How the PlayStation’s DualShock shaped modern controllers

Sony’s original PlayStation DualShock controller has influenced decades of other gamepads.

It’s a well designed controller that’s stood the test of time especially in comparison to the other 5th gen controllers

darthv722361d ago

I dont think they anticipated there would be such a shift to analog controls over the years otherwise they would have put the left analog in the main position.

The design has them in the lower center because that was unused space and was easy to adapt their molds to but come PS2 they should have switched things around like Nintendo and MS did (and even Sega). All of which made analog the primary interface and d-pad secondary.

JEECE2361d ago

Main position? So is it your contention that the best controller design would be to have both analog sticks higher on the controller? Like an Xbox controller but with the right stick where the face buttons are?

darthv722360d ago (Edited 2360d ago )

^no Jee. Just the main directional control. Command buttons are still primary for the right thumb but d-pad movement is no longer the main input method for modern 3d games. Hasn't been for a long time since analog controls are.

2d fighters and shmups still use d-pad but then again I'm more for using an arcade stick for that experience.

JEECE2360d ago

@darthv72

Uh command buttons are still primary for the right thumb? So your assertion is that in games today, you use the face buttons more frequently than the right stick? We must be playing different genres- in games where the left stick controls movement and the right controls the camera, precise camera control is at least as important to the experience as movement, rendering the right stick as important as the left.

I guess in a Diablo style RPG where you aren't controlling the camera, I could see the argument that the face buttons are more important than the right stick.

sinspirit2360d ago

There is NOTHING that supports a higher analog being better. Not one thing. It's just a bandwagon. However, just holding anything else with a grip my thumb aligns more alike a Sony controller than any other. Not that other controllers are uncomfortable, but my thumb position definitely feels more natural being open and "winged" open to reach the analog rather than altering my hands position upward and thumb more closed to reach the upward analog of other controllers. Just comparing a natural grip to any other object almost always matches a Sony controller more. I also play with my middle finger on the triggers and map my R1 and R2 buttons to fire and ADS if possible. It's harder to have that position with the analog on top and makes me want to use just my index finger instead for both shoulder buttons. ALL main controllers are comfortable. IF you don't give them a proper chance and try to find the right hold for each one then you're doing yourself a disservice. Don't grip an XBox controller and DualShock the same ways basically. I find comfort even with the Joycons(but have to pop my lower two fingers after extended playtime cause they fall asleep sometimes lol, that's just a me thing though). Stop the ridiculous controller comparison. If a controller means so much to you then you would buy the adapter to use any controller you want for any platform because they don't cost much. IF a controller means so much to you then you'd surely do this to play the games you use controllers for in the first place and no platform should matter so long as you got it for the games that you are interested in.

If you look at the competition no one was designing ergonomic pads that fit in your hand Sony somehow broke the mood with a simple idea of let's have you actually grip something instead of hold onto a weird circular pad like Sega mega drive had or the SNES

They took the analog stick from the N64 idea and made it sooo much better IMO. The DS1 and DS2 were the perfect weight, size, and layout at least for me. Though I thought the 360 controller is right up there, I’d still give it to the DS1/DS2

Stanjara2361d ago (Edited 2361d ago )

Ds1/2/3 were fine at the time, but since I tried 360, my mind has changed. Ds3 also had no resistance on analog sticks.
When you play something intensive like Mortal Kombat, or FIFA, your hands can cramp up on the older Ds ones.

360 had great ergonomic but lousy d pad. Xbox one is great, but has clicky d pad.

Ds4 is perfect for me and I'm so glad that they are keeping the design for PS5.

DrDeath2361d ago

Why would you possibly use the analog sticks in mortal kombat? Use the D pad psycho path

Stanjara2360d ago

DrDeath - not using analog sticks, but the shape of older controllers had hard edges, so by playing competitively my hands would cramp up.

Profchaos2360d ago

Ds1/2 were great but the 3 was probably my most hated gamepad ever with its l2 and R2 triggers curving awkwardly making shooters annoying to play the fact that most every Dev switched the shoot button from R2 to r1 says enough.
Given that period was the rise of the console competitive fps it just wasn't a good period to do that. When I feel the need to play my PS3 I hook up my ds4 to the PS3 and play that way

But the ds4 is absolute perfection imo it still feels great in the hand and felt great on the day I unboxed it.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose24d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE24d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername23d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy24d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde24d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8624d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8624d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300024d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle24d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
