Microsoft's Arsenal is Looking Strong

Michael Yannone: The Xbox Series X is coming out this year and seems to be quite more powerful than what the PlayStation 5 is offering hardware wise. Despite some of the similarities between both consoles, the future of the Xbox Series X seems bright as its main focus is to make gamers happy and here is how

We have no idea how powerful PS5 is. Let’s wait until Sony officially unveils PS5 specs before making judgement.

LeeFender2330d ago

There have been plenty of leaks and so far it seems to be quite less powerful on the GPU end of the things as well as RAM memory. We will see, but so far it's not looking like it and you can't deny facts.

Christopher2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

Because we know how all those rumors/leaks turn out in the end

https://www.polygon.com/201...

In the end, there's so much being thrown around with a few no-brainer bits and the rest being just added. This year is going to be another headache for rumor mill postings.

That would be idiotic of MS if true. Do you think that with Sony's current momentum combined with a cheaper price tag, that Xbox could even compete next gen?

solideagle2330d ago

history showed us that the most powerful never wins
- GameCube was powerful
- 360 was powerful
- Xbox X was powerful

Games is what matters, I am not suggesting MS is not making them but Sony has a great track record of great franchises :)

CaptainHenry9162330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

Even if it is true. Would it be a big difference though. If the series X is only 10 or 15 percent more powerful that's not saying much tbh especially if both consoles can achieve 4K 60fps. Exclusives will win the console war again 😁😂

AMD said they use 'fake' cpu id's etc to avoid leaks. So I'd not get too over confident.

Unspoken2329d ago

It is speculation until actual numbers are released. Good thing we have legitimate sources reviewing said leaks and come to some possible conclusions. And those conclusions are that Microsoft has a serious piece of gaming machinery coming out along with a slew of new games bolstered by it's new found services. Why get bent over what MS is doing?

Biden tells Iowans: 'We choose truth over facts'

Edito2329d ago

What facts? Send me the link Sony confirming what you are saying.

Thundercat772329d ago

Facts? Do you even know what is a fact?

rainslacker2329d ago

There are several logical reasons why it wouldn't make sense for MS to have a significantly more powerful console.

1. Price. MS can't release a system that costs a lot more than Sony's. The niche power user market isn't big enough to sustain them and bring them back marketshare.
2. Costs. Unless MS is willing to subsidize the XSX heavily at the start of the gen, a significant power increase is going to be a significant increase in cost to the consumer.
3. Lack of support. Even if MS is more powerful, PS hardware is still going to be ubiquitous. You won't have 3rd party flocking over to Xbox because it's the only place they can realize their vision. Maybe long term, this would be an advantage for MS, but mid-gens are now a possibility. Sony will always be a consideration, and if Xbox is more powerful, PS will just be the lowest common denominator. This means that all you get on Xbox is prettier graphics, and maybe some performance bumps unless MS outsells Sony and they become the lead platform. But, then you have to refer back to 1 and 2.
4. What's the point? Really? MS knows that power isn't going to bring them success.
5. It won't matter. Even assuming the rumors are true, it won't really change much. Sony is coming off a great generation. MS is not. Sony has a known track record, while MS is going to have an unknown value in their output next gen. MS lost about half their sales this gen, and making a more powerful console that makes them less competative in all the other areas of the console business is not the way to gain back market share.

Father__Merrin2329d ago

the ballpark is very high next gen even a 9.5tf gpu in a console will run everything at 4k with very very high settings

Mithan2329d ago (Edited 2329d ago )

Two GPU's that are both identical TeraFlops can exist, but one can be 50% faster than the other, just because of how its core's work. There are also different ways to rate Teraflops.

The point is, the 9.3Teraflops we hear for Sony and the 12 Teraflops we hear for Microsoft, might actually end up being the same performance in the end.

Ya, this is a lot for gamers who have no idea about how their systems actually work to get their heads around, but you can visit this article for more information:
https://www.eurogamer.net/a...

For example, AMD RDNA GPU's can provide a 25-35% performance increase over a GCN GPU, at the SAME rated "Teraflops" of power. It isn't cut and dried.

We need to wait and see, not that it will make difference in the end.

SolidGamerX2329d ago

Leaks aren't "facts" so its actually very easy to deny.

derek2329d ago (Edited 2329d ago )

Xbots are going to be real depressed when those supposed leaks turn out not to be reflective of the final spec.

darthv722330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

I don't know if its about "power" per say but it can be assumed MS is looking much stronger this next gen based on the fact they had a paltry effort this gen. They invested in more studios and are wanting to have much more deeper and engrossing games. That right there alone is an example of their arsenal (of games/studios) is looking strong.

Power is only so much, the bulk is what they do with that power and that is the part we have yet to see. I'll be honest, both Sony and MS did things very differently this gen. We didnt get the usual compliment of games from either. We only got one GT game from Sony and only one Halo game from MS. Two rather large and popular franchises that have yielded at least two or more games per console gen. And for some reason we only got one each. The MC collection is a remastering of existing games like the nathan drake collection, so it doesnt exactly count towards the usual release number.

Sony decided to change up how they wanted some of their staples to be represented, like GoW no longer being like a traditional GoW (and it worked) but they did much better than MS in terms of using this gen to try new stuff. Something MS knew they should have done but sat back on their laurels. Ms is not wanting to make those same mistakes but they have much ground to make up which is what they are striving to do with the recent changes in studios.

If anything, they are already off to a better start next gen than this gen and next gen hasnt even started yet. They just need the longevity and enthusiasm to go the distance instead of quick out of the gate and then a thud. Something Sony knows best is how to pace themselves for long lasting appeal.

sampsonon2329d ago

i will raise you one Insomniac Studio over all the studios MS bought.

2329d ago
averagejoe262329d ago

@rhy

Imagine thinking metacritic is what actually matters LOL

Sales and fandom are what matters.

Insomniac destroys both studios in that regard.

Keep clinging to meaningless numbers while the rest of us live in the real world.

TK-662329d ago (Edited 2329d ago )

@averagejoe26

"Sales and fandom are what matters."

In which case MS has already outperformed Insomniac has with Minecraft. Minecraft is among the most successful games of all time, and its fandom has created numerous in-game elements that go beyond anything Insomniacs fanbase has done. With that said this is irrelevant because your standard is dumb.

Quality > sales/fanbase

Even if the ps5 is 9.2 tflops or whatever, it’s nothing to be ashamed of. It’s a very powerful console.

Both consoles will pump out a lot of 4K60 games. Differences will be seen in smaller things such as ray tracing, and other scaleable features.

MasterCornholio2330d ago

There's rumors of the PS5 with around 7-8 Tflops of GPU power. Honestly the rumors are all over the place and I can't wait for the specs to get released.

Wasabi2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

@MasterCornholio

***"It's just best to wait for the official reveal at this point"***

So we shouldn't pay attention to the rumours?
............................. .............................. . .............................. . ...........

"There's rumors of the PS5 with around 7-8 Tflops of GPU power"

"To be fair there are leaks pointing towards a 499$ system that's similar in power to the Series X"

"The only rumored system that will be weak is the Lockhart"

"Some rumors state February. But even if that's not true it should be soon"

"Like I said there's conflicting reports between verified insiders and those AMD leaks"

"Both are rumored to be around 12TF from certain insiders and the difference won't be great between the two"

"Rumors pin it at around 599$-499$"

"I guess he forgot the new rumors that just came out from insiders"

............................. .............................. . .............................. . ...........

Seems like an odd stance from someone whose entire narrative seems to be based around them, no?

RazzerRedux2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

@Wasabi

He just said the rumors are all over the place. He is right. How does his "narrative" conflict with that?

Wasabi2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

@Razzer

**"He just said the rumors are all over the place. He is right. How does his "narrative" conflict with that?"**

That's not the post I quoted and You know that.

***"It's just best to wait for the official reveal at this point"***

MC is giving advice that "it's best not to listen to the leaks and rumours" whenever it relates to the Xbox Brand, whilst simultaneously promulgating rumours on every thread on the website whenever the rumours are positive in relation to PlayStation.

Clearly that's what was intended, Saijahn's reply to MC confirmed he read it the same way..

"I applaud waiting for facts but all the leaks are leading to the truth"

Like I said, the "narrative" is "wait for the reveal" and downplaying when news favours Xbox, but "Verified Insiders say" when the narrative is in favour of PS. It can't be both ways, it's one or the other.

If you don't see that, clearly there's an issue with comprehension here.

RazzerRedux2330d ago (Edited 2329d ago )

@Wasabi

Oh....you mean the quote where broke off half the quote and stuck it in your other list of quotes as if it wasn't part of the original?

"To be fair there are leaks pointing towards a 499$ system that's similar in power to the Series X. It's just best to wait for the official reveal at this point."

So stating it is best to wait for official reveal rather than believing the PS5 will have power similar to Series X is "promulgating rumours on every thread on the website whenever the rumours are positive in relation to PlayStation"?

And the other rumor he just stated of the PS5 with 7-8 TFlops of GPU power is less favorable to the PS5 than the more well-know rumors of 9 Tflops. How is that some kind of positive spin towards PS5 rumors?

MasterCornholio2329d ago (Edited 2329d ago )

@Wasabi

"Seems like an odd stance from someone whose entire narrative seems to be based around them, no?"

But I'm not accepting any of them as true until they are officially confirmed.

Nothing wrong with looking at rumors and speculating which is what many people are doing. But it's another thing to accept unconfirmed rumors as the truth and push then on to people. Which is what many have been doing.

@Razzer

I spend alot of time on Gaf and theres many different rumors circulating these systems right now.

There's even a new rumor about Sony using a fake form of Ray Tracing in the PS5. Heck the more positive one states that the system is only 9.2 Tflops because there's a dedicated RT tracing chip in it. And another rumor of a butterfly GPU set up in the system which would give it 72 CUs in total.

Like I said rumors are all over the place and I can't wait for the official confirmation from Microsoft and Sony. When it comes to discussions people will pick the rumors that suit their narratives. But when the specifications are officially revealed you can't pick and choose the information since everything else will be false. Then we can have real discussions on the actual hardware of the systems. That's what I'm looking forward to.

Wasabi2329d ago (Edited 2329d ago )

@Razzer

**"Oh....you mean the quote where broke off half the quote and stuck it in your other list of quotes as if it wasn't part of the original?"**

You mean the quote directly above, visible for all to see. I think people are intelligent enough to make the link Razzer, It's not like it's hidden lol.

**"So stating it is best to wait for official reveal rather than believing the PS5 will have power similar to Series X is "promulgating rumours on every thread on the website whenever the rumours are positive in relation to PlayStation"?"**

Absolutely love the way you are ignoring every other quote on the post as well as MC's comment history in some kind of futile attempt to disprove what I'm saying. Take a look for yourself through his previous comments and tell me I'm wrong, lol.

**"And the other rumor he just stated of the PS5 with 7-8 TFlops of GPU power is less favorable to the PS5 than the more well-know rumors of 9 Tflops. How is that some kind of positive spin towards PS5 rumors?"**

Haha, again - you're ignoring the core of the facts and concentrating on a couple of comments made when MC was on the back foot due to being faced with comments from users actually in the know about the Ensaka leaks.

Like I said - Take a look through MC's previous comments and tell me that I'm wrong.

RazzerRedux2329d ago

@MasterCornholio

Yeah, seems obvious that some are becoming obsessed with these rumors and apparently, anyone who posts them. I was about to reply to you asking where you got this "7-8 Tflops of GPU power" rumor from when I came across all the paranoia above. lol.....geez, can we just get Sony and Microsoft to announce all their specs and prices now and get over this silly madness?

KillBill2329d ago

What... but Xbox Series X has ray tracing too. So how can you comment on it being the difference? Do you even know what you are arguing about?

I applaud waiting for facts but all the leaks are leading to the truth. The PS5 will be significantly underpowered compared to the series x.

We can accept the rumors and leaks of a 399 price point but not one of it lacking power? Crazy

MasterCornholio2330d ago

To be fair there are leaks pointing towards a 499$ system that's similar in power to the Series X. It's just best to wait for the official reveal at this point.

2329d ago
Kumakai2330d ago (Edited 2330d ago )

If the leaks are true it’s 9.2 TFLOPS w/ 440 gb/s gddr6 ram bandwidth and 36 CUs clocked at 2 ghz on ps5

Series X will be 12.x TFLOPS w/ 512-560 gb/s gddr6 ram bandwidth and 56 CUs clocked at 1.7ghz

IF TRUE that puts the X about 30% more powerful.

I’m also confident ms will release a cheaper console with a bit less kit and call it the Series S (project Lockhart)

stuna12329d ago

I totally agree with what you are saying, but I also think everyone should exercise caution concerning these so called leaks lest they forget what turned out to be the exact opposite when it came to project Orbis (PS4) and project (Durango) Xbox1.

Right now I think a lot of misinformation is being spread around and it's likely due to trying to push these console makers being forced to reveal their hands as to what really is true.

DarXyde2329d ago

Yeah, it's been pure speculation so far. People ran with the rumored specs which are still pretty good, but seriously fly in the face of every preceding rumor. There have been some jaw dropping showings behind closed door events apparently, and 9.2TF falls quite short of the original statements regarding Sony AND Microsoft planning to compete with Stadia's power (11TF). That was stated a while ago, and I cannot imagine that they would not rise to that occasion. On top of that, AMD uses fake chip IDs and Tidux, who's pretty reputable, said it's higher.

I wouldn't underestimate Sony here. And really, have people seen what Sony can accomplish with 1.82TF? 4TF?

DigitalHope2330d ago

This same thing happened before the start of the PS4/Xbox1 gen. Sony stayed quiet, didn’t say much of anything and Microsoft talked and talked and everything was about the power of the box and the cloud and every article was about Microsoft and how much they were puffing out their chest and peacocking. Then reality hit and Sony came out more powerful and cheaper. It feels like history is repeating itself, sort of. Microsoft is clearly in a better position than last time and has better leadership this time around, but talk is just talk and we don’t really know anything. Anyone taking Sony’s silence as weakness is a damn fool.

What is your point?
I understand there is a “market” for the console...
But outside of the early years of the 360 and the monopoly they pulled per third party games, what has Microsoft offered?
A declining and far from its former glory halo, gears?
Forza? A repeating game engine from 10 years ago?
Crackdown 3?😂😂
Power of the cloud?
The base Xbox one could possibly offEr 4k? 😂😂
The articles scientifically breaking down how far/close we have to sit from our TVs to see the difference in power from the ps4?

Great.. you do not care about any pr fluff to keep Microsoft relevant.. I hope next gen works out for you.
Me? IF Microsoft makes something worth while, I play it on my pc. Sure, Microsoft still gets money.. but I would rather it be for a game worth while over buying two/three console variants just to keep up with third party games this gen.

dveio26d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
