A Developer Review of Dreams

Can you actually make the game of your dreams in Dreams? A developer tries it out.

tochi2293d ago

This is the best review of the game.
It sounds too technical but the game is about technical aspects of game developing.
So I wanted to know how game developers think about Dreams. I guess it's the same logic we want to hear what racing drivers think about GT.

UltraNova2293d ago

I always find devs insight on games fascinating. I love learning how stuff works.

I was thinking earlier, wouldn't it be a great idea if Sony asked all their studios to make at least one small Dreams creation?

Acecalibur2293d ago

Good idea, but they probably neck deep in PS5 dev kits.

Knushwood Butt2293d ago

So tochi,

Why do you think this game has had limited / zero publicity in Japan?

IamTylerDurden12293d ago (Edited 2293d ago )

It's not really specific to Japan, Dreams just hasn't received much marketing anywhere. It's not the type of game u throw a 20 million dollar marketing campaign at and expect 2 million units opening week. Dreams is almost like a service game with no annual fee. Sales will be a slow burn and the game will largely market itself through user creations and social media.

I personally feel as though Sony mismanaged this incredible, once in a generation type of game. I would've beefed up the story campaign, created one marketable mascot, thrown a little money into advertising, and marketed it as a full $60 GAME from the creators of the mega hit LBP. I even would've encouraged Mm to help a minority of the most promising devs/projects with advice, ideas, and even some co-development in order to get more high quality content to the community.

Unfortunately Sony chose to cut the price $39.99 and trim down marketing. I understand why, but i don't agree. Hopefully the game does indeed have legs and between future updates, creations, VR, PS5, and the spectacular reviews it's enough to move units into the 3-4 million range at some point.

Si-Fly2293d ago (Edited 2293d ago )

It’s actually slightly different with GT, you have a real life racers praising it but anybody in the know is aware that the RL racers are actually using titles like ACC and iRacing on PC to keep sharp. Look at Lando, Verstappen, Sainz, Byron, SVG, Bell, Biela etc, all on iRacing

IamTylerDurden12293d ago

It's not even the marketing, but the community and media. Dreams is a big first party with a 93 Opencritic. This game should be all over N4G and gaming media proper. It just feels like ppl allow money to dictate their interests. Games with huge advertising dominate sites like this. They dominate the entirety of media and social media alike. But we choose what we want to talk about, play, and promote. Be vocal with the things u feel strongly about, whether popular or not. Dreams deserves to be a talking point, make it happen.

Knushwood Butt2293d ago

Totally agree, and on that note, do you think Dreams is relatively safe for kids? I see it has a 12 rating where I am.

FullmetalRoyale2293d ago

I know you did not ask me, but I believe it is appropriate for all ages, supervised. The creations that are scary, or have blood and gore are usually clearly tagged with related buzzwords. And you can tell by the title/cover image of a dream if it is appropriate for whatever audience is present. There is plenty of content that is objectively appropriate for all ages, and that's a big part of why I love it.

froy4022293d ago

I can see totally see people making sexual wierd games, just a thought.

Knushwood Butt2292d ago

@ Fullmetal

Thanks for the response.

its a fangame.

but nice either way

I don’t see this single level as a fan made but as a demo pitch from the studio to revive the franchise with a new game and to measure the want of PlayStation for a full game

Michiel1989173d ago

and they're gaging that by making a level in a dead game?

fr0sty173d ago

It's a great engine to quickly prototype and publicly test a game concept. Honestly, had they approached the business model differently, Dreams could have been very successful... They could have made their money from the creators, not just off game sales, if they'd made a system that lets you pay a fee to export your games/levels so that they are playable on any PlayStation even if you don't have Dreams installed. That would have opened up an additional revenue stream that would have made the game profitable. Charge an export fee, then take a cut of each sale for the games created... it gives financial incentive for developers to invest serious time into making games in that engine, which increases the quality of the projects made within it. Dreams was just ahead of its time.

Exthun174d ago

That's happening when you’ve got a great IP but no clue how to use it, while others are yelling at you to get to work on them.

Babadook7174d ago

Nice. This put a smile on my face. Good job to the Dreams developer.

Abnor_Mal173d ago

I always said that Dreams should have released on every PC/console capable of handling its graphical prowess, not like it was so much of a powerhouse anyways. It should have also had PSVR2 compatibility.

It’s a shame the game was put out to pastures so early in its life.

Babadook7173d ago

Yup. Should be on psvr2.

Miraak82 173d ago

It should have had kb/m support and no mp implementation was a mistake ..... I miss lbp , they should have just stuck with that franchise . If they didn't kill the servers it would still be installed on my ps , it was a game of endless fun

gaffyh174d ago

That's actually super impressive

Knightofelemia174d ago (Edited 174d ago )

Banjo Kazooie isn't the only franchise Microsoft is sitting on and doing nothing.

Miraak82 173d ago

Same can be said for Sony also , a couple years after the ps4 launched and after the success of TLoU they basically abandoned everything except for GoW, GT, R&C and MLB .. such a shame . Was never a XB or MS person but knowing all the franchises Sony will never touch again stings a lot

Such a shame media Molecule and sony didnt know what to do with this game. Now would be a perfect time to release it multiplat like helldivers 2. It needs a large community.

Dreams had potential but it really needed to get off of the PS4. It released so late in the gen when everyone was already wanting to move on to next gen systems. It should have come to PC, and a native PS5 version should have definitely released.

Knushwood Butt479d ago

I bought it Day 1 but the 'campaign' was pretentious and just didn't work for me. I had no intention of making content so was left to fumble through the user created content. Some good stuff, with the pig detective being the most memorable. However, just moved on to other stuff, and despite owning VR, never once played in VR either.

Knushwood Butt479d ago

Media Molecule always seem to be too ahead of the curve to have a big hit. Hopefully whatever they are working on now finds a big audience.

YoungKingDoran478d ago

For whatever reason/s they somehow dropped the ball hard with Dreams, our loss

Lionsguard478d ago

Dreams was fantastic, especially when VR was added. The things people managed to build was incredible. Some of the best VR experiences are still from Dreams experiences. The huge crux for it was being on consoles however and it was missing one thing that they didn't have back then and that we have now..... A.I.. With the advent of AI today, if they could have had Dreams running on PC and somehow got AI to work where we just typed in a prompt and it did things, it would have been a massive game changer, it could have just made the AI "Dream" and create its own things. It could have solved their problem of somehow getting one dream to just change into another one seamlessly. I really think Dreams deserves a second chance.

Rancegamerx478d ago

It was an awesome idea but even with tools that were supposed to make it easier to make a game, it was still so hard and convoluted. It tried to do to much at once. It would have been better to separate everything into easier parts, build the world, then the character's, then the music, etc. Not everything all at once. Some people understood it but most were overwelmed or confused.
