Xbox branding. It wasn't proprietary. Proprietary typically costs more than standard.

DJStotty2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

This is not proprietary either, from the article :-

USB 3.2 HDD Support

separate from the :-

1TB Expansion Card

RazzerRedux2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

"Microsoft has partnered with Seagate for its proprietary external 1TB SSD expansion. "

Yes, the "proprietary external 1TB SSD expansion" is in fact "proprietary". This isn't the same as the USB 3.2 storage which can ONLY be used for Xbox One and BC games. I clearly wasn't referring to USB 3.2 storage when I explicitly questioned the cost of the *proprietary* expansion cards.

There is an entire article dedicated to the proprietary expansion cards. I suggest you read it:

"If you want to have more than 1 TB of playable games on your Xbox Series X, prepare to shell out some money."
https://n4g.com/news/233265...

rainslacker2264d ago (Edited 2264d ago )

Proprietary is typically more expensive simply because packaging it in smaller shipping units increases the price. Best example. There was no real difference with the vita memory cards over standard memory cards at the time. It included an encryption key which Sony wanted to keep on lockdown, and its own form factor. Since there was less demand for that card, the prices were higher, and since there was only one distributor, they had no reason to compete on price.

Relative difference in price will probably be comparable to what the 360 add on drive cost compared to a standard hard drive last gen. Only unknown factor would be that I dont know of a comparable drive to compare it to that would be considered standard.

DJStotty2264d ago (Edited 2264d ago )

@Razzer

"sigh"

Ok, the expandable hardware to mimick the internal SSD of the series X is proprietary, in other words, to mimick that hard drive, you need the card. Proprietary means ownership, in other words, no 3rd party can make an expansion card to go in that slot. But you do not NEED to buy that card, you can attach a USB SSD to the console to use as external storage.

"The back of the Xbox Series X has a port dedicated to these Storage Expansion Cards, but the Series X will also accept external USB hard drives. Xbox Series X games can be backed up to a USB drive, but users must install them to the console’s internal SSD or a Storage Expansion Card to play them."

https://www.polygon.com/202...

So you stating "This isn't the same as the USB 3.2 storage which can ONLY be used for Xbox One and BC games." is absolute nonsense

I suggest you read the link.

MajorLazer2265d ago

They wanted full backwards compatibility with all accesories which is pretty cool, esp for people who bought expensive racing wheels and such.

timotim2265d ago

No that sounds great too! It is needed if you want to maintain the level of loading time and performance with these next gen games. Sony will have to do something similar...simply plugging in the same external HDDs we have now in the back of next gen consoles will drop the performance significantly.

DJStotty2264d ago

That is why you can use any USB HDD/SSD as backup for series x games, but you will need to install them to the internal/External SSD card in order to play.

2265d ago
NeoGamer2322265d ago

The issue here is that if the new generation is relying on SSD for performance improvements it makes it difficult to allow you to just put any hard drive on the device. Essentially, the hard drive would have to meet or exceed the performance spec of the system.

RazzerRedux2265d ago

Not just any hard drive though. It is NVMe. They say "custom" NVMe but as far as we know that is just the proprietary connector. So requiring NVMe SSD isn't really that difficult.

I'm just not sold on giving Sony and Microsoft excuses for proprietary hardware.

DJStotty2264d ago

You can use any USB external as storage, and then install the game to the internal when you want to play.

osamaq2265d ago

impressive but I expected the Ram would be at least 24GB

I_am_Batman2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

I was expecting 16-20GB. I've originally predicted 20GB for the PS5 mostly because I thought the GPU would require the bandwidth a 320-bit bus would deliver. With GDDR6 and NVME prices rising I'm not surprised to see MS settle for 16GB. Interesting to see that Microsoft have gone the 320-bit bus route with 16GB though. It's an interesting compromise that was surely chosen to keep the cost of the console down. Obviously I would've preferred to see a full 20GB with a uniform bandwidth, but depending on the memory management it might not be much of a problem. 2.5GB of that slower pool will be used for background processes of the OS and ony 1.5GB will be used by games meaning that ~11% of the game's memory will be slower than the rest. I'm curious how much of that memory management can be implemented at the system level and whether an implementation at the engine level is going to be necessary.

Everything else is absolutely amazing. Kudos to MS for designing a great console.

ThinkThink2265d ago

Anything more that 12 gigs of ram is really overkill IF you are using 100 gigs of the ssd as virtual ram.

rainslacker2264d ago

12-16 since the ssd drive since the best practices for devs suggest using it as a virtual memory.

I_am_Batman2264d ago

@ThinkThink & rainslacker: Virtual memory is not a substitute for RAM. NVME is fast, but nowhere near as fast as GDDR6. It can of course reduce the memory footprint by storing less critical data where HDDs would've been to slow. I highly doubt that 12GB would've been enough though.

LightofDarkness2265d ago

Watch the vid. The way they handle memory is actually game changing. The levels and varieties of detail possible with their streaming and compression tech (coupled with SSD caching) could be staggering.

hennessey862265d ago

the SSD is used as virtual memory as well, all explained in the video

Kubark2265d ago

averagejoe262265d ago

Imagine thinking the number of teraflops make something a beast LOL

Its always obvious when people have no idea what they're talking about open their mouth.

MecheSlays2265d ago

It does. And the fact that it has multiple other performance implementations up its sleeve is wild.

orakle442265d ago

It is a direct relation to gaming power. Oh the irony with your comment......

"Its always obvious when people have no idea what they're talking about open their mouth."

Please enlighten us with your vast insight regarding the Series X technical specifications.

AngelicIceDiamond2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

What's interesting is the Gears and Minecraft wasn't even using a fraction on the Series X capabilities. The Gears demo was made in 2 weeks unoptimized port running at the highest settings possible on PC today. The demo just barely scratched the GPU if at all to deliver it and that was just in 2 weeks which is very fast. Just think if they re hauled the entire game on Series and they took several months. The Series Series X essentially ran gears 5 in its sleep.

RememberThe3572265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

You all need to check out the Digital Foundry video on TF. There's a lot more to GPU performance than TF. Hell, they even explain it in the video.

ReadyPlayer222265d ago

Unoptimized Gears 5 is already pushing RTX 2080 levels of performance. This console is an absolute animal

SyntheticForm2265d ago

Yeah that stood out to me too.

One of the most important parts of the video.

beulahland2265d ago

and it was ported on just two weeks!

LightofDarkness2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

Yep, it's not even taking advantage of the next gen features of the GPU or memory, just raw Xbox One X style code with all settings on uktra. It even has Ray raced GI enabled. So many outstanding ideas in this console so far, these videos from DF got me hyped. I was thinking these consoles would be lame refreshes, but they're looking to be far more game changing than the XBO and PS4.

StrangerX2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

What about the elephant in the room that no one wants to mention!! The RT cores are comparable to the GPU in itself. In the video it shows that to do all that stuff in Ray Trace like (minecraft all made of RT) it needs around 13tflps of power to handle. Basically around 20tflps of hybrid power in the system. I did not say 25tflps like in the video because the GPU needs to do its calculations too. But the hybrid GPU can happen in the future. That's very exciting!

dveio29d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing29d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9229d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit29d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing29d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9229d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
