Death Stranding Isn’t Very Fun, but it Never Needed to be

Fun isn't the first word that comes to mind when thinking of Death Stranding, but the game accomplishes much more than delivering on fun.

MikeCripe2378d ago

I'm in love with it, but I understand why some people don't think it's very fun. Especially in those early hours haha.

This is my surprise game of the year. Didn't expect much after seeing the trailers and negative previews but I'm actually hooked. Between rebuilding roads, creating zipline paths and killing BTs there's a surprising amount of thought and detail they've put into the game

Very mature response. We all have our own opinions, but at least you can understand where others opinions come from. Wish more were like this.

I personally have had loads of fun in the game so far, i can understand people not liking it though, it is what it is.

Dirty_Lemons2378d ago

I prefer 'rewarding' rather than traditional fun. There's something remarkably addictive and engaging in traversing the landscape; the journey is often better than the destination, unless you get to a cutscene.

Brilliant experience in my opinion, but would not judge anyone for hating it either.

GrmpyolGamer 2378d ago

Pfffft why would a video game need to be fun?

Charlieboy3332378d ago

Well I wouldn't call Dark Souls or Bloodborne "fun". They are also frustrating at times, challenging all the time and yet people love them for the sense of reward and accomplishment that you get once you beat a boss or make it through a difficult area to the next bonfire. So what, in the actual hell, makes these games ''great'' although they are not at all ''fun'', yet Death Stranding provides almost the exact same experience except with an even more intriguing story, graphics, sounds, music and extremely engaging and produced cutscenes?

Chriswynnetbh2377d ago

I don't get why people say FromSoft games aren't fun. Yes they are challenging but that doesn't in any way retract from now much fun I am having. Honestly nothing beats the adrenaline rush of fighting a boss 30 times and finally pulling it off and getting the win. There is lore to get lost in, tons of different builds and weapons to try. I just don't get the mentality that challenging automatically equals not fun.

Would living in a ghost infested hell hole where most of the population that actually survived lives underground and the rest that are still living above ground are either trying to cause voidouts which wipe entire cities off of the map or trying to steal everything you own be fun? I mean for better or for worse, you are IN Death Stranding's world. It's almost a slight to even call it a game. It's an experience and one I think anybody that loves great stories, great characters and a great world should check out.

BlackDoomAx2378d ago

It's not like there are games setup in sad/apocalyptic worlds and are still fun to play.

jbrock112377d ago

I've played as many Fallout's and whatnot as anybody and it doesn't even compare. This game has no real direct comparison.

zackeroniii2378d ago (Edited 2378d ago )

completely null and irrelevant argument. you might as well say that for other survival games too.

DS is a survival game just like resident evil, the last of us, outlast, dead island...basically every other survival game.

But the difference between those games and DS is that those were ACTUALLY FUN.

people mean to tell me that being a UPS delivery guy is what makes DS enjoyable?

"it's a slight to call it a game"... so i'm going to assume you think it's like real life? if i wanted to walk across the world carrying boxes i could literally do that right now.

i think it's the pretty graphics that has people fooled and thinking they're immersed which is actually just hiding the boring mechanics of this game, but not really well.

holy moly never thought i'd see the day where people are defending a game for not being fun...

what is this...i am really confused.

Shezgear2378d ago

You haven't played it. Yet you talk bs on every article. Good job!

zackeroniii2378d ago

@shezgear why would i need to play it?! all i need to know and see is right here on the web...there's nothing else to it...

why would i spend 60 dollars to play a boring walking sim when i could just go outside, and actually have fun doing it in real life?

jbrock112377d ago

All I'll say is that I was the same way before I played it. I debated whether or not I was going to buy it after watching some stuff online and hearing some reviews but I said to hell with it and bought it anyway. Even a few hours in I wasn't sure if I liked it yet but now at 50+ hours and beating the game, I can officially say that it's one of my favorite games of all time. Take that for what you will. If you want quick gratification, go play Apex. If you want a game that's going to stay with you for years, maybe even forever, play Death Stranding.

BlackDoomAx2377d ago (Edited 2377d ago )

Lol, couldn't have said it better. It's a new category of games, the boring games. If the photography and the message behind it are more important than being fun, Kojima should really make movies instead.

Hideo Kojima put Low Roar in Death Stranding because gamers need more culture in their lives

It's important in life to maintain a broad palette when it comes to culture and the arts. Hideo Kojima agrees, as he continues to use video games like Death Stranding to introduce people to music and other elements they might not otherwise discover.

Cool, as long as no one is losing their job while already rich people make more money.

Notellin226d ago

Exactly this right here. Tools should never replace creators.

DarXyde226d ago

I feel that this is the position of every sensible person. However, we face two prominent issues:

1. There are nefarious actors (like Microsoft) who want to prohibit AI regulation. Some US states have some regulations in place, but it's very patchwork at best.

2. Without strict quality control and human review, AI is very likely to hallucinate in embarrassing ways.

TheEroica226d ago

Lol.... People are gonna be losing their jobs...

Travesty227d ago

I’m all in favor for faster developed games.. that’s been the Achilles heel this gen.. taking 5+ years for development. If it can help with building vast landscapes then let it be. A win win if it doesn’t endanger the jobs of current team. They can help in other areas.

Gamersunite880227d ago

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

H9227d ago

I don't doubt kojima that he has good intentions and would use AI without compromising the creative process, but you know for sure other development will say the same and have AI make the whole game for them.

Notellin226d ago (Edited 226d ago )

Yeah and whoever he works for or whatever AI models he chooses to use will train on his data and work to replace Kojima themselves.

I can't imagine any other creator in gaming that demands the salary size of Kojima.

rlow1227d ago

What I wonder about, let’s say five years from now. Will an individual be able to make a triple A title using A.I…If so what would be the need for others? I hate to say it but eventually people will loose their jobs. Because I hear no talk about the ethics of using A.I. among the big companies.
