MS knows they would lose in a head to head battle. Why do you think they are trying to create an ecosystem around them? They are trying to literally change the foundation of consoles because PlayStation has been so dominant.

Given Xbox's current place in the current generation, this sentence, and likely this article, doesn't make any sense.

Even if MS is striking off in their own direction, specially if they want to be regarded as going beyond Sony and Nintendo, they have to do better than empty hype and speculation from their fan camp that gives them an automatic win. Be more than an aggregate gaming service focused on multiplayer "community" games its very likely to be while thumbing its nose at consoles.

I don't think it's a case of underestimating, I think if anything they're trying to realign expectations with a different market. People keep claiming that game/console streaming is the future, and in that market you're competing with Google and Amazon. But we all know that the national broadband infrastructure isn't ready for 4K game streaming with data caps and limited markets for high speed data to begin with.

PS4 was obviously the runaway winner and we can expect brand loyalty to carry over a lot of customers to the PS5, so it's easy to see why Microsoft doesn't want to invite the 1 to 1 comparison between them and Playstation. It's going to take some aggressive innovation and addition of console exclusives to bridge the gap between XsX and PS5, and they're going an interesting route by saying you don't need their new console for 1-2 years to play new games. Time will tell how it pays off, but by getting people into subscriptions over hardware it's not going to be pretty during that time either.

Why on Earth would MS underestimate a company who has consistently sold more systems than them, gen after gen, and all but one time it was by a massive margin?

Not understanding the hype for Xbox next gen. I’ve always been an Xbox guy but after this gen and the direction of Xbox I’m probably jumping ship. Game pass is just the Trojan horse for more and more micro transactions. We get all 1st party games for free yet none of the dlc? It’s not going to take long until more and more of there games are in the dlc. Sony seems to be more honest with there plans. $60 for a AAA game is a bargain, I’d much rather pay $60 upfront then get nickle and dimed

The thoughts on here amuse me. Here's a few things you should chew on:

1. MS has azure cloud services Sony is renting from MS. (To make all things Playstation work!)
2. MS has access to Xbox, Nintendo, PC and yes even Playstation devices that use Cross-play. Sony doesn't even come close to this much access!
3. MS is working on technologies outside of Xbox! Xbox (series devices), Samsung phones, (Iphone (will be soon), PC, tablets Nintendo Switch and currently PS4. PS5 won't want to miss Minecraft Dungeons so, you can probably add PS5 to that list too...
4. MS has access to everyone's XBL, GP and UGP account details on ALL THESE DEVICES! They will know what their consumers want because of this access ability... (think Google or Amazon for a comparison!)
5. MS has access to a endless Warchest of revenue. (If it's not this Gen it'll be another Gen time is on MS's side.)
6. Key develop heads have left many studios (including Sony own Studios) in high places, to come work at XGS for Next-gen software.

I don't think you guys need to worry about MS underestimating Sony. You better worry about Sony underestimating MS!

For Microsoft, this isn't about underestimating anyone...its about GROWING gaming and being in the best position to be ready for that expansion.

Correction MS added IOS phones (beta test) to Xcloud today so, now you can say they have access to that hardware too now!

This article should be the other way around.
Sony is king of the hill right now, sales wise, and first party title wise.
MS is the one in position with something to prove.
So if anything, Sony better not become complacent, resting on their laurels, bc MS surely isn't

I don't know why people keep talking "Next Gen". IF the rumors are true and the consoles will be backwards compatible for all previous gens, then there is no more generations. There are generations of games, but console generations vanish because I can play all my catalog forever.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.

yep. they confirmed early that the crude humor the games are famous for is leaving to be more inclusive for the woke. and the rumors about the new online could make or break them.

$100 game incoming, or the most likely scenario is they will just follow Nintendo going for $80 for the base game

Can't believe anyone thinks it'll be over 70. They want as many people on it as they can to sell shark cards. The only way that happens is if they have a $100 deluxe edition with 3 days early access. Which would probably be smart for them because it'd fly off the shelves
