Left 4 Dead Demo Underwhelming

It seems no matter which website you go to, they all shower praise on the latest game by Valve entitled Left 4 Dead. As a zombie-and video game enthusiast-I assumed this would become one of my favorite games. It sounded like a match made in heaven. Unfortunately, I came away from the demo very underwhelmed.

I wasn't impressed.I'll get it on PC where it has a chance to be decent.

JimmyJames706387d ago

I wasn't either. After reading several glowing reviews, I finally downloaded the demo and played it, and was like, what was that?

I guess I need to try the multiplayer...?

PirateThom6387d ago

The game might as well not have a single player.

It's made for co-op.

I still don't like it though, mostly for that reason.

MrWeymes6387d ago

In my opinon, if Left 4 Dead had a truly enjoyable single player campaign that had more of a cinematic flare to it, as well as the multiplayer, it would be a much more enjoyable game. It feels like half of a game to me.

Rhoic6386d ago

Really now? Underwhelming? Obviously it wasn't.. because you're getting it confused with a FULL GAME.

"It feels like half of a game to me." -Fail much?

JonahFalcon6387d ago

Yeah, some dumbass blog by someone who hates PC/360.

6387d ago
MrWeymes6387d ago

Actually, I enjoy most of the exclusives on my Xbox 360. If I thought that the Left 4 Dead demo was great, then I would have said so. My opinion wouldn't have been different if it were a PS3 exclusive.

thor6387d ago

I found it underwhelming too. It's not about being a fanboy at all. I don't know why people automatically assume this. I have never understood the rather extreme hype for this game, and after playing it, it seems quite shallow. I put my full impressions in the forum.

Hellgiver6387d ago

I disagree actually. I found the demo unbelievably enjoyable. I keep going back through it with random people online, and whenever I can enough friends together. I absolutely love it. I was mad when they pushed back the release day so much past Gears 2, since I had been following Left 4 Dead pretty closely, and I thought I'd never need to play another multiplayer game. The problem is Gears 2 isn't as great as I was hoping it would be. I can't see Left 4 Dead disappointing me if this demo is any indication of what I can expect.

Jack Bauer6387d ago

i found it to be very underwhelming and no fun, i cancelled my preorder after playing the demo.

JsonHenry6387d ago

Good thing I can form my own opinion without reading others first. I LOVE the demo and have already pre-purchased the game through STEAM.

Maybe he is a sissy boy and pees his pants when the hordes come after him? Or maybe he is just not a team player and this game punishes those who do not play as a team.

MrWeymes6387d ago

It's not my fault that I can't control my bladder. In all seriousness though, I like the way you have to rely on your team members.(you would know this if you read the article.) The multiple flaws just made the demo underwhelming in my opinion.

Pika-pie6387d ago

I was also disappointed with the demo. Mainly the graphics :(

I can see it being a lot of fun with friends over XBLA but as a single player experience it didnt impress me at all. And after such a great opening movie!

poopface16387d ago (Edited 6387d ago )

shooting the zombies with the shotgun is great. My pc isnt isnt even that good but it ran it great. dont think ill buy it but would get the PC version cause I dont have my 360 anymore.

But this game is going to be good on PC and xbox 360.

No Way6387d ago

I rather enjoyed the demo.. I couldn't imagine playing it in single player, though, so thankfully it's multiplayer.

I had a blast playin this game with a few friends. Try that sht on Expert, that is crazy..

killyourfm6387d ago

The game isn't fun as a single player experience because it's NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY YOURSELF.

It's called "Left 4 Dead" which is a play on words, emphasizing the NUMBER 4, not the word "for".

It's a coop game. If coop isn't for you, don't bash it. Just move on.

Bodhi6387d ago

Have any of you played this game? Have any of you who actually played the game play it with friends? Have any of you who actually played the game play it with friends on Expert mode?

This game is meant for you to play with friends on Expert.

This game is the Multiplayer GotY 2008. I'm calling it now. What flaws are you guys really seeing here other then graphics? I'll list the great points about the game:

+ Easy, and good controls on the 360, even better on the PC
+ Godlike gameplay, it's not every game you have 20+ zombies sprinting at you
+ Great teamwork, great fun with friends, loads of laughs too
+ Awesome level design
+ Eerie and spooky music and sound effects
+ Film grain filter actually gives the game a movie feel
+ Good variety of weapons, and zombie Bosses
+ Future community and mods guaranteed
+ Versus mode, 4v4 Zombie vs Survivor mode
+ AI director makes infinite replayability a reality.
+ Smart AI, a Hunter that misses you will scurry away, same with Smokers, nothing ever gets stuck to any geometry on the map.

- Good graphics, not great, numbers of zombies on screen forgive the graphics
- Not enough levels in the demo

This game will get 9s all across the board and it deserves it. This is a Valve game, expect quality, expect massive community, expect support.

Someone please list flaws, I'm not looking hard enough am I? I'll slowly walk through every level this time, like all of you were.

Tubby McNutsack6387d ago

Wasn't impressed either. As soon as I saw the graphics I deleted the demo from my hard drive.

JonahFalcon6387d ago (Edited 6387d ago )

Um, yeah. Sure. Game won't look good on a 90mhz Pentium 1.

Everyone, meet the author of the blog post. (laugh)

narked6387d ago

game is great if u can run it on 16xQ AA. and everything max.

MrWeymes6387d ago

This article is about the Xbox 360 version of Left 4 Dead. If it looks good on the PC, that's great, but irrelevant for Xbox 360 owners that don't play games on the PC.

No Way6387d ago

So, you based the entirety of the demo on just the graphics..? You suck. Haha.

Uh, well, that sucks for you.. You've prolly never experienced some of the good ol' classic games, eh?

Not all games with the best graphics are the best games available..

SixZeroFour6387d ago

W O W...damn graphic wh*res

honestly, if you seriously think that graphics is what make a great game then i feel sorry for you on all the great games that you would be missing out on

the gameplay was so fun with friends on expert, so many ROTFLMFAO moments...seriously

pwnsause6387d ago

how is it 360 exclusive if its on the PC? you comment failed hard like this F-14 tomcat crash

JonahFalcon6387d ago

Well, technically, PC versions are not console versions. Hence, console exclusive. (Otherwise, Sony's in big trouble having Microsoft OS on their Viao computers.)

However, the PS3 version will be coming out sometime in 2009, but not developed by Valve.

Tubby McNutsack6387d ago

360 = Platform
PC = Yes, I know it's hard for you to believe, but it's a platform too, hence, multi-platform.

Bodhi6386d ago (Edited 6386d ago )

Exclusive = Games exclusive to a certain console or platform

Multiplatform = Games for all or most or more than one consoles (PC, 360, PS3, Wii)

Platform = Any platform on which you can play a game 360, PS3, Wii)

Console = A gaming system specifically made for gaming on a TV on a console (360, PS3, Wii)

Platform Exclusive = Games exclusive to only one platform (PC, 360, PS3, Wii)

Console Exclusive = Games exclusive to a certain console (360, PS3, Wii)

Left 4 Dead = Console exclusive (360), Multiplatform (PC, 360)

It's not really that hard of a concept, I'm sure most of you are considering the PC as a console which it is not.

OG Left 4 Dead Creator Announces He's Working On A New Multiplayer Shooter

Following Left 4 Dead's undying legacy, the developer of the game shares that a new likewise project is in the works.

ZycoFox253d ago

L4D had potential to be so much more. The issue was that the release of the second game just one year after the first added a decent amount of content which was much needed, then there was nothing except for a few small content updates spread far between.

This is one of the only games I can think of that benefits from a yearly release, or at least a yearly DLC so it doesn't split the player base.

The games just got too samey and lack content.. it's a shame they didn't keep up the pace, I know you can download new maps but it doesn't change the overall game or add new enemies etc.

-Foxtrot253d ago

Regardless of what Valve officially said they didn’t need to do a sequel that fast, things could have easily been added to the original overtime and the sad thing is the characters and atmosphere of the original was better than the sequel. I mean we went from the dark, grim city streets to the sunny south where we are hitting massive menacing tanks with frying pans.

I honestly believe Valve killed it because it was a Turtle Rock game at its core and Valve wanted it to be known as an Valve only IP moving forward

They even brought back the original survivors just to kill one of them off (even though in the original they were heading North to Canada)

JEECE253d ago

Lol L4D2 came out in 2009, and you are saying it should have been a 2020s type live service game. It's just a great game, it doesn't need battle passes and skins.

This attitude is why devs are afraid to make any multiplayer game that isn't a live service.

Jingsing252d ago (Edited 252d ago )

Also in these current economic times live services is just a no go when people are being more frugal with their purchasing power. I don't do any subscription services anymore which means I can't do multiplayer on a console even if I wanted too. Something the console manufacturers should think about if they want to get players to even try their online stuff.

Looking Back At 2008, An Unbelievably Incredible Year Of Video Game Releases

Huzaifa from eXputer: "2008 was home to the likes of Call of Duty: World at War, Dead Space, GTA 4, Far Cry 2, Left 4 Dead, and many other hits, which is outright remarkable."

ChasterMies746d ago

Some of these low paid video game “news” writers weren’t born before 2007.

just_looken745d ago

Here here

Those that were around before 2000's i am sure are like me that think we entered a world of non readers or those that follow without question.

I can not wait to see fallout 3 a goty game even though it was about water with non content until you add the dlc/updates then you got the performance/crashing

CrimsonWing69746d ago

I don’t think anything can compare to 2023

lucasnooker746d ago

1998 - the best year in gaming! Metal gear solid, crash bandicoot 3, medievil, half life, ocarina of time, thief, tenchu, resident evil 2, Spyro, tomb raider 3, oddworld abes exodus, banjo kazooie.

It was a different breed of a gaming era. You’ll never understand what it was like back then. The aura of gaming, it was different!

KyRo746d ago (Edited 746d ago )

I second this. Gaming was a lot more varied and fun than it is today. I'm 35 so getting on compared to some here but I got to see all the changes from NES up to now but I've never felt so disappointed in any generation than I have this current gen. I was expecting more from this generation rather than prettier versions of games that came before it. Game mechanics have become so refined that alot of games feel the same and has done for a while now.

Maybe it's time to have a break for a while. I love gaming but I don't feel I get much fun in the traditional sense out of it anymore.

CrimsonWing69746d ago (Edited 746d ago )

Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil 2, Abe’s Exodus, and Ocarina of Time are the only things from that list that I liked.

Here’s the 2023 game releases that I personally liked… and big releases that I didn’t care for:

- Dead Space Remake
- Wo Long Dynatsy
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Diablo 4
- Fire Emblem Engage
- Hogwarts Legcay
- Street Fighter 6
- Hi-Fi Rush
- Like a Dragon: Ishin
- Octopath Traveler 2
- Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters
- Final Fanatsy XVI (actually ended up not liking this, but it was still a big deal release)
- Baldur’s Gate 3
- Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon
- Lies of P
- Mortal Kombat 1
- Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
- Starfield (Ended up hating this one, but big release)
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (I’m an old-school Zelda fan, but didn’t really enjoy this game)
- Alan Wake 2

I mean, honestly I’ve never seen a year of major IP releases like that, ever.

Profchaos746d ago (Edited 746d ago )

Isn't it just a generational thing realistically.

I've been gaming since way back and I some of my favourite games go as far back as the late 80s for me each generation has a year or two of game changing releases one after another before an inevitable dry spell.

I kind of agree gaming had a different feel games hit different because we didn't have the internet nothing got spoiled and you really had to put in the effort to beat a puzzle which could set entire groups of people looking for a solution. But most importantly games were experimental and not as cookie cutter as today even basics like controls were not universal today r2 is shoot l2 is ads garunteed you can't deviate from that in a shooter back then it could of been square, R1 or R1 and circle nothing was standard.

But as time moves on a new generation picks up their controller they are going to be interested in different things that PS1 demo disc with the t Rex blew our primitive 16 bit brains back on launch but to kids today it's laughable.
The new gen of kids coming into to hobby seem to value different things to us there seems to be a huge focus on online play, streamers, gaming personalities, and social experiences, convience of digital downloads. To me I value none of that but that's ok like my parents not liking the band's I would listen to its just the natural cycle.

Gameseeker_Frampt745d ago

Just about every year in the 7th generation was great and something we most likely won't experience again.

2009 for example had Assassin's Creed 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins, Uncharted 2, Halo 3: ODST, Killzone 2, Borderlands, Bayonetta, and Demon's Souls to name a few.

just_looken745d ago

It still amazes me we got over 7 rockstar games ps2/ps3 but 3 for the ps3/ps4/ps5

Dragon age 1-3 and mass effect 1-3 in 7ish years what a generation.

Most Offensive Video Games That Would Never Cut It Today

Times are changing, and these games would have never been made in today's climate.

wealthofgeeks.com
thorstein784d ago (Edited 784d ago )

Every single time someone uses this phrase whether it's music, movies, books, comics, video games, etc it's always the same claim.

The ubiquitous "they" won't allow it to be made. And every decade these claims are made the claimant completely ignores all the "offensive" material that is published when the claim is made.

In ten years, you can write a new article about how you can't make games like Helldivers 2, Resident Evil VIII, Mortal Kombat I, Dragon's Dogma 2, Alan Wake 2 etc etc etc any more.

MrBaskerville783d ago

Yeah, people wouldn't be constantly outraged if there weren't games that people found enraging. The whole SBI discourse shit wouldn't be a thing if all games were inoffensive. A game like Starfield can make a guy froth at his mouth, so there will always be room for a list like this.

0hMyGandhi782d ago

Normally, I'd be inclined to agree with you, but there are massive caveats.
TV shows like Venture Bros, Ren and Stimpy, and Aqua Team wouldn't/couldn't be made today. Hell, Ren and Stimpy was a *children's* show, same thing with Rocko's Modern Life.

It's not for some arbitrary reason, either. It's branding and IP alignment. Companies are far more risk-averse than they were when I was kid in the 90's. Of course, you have companies coming out of the woodwork to hell spur on similar content, but remember: Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon and some incredibly provocative material.

And for movies? it's pretty obvious. American Pie/Wedding Crashers/Eurotrip among many other "raunch coms" have fallen out of style, and are absolutely outside what the modern day film industry is willing to stand by.
Ace Ventura 1 and 2, Dumb and Dumber, Freddy Got Fingered, Rat Race, Harold and Kumar, and Van Wilder follow suit.

Remember: I am not explicitly talking about films put onto streamers. I am talking wide-releases in actual theaters. Same thing goes for games: Carmageddon, Duke Nukem, Manhunt, Six Days In Fallujah (with their original concept), Hatred, and so on and so forth. Of course, I'd be inclined to mention most tactical shooters like Rainbow Six and Joint Ops as well, due to cultural sensitivity regarding *who* you are shooting and why.

And not all of it is bad (obviously). Tastes change, and perspectives change to fit the demographic.
I should add that I'm a lefty, living in L.A. Working in film.

thorstein782d ago

The Boys, Invincible, Jojo Rabbit, Deadpool, Gen V, Last of Us, Banshee... There are plenty of media being made today that people will claim "can't be made today".

Profchaos782d ago

Yeah but if you consider manhunt which was basically a snuff film could you seriously make that game with high than PS2 era graphics.

thorstein782d ago

The Outlast Trials just came out.

But the storyline of Manhunt was that you were executed. But then lived. And if you didn't do as you were told, you'd die. And the people you killed were not innocents.

It was all filmed by a psychopath.

As we speak GTA VI is being finished up for a release. You get to play a Bonnie and Clyde type of protagonist who run up against the law.

Bodycam looks so real.

People are making those games. Articles like this will always exist no matter how incorrect they are, no matter how many times they blame "them" for whatever it is "they" do to prevent "those" games from being made.

ZycoFox783d ago

The UK is the biggest junk country pandering to that nonsense as well, with laws against free speech and expression to match. It got so bad even Rowan Atkinson made a video on free speech about it.

Now the UK raises the age rating on harmless films like Mary Poppins, it's just a load of pansy weak ass nonsense.

MrDead783d ago (Edited 783d ago )

The right wing Tories have been in power in the UK for the 14 years you know the ones that are "anti-woke", blame them for your perceptions.

Killer2020UK783d ago (Edited 783d ago )

Are these snowflakes in the room with us now?

This is more faux outrage designed to get hits. The consequences are unfortunately creating hysteria amongst those willing to buy into it and blame "them" or "the left" or "liberals" meanwhile the left are kicking off about genocide, actual real world abhorrent acts. Nobody is campaigning to censor this shit.

Huey_My_D_Long782d ago

Not too mention the fact that some of these game are controversial for you know, underage porn and encouraging rape.

So either the guy just came in to comment snowflakes without reading anything, or he is calling people snowflakes for having a problem with said titles. Crazy how much brain rot someone can have.

banger88783d ago

Dead Island: "The early PC version of the zombie game swapped the playable character Purna’s Gender Wars skill with a prototype name, which shouldn’t be mentioned directly. The skill name made fun of both Purna as a character and feminists."

"Feminist Whore" lmao

ill add one more to the list.
drakengard 1.

its ridiculous tho, especially since they'd still be able to find their place in alot of places in the world. except america of course ha. and maybe Australia.

ppl are so sensitive these days. ha. but it is what it is.

Barlos783d ago (Edited 783d ago )

They're not offensive.

And we need another Fat Princess. Fantastic little game!

Some people just have no sense of humour if this sort of thing offends them. They need to lighten up and stop taking themselves so seriously.

Deeeeznuuuts783d ago

Would love a new fat princess game 🤟

CantThinkOfAUsername783d ago

Games literally about sexual assault, mass genocide, bombing civilians, and school shooting. None of which is satirical.

isarai783d ago

Actually it's about fat princesses

Huey_My_D_Long782d ago (Edited 782d ago )

Its crazy that people are fixated on Fat princess when clearly the list is going over controversies, and not all of them are equal. Like way worse examples but pretend the entire list is like that.
