Dreams Devs Looking to Improve Trending Tab to Highlight More Original Content

The Trending category in Dreams tends to favor remakes and viral content. And Media Molecule says it will continue to improve this to give original content better exposure.

AspiringProGenji2290d ago

I mean memes are life, but I would be annoyed with highlights full of memes. I hope they make a tab or a session only for memes tho

MasterCornholio2290d ago

Maybe you can use copy right to take them down. But there are plenty of people who still make original content so there really isn't a need to.

rainslacker2289d ago

It's kind of on the owner of the copyright to say they dont approve. Sony could be preemptive to avoid problems, but generally, it's better if the hosting service doesnt try and decide what is appropriate or not. While I'm sure some of these remakes arent going to fly in the long run, and Nintendo is known to shut them down fast, it doesnt mean that some content owners wouldnt approve of these fan made games.

Some of it may depend on the extent of the remake. Sometimes it's just small.parts of a game, or things that could fall within fair use. For instance, a meme, created with creator made assets, isnt necessarily a copyright violation. But on those things, sony is likely to take the youtube path of caution to protect itself, over fighting for the creators.

If they dont, then I'd actually be pretty impressed, and it would serve as a good exercise to define fair use more clearly when it comes to user created content, as the laws are up to interpretation, despite being somewhat specific at the same time

Atom6662289d ago

Fair use won't help many of these creations. Anytime you tread even remotely close to "clone" territory, the cease and desists will be coming.

I give it only a few months before we start seeing the takedown notices come flying. We know Sony's got a lot of attorneys, but they won't be able to do much to help them when something as vague as a fan made game having the same "look and feel" is enough to justify a copyright claim.

If this is a fight Sony wants to have, I appreciate them for it. They'll lose, but it'd be nice to watch. Now I say that as someone who doesn't own the IP being used here. They probably won't appreciate it as much...

rainslacker2289d ago

Yeah. I think that maybe right now some light tribute or practice work isn't going to garner too much trouble for the creators. But eventually, some creators are going to push it with more content within those creations, and at that point, it goes from fair use derivative work, or fan appreciation, to production level work, which companies may feel threatened by, and even if they don't care too much, they have to protect their trademark, and not show signs of duplicity in what is allowed where. Some companies take a no exceptions outlook on such things....like Nintendo...others may lay out ground rules for what they consider acceptable. But, in the end, these companies are always within their rights to issue a cease and desist, or in the case of dreams, probably file a DMCA claim with Sony(like you see on YouTube). It would then be up to the creator to defend why it's valid content, which most won't, or can't afford, and Sony is likely to stay on the side of protecting their own ass from potential lawsuits for hosting the content....like what YouTube does.

I don't see Sony fighting too hard for the creators on this. They are part of the industry that would be issuing these claims, and they don't want to upset a lot of their partners by trying to make them look bad.

People will have to just expect this to happen eventually, but you know that Sony's probably still going to get grief for it. I also think that some people don't recognize when copyright is actually being infringed, and immediately jump to the side of the creators as if they are innocent and should be allowed to do whatever they want. Unfortunately, it just doesn't happen like that in the real world, nor should it. There's a fine line between fair use and infringement. If people want to make such things for their own use, have at it. Heck, even use it in a portfolio. Just don't post it publicly with a bunch of self marketing to draw attention to it.

Atom6662289d ago

The saving grace for some may be that Nintendo is so backwards sometimes, it may take them awhile to even notice...

Get your mario clones in while you can guys!

rainslacker2288d ago

I'm pretty confident that Nintendo knows what's going on in dreams. As of now, they probably don't want to be too fervent to stop these things. Plus, it's not uncommon for Nintendo to wait and do these things down the line, usually when there is a lot more investment into such things.

I'm not sure why Sony is so scared of promoting this game?

I understand that there are copyright fears, but remakes are what trends.

I posted that Tsushima clip to Twitter and it's pushing 400k views.

If it's a remake of a Sony IP there should be no issue.

I sent the Tsushima video to Shu, Sucker Punch, Goldfarb ect and NONE of them even liked it let alone retweeted or commented. Meanwhile my Tweet is getting more pub than many SIE promotional ads for Dreams.

It baffles me as to why someone like Goldfarb who is community manager for SP wouldn't get in on it. No response to my DMs either.

That video blew up with no help from the big guys. Hopefully us common folk can continue our guerrilla marketing in hopes that this incredible game will succeed. We do it for free because we believe in the product, your welcome Sony.

its a fangame.

but nice either way

I don’t see this single level as a fan made but as a demo pitch from the studio to revive the franchise with a new game and to measure the want of PlayStation for a full game

Michiel1989180d ago

and they're gaging that by making a level in a dead game?

fr0sty180d ago

It's a great engine to quickly prototype and publicly test a game concept. Honestly, had they approached the business model differently, Dreams could have been very successful... They could have made their money from the creators, not just off game sales, if they'd made a system that lets you pay a fee to export your games/levels so that they are playable on any PlayStation even if you don't have Dreams installed. That would have opened up an additional revenue stream that would have made the game profitable. Charge an export fee, then take a cut of each sale for the games created... it gives financial incentive for developers to invest serious time into making games in that engine, which increases the quality of the projects made within it. Dreams was just ahead of its time.

Exthun180d ago

That's happening when you’ve got a great IP but no clue how to use it, while others are yelling at you to get to work on them.

Babadook7180d ago

Nice. This put a smile on my face. Good job to the Dreams developer.

Abnor_Mal180d ago

I always said that Dreams should have released on every PC/console capable of handling its graphical prowess, not like it was so much of a powerhouse anyways. It should have also had PSVR2 compatibility.

It’s a shame the game was put out to pastures so early in its life.

Babadook7180d ago

Yup. Should be on psvr2.

Miraak82 180d ago

It should have had kb/m support and no mp implementation was a mistake ..... I miss lbp , they should have just stuck with that franchise . If they didn't kill the servers it would still be installed on my ps , it was a game of endless fun

gaffyh180d ago

That's actually super impressive

Knightofelemia180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

Banjo Kazooie isn't the only franchise Microsoft is sitting on and doing nothing.

Miraak82 180d ago

Same can be said for Sony also , a couple years after the ps4 launched and after the success of TLoU they basically abandoned everything except for GoW, GT, R&C and MLB .. such a shame . Was never a XB or MS person but knowing all the franchises Sony will never touch again stings a lot

Such a shame media Molecule and sony didnt know what to do with this game. Now would be a perfect time to release it multiplat like helldivers 2. It needs a large community.

Dreams had potential but it really needed to get off of the PS4. It released so late in the gen when everyone was already wanting to move on to next gen systems. It should have come to PC, and a native PS5 version should have definitely released.

Knushwood Butt485d ago

I bought it Day 1 but the 'campaign' was pretentious and just didn't work for me. I had no intention of making content so was left to fumble through the user created content. Some good stuff, with the pig detective being the most memorable. However, just moved on to other stuff, and despite owning VR, never once played in VR either.

Knushwood Butt485d ago

Media Molecule always seem to be too ahead of the curve to have a big hit. Hopefully whatever they are working on now finds a big audience.

YoungKingDoran485d ago

For whatever reason/s they somehow dropped the ball hard with Dreams, our loss

Lionsguard485d ago

Dreams was fantastic, especially when VR was added. The things people managed to build was incredible. Some of the best VR experiences are still from Dreams experiences. The huge crux for it was being on consoles however and it was missing one thing that they didn't have back then and that we have now..... A.I.. With the advent of AI today, if they could have had Dreams running on PC and somehow got AI to work where we just typed in a prompt and it did things, it would have been a massive game changer, it could have just made the AI "Dream" and create its own things. It could have solved their problem of somehow getting one dream to just change into another one seamlessly. I really think Dreams deserves a second chance.

Rancegamerx485d ago

It was an awesome idea but even with tools that were supposed to make it easier to make a game, it was still so hard and convoluted. It tried to do to much at once. It would have been better to separate everything into easier parts, build the world, then the character's, then the music, etc. Not everything all at once. Some people understood it but most were overwelmed or confused.
