Sony Still Thinking Big For 'Entry-Level' PS2

Like many companies in the market, Sony's attitude toward the economy seems best described as cautious optimism. SCEA sales and marketing VP Ian Jackson has been calling up retailers and hearing solid things, he said at BMO Capital Markets' Interactive Entertainment Conference yesterday.

"Our retail partners... I think if you were to call them in the last week or so, while they are hesitant and concerned somewhat about where the economy is going, actual unit numbers that are coming out of the video game sector are actually doing fairly well right now," he said.

If sony could get developers to do PS2 version of Wii titles, then drop the PS2 price considerably, then the PS2 can remain viable for some time to come, and actually help the PS3 out a bit.

In fact, as its open platform now, you don't even need any permission to release a title for the ps2 - you just do it.

What you have said is very true. But i cant help but think that the PS2 is somewhat a hinderance to the PS3's success. Because the system is still alive, with a huge library of games, some people dont really think it is necessary buying a PS3 yet. This will change in the future no doubt. But from the way i am seeing things, the PS3 will be Sony's best console yet. I have a positive feeling that it will surpass the PS2 in the long run.

In conclusion, Sony should actually reduce the amount of PS2 focused games and ensure ALL their first and 2nd party developers are focusing heavily on the PS3 and the PSP. That is where help is needed the most. The PS2 has had its time as the KING of consoles, so still attaching too much importance to it will hinder PS3 sales.

On the flip side of the coin however, the PS2 can be seen as the only console Sony has that can compete with the Nintendo Wii.

Sony would be wise to turn the PS2 into a wii. Give it a motion controller and put some casual games on it. Idk, just an idea.

Or they could kill it off and support the PS3 which might be a good idea.

That's 1 SEXY Main Photo at the Top, just LOOK at that SEXY PS2 Pad!!! ;-D

Ahh the PS2!!! ;-P AMAZING Console like the PS1 + PSP + Now the PS3!!! ;-P

or atleast tell the devs to stop making games for it.

I don't know really, only Sony knows what they are really doing, I mean they won two consoles wars in a row SO THEY MUST KNOW how to IMPROVE THE SALES OF THE PS3.

The Matrix6388d ago

Ok, you guys have me kind of convinced now that I think about it. I think Sony should stop supporting the PS2 within the next few months and focus mainly on the PS3. The last PS2 game I bought was probably God of War II and that was nearly 2 years ago.

I think Sony has to kill off PS2 in order to focus on PS3!!
Then and only then can the PS3 truly take off. I understand that the PS2 is a constant source of revenue for Sony, but they would do better if the focus was on the PS3!!!

edit : yeah kinda of like Shadow said

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

"Gaming’s Biggest Fighting Franchise"

Press X to (seriously) doubt.

Underrated comment. I used to hate that game so much that any time my siblings asked me to play it, I just picked Hom and shut myself down mid-match.

And then MK1 killed it again.

15 years went by so fast. I remember playing through the story mode at launch.
