Interesting. I wonder if these extra buttons are going on the PS5 controller by default.

The Wood2358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

I was thinking the same thing when I first watched the video. We cant say competition isn't good in this case. If the rumours are true that sony may also be releasing two skus, a pro model may come with a pro pad in the box.

OB1Biker2358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

What rumour about 2 ps5? The only one I saw was a 'journalist' throwing that randomly in japanese while streaming a game.
We should gave some leak by now like the Lockart

timotim2358d ago

It seems unnecessary to me. Why create that circular piece in the middle that will only get in the way on your fingers and takes up battery just for a screen, when they could have simple made a native app for the PS4 to handle the assign functions?

darthv722358d ago

I like the idea of this little remapper but I feel they need to add an in game option to remap because flipping this over to do it seems cumbersome. no doubt they will incorporate something like this in the DS5 and this may be a sign that lets you use a DS4 on a PS5 with this little add-on much like the xbox controllers will be cross compatible between series x and the xbo x.

UltraNova2357d ago (Edited 2357d ago )

I see this as Sony wanting to officially try customization and modular designs.

I don't get why they decided to put a screen on the back of the controller thought... maybe its easier to take the attachment off, change settings and put it back on? I don't know...

That said, I can definitely see them releasing a regular DS5 and a Pro one (Elite-esq) at launch. Who knows, the DS5 Pro might be included with the PS5 Pro that will be simultaneously released with the regular ps5? I for one would love that!

kneon2358d ago

I expect so as it's kind of weird introducing something like this so late in the cycle. Maybe this will be needed to play some future PS5 releases on the PS4, or at least with a DS4 on a PS5.

Double_O_Revan2358d ago

Also wondering if they do have those buttons by default on PS5, if this attachment is to help with Cross Gen games controls.

Muzikguy2358d ago

That is pretty sweet. I'd map the options button to one of them.

Segata2358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

Not according to the patent and dev kit photos. DS5 looks mostly the same on all sides with minor differences. Mic added and a little fatter but otherwise looks the exact same as a reg DS4.

rainslacker2358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

Since this is an official product from Sony itself, its immediately what I thought.

I question the oled screen on the back though. Doesnt seem to make much sense for a new controller to do that, when one of the front would be more practical for its purpose, and allow for more flexibility for implementation.

Also makes me wonder if this means that some next gen games may still run on the ps4, because otherwise, outside of the gamers who would buy something like an elite controller, it seems pointless.

OB1Biker2358d ago

Upgrading your ds4 to play on your ps5 makes sense.

darthv722358d ago

I wonder why they couldnt flip the screen around so it is in the front? As it is you got to flip the controller over if you want to remap the buttons. I think they will eventually get an onscreen app to do that but for now it just seems cumbersome to keep flipping it over to make your changes. Plus i too think this will open up the ability to use a DS4 on a PS5.

Knushwood Butt2358d ago

I'd probably assign L3 to it for games that require you to run. I hate pushing down on the sticks.

Also, wow, there sure are a lot of xbox fans commenting in here.

badz1492358d ago

Interesting indeed but...why so late in this gen?? the attachment port has always been there from the start but we are only getting this now?

same with the extra port on the Vita. they clearly had a plan for it but there was nothing till the end.

StoneyYoshi2357d ago (Edited 2357d ago )

I think they still released it so late because there is still a huge install base regardless and it's a pretty fair price id say. Also seeing as how the PS5 controller supposedly is pretty identical in design from the DS4, it's going to be cross compatible with the new gen system.

GameStallion2357d ago

I hope so. I hate thumbstick clicking so much. I got a Scuff controller with paddles & loved it while it lasted. Build quality combined with crappy customer service was incredibly poor & frustrating for a $200+ controller though.

Wasabi2358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

This is a great idea, much cheaper than a Pro / Elite style controller whilst still providing loads of added functionality.
Loving the OLED screen too.

Enturax2358d ago

From what I understand it isn't really an extra button, you map an existing ones there, and you can't combine two buttons in one. Kinda pointless.

UnHoly_One2358d ago

That's how all of the controllers that have paddle buttons work. They are not new buttons, just a way to put the same regular buttons in a different place for convenience.

Italiano12345672357d ago

Doesnt make sense to me when u can remap any button u want already in the ps4 settings. I seem confused

StoneyYoshi2357d ago (Edited 2357d ago )

They really help for competitive shooters so players can keep their thumbs on the sticks so they don't have to lose any control over the character to hit the vault/jump button, weapon swap/reload or even crouching and stuff like that.

KillBill2357d ago

@UnHoly_One - that doesn't appear to be the case with all such controllers. Here is a picture of Mass Effect button setup for Elite Controller and it maps the "Power 2" option which is pressing RB and LB at the same time to a single paddle on the back.

MasterCornholio2357d ago

Pretty sure they there are plenty of people who just want the paddles but not the premium price tag that most elite style controllers have.

Neonridr2357d ago

why have an OLED screen? An unnecessary drain on the battery. Could have just been a regular one if they needed it.

THC CELL2358d ago

This is a much better idea than paying 100s for a controller

The Wood2358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

yeah but that elite pad is more than just two additional buttons. It's price is stupidly high though...more than some of their consoles

Sgt_Slaughter2358d ago

The Elite controller is stupidly high for a controller that has a lot of problems (ones that they didn't even fix for the V2 controller which is even more expensive)

CaptainHenry9162358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

I know right. I wouldn't never spend over $100 for a controller

fiveby92358d ago

I agree the XB Elite controller is crazy expensive at retail price. I was luck to get the 1st gen XB Elite as an open box special for $75. I love the controller much more than the standard XB controller. I also love my DS4 controllers. I will definitely be interested in perhaps trying one of those DS4 back button addons. Good to see the option is available to a generic DS4 controller.

battlegrog2358d ago

For sure but many people do. Thats why they do it, theres a demand. It is an amazing controller but for sure super expansive

FinalFantasyFanatic2357d ago

I think the base price for console controllers is bad enough as it is, there would have to be some compelling reasons to make the price tage worth it for me.

DaDrunkenJester2358d ago

Just all depends on how much of that functionality you use. The Elite is worth the money if you enjoy and use all of its features. If you just use it normally with just 2 paddles, then it's not worth it and this accessory would be more worth it.

UnHoly_One2358d ago

Everyone has a different idea of value.

I use my Elite with only 1 paddle and I love it.

Neonridr2357d ago

yes but those really expensive controllers let you customize more than just a couple of extra buttons. You can adjust sensitivity of the thumbsticks, control how the force is applied to them, etc.

Yes because my controller doesn't lose power fast enough as it is. Let's add a powered peripheral to it.

Wasabi2358d ago

@darklaw

***"Yes because my controller doesn't lose power fast enough as it is. Let's add a powered peripheral to it"***

Surely if you're using an adapter to gain a competitive edge and elevate your gaming in multiplayer then you'll be taking advantage of the ability to connect the controller via USB to reduce latency anyway?

telekineticmantis2358d ago

How does it give you a competitive edge?

Nitrowolf22358d ago

@telekineticmantis

PS4 offers a low latency option iirc when connected via usb, you can switch the communication from bluetooth to usb in settings

Wasabi2358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

@tele

***"How does it give you a competitive edge?"***

It allows you to assign functions like jump to the back buttons without having to switch to claw grip / bumper jumper configs allowing a player to never have to take thumbs off control sticks. In practice this equates to way more control in competitive multiplayer when jumping + shooting in FPS games for example.

It's the reason many competition gamers on console use Scuff / Third party controllers.

Wasabi2358d ago (Edited 2358d ago )

@FGHFU

***"the bt connection is said to be faster"***

That's very interesting - if this is the case and those results are accurate then I struggle to understand the point of being able to switch to USB communication vs BT via the menu option. That would make anything other than leaving the controller in bluetooth mode but charging by USB cable the only viable option. If this was the case what would be the point of Sony even enabling the option if it made for an inferior experience?

I suppose it could possibly be enabled to mitigate wireless interference over bluetooth and ensure consistent performance. Strange.

Edit (From the reddit testing linked)

***"Lowest input lag isn't everything. I also talked about input consistency in the video, where the DS4 does better when using it wired rather than Bluetooth"***

rainslacker2358d ago

Bluetooth can be susceptible to radio interference, so some may get better results from a wired connection.

darklaw2357d ago

What a ridiculous notion. How many people out of the 100 million that own PS4 need to "Plug In" to gain that microsecond of time in their competitive gameplay? The human body cannot even react that fast. If you want a competitive edge then you'd use a PC and tweak the hell out it, not plug in your ps4 controller for a "speed Boost".

Wasabi2357d ago (Edited 2357d ago )

@darklaw

***"What a ridiculous notion"***

I find your comment ridiculous, this is not a notion it is a widely accepted fact amongst competitive gamers, wired connections on the whole provide a lower latency, more consistent connection.

***"How many people out of the 100 million that own PS4 need to "Plug In" to gain that microsecond of time in their competitive gameplay?"***

Why does the number matter? Clearly many players care as Scuff, Nacon, Astro and now PlayStation offer options for competitive gamers - with regards to plugging in, clearly both Sony and Microsoft value the ability to plug in and offer USB communication vs BT as both offer the option on their respective consoles.

***"The human body cannot even react that fast"***

How are human reactions relevant to this discussion, did you even think before you wrote this comment, the human factor is irrelevant we are talking about reduced latency through hardware:

All numbers are examples:

Human Reaction Time (50 milliseconds) + Wireless Controller reaction time (10 milliseconds) = 60 Milliseconds
Human Reaction Time (50 milliseconds) + Wired Controller reaction time (2 milliseconds) = 52 Milliseconds

Regardless of human reaction time - the lower latency connection is faster as well as more consistent due to less interference due to wireless crosstalk. It's the same reason that LAN is preferred Vs Wireless for online play.

***"If you want a competitive edge then you'd use a PC and tweak the hell out it"***

Why would a gamer that wants to play on PS4 use a PC?

Kribwalker2358d ago

that was my thought. Hopefully it has its own battery.

I’d rather them just go all out and release an elite style controller. I’m still using my OG elite right now and love it. I’d happily pay for an elite PS controller with better battery life, and better made.

Christopher2358d ago

Nacon, Razer, and Astro have all put out certified pro controllers. I prefer the Astro C40, very solid (like an Xbox controller) and you can swap pieces around for the layout you want. These options have been available for years.

FinalFantasyFanatic2357d ago

Actually, I wonder why they haven't come up with a way to strap an expansion battery to the PS4 controllers or even an elite version that includes paddles and a bigger battery? was there a technical reason? Or did Sony think the demand wouldn't be there if they made these things.

Stanjara2358d ago

This is great! You also don't have to order that expensive costume controllers from Scuff and Beaver.

BlackDoomAx2357d ago

Strike pack. Better, cheaper.

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose33d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE33d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername33d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy33d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde33d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8633d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8633d ago (Edited 33d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
