The Xbox Series X is basically a PC

For a long time now, Microsoft has been going out of its way to downplay the “box” part of “Xbox.” Whether it’s pledging to bring all of its first-party titles to PC, releasing some of them to platforms like Steam and the Nintendo Switch, launching its Game Pass service for Windows, or pushing xCloud streaming, the message has been clear: you don’t have to buy an Xbox to play Xbox games.

But obviously, Microsoft still plans to make Xboxes. The question, then, is this: why would anyone buy one? What is the relevance of dedicated Xbox hardware when Microsoft wants the Xbox platform to be everywhere?

I'm mega hyped for The Series X, getting it day one. I'm a console Gamer only and always will be just my own personal preference.

YEP4142364d ago

I agree!! Me too🔥🔥🔥 🔥 day 1🙌🏾

bouzebbal2364d ago

I'll get xcloud to play the interesting games instead.
It's really not appealing when it doesn't have exclusives and especially not when all games will be played anywhere and steamed..

I too am a multi-console gamer only. Xbox4life

medman2364d ago

Me as well. I usually buy multiple consoles each generation, but this current gen I skipped the xbox one. I'll be back in with the series x.

RangerWalk2672364d ago

I always buy a PlayStation and Xbox. The next generation won't change that. I have my Pro for the few exclusives I enjoy ( God of War, The Show, Spider-Man, Horizon Zero Dawn, and The Last of Us) also sports titles.
Xbox X for the exclusives and EVERYTHING else.
In my opinion... It's foolish to be brand loyal. You're making yourself miss out on so many options.

LOGICWINS2364d ago

Last time I was this hyped for a console was the OG Xbox. The Series X is something special indeed. Can’t wait to see how that new Viking AC game runs on it!

All consoles are basically PCs. Even the switch is a tablet PC. Consoles have been chasing the PC for decades and dev kits are fundamentally PCs as well. I dont get what the problem is.

Ninjamonkey822364d ago (Edited 2364d ago )

The last console that can call itself truely that was the Ps3, All steps are now to try close the gap to PC. The new gen will be the nearest they have come, But as a platform PC is ever evolving and its by the month change comes. Xbox and Sony still will have 5-10 year cycle respectively planned for stability and its what draws a console audience.

gamer78042364d ago

the closest to a pc is the xbox right now, it runs windows using hyper vm's on pc hardware, then comes ps4 with its os's that can run some apps on pc hardware, then there is the switch which really is more of a mobile chip that has nearly a purely gaming OS.

nucky642364d ago

i suppose the "gap" that you're talking about is visuals? i don't really care about that - i want amazing game experiences and sony has brought that over the previous 20+ years. so many exclusives on the playstation platform that you can NOT get on pc - so i'm fine with what sony is doing as long as they continue with their great, exclusive content.

AspiringProGenji2364d ago (Edited 2364d ago )

TVs, phones, Media players, they all use PC parts nowadays and you could say they are basically PCs, but they don’t look like PCs. Does having PC parts warrant any other device to look like one? Imagine having a phone that looks like a PC case “just because it is basically a mini PC.”

I personally don’t like this design but respect for MS for still going for it. It is what’s inside that matters, but consoles should still be and feel like consoles even if they now use AMD and NVIdia tech in it.

Gaming4Life19812364d ago (Edited 2364d ago )

I think the design is different and the thing I dont like about it is that you have to put the disc in vertically. I'm not sure if you can lay this system on its side but I've had problems in the past with games in the vertical position.

I can see why people dont like the design cause it's pretty basic in design but I think this would look good in anyone's home.

As you said its what's inside that matters and this system sounds really powerful, hopefully it wont cost more than $499 cause that's my deal breaker on consoles. Even though I use the xbox all access program so I'm just going to give my x back and get this next year.

Not all PS4 owners (including myself) own a PC for gaming. I game on my Pro and Xbox X.
My PC is for work related tasks.

The design is ugly and hilarious for a console. It doesn't standout either

Chris122364d ago

The design is simple and great. Love it.

Welcome to the XTANGLE SERIES “S” (Stretched) 🤣 It'll be cool if you can change the graphics card

"It doesn't stand out either"

That's the point. Not a fan of flashy consoles. It's perfect for me.

CaptainHenry9162364d ago (Edited 2364d ago )

Yep won't standout out across the world and the name is confusing. Am I buying a low end PC or a high end PC? It doesn't look like a console? I'm confuse. Should I just buy a PC. So confusing lol. The consumer: What's the difference between this and a PC? Is this the Xbox one or Xbox series one

SyntheticForm2364d ago

It's really not that confusing, dude. You're just looking for a reason - any reason to malign it. Honestly, if you're that "confused" then I would say you probably weren't that bright to begin with.

Mercedes Benz uses a letter class system for their cars to make distinctions in quality, fuel efficiency, luxury, etc. What Microsoft is doing with Xbox Series X is much like that. I anticipate something like a Z or Y class going forward, where the letter speaks to the capability and specialty.

I hate using this term, but... it isn't rocket science, and it makes sense.

Dissidia2364d ago

It doesn't stand out? Everyone is talking about it because it stands out for a console. Including you. Yes even taking the time to comment and call it ugly

UnholyLight2364d ago

I hope it stays this way. I really find I enjoy the console experience much more than PC...especially when playing FPS type games.

drunkenspy0072364d ago

Consoles are computers yes, but I wouldn't consider them PCs. Xbox and gaming on windows is the same platform while Nintendo and Sony run their own proprietary platforms. It's why as someone who PCs games a lot, I never saw the need for an Xbox since I could play the same games on my PC.

Mozillayaseen2364d ago (Edited 2364d ago )

Yes, they are basically a PC but PC will always be superior no matter how long consoles chases PC it will never catch up to PC.

SyntheticForm2364d ago

Consoles are closed and fixed; of course they can't "catch up" to something that can always be amended.

Muzikguy2364d ago

This is a pointless statement. Can you modify a console? No? Ok then....

They are coded more "to the metal" and therefore get more out of their systems though. Come on, it's almost 2020. Everyone knows a console is a console and a PC is a PC

Kyizen2364d ago

First off the article is Pro Xbox Series X. But consoles are not PCs because a PC can do so much more it is not dedicated to gaming. It is how the Xbox one X ajd PS4 Pro which use low end PC hardware can push out amazing graphics and games. Faster cpu/GPU pipelines less memory used by OS such as Windows. Ect.

ginsunuva2363d ago

There's no problem. You're just getting defensive for no reason.

The author means that Xbox is becoming a software service available on all PCs. Then these hardware "Xboxes" are just nicely packaged PCs as an alternative to a custom PC. So the gap between a Steambox and Xbox is closing.

"The Xbox Series X is basically a PC".
Consoles have been mid-tier PC's everytime.

djplonker2364d ago (Edited 2364d ago )

Factor in the cost of 8 years of plus / live and you are paying higher-end pc prices.

I might make the switch to pc as my go to multiplayer platform starting next gen so I am not paying twice to play online...... (broadband + plus or live)

timotim2364d ago

SMH...ALL modern day consoles are basically a PC...they are PCs with the OS and operation centered around playing games instead of multifunction...

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio36d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing35d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9236d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit35d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing35d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9235d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
