The Real Problem With Video Game Remakes

Remakes can be awesome, but there's one issue people need to figure out. And it needs to happen really soon!

I'm confused
so the problem, no, the "real" problem with remakes, is that it might make the original version less appealling by comparison?

I think that’s the gist of it. But it’s a technology thing too. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle. Pixelated polygon graphics with tank controls, fixed camera and low to no textures in 4x3 don’t necessarily age as well as old movies. You can still film a black and white 4x3 homage like the Lighthouse, but I don’t think history has the same reverence for triangle faces and graphic breakup.

8-bit on the other hand has a certain charm to it imo. Clean, efficient. Big Rigs would still be ugly even if it wasn’t glitchy.

I partially disagree. I agree that games before the PS2 generally haven't aged well. On the other hand, I think something that a lot of people miss is that the polygonal look of PS1/N64/90s PC games is just as charming for people who grew up with them at an early age. There are games like Strafe that intentionally emulated that specific look. In reality, 8 bit graphics look similarly poor if you take the nostalgia glasses off. They have simplistic art, garish colour palettes, repetitive music and the games themselves were also incredibly basic in scope.

I tried to play Sonic Mania (16-bit look) when it came to PS Plus and I found the art a bit hard to look at, tbh. I can't stand the retro look and sounds that some indie games overindulge in. I didn't really grow up with this look besides GBA games though. I and a lot of other people would take Pro Skater, MGS1 and Ocarina of Time any day over NES/SNES/Mega Drive games.

Yeah i could see the mileage vary depending on what era we all cut our teeth in. Our nostalgia meters will all be different. You have a point.

I guess then as far as the author goes, which RE1-3 would we or should we put in the proverbial time capsule? The OG polygons from the PS1/N64/Dreamcast era...or the equally well received RE1-3 remakes of the modern era? Everything was cutting edge once upon a time. How do we preserve that in spite of progress? Do we need to?

Remakes are awesome especially if they are done well.

I don't really consider the recent Shadow of the Colossus game a Remake more like a Graphical Remaster since its literally the exact same game just with prettier graphics. Now RE1R, RE2R and RE3R those games are Remakes.

LucasRuinedChildhood2265d ago (Edited 2265d ago )

I get what you're saying (most remakes are noticeably different in some way) but the game was remastered on PS3 where it had the bells and whistles of a typical remaster (higher resolution, better framerate, better AA, etc).

SOTC (PS4) was definitely a remake. Bluepoint rebuilt the game and all the assets and even changed the feel of the game a little bit by tightening up the controls. Bluepoint just decided not to deviate at all from the source material.

We're just going to have to agree to disagree I consider the PS3 remaster a traditional remaster but the PS4 a graphical Remaster, there is a difference btw the two with the latter requiring more effort and work but still not the same as a remake in eyes.

Simply because Bluepoint decided to keep the gameplay exactly the same doesnt mean we could call it a remaster. Shadow of the Colossus on PS4 is absolutely a remake. They literally made the game again.
